Following our usual custom we deputed to one of our number the task of writing the Editorial. When we went hopefully to his study a few days ago we found the whole place in disorder. Our revered colleague had killed himself. He had obviously been seized with a sudden frenzy and stabbed himself through the heart with a pen. He lay there in a large pool of blood, his features twisted by the anguish of his brain. When we had recovered from the shock, and fortified ourselves with acid-drops, we ventured to investigate further. We drew the pen from his heart and put it in our pocket. Then glancing towards his table we saw a large sheet of manuscript. This, it transpired at the inquest, had been written while the deceased was trying to translate one of Horace's Odes into English verse, while there was a band practice going on outside, and saxophones, as interpreted by somewhat inferior gramophones were blaring in both the neighbouring studies. The previous afternoon also, it transpired, he had been engaged in a heated argument as to the colour of his aura. This is the manuscript as far as it can be deciphered through the blood which covers it, and as it was the last work of him who was deputed to write the Editorial, we print it as such.
