Poppy Maestro collage and mixed media
80cm x 60cm
Collage is built on wonder. Collage artists by their nature find wonder in things. This is why they remove weathered posters from walls at night and gather discarded images from old magazines and forgotten books – magpies of the mysterious. A collage artist fizzes with excitement when they see what will become central to a new work. With Colin Brown it is always something that resonates with him, reflecting the joys and icons of our world. It could be a Redoute botanical drawing of a pink poppy (Poppy Maestro opposite,) birds and butterflies, prints from Edo Japan or images of a jazz or sporting great. These are things that celebrate life.
With almost forty years as a professional collage artist, Colin Brown has carved a unique place in Scottish art. Each painting sings. Every composition is charged with an energy that blends hi-brow and popular culture - placing one foot in Pop Art and the other in the now, celebrating our world and beyond.

On August 1st I moved into my new studio close to Stonehaven harbour - and began an intensive period of work. Over the following four months nine new paintings were produced to go along with three created earlier in the year. These twelve paintings form this exhibition of new work - titled Universal Wonder.
As a continuation of my work over the past thirty-eight years these new paintings celebrate the positive spirit of contemporary society and my ongoing joy of finding and using collage elements as a fundamental part of my art.
