THE CHAMBER! On behalf of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce, please allow me to take this opportunity to thank you for reading this Business Guide and welcome you to the Chamber. The Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce is one of the most active and dynamic accredited Chambers of Commerce on the west coast. NEWPORT BEACH
HARBOR BUSINESS
WATERFRONT BUSINESSES ABOUND BY LYNN SELICH Newport Beach has garnered its world-renowned reputation thanks to its extraordinary beaches and breathtaking coastline, world-class shopping, dining and lodging selections, its famous and sometimes infamous residents, but perhaps its most unique attribute is our magnificent harbor. The multifaceted businesses that surround and serve upon her are an integral part of the vibrant fabric of our seaside community. Along with its stunning beauty, Newport Harbor’s economic vitality and diversity is showcased in an impressive variety of businesses that line her waterways, serving both residents and visitors alike. From waterfront restaurants to office complexes, recreational and boating-related businesses and more, Newport Harbor is its own unique MVP within the city’s robust business complex.

Waterline, with its nautical-inspired, lightfilled dining room, is located at the Balboa Bay Club & Resort and features seasonal and fresh water-to-table menus including a popular Sunday brunch. Those looking for a more hip, casual gastropub scene need look no further than A&O (short for “Anchors & Oceans”). With its large outdoor fireside lounge, A&O embraces the rich history of the iconic Balboa Bay Club & Resort while bringing a fresh approach to the hearty dishes and creative cocktails on the menu. Because Newport Beach is a boater’s paradise, popular restaurants offering public docking spaces are a must. ISLAND CHARM Perhaps no other marina business is as long-standing and charming as the iconic Balboa Island Ferry. Owned and operated for nearly 100 years, the Beek family has provided continuous service for passengers since 1919. Though the harbor crossing between Balboa Island and Balboa Peninsula is less than a thousand feet, the 4-milean-hour trip on the ferry is at once magical and practical for its riders. Each ferry can hold up to three cars and 75 passengers, and to date approximately one million people annually have been safely transported back and forth across Newport Harbor. In addition to the ferry, the Beek family also owns and operates the full-service Island Marine Fuel, open 365-days a year with its own mini-mart and full-service tackle store, and where a cup of coffee is always free while you fuel up or stop in for bait. Across the harbor just south of the Fun Zone in the historic Balboa Village is the other full-service fuel dock, Hills Boat Service, which has served Newport Harbor since 1947 and is known for their diesel fuel delivery services from its Coast Guard approved tanker. Last but not least, Petrosea Fuel Dock offers its customers both fuel, bait and light refreshments from its diminutive dock near the Balboa Fun Zone.
Hornblower Cruises
has both land and sea recreational and facility offerings, as well as a public fitness circuit, basketball courts, nautical-themed playground and picnicking areas. Public docks for diners are also offered throughout the harbor at The Cannery, Bluewater Grill, The Dock, Woody’s Wharf, Back Bay Bistro, Rusty Pelican, 3-Thirty-3, Sol Cocina, Pizza Nova, Billy’s at the Beach, Newport Landing and Harborside Restaurant. For some truly unique on-water experiences, especially when it comes to a wedding, corporate team-building or Christmas Boat Parade experience, Newport has a variety of charter companies featuring some of the most enviable vessels on the west coast. The 96-foot Electra, a beautiful 1929 fantail motor yacht which was featured at the 2017 Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival is available through Electra Cruises, one of their five vessels for charter. Book a “Full Moon”, or “Summer Sunset” cruise, or live jazz champagne Sunday brunch on one of the spectacular vessels offered by Hornblower Cruises and Events. A favorite pastime for many, electric boat cruising is one of the most popular ways in which to enjoy an afternoon on the water. Duffy Electric Boats is perhaps the brand most recognized in this category, but Newport Harbor is home to Lear Electric Boats as well. Whether its electric boat rentals, sightseeing, whale watching or coastal tours, any number of local companies are at the ready. Newport Coastal Adventures, Newport Landing, Davey’s Locker Sport Fishing & Whale Watching, Admiral Yacht Charters, Charter Yachts, South Coast Yachts, Pacific Avalon, Classic Yacht Excursions, Newport Beach Sailing Charters, Village Boat Rentals, California Recreation Company and Balboa Boat Rentals are all options for locals or visitors.

F
CREATIVE, ALGORITHM AGENCY
or Algorithm Agency founders Joey Karam and Daniel Mickelson, digital marketing is more than the sum of its parts. It has to have just the right combination of strategic elements, and this is where they shine. By masterfully leveraging marketing tools like Google and Facebook ads, trend jacking, crowd-sourcing, email drip automations and more, Algorithm is fast becoming one of Orange County’s most sought-after agencies with offices on the Newport Harbor waterfront. To date, Algorithm has helped drive more than $42-million in sales for their coast-to-coast client roster, including 20 companies in 11 different industries. This year alone they’ve spent more than half-a-million dollars in Google and social media ads, and sent nearly 5-million emails on behalf of their clients. “We call ourselves the ‘anti-agency’ because we approach marketing challenges and opportunities differently than your typical firm, but more importantly we see exceptional results,” says CEO Joey Karam. “A great example: our Marketing Blueprint workshops where we facilitate the process of developing custom marketing outlines for our clients. In three hours, we are able to identify how our clients can best scale and market their business,” he added. “Oh, and we have a lot of fun in the process too.” Fairly new Chamber members, they have primarily focused their involvement with NAVIGATE ‘Modern Professionals’ group which is dedicated to providing a unique, interactive experience with content that engages young business leaders in the 25-40 age group. Right up their alley. While Joey is the entrepreneurial strategist specializing in the details of everything from advanced Facebook Power Editor demographics targeting, to email drip automations, to analyzing
market opportunities, Daniel is the driving force behind Algorithm’s creative team. Not one piece of creative content goes anywhere before he reviews and approves everything from the smallest social media post to the largest national ad campaign. An expert panelist for Facebook, Daniel studied marketing selling strategies abroad at New College in Oxford. His experience includes time at the LA-based powerhouse agency David & Goliath, as well as marketing director for a $25-million, well-known restaurant group. “My goal for every client is to incorporate imagery that is stunning without exception and headlines that will stop their target audience in their tracks,” says Daniel. Friends outside of work, the two are even in a band together, both guitarists who play with energy and grit. And they both like working with non-profits and giving back with their time and talents as much as possible. “We like working with and being good people,” says Joey. When asked what they’d tell their peers about becoming active with the Chamber, they both agreed “We would tell them, ‘go for it!’”

Joe joined the Newport Beach Chamber in 2008 and since that time has been actively involved in numerous facets of the organization including participation as an Ambassador, on the Government Affairs Committee, Finance and Membership Committees, Navigate, Commodores, Athletic Awards Dinner, Christmas Boat Parade and more. Never one to grow any moss, the ambitious entrepreneur handily earned bragging rights when, at 27 years old, he became the youngest Commodore in Chamber history and went on to become the youngest Board Chairman at the ripe old age of 29. With a Bachelor of Science in Business Finance and Entrepreneurship from the University of Arizona, Joe’s expertise in finance and investment strategies is well-matched with his calm demeanor and gracious communication skills. Humble in his accomplishments, he says “I am very proud of my Chamber involvement and wear it as a badge of honor. It has been the single biggest revenue generator for my practice and has been integral in connecting me within the community I live, work and play.” And the bonus? “Some of my closest friendships have grown out of my involvement with the Newport Chamber.” Joe launched Spinnaker Investment Group, a privatelyowned, boutique investment company with his business w w w.newpor tbeach.com

The Latin term originates from ‘pontifex maximus’ – meaning, in part, ‘bridge-builder’ - and is the reference she feels best encompasses her higher purpose, passion and abilities. “As a pontifex I am a master builder - not of bridges or cities, but rather of people, talent, skills, and resources,” says Rachel. “I have a consistent track record of creating entities that are strong and powerful. Connections and networks are the tools of my trade that have enabled me to build companies, industries, organizations, teams, campaigns, and more. I love my trade and I think it shows through my clients’ successes.” A fairly new member to the Chamber, Rachel is looking forward to becoming more involved, both through the Board of Directors and NAVIGATE, Modern Professionals group. or restaurateur extraordinaire Mario Marovic, who grew up immersed in the hustle and bustle of his parents Fullerton-based bar and restaurant, a life in the food and beverage industry seemed like a given. As a first-generation American born in Los Angeles, Mario’s parents went in search of the American Dream risking everything to emigrate from communist Yugoslavia to provide a better life for their children. That better life came with hard work and sacrifice, the two most important ingredients of success. But watching his parents work seven days a week, nearly 365 days a year, running their “mom and pop” establishment and later working alongside them in the family business had him dreaming of a different path. Mario decided that the world of finance was where he would turn his attentions. After graduating from USC with a BS in Business with an emphasis on Entrepreneurship, and an MBA in Finance and Marketing, he moved to San Francisco in pursuit of a commercial banking career and successfully landed a position with a renowned Silicon Valley bank. Early on however, Mario realized that the corporate banking environment was simply not conducive to his personality, his entrepreneurial spirit was pulling him to create his own destiny. He missed the daily interaction and challenges of the family business and he knew it was time to commit to the industry he literally grew up in. Like any great relationship, he didn’t realize how much he loved it until he got too far away - he knew it was time to go home. So in 2004, Mario, now living back in Orange County, jumped in with both feet and began simultaneous construction on Landmark Steakhouse in Corona del Mar and the District Lounge in Old Towne Orange. He became an active member of the Newport Beach Chamber in 2006, and since that time, Chamber involvement and ongoing philanthropic activities have become an

integral part of his success. Mario credits President Steve Rosansky’s leadership of the Chamber and the continuous support and participation the Chamber provides through events like ribbon-cutting ceremonies that help his businesses thrive. “We continue to receive positive feedback from the community and steady growth in revenues, and the Chamber is a part of it all. Our continued success enables us to hire more employees, serve more guests and ultimately give back even more to a community we love.” In 2016, Mario and his partners established Lounge Group Consulting which has gone on to acquire and run Newport’s famous Stag Bar and the nearby Dory Deli, The Matador Cantina in Fullerton, as well as The Wild Goose, Pierce Street Annex, The Country Club (2018 opening), and Playa Mesa (2018 opening)

all in Costa Mesa. Earlier this year, they received approval from the City to expand Dory Deli (adjacent to the Newport Beach Pier), and last year, they rebranded The Stag Bar + Kitchen, the original (and oldest) bar in Orange County, established in 1908. As an example of putting his philanthropic philosophy into play, when they purchased Malarky’s Irish Pub on the peninsula they made a point of continuing with the Pub’s 40-year tradition of sponsoring a table for the Newport Beach Police Appreciation Breakfast. “Our mission from the beginning has been to add value to each of our locations through proactive community involvement. It’s also a priority for us to continue with positive, long-standing traditions established within the various neighborhoods we’ve become an integral part of here in Newport Beach as well as our other locations,” says Mario. “Part of Lounge Group’s core business model is to promote its businesses through charitable acts and community service. As a result, not only have we seen positive feedback from the community, we’ve also seen an increase in sales thanks to our commitment to responsible, community-minded business practices.” This year, Malarky’s is celebrating its 40-year anniversary after being established in September of 1977. Malarky’s is the only traditional Irish pub in the Newport Beach Peninsula and has always been a special place for Mario. It's the pub where he would hang out and the one he dreamed of owning many years ago, and at only 43, making that dream come true is one of his greatest accomplishments - a date with destiny. “Being able to continue Malarky’s traditions was important to my partner Brent Ranek and me,” he says. “We recognized and value Malarky’s impact on the local Newport Beach culture. Many of the employees and patrons have been coming in for decades, there are pictures of our regulars all over our walls. People have been coming for 40 years and now we see their children coming in which is pretty special. The Malarky’s tradition is staying alive one generation after another, it’s very satisfying for us to be able to make that happen.” It’s a good thing for Newport the prodigal son returned home.

With every luxury automotive dealership one could wish to choose from, there’s no better place to put the pedal to the metal than Newport Beach. If you’re looking for a relaxing scenic cruise, head down the Pacific Coast Highway either south to Laguna Beach or northward towards Long Beach. You’ll find beautiful coastline and

Ocean Boulevard, home to Lookout Point (facing the harbor entrance) and Inspiration Point (facing Corona del Mar) are a short but scenic jaunt on the bluffs above Big Corona, also known as a prime picnicking and photo-opp spot. While cruising our stunning coastline is a popular pastime in Newport Beach, car and motorcycle shows and galleries are also an integral part of the community’s culture. Locals and visitors alike can get a jump start for their week at the Balboa Car Show every Sunday from 7 a.m.

to 9 a.m. at the Balboa Village (Fun Zone) Parking Lot at 607 East Balboa Boulevard at Palm Street. It’s the only weekly car show in Newport Beach. Admission is free and spectators can enjoy a walk through an automobile lover’s fantasy land with Newport Bay on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. Dozens of show entries showcase a range of vehicles and motorcycles from exotic and modern to vintage and antique. Every week the show presents an unparalleled collection of stunning curves, automobile ingenuity and power
under the hood. With several coffee houses and eateries nearby, it’s become a classic Newport Beach tradition. New on the car show scene is the monthly Cars & Café at Moulin Bistro on Bristol Street North. An impressive lineup of lux automobiles, along with lots of “car people” can be found here, talking shop over breakfast and lattes in the finest of French style. At the Lyon Air Museum by John Wayne Airport, in addition to its historic flying machines, the museum also displays vintage vehicles from the collection of Gen. William Lyon. A little further up the road, the Marconi Automotive Museum houses the collection of Newport Beach’s Dick Marconi. Simply put, Marconi likes his cars fast. (Think Ferraris and Mustangs). There are more than 70 automobiles in his collection, including a 1950 sports car worked on by Enzo Ferrari himself. The Museum doubles as an event center, with proceeds from the operation benefiting the Marconi Foundation for Kids. Not far from Marconi is the Crevier Classic Cars’ showroom which showcases more than 100 impressive classic, vintage and rare automobiles. Their unique and elegant event space is a terrific venue for corporate events, weddings and other special events.
Now and then, you-know-what happens and at the top of the list are car accidents. When the Russo and Steele Newport Beach Collector Automobile Auction rolls into town each June it is an event not to be missed. The high-energy live auction features hundreds of highly collectible fine European sports, American muscle, hotrods, customs, exotics and competition cars on the sales block. TOURISM
KEEPING VITAL CITY SERVICES, JOBS AND THE LOCAL ECONOMY RESILIENT
D
Tourism in Newport Beach is big business and a significant source of city revenue which ensures services provided by the City of Newport Beach are maintained at the highest level. It is also vital to providing much-needed jobs and keeping the local economy moving in the right direction. “Tourism is a $1 billion a year industry for Newport Beach that employs nearly 10,000 people,” says Gary Sherwin, President and CEO of Visit Newport Beach, the official destination marketing organization for Newport Beach. "Seven million people visit the city annually and if these visitors didn’t come, it would cost each Newport Beach resident an additional $991.31 in taxes each year to keep city government services flowing at the existing
level. Tourism is a critical part of the city’s economic vitality as well as a way to showcase our beautiful city to the world.” Newport Beach & Company reported that for fiscal 2016 their group sales and leisure marketing efforts resulted in more than 182,620 rooms booked, resulting in $93.6 million dollars in revenue for the city. According to STR, Inc. – a leader in hotel research and data – that figure is equivalent to nearly 30 percent of all rooms sold in Newport Beach last fiscal year – a historic high. As a result of their robust marketing efforts, Newport Beach hosted 7 million visitors who spent more than $1 billion dollars between July 1, 2015, and June 30, 2016. In April of 2009, the Newport Beach Tourism Business
Improvement District (NBTBID) was formed by the City of Newport Beach pursuant to the Property and Business Improvement District Law of 1994 (Streets and Highways Code Sections 36600 et seq.) to help fund marketing and sales promotion efforts for Newport Beach tourism businesses. The NBTBID was renewed by the City Council for a 10-year term in January of 2014, set to expire in 2024. The NBTBID was formed at the request of the original member lodging businesses to provide marketing and sales promotions to increase tourism and to market Newport Beach as a tourist, meeting and event destination. These services are designed to benefit NBTBID members - those hotels and resorts that are assessed within the city.
As of February 1, 2014, eight of the major hotels in Newport Beach belong to the NBTBID including the Balboa Bay Club & Resort, The Duke Hotel Newport Beach, Hyatt Regency Newport Beach, Island Hotel Newport Beach, Newport Beach Marriott Bayview, Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa, Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort and Marina, and the Radisson Newport Beach. Thanks to healthy tourist spending in Newport Beach, the city’s economy here is healthy and robust. With more than 20,000 businesses, tourism revenue generates jobs and also supports the wealth of amenities that the community enjoys. Many of these amenities might not be possible without the level of tourist traffic that comes and goes through Newport Beach every day.

THE STORY OF SUGAR ‘N SPICE, THE ORIGINAL FROZEN BANANA Bob & Dorothy (Dot) Cook opened Dot & Bob’s Candy Shop on Balboa Island in the 1940’s. When their son, Don, was about 12-years-old, his mother asked him to put some bananas in the refrigerator but he mistakenly put them in the freezer. When found, the frozen bananas were about to be tossed out when Bob had the idea to dip them in fudge. They dipped another and rolled it in English Toffee crumbs. They were so good that Dot & Bob’s started selling frozen bananas. Sugar ‘n Spice in the 1960’s Dot & Bob’s was sold in 1945 and became Sugar ‘n Spice. They began to also sell blocks of vanilla ice cream with a tongue depressor wedged inside, dunked in melted chocolate and then covered with a topping -thus the Balboa Bar was born. Brad Schultz (second from the left in the banana yellow uniform) worked at Sugar ‘n Spice in the 1960’s when Bob Fitch was the owner. Crates of bananas were delivered in the back alley each week and sorted by size. They were peeled, stuck in a stick and then frozen for 24 hours. There was a vat of melted milk chocolate at each window so customers could watch their bananas being dipped and rolled in their choice of toppings – chopped peanuts, crumbled butter brickle, rainbow sprinkles or chocolate sprinkles (jimmies). In 1995, Helen Connolly bought the business from Betty Banto who taught her how to make the perfect Balboa Bar. Sugar ‘n Spice & Arrested Development In the early to mid-2000’s, the prime-time TV show Arrested Development brought a lot of attention to the frozen banana

From the families who’ve been enjoying and sharing our treats for generations to the adventurous daytraveller exploring the island for the very first time, we invite everyone to stop by and taste what makes Sugar ‘n Spice such a special and delicious part of the Balboa Island community. BUSINESS CENTERS OF NEWPORT BEACH
Even the most discerning shopper is certain to find the goods and services they seek in Newport Beach which has more than 21,000 actively licensed businesses in the city. Business districts are separated into “villages,” each with its own flavor and appeal. From a day of shopping along the coast to a night of fine dining on the harbor, you’ll find that each business is as unique as its village.
NEWPORT CENTER
BALBOA VILLAGE
residents and business owners creates a strong sense of place for this unique village.
Spanning more than 600 acres in the heart of Newport Beach, Newport Center is one of the city’s most metropolitan and frequented locales. The Center is well-known for its retail opportunities and professional services, as well as its elegant buildings and panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. It is home to Fashion Island, a world-class outdoor shopping venue which features nearly 200 retailers and restaurants and a cinema complex. Additional conveniences, as well as dining and entertainment options, exist along its perimeter. Newport Center is also comprised of 24 premier low-rise and high-rise office buildings, which house national corporate headquarters, financial conglomerates, and medical service centers. Newport Center is also home to a recently completed Civic Center, worldclass City Hall and Main Library.
Home to the landmark Balboa Pavilion and the Balboa Pier, Balboa Village is situated between Newport Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The Village offers more waterfront recreational activities per square inch than any other area of Orange County. Retail shops and restaurants cater to the beach crowds that flock to this area year‑round. The lighted Fun Zone ferris wheel, which can be seen from a distance both day and night, welcomes visitors to explore this seaside business area. The newest attraction, Discovery Cube's Ocean Quest, is a great place to learn about the ocean and harbor as well.
MARINERS MILE
CORONA DEL MAR VILLAGE
CANNERY VILLAGE
BALBOA ISLAND Home to charming retail shops and striking beach cottages, Balboa Island is a favorite tourist destination in Newport Beach. The area’s focal point is Main Street, a tree-lined walkway where small businesses and restaurants reside. Measuring 2.5 miles around, the island is reached by a picturesque bridge at the end of Jamboree Road. The landmark Balboa Island Ferry, in operation since the 1920s, shuttles people in cars, on bikes and on foot back and forth across the harbor to the Balboa Peninsula.

Corona del Mar, or “Crown of the Sea,” is located along East Pacific Coast Highway just blocks from the beach. Visitors and residents enjoy exploring one-ofa-kind retail stores, shopping for groceries at the Farmers Market, and admiring spectacular ocean views. The famous nautical community of Mariners Mile is located along West Pacific Coast Highway. “Everything nautical” can be found in this part of town, including several yacht brokers and charter services. Visitors may enjoy elegant dining cruises or romantic gondola rides from one of the many charter companies in the Mariners Mile Marina. Numerous fine dining restaurants specializing in fresh seafood line both sides of the highway, with those fronting Newport Harbor possessing spectacular views.
Historic Cannery Village encompasses eight square blocks of unique shops, antique dealers and cafes. Local artists regularly display their works in outdoor art shows and in the many village galleries. Nearby McFadden Square, site of the city’s first port, is surrounded by several retail shops and restaurants bustling with beach goers seeking some of the best surf in town.
AIRPORT AREA Centrally located near the 405 and 73 freeways, John Wayne Airport (Orange County’s only commercial service airport), has given rise to several surrounding businesses in the airport area. Its location complements larger businesses with the potential for growth and expansion. A vast number of high‑rise buildings encircle the airport, housing everything from financial institutions to hotels to technology-based businesses.
WEST NEWPORT West Newport is comprised of a string of businesses approaching the border between Newport Beach and Huntington Beach. Located on Pacific Coast Highway just blocks from the beach, this area is a popular destination for tourists and bustles with activity during peak summer months. Both locals and visitors enjoy passing the time at West Newport’s many retail shops and eateries.
NEWPORT COAST The newest of the city ‘villages’, Newport Coast, was annexed to the City of Newport Beach in 2002. Primarily a residential area, Newport Coast is comprised of a number of gated residential communities. It also has one major commercial retail center and the area hosts the Newport Coast Community Center which serves as the social hub of the community. Attracting high school age children from all over Orange County, Sage Hill School is a major employer in the area.
THANK YOU TO OUR LEADERSHIP CIRCLE MEMBERS The Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce would like to sincerely thank the valuable members of our Leadership Circle. This prestigious collection of organizations is comprised of businesses with a higher level of sponsorship and partnership support of Chamber events and demonstrate a great commitment to the Newport Beach community.
