Day 1: DEPART USA - ARRIVE HAVANA CUBA Upon arrival in Havana at the Jose Marti International Airport and clearing customs, meet your local English speaking Cuban Guide outside the baggage terminal. Your drive from the airport orients you with Cuba’s enigmatic capital city, whose nearly 500-year Old Havana is home to the largest collections of Spanish-Colonial architecture in the Americas. Make a photo stop and learn more about the Plaza de la Revolucion, the center of Cuban political life where millions of Cubans listened to speeches of Fidel Castro. Religion has always played an important role in Cuban society. Enjoy a fascinating walking tour of the Colon Cemetery founded in 1876, and noted for its elaborate sculpted memorials containing more than 500 major mausoleums and chapels. The cemetery is the final resting place for famous Cubans including artists, writers, musicians and ballplayers. Check into your hotel and unpack for your five night stay. Dinner is included at a local restaurant in Havana this evening. (D) Overnight: Havana Day 2 - OLD HAVANA (UNESCO) - MUSEUM OF THE REVOLUTION This morning enjoy a guided walking tour of pedestrian only Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See the beautiful Cathedral de la Havana, built in baroque style in 1748 and learn about its preservation and continuous restoration. Next, enjoy a fascinating tour of the Havana Club Rum Museum with a local Cuban rum expert to learn about the history and process of making Cuban Rum and an opportunity to sample the differences. Following lunch at a local Paladar in Old Havana this afternoon we visit the famous Museum of the Revolution that displays documents and artifacts, weapons and planes from the revolution. Learn about the Bay of Pigs, the 1961 historic clash between the CIA trained Cuban exiles & rebel forces. Next head to the charming fishing village of Jaimanitas to visit the incredible Home and Work Shop of world famous artist, painter and ceramicist Jose Fuster, often called the “Picasso of Cuba”. He has adorned an entire neighborhood with colorful ornate mosaics. Here we spend time with to discuss the influence of the artist’s work and their lives and community. Dinner is on your own this evening allowing you to explore the fine restaurants, cuisine and Jazz clubs of Havana. Perhaps even take in the world famous Tropicana Cabaret Show on your own that offers an evening of music and history at this famous nightclub show that presents song-and-dance performances of 1950’s Cuba. (B,L) Overnight: Havana Day 3 - HAVANA - CIGAR FACTORY - HABANA COMPAS This morning following breakfast we begin the day with a fascinating visit and guided tour with a local cigar expert to the La Corona Cigar Factory. See firsthand and learn about the history and the process of Cuban cigars being hand rolled. The factory rolls such brands as Hoya de Monterrey and Cuaba & Punch. Next enjoy a performance by the amazing Habana Compas Dance Group. Interact with the students and teachers to learn more about the Cuban dance culture. Meet a former famous professional Cuban baseball player and join in a discussion regarding the history and love of this game in Cuba and the U.S. Dinner is included this evening at a local Paladar. (B,L,D) Overnight: Havana Day 4: HAVANA - VINALES VALLEY (UNESCO) - PINAR DEL RIO Today we travel out of Havana and into the rural Cuban countryside to the Vinales Valley located in the western most mountainous range in Cuba and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This region, the western province of Pinar del Rio is known for its stunning scenery, a landscape of prehistoric looking flat-top mountains or “mogotes”, tobacco plantations, caves and rivers. Next, visit a traditional Tobacco Farm and Farmhouse to meet with the farmer to learn about tobacco cultivation, the drying process and experience a cigar rolling demonstration inside the drying hut. Enjoy a visit inside his farmhouse, meeting and interacting with his family while enjoying some Cuban coffee. A great opportunity to witness up close, how Cuban families live in a rural setting. Next enjoy lunch at the beautiful Finca Paraiso Paladar (organic farm) offering incredible panoramic views of the Vinales Valley and an opportunity to meet the Cuban family that owns this organic farm. Later stop at the Los Jasmines viewpoint offering incredible views of the Vinales Valley and an opportunity to enjoy the spectacular scenery and take photos of this beautiful and unique region of Cuba. Return to Havana later this afternoon with the evening on your own to explore Havana’s many outstanding Paladars, Jazz clubs or simply relax. (B,L) Overnight: Havana Day 5: HAVANA - HEMINGWAY FARM - CLASSIC CAR CLUB Next enter the world of Ernest Hemingway with a visit to Hemingway’s Farm, Finca La Vigia (meaning ‘lookout house’). This beautiful property hosts the house where the Nobel Prize winner lived with his wife Martha for 21 years. View the perfectly preserved home where many of the Hemingway personal furniture and belongings remain intact. View his famous boat on display, the Pilar in which he used to patrol for Nazis in the Caribbean waters and featured in his novel “Islands in the Stream”. A photo stop is made at the Morro Castle, built in 1589, to protect the mouth of the Havana Harbor. “Morro” in Spanish means a rock which is very visible from the sea and therefore serves as a navigational landmark. Perched on the headland on the opposite side of the harbor from Old Havana it can be viewed from miles around as it dominates the port entrance. Next visit the San Jose Craft Market and Art Center to meet and interact with the local artists to discuss and learn of the importance of their art in Cuban culture. Learn from the artists who share their experiences of pursuing the arts with limited access to materials and funding. Before dinner, meet the local Old Style Car Club owners. A chance to interact and talk with the owners and learn why Havana’s streets are filled with vintage American automobiles and understand what it takes to keep them on the road. Enjoy a drive through the streets of Havana in a vintage car to your farewell dinner at a one of Havana’s top local Paladars. After dinner you have an opportunity to meet and discuss with the owners how this private Paladar enterprise works in Cuba. Day 1 - ARRIVE CHARLESTON Arrive in Charleston, SC and meet your Tour Director. Check into your hotel for a two night stay. Originally founded as Charles Towne in 1670 this cultured and refined city is a beautifully preserved treasure. Steeped in history and quintessentially Southern, the city’s past is evident in its genteel charm. Tonight enjoy a Welcome Dinner with your Tour Director and fellow travelers. (D) Day 2 - CHARLESTON SIGHTSEEING This morning enjoy a Charleston City Tour viewing historic homes and restored buildings that have helped give Charleston the reputation as the “charm spot” of the South. Enjoy a stop at the interesting City Market. Later travel to the Charleston City Marina to board a boat and travel to Fort Sumter. The narrated tour features the harbor along with a guided tour of the Fort which is only accessible by boat. It was here on April 12, 1861 that Confederate troops fired the first shots of the Civil War. After dinner enjoy a Holiday Lights Drive through one of Charleston’s popular districts decked out for the holiday season. (B) Day 3 - CHARLESTON - BEAUFORT - SAVANNAH This morning visit one of the most photographed plantations in America, Boone Hall Plantation, a 738-acre estate once the center of a cotton plantation and still a working farm. The half mile impressive entry is lined with Oak Trees and dotted with camellias and azaleas. Next travel along South Carolina’s scenic coastal route to the charming town of Beaufort, which has retained much of its pre-Civil War character. Enjoy a Beaufort Horse Drawn Carriage Tour to learn about the local Civil War History and see Antebellum & Victorian Architecture. Then travel to the fascinating city of Savannah, America’s first planned city, whose entire restored center - more than 1,000 buildings - is a registered National Historic Landmark. Tonight enjoy a southern dining experience at the historic Pirates’ House Restaurant, which has been welcoming seafarers and visitors since 1753. After dinner enjoy some of the wonderful holiday decorations & lights Savannah has to offer. (B,D) Day 4 - SAVANNAH SIGHTSEEING This morning enjoy a Savannah City Tour with a local guide. Learn about charming Savannah’s history, the nucleus of the colonial settlement in Georgia and the destination of General Sherman’s 1864 “March to the Sea”. Stroll along the cobblestone streets of Factors Walk and River Street, where old cotton warehouses have been converted into shops, art galleries and restaurants. Enjoy some time at leisure this afternoon. (B) Day 5 - SAVANNAH - JEKYLL ISLAND - ST. AUGUSTINE Today travel to Jekyll Island & take a Trolley Tour to view the grand “cottages” that once belonged to such notables as the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts and J.P. Morgan. Enjoy lunch at the famous Jekyll Island Club, once owned by a group of American millionaires, this club was considered one of the most exclusive social clubs in America. Later travel south to the oldest city in the U.S., St. Augustine, first settled in 1565. Spend two nights in this Florida city known for its beauty, charismatic energy & historic character. Day One: We’ll leave the Valley with a stop for coffee & goodies, on our way to Yuma, Arizona, where we’ll enjoy lunch on self. After lunch we’ll head for Alpine, California and the beautiful Viejas Casino Resort, our headquarters for the next three nights. The Viejas Resort offers three luxury hotel towers, along with six restaurants, a lush pool and lounge area, an outlet shopping center, full-service spa and so much more. We’ll be offered $10 towards any of the food outlets, plus $25 in gambling bucks for the first two nights of our stay. We’ll check into our hotel rooms, enjoy dinner on self at the restaurant of your choice and a free evening. Day Two: We’ll enjoy breakfast on self at the hotel—an opportunity to use your $10 credit. After breakfast it’s back on the bus and we’ll head into San Diego to set sail on a 2-hour narrated harbor cruise—aboard a yacht that offers both indoor and outdoor areas. We’ll explore more than 50 storied landmarks, we’ll cruise past Seaport Village, Shelter Island, Coronado Island, Point Loma, Cabrillo National Monument and more. We’ll encounter marine life and sea birds, and enjoy remarkable photo opportunities. From here we’ll head to Old Town, a state protected historic neighborhood which includes many buildings from the period of 1820-1870. Known as the birthplace of San Diego, Old Town is home to charming shops & galleries, great little restaurants and historical sites. After breakfast we’ll head out to explore historic Highway 101. Once the principal north/south route in California, with the construction of Interstate 5 in the 1960’s, most of Highway 101 was bypassed and barely affected by California’s explosive growth. Nowadays historic Highway 101 gives us a look back at California in its early days, and the entire 935-mile route has been given historic designation by the state of California. We’ll journey north on Highway 101, stopping to explore Del Mar, the destination of choice for movie stars and horse racing fans—offering beautiful beaches and a charming downtown. We’ll continue our journey north to Solano Beach, a small coastal community known for its unique shops and galleries. Public art is a passion in Solano Beach and we’ll enjoy the murals and architecture. From here we’ll make our way to Encinitas, known as the surf and flower capital of the world; then on to Carlsbad, home to beautiful sandy beaches and three really unique lagoons. Our next stop is Oceanside, where we’ll visit the Oceanside Pier, the longest over-the-water pier on the West Coast. We’ll enjoy a 360-degree view of the Pacific Ocean and coastline to the north and south. Along the way we’ll grab lunch on self, before arriving in La Jolla, known as “the jewel” of San Diego. Surrounded on three sides by the sea and backed by the slopes of Mt. Soledad, La Jolla’s gorgeous coastline is one of the most popular destinations in California. Later we’ll travel back to our hotel for dinner on self and a free evening. Day Four: Breakfast is on self at the hotel, and after breakfast it’s bags out and we’re headed for home. Historic and charming, Flagstaff is home to many great little restaurants. After lunch it’s back on the bus, and we’re headed into Southwest Colorado and the Four Corners Region. This is a land of unsurpassed natural beauty and incredible history. We’ll check into Sky Ute Casino Resort, our luxurious headquarters for the next three nights. Later we’ll enjoy dinner on self, with several amazing restaurants to choose from, and a free evening. Check out the indoor pool, fitness center, bowling alley, miniature golf course, or the casino if you are so inclined. Day Two: Breakfast is on self at the hotel before jumping back the bus headed for Mesa Verde National Park. Spanish for Green Table, Mesa Verde offers a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for over 700 years, from AD 600 to 1300. Today the park protects nearly 5,000 known archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. These sites are some of the most notable and best preserved in the United States. We’ll also enjoy lunch on self at The Far View Terrace, offering a wide variety of choices along with local favorites, such as Navajo tacos. Late afternoon, we’ll return to our hotel, where we’ll enjoy a free evening and dinner on self. Day Three: Breakfast is on self at the hotel. After breakfast, it’s back on the bus headed for Durango, just 20 minutes away. We’ll board the Durango/Silverton, a historic train on 45 miles of rails originally laid in 1882, between the railroad-built town of Durango, and the mining town of Silverton. We’ll travel along the Animas River through wilderness inaccessible by any road! We’ll arrive in Silverton, Colorado, a National Historic Landmark, with plenty of time to enjoy lunch on self, with several wonderful restaurants to choose from. We’ll also explore the downtown area, home to unique shops, art galleries and some very interesting architecture. We’ll return to Durango by motorcoach, offering an entirely different perspective of this remarkably scenic region. The show’s title was inspired by Cline’s letters to Seger, which were consistently signed “Love ALWAYS… Patsy Cline.” Tales of Patsy’s life on the road are told with down-home country humor and brought to vibrant life through her music. Evidence of human use of these dwellings can be traced back 2,000 years, when the presence of water in this dry land made the canyon rare and valuable to its early human inhabitants. There are four beautiful lakes in Prescott: Goldwater, Watson, Willow and Lynx. We’re going to visit them all, with a stop first on Prescott’s famous Whiskey Row for lunch on self, before we begin this exploration. Once a block of 40 saloons driven by the gold rush culture, Whiskey Row drew cowboys, gamblers, prospectors, bawdy girls and outlaws. Today Whiskey Row is home to not just its saloons, but also galleries, charming shops, antique stores and several wonderful restaurants. After lunch we’re off to Goldwater Lake, the jewel in the crown of the Prescott National Forest. From here we’ll head northeast to enjoy a spectacular driving tour of Watson and Willow Lakes. Known as the twin lakes, Watson and Willow are in the Granite Dells of Prescott, an area so scenic that it has seen more than its fair share of western movie shoots and was once home to the very popular Garden of the Gods Resort. An otherworldly stretch of gigantic boulders, Granite Dells runs along Granite Creek, with Watson and Willow Lakes sitting right in the middle making for the most remarkable of vistas. From here we’ll make our way to Lynx Lake, in the cool and pine-scented Bradshaw Mountains. So completely different from the twins, Lynx Lake is heavily wooded, and surrounded by tall Ponderosa pines, scrub oak and Manzanita. The Pennsylvania Amish of Lancaster County are America’s oldest Amish settlement, and where thousands still live a centuries-old ‘Plain’ lifestyle. Visit an Amish Farm & House to learn about their faith, culture, distinctive dress and way of life that forbids the use of electricity or telephones in the home.
