As we enter fall, we will be performing aerification and topdressing on our putting surfaces. This process oxygenates the root zone, aiding recovery from summer stress. Topdressing with sand provides a growing medium for the Bentgrass and promotes a smooth, firm putting surface once healed. We will use solid tines rather than hollow tines for a faster aerification and quicker recovery.
We have just applied our fall pre-emergent herbicide to the short-cut Bermudagrass on all three courses. Along with the herbicide, we are applying three applications of potassium to protect the plants and strengthen their roots as they prepare for winter dormancy. Potassium is mixed into our spray tanks for both the pre-emergent and Spring Dead Spot treatments. The fungus that causes Spring Dead Spot is active in the fall, though damage won’t appear until spring. Treating it now helps limit its spread. We will apply two consecutive fungicide treatments to minimize turf loss in Spring 2026.
Autumn in Williamsburg offers perfect conditions for golf. Come out and take advantage of our beautiful fall courses!
Thank you for your continued support and for being a valued Member of The Club at Kingsmill.

Golf Tips from the Pro: Why Do We Always Aerate When The Greens Are Perfect?
Many golf courses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region consider mid-August an indicator that aeration is upon us. Depending on location, desired turf species and golf calendar, core and solid-tine aeration may already be taking place.
One question we often receive is: “Why does our superintendent aerate when course conditions and weather are perfect?” This question is very perceptive and explains why aeration is performed when the weather and course are best. Weather plays a large role in turf recovery. Thus, performing aeration when the weather favors turf growth leads to quicker recovery. Additionally, aeration is stressful on plants. Performing aeration on healthy, “perfect” turf is critical. If aeration is conducted on already stressed turf, the result could be disastrous.
The range of ideal weather varies depending on the desired turf species. In other words, if your course is promoting bentgrass, mid-August to early September is a good time to aerate. The warm days and cool nights of early fall favor bentgrass growth, placing the competitive advantage on bentgrass over Poa annua. Conversely, if the desired turf is Poa annua, core aeration can be performed later in the fall. There is less chance for stress on Poa annua in late summer and early fall. Unfortunately, the golf schedule often dictates aeration timing more than the weather which could compromise proper aeration timing.
Another question we often receive is: “Why is so much sand applied?” Superintendents realize aeration is never popular. However, the benefits of aeration far outweigh the potential problems if nothing is done. Superintendents also understand that playability is a concern. Following aeration, especially on greens, filling each of the aeration holes with sand will promote quicker recovery and improve ball roll. There is no denying that surface disruption occurs during aeration and that greens will play differently following aeration. However, effects on playability as a result of aeration can be minimized if aeration channels are completely filled with sand. Ultimately, applying enough topdressing sand to fill aeration holes will result in a smoother post-aeration surface that recovers quicker than a surface with open aeration holes.
Aeration is performed every year to improve turf health and playing conditions. Core and deep-tine aeration are critical for the health of highly maintained grass. Keep in mind that every time you comment on the exceptional conditions during the golf season, a large part of maintaining those conditions is routine core aeration. Do not lose sight of the long-term goal because of the short-term inconvenience.
Thank you for taking the time to read our Golf Tips of October, and we look forward to seeing you out on the course!

About Prabir and Jenny
Prabir and Jenny Sen-Gupta moved from the Chicago area to Kingsmill about two and a half years ago. Prabir retired as a Vice President in Global Supply Chain with Baxter International, and Jenny is a retired nurse. They have three grown children: Ellora and her husband Alex in Massachusetts, Nikhil in California, and Nisha in Chicago. Their dog, Yani, lives with them in Kingsmill. Looking for a warmer place to enjoy retirement, they chose Williamsburg for its beauty, history, and mild weather. They had spent holidays here in the past and knew their children would visit often—and they do. Fortunately, Prabir and Jenny didn’t downsize, so there’s plenty of room for everyone.
Why Prabir and Jenny became Members
While neither Jenny nor Prabir play golf, they became Members for the fitness and social opportunities. Jenny enjoys morning Aqua Aerobics, Prabir often uses the Fitness Center, and together they attend Member Mixers.
What is your favorite thing about Kingsmill?
Jenny loves the natural beauty, with their house overlooking Halfway Creek, surrounded by trees, birdlife, and even an eagles’ nest. Prabir enjoys Kingsmill’s manicured gardens, and together they walk their dog or drive through the neighborhoods in every season. Both value the safety of a gated community.
Favorite Menu Item
When their kids or visitors are with them, they like going to the buffet breakfast at Rivers Edge to enjoy the view and a relaxed meal. Prabir also enjoys a pastry and coffee at The Mill, where the servers are always courteous, while catching up on national and regional newspapers.
Favorite Vacation Spot
Prabir is from Singapore and Jenny from Australia, so they visit family and friends there every few years and in between enjoy traveling to other countries for the culture, scenery, and food. This year they spent a long holiday in China, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Vietnam with friends and loved it.
Fun Fact
Jenny spent her senior year in West Virginia as Parkersburg High’s International AFS student from Australia and never imagined she’d later move permanently to the US and live next door in Virginia. Prabir has lived on three continents, Asia, Australia, and North America, for over 20 years each.
