For the last few years, Ann Oram has painted mostly still life and garden-life paintings. This collection, a Sence of Place, marks a move back to a discipline Oram knows well - travel painting.Wonders happen when you combine incredible architecture, memorable place and sense-felt seasons with arguably Scotland’s best Neocolourist.
‘Over the past two years I have been revisiting Italy: Lucca andVenice in Particular, going back to places I first saw as an art student. I went to Lucca in May 2024 when the city was bursting with trees in full, bright green leaf.Walking the city was a joy.This time I was drawn to the churches and cathedrals with their hard-to-draw white marble facades.
Venice was a January trip.On my first day I took a boat out to one of the islands to see the mosaics of a Basilica. Mid-visit,Tony called, and we ended up discussing showing this small group of Italian paintings. I was drawn back to place. January gave a mix of freezing, misty days and bright, crisp blue-sky ones.The marble facades were glowed, the colours were intense and the water added its own magic.’
