MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Today’s footprint is tomorrow's legacy. I welcome you to the third edition of The Book, a memoir of events past. This has without a doubt been a year of bringing back what makes Kings’ Kings’. Students have jumped at the opportunities on offer to them, both within and beyond the classroom, and The Book captures these perfectly. The real highlight, however, has been the rebuilding of our community, through a variety of events as well as students simply having the freedom to move around their school; we have seen growth in so many of them, both socially and emotionally. This year, there has been some extraordinary highlights, whether that be in sporting fixtures, the black box theatre, the food technology rooms, or within lessons.

It would, however, be wrong to not mention the Year 11 and Year 13 cohort who, after a very different GCSE and A Level course, have taken the exams in their stride, balancing not only the return of formal exams with the time difference between us and the UK, which results in some interesting timings, but also in the personal drive that each and every student has shown to achieve to their own personal best. Once again, The Book provides our students with a peek at ‘what's to come’ for them in their future years at Kings’ as well as a memoir of past experiences. I sincerely hope that you enjoy flicking through the third edition of The Book and that you get as much pleasure reflecting on the memories made in 2021-22 as I have. Rebecca Gray Principal

MESSAGE FROM THE PRIMARY DEPUTY HEADTEACHER Another wonderful year at Kings' School Al Barsha is coming to an end. It has certainly been a different year for me, having spent most of terms one and two on maternity leave. Since returning in spring, it has been simply lovely to see and feel our school coming back to life, with whole-school celebrations, in-person assemblies, school parades, exciting hook days, and just enjoying being together again with fewer restrictions in place.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRIMARY DEPUTY HEADTEACHER Wow! What an incredible year we have had at Kings' School Al Barsha. This year it has been absolutely wonderful to be able to begin to rebuild our community spirit. From inviting parents back on site to attend our first large-scale performance in over two years for the amazing National Day concert, celebrating 50 years of the UAE, to a wonderful International Day celebration, fun-filled sports days, and our community Iftar, Barsha is truly buzzing once more. Students have continued to impress us with their resilience, hard work, and tenacity, and it has been fantastic to see them return to active learning and working collaboratively in the classroom. It has also been especially

lovely to be able to see their lovely, smiling faces again in the playgrounds and other outdoor areas. This year saw the return of a bigger and better ECA and enrichment programme, and it has been delightful to see so many students participating in their passions, sharing their talents, competing against other schools, taking a risk and trying something new. MESSAGE FROM THE SECONDARY HEADTEACHER The end of an academic year is always a time for reflecting and reminiscing. For students leaving for university or family relocation, there will be even more room for nostalgia. Friends made, funniest moments, and favourite teachers always rank highest in these thoughts and conversations. Looking back with pride is, I suspect, a normal part of human nature. As a community, we have had several occasions to mark historic moments, from the 50th anniversary of our home nation to the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II. As a school, there is so much that we can take pride in too. Re-establishing normal school routines after the disruption of the

past two years has been at the top of our priority list. Within that, preparing our Year 13s for their final A Level examinations, bearing in mind they have never had to sit formal exams before, has been a challenge that the students took on with tremendous character. What makes Kings’ School Al Barsha great, however, are the opportunities offered beyond the confines of subject specifications. The Book contains so many memories of the activities that lead to real personality growth. I hope you enjoy reliving these experiences now and for many years to come. MESSAGE FROM THE SECONDARY DEPUTY HEADTEACHER Kings' School Al Barsha has well and truly come back to life this year and it has been wonderful to see and be a part of. Bringing back extra-curricular opportunities, school performances, National Day, International Day, sports days and more has given us the opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate. It has also been a pleasure watching the maturity of our Year 11 and Year 13 students as they have prepared for the return of exams and have faced this challenge with resilience, determination, and positivity. Indeed, once again, all of our KSAB students have

impressed me this year with their incredible adaptability, enthusiasm, and energy. As we start to look ahead to the next academic year, I am confident that life at Kings' will continue to build on what is already an incredible school, and well and truly flourish. SECONDARY JUNIOR LEADERSHIP TEAM This year has been incredibly eventful, from a new student leadership structure to a secondary school fundraiser, we have enjoyed a really successful year. The last two years have certainly been a challenge for us all, however, with covid restrictions loosening, our school was able to strengthen its community through whole-school events once again. We celebrated different nationalities throughout the school on International Day and celebrated our UAE culture as a whole-school on National Day. This year, we were fortunate enough to have been able to visit Expo 2020, a once in a lifetime event, where students learnt about future development of the UAE and other nations. Our new student leadership system allowed for far more students to immerse themselves

in opportunities that either broadened their knowledge (through societies) or allowed them to help make our school even better (Through Committees). Our committee system proved to be very successful with our school raising over 16,000 AED through a secondary-wide charity event, Kings’ Splash. Our committees were able to give back to the wider community further through desert clean-ups and recycling competitions. We are very proud of all the achievements across the school. MY YEAR IN YEAR 6 This year, I have taken advantage of every opportunity and made the best memories along the way. I had a go at lots of new sports and represented the school in others, including the BSME Netball Tournament and the UDO Dance Competition. With a love for music and drama, I joined the musical theatre squad, the choir, and the Year 6 production. I was especially proud to be among the first students at Kings’ to sit the LAMDA

MY YEAR IN YEAR 6 This year, a highlight for me was the Year 6 Residential. I really enjoyed challenging myself and collaborating with other children across the year group. My favourite topic that we have studied this year is World War II. I liked that I had the opportunity to research all things about the war and present my findings to the class.

Although this was my first year at Kings’, I have really enjoyed taking on the role of Deputy Head Boy and feel I have developed my leadership skills. In Year 7, I am excited about meeting new friends and using the design and technology facilities. Naael Sheikh Deputy Head Boy

MY YEAR IN YEAR 7 This year was my first year in secondary school, and I am proud to say that I spent it here at Kings' School Al Barsha. It has been an extraordinary year filled with new experiences. Each one has been memorable, whether it was taking part in the Year 7 production or learning how to bake in Food Technology. Everything that is done here, no matter what it is, you always feel like one big family. Take sports day for example, it was so amazing how the whole year group got together and cheered on their classmates.

Splash day was another highlight as everyone got together again to dunk Ms Rose with water. Everyone has a voice in this community. I felt so involved when deciding on the student leadership team of the school. When I first joined, I remember wondering if I would fit in and how it would all work, but I felt very welcomed by all the lovely teachers and students here very quickly. Shamsa Al Mheiri Year 7

KINGS' SCHOOL AL BARSHA | The Best By Every Child

MY YEAR IN YEAR 7 Even though I have been at Kings’ School Al Barsha since Year 2, I felt like I was entering a whole new and exciting world when I joined the Secondary. The building was different, the lessons were different, and even the classes were different. Needless to say, I was very worried about getting lost on my first day! However, the teachers and students were very supportive. I remember spotting a teacher and asking her where my form class was. She was super helpful and showed me the right way. This kindness immediately made me feel settled and helped me to start off a very successful year on the right note. I’ve had a lot of fun participating in all of the events that the school has to offer, for example, International Day. I loved how I only had to walk a few steps to visit another country. The countless countries, teachers and parents that

took part in International Day made it one of the highlights of my school year. Another one of my favourite parts of the school year was voting for Head Boy and Head Girl. I loved how included everyone was in the process, the hype for who was going to be appointed and how each candidate promised to do something for the school community. I have also really enjoyed all of the new exciting lessons we have had, for example, Food Technology. This was probably one of my favourite lessons in school because of the different dishes we made. This also taught me many life skills, like cutting vegetables (and that cutting onions is torture!) and cooking pasta. MY YEAR IN YEAR 12 Throughout my time at Kings’ School Al Barsha, I have had the opportunity to develop my critical and analytical skills through taking part in various opportunities that Kings’ has to offer, and these have guided my career aspirations. My journey in Sixth Form has been a challenging but thrilling experience as I have discovered strengths and weaknesses that have made me develop into a well-rounded individual. While I have had my difficulties in Year 12, it has opened my eyes to becoming more independent and taking action on my own, preparing me for Year 13 as well as for the future.

Overall, Year 12 has taught me about the struggles that I may face, but also how to overcome those struggles and be the best version of myself. Moreover, my experience in Year 12 has enabled me to broaden specific skills by taking advantage of the various opportunities at school and by undertaking further learning, which is always recommended. Despite what challenges I may face in Year 13, I am excited to move forward in my educational journey. Zara Shirin Batliwala 12N

Kings’ has also helped me to discover my love for sports, whether it was from playing for the school rugby team or entering the school’s state-of-the-art gym for the first time.

NATIONAL DAY This year's National Day was an extra special celebration as Kings' School Al Barsha community came together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the UAE. It was wonderful to see the students and staff coming to school dressed in traditional Emirati clothing or wearing the colours of the UAE flag. Throughout the day, students visited a host of stalls and completed a range of activities,

providing an opportunity to explore the local culture and heritage of the UAE. Our National Day concert was a musical extravaganza that included the junior orchestra performing the national anthem, students reading Arabic poetry, and taking part in traditional dances and songs, all celebrating the wonderful country we all call home.

WORLD BOOK DAY As part of the World Book Day celebrations, and to promote a love of reading, students were asked to come into school dressed as their favourite authors and literary characters. There were many creative outfits and awards given out for the best dressed in each year group. We had characters from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Sherlock Holmes and this year, even a squad of Tyrannosaurus Rexes from Jurassic Park! Students took part in runways as part of the Costume Competition of 2022. We saw so many fantastic costumes that it was so difficult to choose a winner.

Primary students were invited to write a review for their favourite book to be published on the virtual Bookflix and shared for all of the community to enjoy whilst Secondary students took part in interactive quizzes, reading and writing competitions. Throughout the day, the World Book Day anthem was played to encourage children to Stop, Drop and Read! This was a fantastic opportunity for students to not only share their passion for reading but to discover more exciting authors and novels to engage with.

ARTS WEEK In preparation for Arts Week, the primary school was completely transformed into an incredible art gallery to exhibit our student's creative art. Each area of the school transported us to a different world linked to the students' learning. Students enjoyed touring through

SECONDARY HOUSE Where do we begin with this year's house events? The year started with a bang with head-to-head potted sports and mathematics challenges. This year the Student House Committee was given even more responsibility to lead events. In particular, they took charge of our Mastermind-themed quiz and MasterChef Staff v Students as well as leading lunchtime board game events. Other departments across secondary added a variety of house

challenges to the mix, from chess inter-house leagues to dance choreography show-downs. The house system at Kings' encourages camaraderie between students and staff, creating an ethos of fun, healthy competition. The variety of events ensures inclusion for all and moving forward into the next academic year, it can only get bigger and better! Who do you support: Tudor, Windsor, Hanover, or Stuart?

COLOUR RUN Our astroturf came alive with colour as children took part in this very special run. Students ran together with their classmates and teachers while sports leaders from the secondary school tried their best to cover

LITFEST WEEK In term three, Kings' School Al Barsha hosted its very own LitFest Week to put a spotlight on literature and the important skills linked to it. For the launch day, students and staff were invited in to school wearing their pyjamas whilst bringing their favourite book to share. Author talks were arranged for each year group when they had the chance to share their published book with the children and talk about their journey to becoming an author. Students also had the chance to ask

some questions of their own. Throughout the day, students took part in a variety of activities to promote reading and writing, along with speaking and listening skills. They had the opportunity to meet with another class from a different year group and to share a text of their choice - something that the children really enjoyed! Throughout the rest of the week, links were made within specialist lessons and daily poetry readings were released by our teachers.

INTERNATIONAL DAY COMMUNITY RECIPE BOOK To celebrate International Day 2022, the Food and Nutrition Department, in collaboration with Radisson RED Silicon Oasis and Jones the Grocer Silicon Oasis, launched Volume 2 of our highly successful Kings' Community Recipe Book: a selection of international recipes submitted by our community.

Three recipes were shortlisted by the Radisson RED and Jones the Grocer teams to feature as a special on their menu. The students also worked alongside top chefs to create their dishes in a professional kitchen. A fantastic opportunity for all!

Being chosen for this amazing, once in a lifetime, opportunity was really important to me as I was able to express my culture shown in my passion for cooking. Working in a professional kitchen was a memorable experience and it gave me a new perspective on the food industry. Katie Lynch Year 8

MASTERCHEF 2022 The ultimate house event of the year saw students competing against staff to be crowned 'Kings' Masterchef 2022'. Over two days, twelve students and twelve staff represented their house in challenging technical tasks in the kitchen! Round 1 saw a challenging risotto dish, demanding

perfect time management, excellent heat control, and an ability to judge readiness. The students and staff demonstrated skill, bravery, resilience, and determination making their peers and houses proud of their achievements. Congratulations to all participants!

My favourite part of the play and my role was definitely the way I was encouraged to act out her personality. I loved her willingness to call out people, her sarcasm and her general dramatics, which I feel suit me perfectly. DRAMA AND MUSICAL THEATRE Our Year 4, 5 and 6 Drama and Musical Theatre students explored the many styles of drama, dance and song in an original workshop presentation celebrating literature. Set in the British Library, students took on the characters of famous books, from The Mad Hatter and Matilda to Mary Poppins

and Peter Pan, learning valuable skills in characterisation, devising, improvisation, and reading to a script. The students showcased enthusiastic skills in choreography and vocal techniques to deliver outstanding monologues and scene snapshots.

MAMMA MIA WORKSHOP In September 2021, 30 drama and dance students were given the wonderful opportunity to take part in a Mamma Mia dance workshop, led by one of the lead members of the cast who performed at Dubai Opera. It was a thrilling afternoon watching the students learn the challenging choreography created for the professional show. It was

a delight to see A Level and GCSE Drama students dance and sing to the song 'Mamma Mia'. Nicky Swift, a professional West End performer was captivated by our talented and enthusiastic students. It was also fabulous to see our Year 7 Life Skills students perform.

LAMDA EXAMS This year saw the first students at Kings'School Al Barsha Primary taking LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts) exams. As a registered LAMDA centre, our students can now take these exams internationally. The commitment and dedication they demonstrated in order to prepare for the examination was truly admirable and all of the entrants made amazing progress throughout the course of their coaching.

We are so proud of how far they came and this was reflected in their fantastic results. We achieved 100% 'Distinction' grades with the whole cohort which demonstrates the student's dedication towards achieving a high level of speech and drama delivery. We look forward to continuing the LAMDA process, allowing our students to improve their speaking and performing skills to a distinguished level.

FESTIVE RECITAL The Festive Recital was another triumph this year with more ensembles and students involved than ever before. There were three choirs on show, all led by Miss Godwin; the Junior Choir, Community Choir featuring our senior singers as well as some enthusiastic teachers, and the Barbershop Boys. Meanwhile, Mr Sodeinde led his Rhythm Kings' to an emphatic finish to the first half with some African drumming. The Pops Orchestra opened the second half with a

rousing rendition of 'Seven Nation Army'. Meanwhile, the event finished on a festive high with the Swing Kings', led by Mr Agius, closing the night with 'All I Want for Christmas is You', featuring a stunning vocal performance by Sara Al Louzi. Amongst these ensembles were plenty of excellent solo performances. All in all, it was a wonderful way to celebrate the musical successes of Term 1.

COMPETITIVE SPORTS - YEAR'S OVERVIEW Competitive action returned to the sports fields of KSAB this year with teams competing in the local DASSA leagues and representing the school at the World School Games in March. In Term 1, the football teams returned to the pitches and competed as if they had never been away, putting in excellent performances against many of the top rival schools in the DASSA leagues. Standout performances of the football season included the under 12 boys teams

and U19 girls teams, who won the majority of their games during the season. In Term 2, the rugby and netball teams enjoyed their DASSA seasons with Miss Lewis and Mr Knight leading their teams out in fixtures against JESS, Dubai College and Dubai British School to name a few. Finally, a big congratulations to our cricketers, swimmers and basketballers, who all represented Kings' this year in their competitive fixtures.

QURAN COMPETITION Our Quran Competition takes place in Primary every year and is warmly received by both students and parents. This year, the competition was held in May, with students from Year 1 to 6 taking part. Students went through different stages of recitation and memorisation, and after a challenging process of going through the tajweed rules, correct pronunciation, fluency and content, 104 students achieved the winning prizes with all participants receiving

a certificate of participation to celebrate their efforts. This competition allows students to work passionately in order to learn and memorise the Holy Quran and reach the next level to be more proficient in Quran memorisation. The Quran competition was a great experience for me, I enjoyed learning some more surahs from the Holy Quran as well as revising the surahs I already knew to reach the set goal for the competition. I made excellent progress and achieved the reward for winning the competition as well as to endure Allah's pleasure. DUKE OF EDINBURGH The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award brings together practical experiences and skills to equip young people for life. For many of our students, the highlight of the award is the expedition, when they have the opportunity to refine their camping skills and work as a team to navigate testing terrain and expand their horizons. The expeditions are rewarding and challenging in equal measure.

ART, TEXTILES AND PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION The exhibition showcased the hard work and dedication of the graduating GCSE and A Level Art, Textiles and Photography students. The students took the time to arrange their boards in a way that reflects the diverse range of ideas and skills that they have

explored during their course. You can see evidence of painting, sculpture, drawing and textural textile pieces, along with exciting digital photography. The Art Department corridor has been turned into a visual wonder of colour, shape and texture!

QUEEN'S JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS This year, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth.
