(Ebitorial !E remember various Vigornians in the past wherein a note of despondency was struck in the opening chord, to be repeated at intervals as long as space allowed. But the day of Jeremiads is over, we hope never to return. We can enjoy the unwonted satisfaction of looking round us without finding so much to grumble at. Briefly, we have put a fine four on the river and beaten Hereford in our first race ; our cricket has improved in no small degree; we have lived to see the numbers reach 70. Outward and material prosperity all this, and such as counts more " in our day and generation " than scholarships and class lists; but there we have to shew a first in Final Mathematics at Oxford, to find a parallel to

which would defy the memories of half a dozen oldest inhabitants. We have dealt elsewhere at some length on our victory over Hereford on the river. Certainly, a finer crew we are not likely to turn out for some time, and strokes like Dutton are few and far between. While we have had the making of a good four more than once in recent years, none of these previous crews went through such careful training or reached such a pitch of excellence, and that through the absence of any motive like a race with another school. Add to this the greater value now set upon a place in the four, and the good done to our rowing is obvious. At the same time way will be made under great difficulties. The poverty of the Club bars the road like a brick wall. For the Rowing Club stands apart, and is only helped by the Games Fund when the members' subscriptions are not enough to meet expenses. Sometimes it taxes the generosity of the general fund to the amount of sixpence. Owing to the preparation for the boat race with. Hereford Cathedral School, in which two members of the eleven rowed, we were unable to begin properly our cricket season until nearly three weeks of the term, had elapsed.
