Edward Lee, Northwestern Mutual By Don Williamson Starting a new business is seldom easy. In the past 100 years there have been few times more challenging than 2008 to enter the marketplace, particularly in the arena of financial planning. Nonetheless, February of 2008 is when Northwestern Mutual, Certified Financial Planner, Edward Lee, first hung his shingle. He survived the slumping financial period and offers this retrospective, “It was rather difficult, but what it taught me was

He leaves us with two rules that he lives by. First, be yourself. Half of the people you meet are not going to like you, so hangout with the half that does. Secondly, have fun, if you are not having fun, what is the point? Calvert Dinner 2017 For the last 21 years, the Y gives out awards to individuals who, over time, have shown exceptional devotion to volunteering and community action. The Ira D. Calvert Distinguished Service Awards are named in memory of “Cal” Calvert to commemorate his outstanding philanthropic accomplishments, to recognize his fine example and to encourage others to serve their community. Cal helped to lead the charge in making sure there was a YMCA built in this area. He and his wife Marsha Calvert were very instrumental in not only helping to get land, a building, an incorporation of the 501(c) (3), raise money, and give their own personal contributions but they both also stayed involved until each of their passing. Their legacies will live on forever at the Corona-Norco Family YMCA. The Y vision started in the late 1960’s and officially incorporated in 1974. It

o looks like a little accountability helps keep me on the straight and narrow when it comes to my eating habits. I am certain that is why so many join weigh in groups! There have been several opportunities for me to order a not so healthy choice at a local restaurant and wondered who was looking. The past two months I have started my day with a healthy breakfast, not my regular coffee with cream. I have noticed a huge difference in my mental clarity (no jokes here) and energy levels! It was pretty easy too. Scramble some eggs, a few nuts and some salsa most mornings. If I’m running out of time or have to get to the office early, I’ll often have a protein drink but always something to get my body moving! And now I come to Christian’s next bit of advice: Movement. Okay, I expected it, he’s the Crossfit Proper Guy so I knew it was coming. Christian said regarding movement, “What’s the number one
culprit of low productivity, you guessed it. Not moving! Whether that’s picking up the phone to call a client or sitting at your desk for 9+ hours at a time, movement is key to success. Set your alarm every hour and stretch, take a brief walk, squats or burpees.” One more step in finding balance in a very busy life – adding movement! Innovation Continues To Shine With CNUSD Corona-Norco Unified School District has once again excelled in being innovative. With the Hybrid School of Innovation (campus is shared with John F. Kennedy Middle College High School), just opened in August. Flexibility in schedules has attracted the students to attend. Offering some 80 ninth-grade students three days a week to study at home and the remaining two days will be on campus, but a later start than traditional High School. The Hybrid combines online and traditional classroom learning. Students have the same academic requirements as those in other Corona-Norco schools but can learn at their own pace. Freshmen will take English, math, biology, physical education, a college preparation course known as AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)
and an elective such as Spanish, robotics or fine arts. Students will show their learning by doing projects that combine subjects such as art, astronomy, math, science and language arts. They will have to check in with a teacher on days they work from home. “Beginning with freshmen, the Hybrid School will eventually expand to include grades 7 through 12; from our initial 80 students to approximately 250. Innovation is part of the schools name, for obvious reasons,” stated Michael Lin, Superintendent of Schools, at the Ribbon Cutting (which the Ribbon Cutting was done on a hybrid white board). “We have a great group of students who have enrolled, they are self-motivated and are involved with technology far beyond the desktop computers. And their
work labs will enable one on one to group discussions. We have ordered futuristic furniture, making this a place that students will want to come and work on projects,” said CNUSD Board of Trustee President Bill Newberry. “Through the CA

On a sales call, many things can go wrong that can scuttle that sale. Why make it harder on yourself if you avoid these three mistakes? In general, good sales people are good communicators and have a systematic process that they can follow and when they foul up, they can unwind the process and discover where they went off track and, hopefully, not make the same mistake again. 1. Never begin your meeting by not asking your prospective client if the time you have both allotted for the meeting is still valid. Instead, ask them at the start of the meeting if the 30 minutes or so that were agreed to is still good. “Mr. Jones, my understanding is that we have set aside the conference room for 30 minutes to focus on the issues you told me about over the phone. Is the time we allowed still available?” Then, ask them how they would like to spend that time on the issues. A sales call is not about you, the seller, it’s about them, the buyer. Proceed to discover why they invited you in their office, home, etc. 2. Never engage in a sales call where you did not get permission from the prospect to ask questions. Good salespeople are like psychologists. Do psychologists ask a lot of questions? The person who asks the most questions wins! The problem with most sales people (and especially trusted advisors, such as: financial planners, consultants, attorneys, etc.) is that they are often too smart for their own good! They are programmed to know all the answers to the problems their prospective clients bring them. They often give way too much information and commit the selling
sin of “Unpaid Consulting” time and time again. Instead ask, “Ms. Smith, in order to understand the issues you are presenting me with, I’m going to need your permission to ask you some questions about how it is affecting you. If I ask you a question that, in any way makes you uncomfortable, will you let me know?” We never do anything on a sales call that the prospect did not give us permission to do. The Sandler Selling System has been described as a “permission-based” method of selling. 3. Never end a meeting without an agreement to move forward or end the call sequence. In other words, let the prospect know that it is OK to agree that not all sales calls end up in a business relationship. Most sales people are OK if they hear from the prospect something like, “give us a little time to think about this and we will get back to you.” Most salespeople hear a “Yes in the future” but our data show that 93% of “Think-It-Overs” are really NOS in disguise. It may sting a little bit the first few times you try it, but gently say to the prospect, “Mr. Nelson. It may not be the case here, but it sounds like you are just trying to be nice to me. The last 5 people who told me the same thing you are telling me never became clients or returned my call. It really is OK to tell me no. Can you please do that?” The best way to set up the outcome and the ending of the call is to do it in the beginning. Communicate upfront that you are OK with a NO and you may just be surprised at how many YESES will come to you. The Corona-Norco Unified School District partnered with the Corona Chamber of Commerce and Norco College for a Career Technical Education (CTE) Expo at Norco College. The event will take place Saturday, October 28, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Career Technical Education Expo provides parents and students an inside look at the different programs offered at the Corona-Norco Unified School District. At the expo, students can learn about various CTE high school pathways, meet local business and industry professionals and gain an insight for future job opportunities. CNUSD incorporates industry based equipment and technology in the CTE programs. In addition to agricultural education, STEM academies, and media production, CNUSD is creating programs in manufacturing,
engineering, medical sciences, and supply chain technology. Students are now coming out of high school with more skills and experience than ever before. Learn how to gain college credit in high school under the guidance of teachers who can prepare students for the future, today.
