editorial. Again the task of writing the Editorial comes round, and this time the yoke is set upon a different and a weaker neck. Elijah has departed and his mantle has descended upon us like a wet blanket. For whenever our Muse essayed a flight in prose or verse, it was soon brought down to earth " madidis alis." Like an iron weight the unwritten Editorial hung upon us and until we had finished it our other literary activities were, perforce, suspended. Why should this have been so? Why, when faced with the Editorial task, did we not rush eagerly to it to embrace it, even as a child to his father's arms? The root of the matter, as is obvious, lies in our character. Unlike the editor of fiction, we are of a very retiring disposition, unwilling to refuse any contributions, and so we take umbrage at the thought of unveiling ourselves to the vulgar gaze, as is the Editor's duty in the Editorial. If we could choose, we would retire " far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife " to some fair retreat where we could cherish the tender flower of our undoubted genius. But it cannot be, and against our will, we are dragged into the common eddy from which we emerge much bruised and battered. Dazed we look for solace and we find it in—well, not the Editorial, at any rate. * * * We are constantly asked why the Vigornian does not come out at beginning of term or at half-term or somewhere in between.
