editorial. We thought we would do without one—an Editorial, we mean—but, sirs, we dare not. Craven-hearts we dare not break from the custom of writing a column about nothing. But the Editors of the past were men of genius, and to write about nothing was easy to them. It is not so with us. This is our sixth attempt to produce something worthy of your notice. Some three weeks ago we bought a new pen-holder, two new nibs and a bottle of ink, but nothing happened—at least nothing to boast about. Once we even went so far as to try and write an Editorial in verse. We wrote two lines : " The weather. Oh ! 'tis very sad, But it has been most awfully bad." and then we thought that we had better stop. No, sirs, other Editors may sit down and write off four or five sheets of foolscap of a self-satisfied Editorial, and then with a self-satisfied smile on their cherubic faces, the " copy " safe in an inside pocket, march with a self-satisfied step down the middle of the High Street to the publishers. But we are different. We scribble feverishly with a much-chewed pencil and then with " Thank heaven ! it's done! " we slink by side streets, a hunted look upon our face, the " copy " clutched in our hand, to the publisher's office, we hand our masterpiece, crumpled and torn, to the printer, and flee. So now you know. * '* «
