Purpose:

Records Israel’s deliverance from Egypt after 400 years.

Author:

Moses 1450-1410 BC while in the desert.

Background/Themes

Moses was a Hebrew boy who became a prince in Pharaoh’s palace. One day he saw mysterious flames coming from a burning bush, and soon after agreed to return to Egypt to lead Israel out of slavery. His story fulfilled the promise of God that the family of Jacob would multiply greatly in that land (Genesis 46:2) and it would be afflicted there (Gensis 15:13).

Redemptive Leadership

The book of Exodus is about the liberation of the Israel from slavery (sin) to Promise (Promise Land).

God’s lordship is over all of creation, shown through his unleashing of ten lifeshocking plagues.

“The Egyptians worked the people of Israel without mercy. They made their lives bitter, forcing them to mix mortar and make bricks and do all the work in the fields.”

Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, was cruel. All the Hebrew slaves were watched by brutal slave masters. Life was oppressive.

“But Moses said to the Lord, ‘If the Israelites will not listen to me, why would Pharaoh listen to me, since I speak with faltering lips?’”

If God asks us to do something, he will equip us to get it done.

God’s chosen leaders can struggle with fear and self-doubt when called to monumental tasks.

Exodus 9:1 Let Go

“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘Let my people go, so that they may worship me.’”

The Ten Plagues in Exodus represent God’s power over both Pharaoh and the Egyptian gods.

Passover Exodus 12:12 “I will pass through the land of Egypt and strike down every firstborn son and firstborn male animal in the land of Egypt.”

Deliverance

Exodus 14:13

Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only be still.”

The Passover was a celebration of the Israelites escape from slavery.

Lordship

Exodus 14:31 “And when the Israelites saw the mighty hand of the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant.”

God delivers His people—without limit.

God demonstrated his lordship over every aspect of creation by unleashing his power in 10 lifealtering plagues.

The spirit of discontent causes brokenness and divisiveness.

“You’re going to wear yourself out— and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself.”

Fatherly advice to Moses from Jethro, his father-in-law, on the importance of delegation.

Idols Exodus 20:5

“1st Commandment: I am the Lord your God.”

God gives us peace, purpose and extraordinary insights when we put Him in the right position of authority in our business.

“You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God.”

The culture of the day had many idols and many gods. Nothing was to compete with the one true God.

Exodus 20:15 Honesty

“You shall not steal.”

How basic is this? In a ruleless society with no uniform moral or civil system of laws, God gave his chosen people clear commandments and rules to protect them.

Recharging Exodus 23:12 “Six days do your work, but on the seventh day do not work, so that your ox and your donkey May rest, and so that the slave born in your household and the foreigner living among you may be refreshed.”

Exodus 31:6 Skill

“In the heart of all who are skillful, I have put skill.”

We are to cease our labor (achievement), reflect and be grateful to God for his provisions. This is not a suggestion it is a commandment!

Favor MC Exodus 33:13 “Let me know Your ways that I may know You, so that I may find favor in your sight.”

The gift of artistry (31:1).

God’s ways favor us in our roles as leaders, but, like Moses, we must seek His wisdom, for His ways are not our natural ways.

“My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

When God is near, there is no need for fear because we know our God is so much greater than the gravest danger.

Generations MC Exodus 34:7 “I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is effected—even children in the third and fourth generations.” Sin passes through the generations. It can become a stronghold to a family and must be confronted and resolved for restoration.

Exodus 35:31 Gifts

“He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom and understanding, in knowledge and all manner of workmanship.”

Moses is speaking about two men who have been supernaturally filled by God to lead the construction of the Tabernacle: Bezalel and Oholiab.

Tabernacle Exodus 36:1 “So Bezalel, Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the Lord has given skill and ability to know how to carry out all the work of constructing the sanctuary are to do the work just as the Lord has commanded.”

It took the talents, gifts and generosity of the whole community to construct the “tent of meeting” or tabernacle.

“So the cloud of the Lord was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the Israelites during all their travels.”

The tabernacle was God’s home among the Israelites. Soloman replaced it with the temple, 500 years later.
