Malalag’s famous ‘bangkarera’ returns BY MATT NAVAREZ

MALALAG, Davao del Sur-- The famous boat race called “Bangkarera” has hit the seas of Malalag once more! As seen on SKMF Media Team’s live report on May 26, 2024, the boats looked like colorful fishes swimming in the clear waters of the municipality when it commenced. Among the participants were Joel Baldomero’s group.

“Three times na rin po akong nanalo,” said Baldomero, whose job is to make the machines and the boat itself. He is also joined by Warren Dee Baldomero, who’s in charge of running the craft. Apart from being skilled seamen, Filipinos are also known for their ability to create good quality boats. In fact, the first wooden boat called “balanghai” in Southeast Asia was found in the Philippines. The event was led by MSFP Officer Romy Madrio. Together with his team,

three categories were competed for a chance to win big prizes and trophies. “Bangkarera is already a tradition in Malalag where it is held annually in lined with Sagawak festival. This is to give importance and significance to our fishermen whose main livelihood is fishing,” said Madrio. The event was held in Malalag Bay Port and was attended by more than 700 hundred spectators. “There will be more of this in the future,” concluded Madrio.

MALALAG, Davao del Sur--The Search for Master Fisherman 2024 event was a resounding success last May 25, 2024 at Malalag Fishport. This gripping competition brought together the best and finest fishermen from Malalag showcasing their skills and celebrating our rich fishing ground and traditions. The event began early in the morning with enthusiastic participants ready to demonstrate their expertise. As lines were cast, the competition was fierce, with each contestant striving to catch the most impressive haul. Spectators gathered along the waterfront, cheering on their favorite fishermen and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere. Throughout the day, attendees were treated to a variety of activities, including traditional fishing demonstrations, Panginhas Sagawak or Shell picking contest, a sustainable fishing practices. Local vendors offered fresh catches and artisanal products, adding to the festive spirit of the event. The highlight of the day was the awarding ceremony, where the title of Master Fisherman was bestowed upon the most skilled and successful participant. Robert Henon of Brgy. Baybay won first place in Sintak Sagawak master fisherman while Ms. Elvie Callinero clinched first place in Panginhas Sagawak The non-winners also received consolation prizes and other tokens from the organizing committees. The event wouldn’t be possible without the undying support of our very own Mayor Peter Val-Tan Valentin , Vice Mayor Ervin Emphasis, Hon. Rodolfo Aringo Jr., Hon. Francisco Valentin Jr., MAO -Demosthenes Gomez , Guardians Brotherhood Malalag, MDDRMO, Coast Guard Sub-Station Malalag ,PNP Malalag, PNP Maritime, Bantay Dagat, LGU staff/facilitators and to all the participants, sponsors, and spectators who made this event a tremendous success. Malalag is a rich breeding ground for Bangus and other consumable fishes. With the activity, it honors the hardwork of every fisherman with fishing as the main source of their livelihood.
