A brief history
AnneandJoeWebsterfirstestablisheda market garden in 1987 growing cut flowersandbeddingplantsforlocalshops andgardencentres.Itwasin2000that AshbrookNurserywasbornasoperations moved from their back garden to the current premises as Joe’s brother Francis joinedthebusiness.
AnneandFrancissoonbecamefamiliarfacesattheAngusFarmers’Marketsandin2005 Ashbrookopenedasagardencentrewelcomingmembersofthepublic.Intheyears following,thegardencentrehascontinuedtoevolvewiththeopeningofacaféin2020 andapurpose-builtshopin2024whichhasallowedforagreaterrangeofproducts,such asbooks,giftsandhomeware..Francissadlypassedawayin2020,butsincethen,Anne andJoe’sthreechildrenhaveallbecomefirmlyinvolvedinthebusinessasAshbrook lookstowardsthefuture.

WhatsetsAshbrookapartfrommanyothermoderngarden centresisthatplantsarestillthepriority.Thebusinessstarted lifeasanurseryandgrowingourownplantscontinuestobea keypartofouridentity.Ouraimistoalwaysstockagood selectionofvarietiesacrossthewholerangeofgardenplants, andwithover2000grownonsiteweareabletodoso. By growingourownplantswecanhavebetterqualitycontroland knowthattheywillthrivewhenplantedinyourgarden.
Growingourownalsomeansthatwecanclaimtohavea muchlower'carbonfootprint'thanmostgardencentres.One articulatedlorrydeliverycarryingcompost,seeds&plugplants, pots&traysallowsustoproduceplantsthatwouldtakeatleast tenlorriestodelivertousfullygrown.Wealsogrowourplants 'hard',withminimalheat,therebysavingmoreenergyand producinghardyplantsthatarewellabletowithstandthe rigoursoftheScottishclimateonceplantedinyourgarden.

Inourcafé,wehaveembeddedthesameprinciplesaswe haveinourgardencentrewithafocusonquality. Almostallthecookingandbakingisdonein-house using freshingredientsfromlocalsuppliers. Asan independentbusinessweknowjusthowimportantour localcustomersare,soacrossallaspectsofourbusiness, weaimtosourcelocallywhereverpossible.

Gardeningisanotjustahobby.Studieshaveproventhatitcansignificantlyimprove bothphysicalandmentalwellbeing.Beingoutdoors,inthefreshair,andintouchwith naturecanhelpreducestress,anxietyandimproveyourmood. Gardeningoffersafull bodyworkoutthataidsstrength,balance,andflexibility.Itcanbesociable,and incrediblysatisfying–thereisnothingquiteliketastingyourhomegrownveggiesor watchingyourfavouriteplantsstarttobloom.Beingabletowork,enjoyorrelaxina spacethatyouhavenurturedisveryrewarding.Therapeuticgardeningisbeing increasinglyprescribedbydoctorsasameanstohelppeoplecopewithbothphysical andmentalhealthissues.
AtAshbrook,webelieveinengagingwith andsupportingthelocalcommunity.We helpcommunitygardeninggroupswhen wecan,andhostvisitsforlocalschooland college students. We hold various workshops every year to encourage the publictogetinvolvedandlearnalittlebit moreaboutgardening.Eventssuchasour Halloweenfundayareorganisedtoraise fundsforlocalcharities.
