For once Fate has played into the editorial hands. Through natural causes, his introductory effort is readymade. The simultaneous descent upon us of the floods and of our first epidemic for many years form a subject that will, without any padding or verbiage, occupy the necessary quota of space demanded by custom. The turgid phraseology resulting from the Editor's attempts to write something about nothing will give place to the chronicling of cut-and-dried facts.

If it is the duty of this column to suggest a title by which this singular term will be handed down to a suitably astonished posterity, we can suggest none more apt than the " cricketless term." Three weeks had passed in which the deity made familiar to us through the newspapers as " Jupiter Pluvius " frequently put an effective stop to our attempts to indulge in the national game, and we were just imagining ourselves free from the god's unwelcome attentions, when in the space of forty-eight hours the field was submerged under some 8 to 10 feet of a dark brown substance rich in natural oils, old boots and general rubbish, that might at first sight be mistaken for water. Further investigation was unnecessary to prove that the source of this was the River Severn, which had risen with unparalleled speed to an almost unparalleled height.
