King Henry VIII School We are delighted you have joined us and hope you are looking forward to the exciting journey you have ahead of you. It is normal to feel a little nervous before starting a new school so in this handbook we have given you lots of useful information. If you do not understand something or have a question do speak to your Form Tutor or one of the Year 7 team and they will be happy to help you. The School Office team are always on hand too if you are unsure of anything. We have no doubt that you will love your time with us at King Henry’s. It will help prepare you for the future but we hope it will also remain one of the fondest memories of your life.

Your ID card and lanyard must be worn at all times. It will open doors to various buildings and is needed to purchase lun ch in the Dining Hall.

The School Day School Hours
After Care Homework Club You can go to Homework Club every day from 4pm until 5.30pm in the Main Library. You do not need to book, you can just arrive and sign in. There is no charge for Homework Club. If you are still at school after 4.00pm you must sign in for homework supervision, unless attending an activity, match or practice. There is no supervised care after 5.30pm.

Your homework diary will be given to you at the start of term. Please remember to ask your parents to sign this each week. Messages can be sent through your diary between parents and teachers.

Morning break is from 10.45am until 11.10am. Light bites and drinks are available in the Dining Hall or you may bring your own snack.
The school day starts at 8.35am and finishes at 4.00pm. You are welcome on the school site from 8.00am. You must be in your form room by 8.35am for registration. If you are late for school, arriving later than 8.45am, please report directly to the School Office at the main front entrance. Following registration, you will either have assembly (Main Assembly, House Assembly or Year Assembly) or will stay in your form room for silent reading or tutor time.
Lunch break is from 12.55pm until 2.05pm. During this break, the Library is open and many clubs, practices and rehearsals take place. The dining room offers hot and cold meals (including a vegetarian alternative), sandwiches and drinks. Payment is through your ID card/lanyard and is topped up by ParentPay online.

named after Philemon Holland, a former headmaster famous for his translations of Livy, Pliny and Plutarch.
named after the first headmaster, Thomas Sherwyn.

named after Sir Thomas White, who created the Sir Thomas White Scholarship which funds scholarships at the School to this day.
Every year, the four school houses compete for the special Band Trophy, which was given to the School by a former pupil and Chair of Governors, C.J. Band. The competition is fun and friendly, and it gives pupils a great chance to work together, try their best, have fun and be proud of their house. You will have the opportunity to practise your leadership skills and might one day become House Captain!
Everyone is encouraged to join in the house competitions, which include lots of different activities like dodgeball, quizzes, fundraising and playing musical instruments. Two of the biggest events are House Music and House Drama, where you will get to show off your creativity and hard work. Other big events include the House Cross Country in the War Memorial Park, and the year ends with a big celebration at Sports Day.

Learning Support & Wellbeing Hello Year 7s and welcome to Henry’s. My name is Mrs Jessop and I am Head of Learning Support.
What is Learning Support? Learning Support is an amazing department that helps children who may just need some extra help due to their Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Autism, ADHD, working memory as well as many other conditions. In Years 7, 8 and 9 we have some super Learning Support Assistants who go into lessons to help you.
Wellbeing We are also really lucky to have a wonderful Wellbeing Mentor – Mrs Tromans. She works with pupils who need support for a period of time with their emotional wellbeing. Next door to her room is the Wellbeing Centre which is open at lunchtimes for those who might wish to have a quiet space to go to.

The School Office The School Office is open from 8am to 5pm and can help you with the following: • Timetable queries • If you are lost • Lost lanyards • If your ID card isn’t working • Lost property • If you need to contact home • For appointments during school hours • First aid • Bus and transport queries • Late registration – if you arrive at school after 8.45am
School Nurse The School Nurse is based in the Medical and Wellbeing Centre. If you are unwell during the day, please tell your teacher who may advise you to visit the Nurse. If you are unable to take part in PE or Games please see the Nurse beforehand.

Rewards House Points are given for good work, effort or responsibility. These go towards the final Band Trophy which is awarded to the House with the most points at the end of the school year. We might also send a postcard home to say well done or an email to acknowledge your hard work.

Questions and Answers How do I know which classroom to go to?
How do I find out what clubs and activities there are?
You will be issued with a timetable and a map at the start of the year. If you lose your map, go to the School Office or ask another pupil. Everyone is very friendly at Henry’s.
When is Games?
A list of all the co-curricular clubs and societies is published at the start of each term. We also have noticeboards around school giving you information on activities. There is plenty to choose from and we encourage you to try as many as you would like.
Games is on a Friday afternoon for Year 7.
What do I do if I feel ill?
What do I do if I come into school late? Go to the School Office at the main front entrance to let them know that you have arrived.
What do I do if I lose something? Firstly, tell your Form Tutor and then go to the School Office to see if the item has been handed in. Please label all uniform and equipment with your name.
If you are unwell during the day, please let your teacher know as they may send you to see the Nurse. If you are unable to take part in PE or Games please see the Nurse beforehand.
What do I do if I struggle to make friends? Everyone will be anxious about making new friends so don’t worry. A great way to make new friends is to go to as many clubs and activities as possible. You can also talk to someone such as your Form Tutor or Form Prefect.
What do I do if I forget to hand in my homework? Go and see the teacher before your lesson.
