MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Welcome to Kings' School Dubai's 2nd edition of 'The Book', our pictorial celebration of the year that was. Our word of the year, which has guided many aspects was 'Gratitude' as we felt it important to reflect on all that we have and all that is good in our lives after a prolonged period of challenge and uncertainty. This year, we have seen the return of events and activities that had been restricted for so long and we have been delighted with how our students seized all opportunities and made the very best of them. Our success as a school has again been astounding, whether that be in academic outcomes attained, an Outstanding BSO Inspection, significant sporting successes both locally and internationally, or through

key performance moments like Arts Week, class assemblies, and the Year 6 production. School and community events resembled events of the past, with parents able to enter school for assemblies, to support children in sporting fixtures, or to host a country stand for International Day. Thank you to every member of our Kings' School Dubai community, our students, parents, and our academic, admin, and support teams for your positivity and engagement in all events and opportunities highlighted within. MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY HEADTEACHER As another year draws to a close, its time to look back on the year and reflect. While Dubai celebrated EXPO 2020, much of what the international community experienced at the event was also taking place within the KSD campus! Innovation, technology, art and culture - ‘connecting minds and creating the future.’ A popular song choice for many class assemblies this year was the EXPO theme song - This is Our Time - and some of the lyrics sum up the year at KSD perfectly.

The students continue to impress with their hard work, determination and kindness. MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD GIRL I have gone through an incredible, magnificent and remarkable journey during my time here at Kings' School Dubai and will look back on the memories I have made throughout the years as a reminder of how incredible my journey has been. We developed friendships along the way and experienced discoveries that brought our best interests out of us. You see, Kings’ has never failed to bring out the best in every child. I recall how the students kept bright with beaming faces of joy and how our teachers were there for us, even on the darkest of days.

Every lesson taught and all advice given has brought us here, to where we stand now, proud to be a true student of Kings' School Dubai. Each and every lesson we have been taught has never dampened the excitement and thrill in me. With each new term comes new concepts, which for us as children can be very interesting to experience. MY 8 YEARS AT KINGS' SCHOOL DUBAI Since joining Kings’ School Dubai in FS1, I have been fortunate to experience a nurturing environment. Not only has my time at Kings’ taught me valuable life lessons but it has made my learning experience thoroughly enjoyable and I always look forward to every day at this outstanding school. The teachers at Kings’ are kind-hearted, empathetic and supportive. Student well-being is a high priority at Kings’ Dubai. Pink Day, Gold Day and Mental Health Awareness Week help to raise awareness of issues that surround us.

Being here has been such a fun experience and has helped us to thrive in many aspects whether it's academics, philanthropy, sports or creative arts. MY 8 YEARS AT KINGS' SCHOOL DUBAI Ever since I joined Kings’ in FS1, I have always woken up in the morning excited to go to school or my early morning activities. Not only has Kings’ School Dubai helped me mature from 4 years old all the way to 11 years old it has helped me perfect my athletic skills. I have been able to compete in many amazing events ranging from swimming galas, DAPSA cross country and athletics events, the World School Games here in Dubai and even travelling to London with my school for an international swim competition. I have loved each of my teachers in all the 8 years I have been in Kings’, they have been kind, challenging and caring all at once. In FS1 it was impossible not to enjoy it, actually every day in Kings’ is hard not to enjoy.

Experiencing many competitions like the Hamdan qualifiers, swimming for Year 3 when I was in Year 2, winning best year group in the DASSA competition in Year 3 and then competing in the World School Swim Championships in London. I have absolutely loved my first year here at Kings' School Dubai. I was welcomed by the whole school community from the very beginning and have had a fantastic year getting to know so many children and families. Coming from the UK, I had never experienced things like International Day and Arts' Week before, so it was incredible to be a part of such enjoyable events. The school community here is really special because you can walk past anyone; staff, children and parents, and instantly become engaged in lovely, positive conversations. My favourite thing to do is to greet children and parents at the door each morning because I love seeing the smiles and catching up with you all. WORLD KINDNESS DAY World Kindness Day was on 13th November, which aligned perfectly with our Anti-Bullying Week, with the theme of 'One Kind Word'. As well as exploring how to spread kindness

throughout the week, the Positive Education Champions launched a Random Acts of Kindness challenge for the week.

ANTI-BULLYING WEEK Anti-bullying Week took place between 14th and 18th November and this year's theme was 'One Kind Word'. Students had the opportunity to explore ways in which they can spread kindness amongst peers, family and within their communities.

Anti-bullying Week also provides a great opportunity to reiterate the rights and responsibilities that drive our school ethos, particularly to feel safe and happy; to be included; to be respected.

For Anti-Bullying Week, I set up a Kindness Bingo activity across Year 5 that really helped spread kindness. Lots of people started sitting with different people, holding the door open, saying thank you, and generally being kinder. Aliya Dzhumaeva 5SGR

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK In line with the UK’s Mental Health Awareness Week, our annual Mental Health Awareness and Positive Education Week took place from 9th May to 13th May. The purpose of the week was to raise an awareness of what mental health is and strategies students can use to have good mental health. It was also an opportunity to celebrate our Positive Education Curriculum and understand how this can further support and promote mental health and well-being.

Throughout the week, students participated in a range of positive education lessons and explored how strategies for supporting our physical health also support our mental health. In addition, there was a focus on how nature plays a role in supporting our mental health. Positive Education Champions launched projects within their classes and year groups to further spread well-being across the school.

SCIENCE FAIR This year, the theme for British Science Week was 'Growth'. Moving away from the traditional ideas around growth, our school focused on the effects of the growing human population on the environment. Each phase was tasked with creating different elements of what is needed for humans to thrive in an environment. These elements were: mini gardens made by Phase 1, sculpted pieces of art from recycled

materials by Phase 2, floating homes by Phase 3, and our eldest students in Phase 4 thought about how we generate power by researching and creating wind turbines. The project titles were shared at the beginning of March and on Friday 25th March, we held our Science Fair. Students from across the school had an opportunity to showcase, observe and test their innovative projects.

I made a butterfly life cycle. I used recycled materials from home like cardboard, buttons, and paper. I chose butterflies because they are my favourite animals. I did most of my project by myself, my mum helped me put it together with hot glue. I enjoyed making my project and next time I would like to do a project about space. Naiesha Sajnani Year 2

I made a solar powered garden using a solar panel water pump and other household items. I used styrofoam to stabilise the bottom and Lego pieces to make it look like a garden. Connor Gillespie Year 4

For my wind turbine, I researched which materials to use. I decided to use some key household items that included cardboard, plastic straws, rocks (for weight), cardboard rolls from kitchen rolls, and skewers. I was glad it worked. ENTERPRISE WEEK Introducing our students to the world of entrpreneurship was an incredible opportunity to learn about the nature of business, innovation in product design, and the world of sales and marketing. Having the support from our parents was an additional bonus this year, as we felt our community beginning to come back together again. Parents from the business world hosted a range of presentations to classes from Years 2 to 6, which enabled

the students to hear first-hand experiences of what it takes to start a business and the value of having a growth mindset. Starting with a budget of 100dhs per class, we designed, created, and marketed our products; these ranged from home-made lemonade to clay flowerpots. Overall, the school made over 20,000dhs in profit, which was incredible! The students have enjoyed getting to choose how to spend thier hard-earned cash!

WORLD BOOK DAY As part of the World Book Day celebrations this year, and to promote a love of reading, all members of our school community were invited to come into school dressed as their favourite book character. There were many creative outfits and awards were given for the best dressed in each class. During a whole-school assembly, the Primary Leadership Team got into character and shared extracts of their favourite children's books with students. The school's Student Council launched a competition

where students were invited to create a book character using a hard-boiled egg! Competition entries were very imaginative and awards were given for the best designs. Throughout the day, students were involved in many different reading activities, from storytelling to designing their own reading areas across school. A highlight of the day was when children read to their 'buddy' class and shared their favourite stories with one another. Overall, it was a fun-filled day for all!

What I loved about World Book Day was the design an eggcompetition, which was really fun! I designed an egg, which was DogMan and I ended up winning for the whole phase! Dressing up was also great fun because it was wonderful to see everyones creative costumes. Gustavo Cross 3MTA

QUEEN ELIZABETH II PLATINUM JUBILEE CELEBRATION On 6th February this year, Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth. To celebrate this unprecedented anniversary, we celebrated in style at Kings' School Dubai. Students dressed like royalty and learned what it would be like to be a member of the British Monarchy for a day. Our Year 6

children created a beautiful poem for her Majesty the Queen and wrote a letter that was sent to Buckingham Palace for the Queen to enjoy. Lemonade tasting and scone delights with clotted cream made our afternoon tea an unforgettable experience. It was a very special occasion as we celebrated our British heritage at Kings' School Dubai.

UAE 50TH NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATIONS Celebrating 50 years of the UAE was a memorable day for us all, and captured so well through photographs and video. As a community of students and staff, we recreated the UAE flag by assembling hand-painted tiles, with the flag growing as the day progressed.

Students took part in a wide range of traditional events, furthering their knowledge of the UAE culture. A timeline of significant UAE achievements over the past 50 years now hangs proudly along the corridor to our new Year 6 wing and serves as a constant reminder of what can be possible with vision and determination.

At KSD, we celebrated this 50th anniversary of our country by unvieling our new UAE timeline display. It is an amazing visual to see how far this country has come within 50 years. INTERNATIONAL DAY International Day is undoubtedly the most popular and widely celebrated day within the school calendar. Each year it has developed further, whilst still keeping the core essence of celebrating the different cultures and nationalities present at Kings' School Dubai. It is a wonderful opportunity for children to expand their knowledge and understanding of countries and to enjoy the presentations that capture what a place is like to live in or to visit. This year, each class created activities and workshops to enrich awareness of countries

from around the world. Many talented individuals performed traditional music, dance routines, monlogues, and presentations that were celebrated on the International Day website. This year, KSD welcomed the return of the International Day Expo, where enthusiastic parents and contributers showcased arts and crafts and provided an array of tasty food delicacies to tempt visitors. Stalls included games, photograph stations and entertainers to ensure that everyone had a great time and truely embraced living in an international community.

KINGS' SCHOOL DUBAI IFTAR On 28th April, Kings' School Dubai held its annual Iftar at Atlantis the Palm. The theme of this event was Eid celebrations around the world. It was our most successful Iftar yet, with over 550 students, family members, and staff in attendance. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, during which many Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset each day, and Eid alFitr marks the end of Ramadan fasting. For many Muslims, Eid al-Fitr is a time to express gratitude to Allah for the assistance and strength he provided throughout the

month of Ramadan to help them practice self-control. It is a tradition to celebrate the day by making charitable donations known as Zakat Al-Fitr, getting dressed up, gathering with family and friends, and attending Eid prayers. The actual dates are subject to the sighting of the moon. We were able to take our attendees on a journey around the world to see how Eid is celebrated in different countries. However, we all share the same joy, happiness, giving, sharing, and inspiration on Eid, no matter where you are.

ARTS WEEK As the world came to Dubai for EXPO 2020, the students of Kings' School Dubai took inspiration from art and artsists across the globe. From print making to collage, sketching to watercolours, a wide range of materials were explored and skills developed.

Once again, the school was tranformed into an art gallery incorpoarting intallations and artefacts. A visit from Dubai based artist, Lucy Miller, inspired Art Squad to produce some beautiful detailed paintings of their own stories.

HOUSE DAY Our House Programme offers students from Years 1 to 6 the opportunity to become leaders and role models, and to lead activities and plan events within their year group and school. Our House Competitions, and House Day in particular, are a fantastic part of the academic year that brings together the Kings’ School Dubai community. Students are proud to be part of Tudor, Stuart, Windsor or Hanover and are determined to do their best in every competition. On House Day, the four houses compete in a range of activities, such as a dance,

singing, science, team games, and our House Captain Games Competition. On Sports Day, pupils focus on doing their best for their house to gain points by competing in a range of events with every throw, jump or sprint building towards their overall score, with the aim to win the House Cup! In Term 3, our House Captains create, organise, and manage competitions with a focus on the environment, the community, academic, and sporting ability. All of these competitons are added to the house point total at the end of the year, which then decides who wins the House Cup!

SPORTS DAY Our Phase 1 and Phase 2 students went on an exciting pirate adventure for their sports days. Students were running, throwing, and jumping, in a number of pirate themed events, such as Treasure Island, Rough Sea Races, Pirate Training and Cannon Launch. The sports days for Phase 3 and Phase 4 started with the 400m (Year 3 and 4) and the 600m (Year 5 and 6) event. Our other track events were the 50m sprint and the

house team relay. Students also competed in the field events, which included javelin, ball throw, standing triple jump and speed bounce. For every event, students scored points for their house by achieving either bronze, silver, gold, or platinum. Congratulations to every student for trying their best in all of the events and achieving lots of personal bests and school records.

WORLD SCHOOL GAMES The World School Games was a multi-sport international competition in which, 16 schools took part in three sports over the course of four days at various venues around Dubai. For each of the three sports, athletics, swimming, and football, schools were given a position from 1st - 16th place based on their results. These were then totalled and an overall final position was awarded to each school to confirm the World Champions. Day 1 and 2 saw the children battle it out on the athletics track and in field events at Sports City. For every race, throw, and jump, the students scored points towards the teams total. As you can see from our medal list, our team did outstandingly well and finished in 3rd place overall!

The swimming took place at the Hamdan Sports Complex on day 3 and Kings' School Dubai finished in 1st place! Every finish in a race scored vitally important points towards the swim teams total. Huge congratulations to the swim team on their incredible achievements. On the final day, the boys and girls football took place at The Sevens. Every child gave it their all and covered just about every inch of the Sevens pitches. The girls football team finished 7th and the boys were crowned the champions! After totaling up the points for each sport, the moment came at the award ceremony when Kings' School Dubai were crowned the World School Games Champions 2022! An incredible achievement.

WORLD SCHOOL GAMES SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS, LONDON, UK From 21st to 22nd May, 11 elite swimmers from the Year 5 and 6 Kings' School Dubai swim squad travelled to the UK to compete in the World School Swim Championships, held at the London Aquatic Centre. The competition comprised of short course and long course events in all strokes over varying race distances from 50m to 200m. Before the event, they met British Olympic swimmer and Commonwealth double gold medallist, Ross Davenport, who spoke with them about being mentally prepared. They then took part in a swim clinic where he shared hints and tips on how to improve their dives. The swimmers also enjoyed a sightseeing ferry cruise along the river Thames where

they learned all about the history of London. Over 20 schools took part in the competition from all over the world and our swimmers dominated the U/11 category from the first dive until the last touch. The team medalled in almost every event and came first in 11 out of 12 relay races! In total, the swimmers won 84 medals and won both the U/11 girls and U/11 boys trophies, and were crowned U/11 World School Swimming Champions. The team were: Tamma Younan, Oceane Rakotonanahary, Giada Bertoni, Leja Budvytyte, Amber Morgan, Grace Humphrey, Seth English, Hedi Cheltout, Sami Haslam, Nabih Azzam, and Jad Katerji.

COMPETITIVE SPORT Our sports provision this year has grown, with students in Years 3 to 6 having the opportunity to take part in football, netball, athletics, rugby, tag rugby, rounders, cricket, basketball, badminton, and tennis. In each of the sports, we competed in DASSA tournaments (the largest and longest running school sports association in the UAE).

All students who attended training had the opportunity to compete in fixtures against other schools across the year, despite the current restrictions. The PE and swim teams are proud to have seen students progress and enjoy being a part of school squads, and we look forward to seeing them develop further next year.

RESIDENTIALS After a two year hiatus from residentials, it was great to see our Year 5 and 6 students back at camp. The experience of being away from home and undertaking activities that they would not normally do, allowed the students to develop and grow. From abseiling to sensory trails, the children were exposed to different experiences

that were designed to challenge and stretch them. Opportunities like this are moments that will live in the minds of our students forever. New relationships are formed as the students learn to work and play with different children and adults.

CLASS ASSEMBLIES Class assemblies are always an exciting opportunity for students to not only showcase their learning across the curriculum but also to share their wonderful performance skills

CHESS COMPETITIONS Throughout the course of the academic year, Kings’ School Dubai has hosted 7 chess competitions with the invaluable assistance of our friends at Chess Knowledge.

other schools, including schools from the Dubai Enrichment League (in a variety of year groups encompassing FS1 to Year 6).

These events have been held exclusively online due to Covid restrictions and it has been remarkable that the participation and skill levels have been maintained. We regularly have in excess of 100 students participating in a single event and the weekly chess clubs are extremely well attended.

The standard of play in the external competitions was very high and it has been great to observe some of our minigrandmasters and mini-grandmistresses improve their skills in these events. The highlight of the year was the event in November when 92 children from across schools in Dubai participated in an online competition for children from FS2 to Year 6. The top of the leaderboard was dominated by students from our school.
