editorial. After a lot of crossing out, tearing of paper, and general aversion to the principles of economy, we are trying to increase our usual efforts by presenting an "Editorial." Our contemporaries seem to find it an easy matter, but we who are unaccustomed to it, have to defend ourselves on the plea of "Conservatism." We seldom write an " Editorial," except on an important occasion such as this, for as we must inform the less observant of our readers, we have just shelved another volume. Full of hope we begin the ninth, and beg you not to damp our ardour or spoil our good intentions. Our printing bill gets larger and larger, but, again conservative, we shall not let our price get larger as long as our patient treasurer does not grumble too much ! So here's Vol. IX., and a wish that it may be found better than any of its predecessors.
