It was a moment that could have been terrifying. A vacant house. A staged photograph of a little girl. Joan Pallone’s high school son Vinny, staring wide-eyed, whispering into the phone, “Mom… I don’t know who these weirdos are, but they have a picture of our little Stella. You need to fire them right away.” He was freaked out, convinced something was terribly wrong!
But if you know Joan Pallone, you know moments like this are exactly the kind of challenge she thrives on. She built her career from the ground up, determined to make it. It’s no wonder that she is one of Colorado’s most respected real estate agents. (And in case you’re wondering, her daughter-in-law staged the house with Stella’s photo.) Staging was a new concept!
Born in Omaha, Nebraska, one of ten kids with seven girls and three boys, Joan learned early how to advocate and stand her ground. “We were raised to believe in ourselves and that anything was possible through hard work and persistence.”
Joan’s parents started their own engineering business when she was just 10. It left an impression on her.
“Every night, they would talk, I would learn so much about what it really means to be in business. It’s always about customer service, caring, and taking the high road. Making sure that you are communicating in a way they feel comfortable.”

After meeting her husband, they lived in Omaha for 6 years before moving to Colorado. Her husband was the dean of a high school, but money was tight. When an opportunity in transportation in Colorado was presented in 1979, he and Joan were all in. They came to Colorado with a 3-yearold, a 22-month-old, and a 2-week-
old baby. Then they had two more children here in Colorado.
When the trucking industry was deregulated, 50 trucking lines went under. “They went down to two,” recalls Joan of the harrowing experience. She knew her husband was meant to be working with children. “He

grew up in the housing projects in New York and was meant to be a teacher and a coach.” The only problem? Joan would need to go back to work. “I kept thinking, ‘What would be an avenue where I could make a difference in our lives?” After lots of prayers, she got an answer.
“Real estate.”
She took action, attending real estate school and earning her license 35 years ago. She worked tirelessly and has always been passionate about homeownership.
“I became a homeowner at the age of 21, right after we got married,” she says. “My parents were always big believers that homeownership empowered your life. I have carried that forward. It has been an absolute privilege to make a difference in people’s lives, especially people who thought they couldn’t buy homes.”
To Joan at Pallone & Associates, real estate is about helping people. “That’s one of the great benefits,” she says. “I look at this job as an opportunity.” Looking over her career, she has nothing but gratitude. “I’m extremely blessed and humbled by the trust that people have put in me.” She says with conviction. She’s also grateful to Vinny, her youngest son, for helping her.
“I couldn’t have a day off without relying on him,” she smiles. Although they don’t work as a team, they do function as a team. “We help each other continually, running everything past each other to make sure that we are making the right decisions. I’m very happy to have him with me in real estate.”
When asked about the secrets to success, Joan knows it comes down to communication. “You have to make sure clients know what is going on,” she candidly comments. “And be transparent. Don’t be afraid to tell them bad news. This is their biggest investment of their entire life.”
Giving back is important to Joan, dating back to her childhood. “My parents instilled in us the importance of giving back to the community,” she says.
Since moving to Broomfield in 1979, she’s given generously of her time and resources by supporting Bal Swan Children’s Center, Broomfield High School, Broomfield Senior Resources, Knights of Columbus, and Broomfield FISH, the local food bank.
“My booster banner has been on the Broomfield High fence for over 40 years,” she laughs.
“Al taught and coached there. Our children went there. Our grandchildren go there. This community has given us so much and I just want to give back.”
Now, life is full. “I only work 40 hours a week,” Joan jokes. “I feel like I’m retired.” With 15 grandchildren, ages 6 to 26, she’s surrounded by love. “Three of our five kids live within half a mile from us. We have one daughter in New York with three kids, and a son in Montana with four.”
Joan loves traveling and cooking, especially Italian dishes. “I married an Italian from New York, so my mother-in-law had to teach me how to cook Italian!” “Now I love making meatballs, red sauce, toasted ravioli, and many other family favorites.”
As for retirement, Joan says she’ll hang up her keys one day, knowing the business is in good hands. “Vinny’s been in training since he was a kid,” she says proudly. “He’s now an accomplished REALTOR®, husband, and father of three. When I do retire, I hope people will continue to work with him.”
After 54 years of marriage, Al still lends a helping hand. Whether putting up a sign or picking up a check, he does it. “He’s been my rock through it all.”
Joan’s life is about fearlessness and faith. “I saw a meme once that said, ‘We don’t do real estate because it’s easy. We do it because we thought it would be easy,’” she laughs. “I never thought it would be easy, but I’ve loved every minute of it. To find your calling and live it every single day is a blessing beyond words.”
