Aloud is an open and safe place for all pupils, irrespective of gender, to discuss and explore issues of gender equality in society and everyday life. The discussion is democratic and centres on a weekly topic chosen by the society. Having recently received the inaugural OE Club’s and Societies grant, the club are looking forward to developing awareness of gender equality next year.

This is an opportunity for keen, young budding artists to work in the studio and use a wide range of materials and processes. This designated time is particularly useful as course work deadlines and hand-in dates approach. At key points during the course of the year, staff will involve the Art Club to lead workshops on particular techniques.

Egyptology Club exists to promote and explore the interest in Ancient Egyptian civilisation and language. We meet for a varied diet of talks, events, activities, games, and study. We have a programme to cater for all tastes and age groups. We usually have topical presentations: slide shows, virtual visits and talks on a diverse range of subjects from mummies and myths to history and monuments. One aim is that members should be able to decipher some of the inscriptions in local museums and books – or better yet - in Egypt! Practical activities are always popular; we make and play the ancient game of Senet and build accurate model pyramids. In each case, we put them in context and examine the history behind the artefacts.

Learn about electronics, experiment with circuits and develop your own projects, based on the Arduino microcontroller. All levels of experience welcome. The club has a good range of interesting components and modules to use or bring in your own circuit, modify it and investigate it, using the Electronics department’s range of test equipment.

Environmental Action Group (EAG) When: Where: Year group:

The EAG are interested in all things environmental at a local and global level. We aim to raise awareness of key environmental issues such as recycling and biodiversity, with weekly activities driven by the interests of the pupils in the group. Last year we had an ECO Week with speakers and workshops and a photo competition. Other activities during the year included making bird feeders and bug houses, researching owls and dissecting their pellets, planting vegetables and raising money for eco related projects. The group have purchased a wildlife camera trap and recorded footage of the wildlife around the School and put up bat boxes on the Senior School site.

Members of the group attend the annual two day B&NES Climate Summit and organise trips, which last year included a weekend trip to Cornwall and a visit to MJ Church who recycle the waste from KES.

An informal opportunity for all pupils to enhance their love of the world around them. The format will alternate every fortnight between inspirational presentations, heated debates and hands-on workshops, delivered by pupils and guest speakers, and amazing documentaries and films chosen by the pupils running the club. Last year’s guest speakers included a BBC cameraman who spoke about his journey down the ice rivers of Ladakh, a teenager from Bristol who inspired our pupils with her talk on an expedition to Arctic Norway, a local environmental consultant speaking about careers in geography, plus a managing director of a renewable’s company who introduced us to the world’s first large-scale tidal barrage scheme – in Swansea Bay!

If you have an interest in any part of our past and want to investigate it and talk about it – History Society is for you! History Society offers pupils with a keen interest in History (not just those taking exams), the opportunity to present, meet and discuss (nearly) anything of historical interest. Previous topics have included, ‘The Phantom Time Hypothesis’, ‘The Significance of the Big Mac’, ‘The Spanish Civil War’ and many more. The society is also open to those of you who would like to simply join us to listen and/or discuss aspects of our past. The world and its past is your oyster!

IFS Student Investor Club Timing and location arranged directly through Business & Economics department Years 9 – 13
The IFS Student Investor Club will start from the middle of September. Pupils are asked to form teams of four, come up with a trading name for the team and then register for the IFS Student Investor competition. Teams will start with a one month practice trading period when they can have a go at buying and selling shares and reading the markets. The ‘real’ IFS Student Investor competition consists of three rounds. From mid-October, each team of four pupils will invest an imaginary £100,000 in stocks and shares and (hopefully) watch their investment grow. Whilst the club meets once a week, pupils are able to make trades via on-line mobile devices at any time. The club will come together to track changes and trade any advice regarding market conditions. Twenty teams from each of the four UK regions who have turned the largest capital gain will then progress to the regional final. A series of quiz questions at the regional final determines which two teams progress to the national final in London. Following a problem-solving activity and a presentation to a panel of experts on a pre-issued topic, the winning team are rewarded with an all-expenses paid trip to New York.

You don’t need to have played golf before. Professionals from Cumberwell Park Golf Club in Bradford-On-Avon will be coming in to KES in the Autumn term to run ‘Tri-Golf’ sessions to help us build basic golf skills. After Christmas, once we have developed these skills in school, we’ll progress on to the driving range and other facilities at Cumberwell Park itself. KES Golf is open to boys and girls. All equipment will be provided.

Jiu Jitsu is a traditional Japanese Martial Art. In Jiu Jitsu Club, pupils have real fun in a positive and safe environment. We help build self-discipline and develop self-confidence, helping children overcome shyness and insecurity. We also give the juniors the opportunity to meet others at regional and national events and share a real sense of achievement. The mutual respect associated with traditional martial arts is a core philosophy of Jiu Jitsu. Through the active involvement of parents in the grading process, pupils are rewarded for good behaviour, respect and hard work both inside and outside the dojo. To progress through the grades, self-discipline is expected in all areas of life.

The School affiliates to the National School’s Equestrian Association. NSEA is the recognised body for equestrianism in schools throughout the UK, providing intra and inter-schools competitions for team and individual riders. Competitions for teams and individuals start at grass roots level and build up to National Schools’ qualifiers and annual Championships. Our aim is for all members of the School community currently pursuing their equestrian passion to be able to represent KES at prestigious inter-school equestrian competitions throughout the country. Disciplines include Dressage, Show Jumping, Arena Eventing (‘Jumping with Style’), One Day Events, Hunter Trials and Tetrathlons. Events take place at local, county, regional and national levels, culminating in the annual National Schools’ Championships in October.

Mrs Moreno is the team’s manager and will be coordinating our affiliation and team within school. Team training and team preparation will take place at suitable venues outside of school. KES Enterprise is an in-house enterprise scheme run by the department, catering for Year 12 pupils who wish to test out their entrepreneurial skills. The activity aims to introduce pupils to the realities of business and event planning within the safety of the School environment. In return, the company which the pupils set up, will donate at least 25% of any profits made to the chosen KES charity for that academic year. Pupils will decide upon a company name, choose a product or service, appoint individuals to different roles and deal with the financial elements of cash flow and breaking even on each project. Project leaders will take control and co-ordinate their peers whilst members of the department will cast their eye and experience over proceedings offering a helping hand as and when required.

Kumihimo is the traditional Japanese technique of braiding strands of silk to create intricately coloured cords. The cords, also called kumihimo, are strong but slender, and have a multitude of uses. It is an relaxing, mindful activity to complete while chatting with friends. No experience is necessary!

Pupils have a weekly 30 minute lesson with Mrs Tamblyn or Mrs Schofield, working towards a LAMDA (London Academy of Dramatic Art) examination. Pupils are entered for relevant grades depending on age and ability (Grades 1 – 8). For years 7 to 10 lessons take place during curriculum time and for years 11 to 13 lessons take place during lunchtimes, after school or study periods. At the examination, pupils perform two or three scenes (depending on which grade they are working towards). Grades 6, 7 and 8 (Bronze, Silver and Gold) carry UCAS points recognised by many universities. Pupils can be entered for solo or duo examinations. The price of these lessons is available on request from the Drama department.

FIRST® LEGO® League is a global science and technology competition for teams of pupils, to encourage an interest in real world issues and develop key skills that are crucial for their future careers. The pupils work together to explore a given topic and to plan, program and test an autonomous robot to solve several missions. Interested pupils from Years 7 to 9 are invited to join the club in the Spring Term and spend the rest of the year learning about and experimenting with Lego robots by solving short challenges. A team is selected from this group to compete in the FLL Competition, with work starting at the beginning of the Autumn Term before the regional tournament in Bristol in January.

Despite the name, this is not a society exclusively for those considering medicine as a career path. Rather, it is aimed at anyone interested in any area related to medical biology and healthcare. This includes the traditional vocational pathways in medicine, veterinary science and dentistry as well as other healthcare disciplines; biosciences, biomedical and forensics to name just a few! A predominantly pupil-led society, MedSoc provides an opportunity for students to gain valuable leadership and organisational skills, and determine the direction they want the society to take.
MUSIC
The aims of MedSoc are to work on some of the key skills required by healthcare careers; to provide a platform for sharing ideas and concerns around challenging current affairs topics and ethics; to develop the ability to review research papers and begin to understand the concept of evidence based medicine; to help students plan their approach to the application process and navigate their way through it. Sessions cover a wide range of activities from games and quizzes to presentations and outside speakers.

In an increasing global world, our pupil-led MUN offers a chance for you to learn about diplomacy, international relations and global politics as well as hone your debating skills. With weekend conferences mirroring the real United Nations, you have the opportunity to take on the opinion of one of the member states and debate the potential solutions to the world’s biggest problems. Topics range from ‘Water Wars’, ‘The Spread of AIDS to Child Soldiers’ and ‘Global Terrorism’. There is no better opportunity for you to deepen your understating of the economies, cultures and policy-making of our international partners, better preparing you for the world of tomorrow.

The first Socrates Club was set up by C. S. Lewis at Oxford University and was intended to provide a forum where thinkers could meet to discuss issues of philosophical, ethical, and religious significance. Pupils are invited to lead meetings on topics of their choice. Socrates Club has recently covered topics including the respective fates of the Ukraine and BBC3, sexism in the media, and the ethics of independent education.

Being able to touch type is an important modern life skill. You will use a program called Englishtype, in which the learning is self-directed and you will progress at your own pace. The program contains all the instructions needed to learn to type (both visual and verbal instructions). The multi-sensory design ensures that most pupils will learn independently. You can even enjoy learning to touch type, as part of the program involves practice with a game based format. Further independent practise will be needed to become a proficient touch typist.

We regularly play in the Mid-Somerset Festival Competition and have gained several trophies for our playing!
Repertoire: The title ‘Baroque Group’ does not limit our repertoire to the 17th and 18th Centuries, we also play up-to-date works using electric string instruments to perform rocky arrangements of the likes of Led Zeppelin, Muse and film scores to produce fun, varied and engaging performances.

As part of our special, year ‘round Side-by-Side partnership programme, KES Senior Orchestra members gain: free access to the majority of Bath Phil’s Concert programme; attend selected Bath Phil rehearsals; learn from professionals in our annual Bath Phil Sunday orchestral workshop; get to play alongside the whole of Bath Philharmonia in one of their rehearsals; the leader of the KES Senior Orchestra is mentored by the Bath Phil leader; you gain access to one of our five solo workshops (Upper Strings/Lower Strings/ Woodwind/Brass/Percussion) with top visiting Bath Phil professional players as well as getting to meet and work with world-class soloists! Cricket is the major boys’ and girls’ sport in the Summer Term. The School offers cricket to all abilities from Years 7 to 13 and covers all aspects of the game in these training sessions. During the term, the pupils receive weekly two hour games sessions at our picturesque Bathampton grounds and in addition they are offered after school training. The games sessions are generally technique based and the training nights look to cover other aspects of cricket including tactical and game play. At the younger ages, we have fixtures from A to C standard and play mainly a T/20 format so that we get children to fall in love with the game and develop a real passion, so that when they reach senior level they take full advantage of the varied fixture card. The senior fixture card comprises of T/20, 40 over and all day matches in our Cricket Week, which is the focal point of the cricketing calendar.

These sessions will provide a combination of individual skills and team structure/tactics, to allow for effective performance. From these sessions, a squad is selected to represent the School. The boys compete in the County rounds of the National Schools Indoor Hockey competition in late November with the potential of progressing through to the Regional and National rounds in December/January. In 2016 the U18 boys narrowly missed out on qualifying for the National Finals. We also offer developmental coaching sessions at lunchtimes during the Autumn Term, for players in Years 7-9, to build the fundamental skills of the indoor game.

Starting in the Spring Term, we run a Cricket Development Programme for boys and girls which is held at school using the indoor nets. Mr Brown, Head of Cricket and Elliott Robertshaw, Specialist Sports Coach (cricket) will lead the sessions. The boys and girls are invited to join the programme run before school. The aim of the course is to allow our talented cricketers from Year 7 to seniors to work on additional skills to enhance what is possible in a team training environment. We look at all areas that a cricketer needs to develop, which include technical, tactical, physical, mental and lifestyle skills. The players work intensively for an hour a week from 7.30 - 8.30am.

The emphasis in the hockey programme is to develop a range of core physical skills, mental strength including effective decision making under pressure, and to build good sporting character. The girls also have the opportunity to develop their skills further, at lunchtime sessions run throughout the Summer Term.

KES now runs a progressively comprehensive indoor hockey programme during the Autumn Term. Players in the respective year groups have the opportunity to develop core skills which are essential for the indoor game, whilst providing an excellent grounding for outdoor hockey. These sessions provide a combination of individual skills and team structure/tactics, to allow for effective performance. From these sessions, squads are selected to represent the School. The girls compete in the County rounds of the National Indoor Hockey competition in late November with the potential of progressing through to the Regional and National rounds in December/January. In 2016, the U16 girls reached the West of England Regional finals. We also offer developmental coaching sessions at lunchtimes during the Spring Term, for players in Years 7-9, to build the fundamental skills of the indoor game.

Fixtures are played during the week and also on some Saturdays for Seniors. We also enter the AEGON League for U13 and U15 girls and boys which allows our top players to compete in a national competition. King Edward’s School’s Inter-Form Sports’ programme is an integral part of school life. More pupils choose to participate in Inter-Form activities than in any other aspect of school life! Pupils represent their forms in 14 different sports and disciplines, catering for a broad range of skills and abilities. The centrepiece of the Inter-Form Sports’ programme is Sports Day, which is held annually at the University of Bath’s athletics track, where all pupils eagerly take part and where our annual winners are crowned.

During the term, boys receive a weekly, two hour games session at our Bathampton playing fields during the school day which provides and supports the development of individual and team skills and game awareness, ensuring our players are contact ready. In addition, boys participate in a weekly after school training session which for the U14 and U15 teams tends to have an emphasis on preparing for weekend fixtures, whilst for the U12 and U13 boys provides the opportunities for all boys to develop their skills and confidence further.

OUTWARD BOUND AT KING EDWARD’S SCHOOL King Edward’s School CCF is numbered among the oldest contingents in the country, establishing a corps in 1900. It is an army only section and, since 2006, has been proudly affiliated to the King’s Royal Hussars and combines their unique ‘brown beret’ with our very own original cap badge. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is one of the country’s most established initiatives, whose philosophy is all about ‘having a go’. King Edward’s annually runs the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards with over 84 pupils currently undertaking Bronze, 39 working towards Silver and 24 working towards their Gold. The annual Ten Tors Challenge is a testing expedition for teams of six over the Dartmoor National Park. It first took place in 1960. Based at Okehampton Camp there are three routes: 35 miles for pupils in Year 10, 45 miles for pupils in Year 12, and 55 miles for those in Year 13.

The CCF provides a unique and challenging environment where every cadet is taught the fundamentals of leadership, self-reliance, perseverance and loyalty. Heavily subsidised by the MOD, the wide range of activities offered include: First Aid, map-reading, field craft, parachuting, kayaking, climbing, rifle shooting, to name but a few. The cadets experience starts in Year 9 and follows a progressive nationally-recognised syllabus with opportunities for promotion for those who demonstrate leadership qualities.

Participation in the CCF fulfils the requirements of both the Skills and Volunteering sections of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and is an ideal addition to personal statements when applying to university.

Pupils enrol early in the Autumn Term. Expedition training takes place on Sundays, mainly during the Spring Term, with the practice and assessed expeditions in the Summer Term. Participants complete their own programme of activities throughout the year. Training takes place at KES and on the Mendips. Expeditions are on the Marlborough Downs and on the Mendip Hills. Year 9
Participants complete a programme of activities in four sections that involve helping the community, environment or animals, participating in a physical activity, developing new skills and planning, training for and completing an overnight expedition. Participants select their own programme of activities and set themselves goals or targets for each of three sections which they complete over a three to six month period. The sections are:

The fourth section, the Expedition is often the most memorable experience for pupils. In teams, pupils undertake an unaccompanied, self-reliant walking and camping expedition with an agreed aim and on their return give a presentation. In preparation, we hold training sessions on three Sundays, during the Spring Term. The practice expedition is currently in April on the Marlborough Downs. The assessed expedition is in May, and involves pupils walking around 20 miles in the Mendip Hills. Both involve an overnight camp.

Training will involve several break-time/lunchtime mentoring sessions, two Sunday school planning sessions, a practice expedition during the Spring Term and an assessed expedition during activities week. Training takes place at KES. Expeditions are in the New Forest and the Brecon Beacons. Year 10

The Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme is the next exciting stage in this much sought after programme. It is a step up from the Bronze Award and as such demands more time, commitment and responsibility from the participant. The award is introduced at the start of Year 10. Pupils choose a Physical, a Skill and a Volunteering activity to carry out for an hour a week (for durations ranging from 3 months to up to 12 months depending on whether the participant has completed the Bronze Award or not). In February and May, we run two Sunday training days in school, during which the pupils listen to kit and safety talks and then complete their route planning and route cards for both expeditions.
SPORT
The practice expedition is provisionally calendared during the end of the Spring Term and takes place in the New Forest. It consists of three days walking and two nights camping, carrying all necessary provisions in their rucksack. Team sizes are between four and seven. Each team has a mountain leader with them for at least the first two days to train them in terms of navigation and camp craft. The assessed expedition occurs during Activities Week and takes place in the Brecon Beacons. Teams are assessed on their ability to complete a challenging three day expedition independently. They are remotely supervised. The pupils choose an aim for both of their expeditions to research and learn about as they walk, such as how flora and fauna varying depending on elevation.

Each team then delivers a presentation to explain their aim. Once all the above sections are completed, the pupils will receive the Silver Award.

The Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme is the highest level of award that can be done in school. It requires a great deal of commitment and responsibility from the participant. The award is introduced at the end of Year 11 at the pre-sixth form course, but is open to all pupils aged 16 or over and in the sixth form. Pupils choose a Physical, a Skill and a Volunteering activity to carry out for an hour a week (for durations ranging from 6 months to up to 18 months depending on whether the participant has completed the Silver Award or not). In addition, they also need to undertake a residential which is five days away from home completing a course or volunteering at a centre – there are many opportunities for this, including learning to cook in a chalet in the Alps!

The award is launched at both the pre-sixth form day in June and in September, giving some the opportunity to begin their award over the Summer break after Year 11. Training occurs at various break times and one or two evenings in addition to two Sunday planning sessions at school, a practice expedition during the Easter break and an assessed expedition during activities week. Training takes place at KES. Expeditions are going to be run in the Brecon Beacons, Scotland and potentially the Alps, Slovenia or the Pyrenees. Years 12 & 13

Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a great opportunity to extend ones’ comfort zone, tackling challenges while also providing for a community through volunteering. Once all sections of the award have been completed, pupils will be invited to an award’s ceremony at St James’ Palace in London, where celebrity guests and royalty hand out the awards.

The assessed expedition will be done abroad or can be done in Year 13 at the same location as that year’s practice. The annual Ten Tors Expedition is one of a kind – organised by the Army, it enables young people to take part in an independent two-day expedition on Dartmoor, covering distances of 35, 45 or 55 miles over rough countryside in teams of six, being entirely selfreliant for the period of the expedition.
MUSIC
The School has a long record of participation in Ten Tors. Training begins in February in the Brecon Beacons, and moves on to Exmoor with the final team selection taking place after a final training weekend on Dartmoor.
