The other evening we visited one of our number in his study. The place was in a dreadful mess—it aways is— books, boxes of " oddments " and papers strewn even on the floor, and he was sitting in the middle of it all doing absolutely nothing. He grunted enquiringly as we came in and then continued to gaze fixedly at the piece of paper in front of him, blank except for the word " Editorial " written at the top. Nobody said anything : we inspected his pictures and the rest of the things hung on the walls while he meditated. And then suddenly : " When can you let me have those Corps Notes, and that bit about the Cross-Country? " He was himself again. Finding him in that mood we beat a hasty retreat of course but not before he had prevailed upon us to put down " a few ideas " for an Editorial. So now the secret is out, of how Editorials are written —remembered at the last moment and scribbled off. And we are expected to be witty and so forth ! But the writing of Editorials is not our real trouble. The question that troubles us most is " What is The Vigornian? " Is it a chronicle, a mere statement of facts, dry and cold like the minutes of meetings, or is it a " magazine " containing .not only news but " all the best that is known and thought " and said in the School? In our efforts to combine both we realize that our work must be good enough to deserve being kept and read many years
