A parent’s guide to choosing children’s earrings they’ll love to wear.

Choosing earrings for your child is about more than what looks pretty. The right details matter — for comfort, safety and happy, confident little wearers.

1. START WITH SIZE

Children’s earrings aren’t one-size-fits-all. A beautifully proportioned stud should sit comfortably on the lobe without overwhelming it or extending beyond its edge. Smaller fronts are generally better suited to little ears, while older children often have room for larger, more detailed designs. As a guide, around 3–5mm is a useful starting point for babies and toddlers, with approximately 5–7mm suiting many younger children and larger designs often working beautifully as ears grow. lmost every detail at Shapland Swim School has been shaped by one simple question: what helps children learn best? From classes capped at just three children and purpose-built multi-depth pools to focused 20-minute lessons and warm 32°C magnesium mineral water, the Shapland approach looks different from the traditional learn-to-swim model — and that is entirely intentional. At the centre of that approach is Chris Shapland, the third generation of his family to help shape the Shapland method. The family’s involvement in swimming education began in 1938 with Chris’s grandfather, while his father later opened the first boutique Shapland Swim School in 1973. Chris took over the family business in 1980 and has spent the decades since refining and developing the program, drawing on hands-on experience and a deep understanding of how children learn in the water. It is an approach that’s had more than eight decades to be observed, tested, refined and perfected. Today, across 16 schools in Queensland, that same philosophy still underpins every lesson. Talk to Chris and it quickly becomes clear that the class sizes, pool design, lesson length and even the water itself are not simply features designed to make Shapland different. Each has evolved with purpose, shaped by generations of watching how children learn, where they struggle and what helps them build genuine confidence in the water.

BUILT ON DECADES, NOT TRENDS

“I think the length of time we’ve been in the industry gives us a huge advantage because we’ve had decades to think it through and to simplify,” Chris says. “It’s got to be simple. Anything really complicated just inhibits your creativity as a teacher.” That philosophy underpins almost every decision at Shapland. Rather than adopting the “station teaching” model used by many larger swim schools — where an instructor stays in one spot and works through a fixed script of skills with a group — Shapland trains its teachers in a flexible system that can be adapted to the child in front of them. “All children learn differently,” Chris explains. “For some children words work better; for others examples work better. We don’t restrict instructors with standing in one spot with predetermined words and phrases. SMALL CLASS SIZE MATTERS

Perhaps the most obvious way Shapland sets itself apart is class size. Every lesson is capped at a maximum of three children — a number arrived at not by accident, but by years of testing what actually gives children the best combination of individual attention, active swimming time and the social benefit of learning alongside peers. “Our class sizes are a maximum of three, which is extremely important for children to really get that individualised teaching; there’s no waiting around for children to take turns,” Chris says.

With just two or three classes running at any one time, the pool is always a quiet, lowstimulation environment. Chris believes this matters far more than people often realise, particularly for children who are anxious, easily distracted or simply overwhelmed by the noise of a typical aquatic centre.

POOLS DESIGNED TO TEACH

The pools themselves are engineered as teaching tools, not just containers for water. Rather than a single shallow end and a single deep end, Shapland’s purpose-built pools feature multiple depths — sometimes eight or more — allowing a teacher to work with a child at precisely the depth that suits their height, confidence and skill level. “We have one of the very rare specialised teaching pools in the industry,” Chris says. “These gradual depths allow for progressive learning in a moderated way where children can gain confidence. We can introduce a child by increments of up to 50mm if necessary.” The water is kept at a warm 32°C year-round and uses magnesium mineral water, chosen for being gentler on children’s eyes, skin and hair than standard chlorinated pools. It’s a small detail with an outsized effect: a child who isn’t cold, itchy or uncomfortable is a child who can actually concentrate on learning. S P R I N G 2026

TWENTY MINUTES, FULLY FOCUSED

Shapland’s lessons run for a tightly defined 20 minutes — shorter than many programs and, again, the product of years of observation rather than convenience. Chris and his teachers found that after roughly 20 minutes, children’s concentration reliably begins to drop off. Combined with the small class sizes, which mean far less time spent waiting for a turn, that window is enough for a genuinely productive, engaging lesson without pushing children past the point of real focus.

LEARNING TO SWIM WITHOUT GOGGLES

Water safety runs through everything Shapland teaches, and one principle in particular that sits at the heart of the program is that children should be able to swim without goggles. “We want children to know the sensation of swimming without goggles in the event they were to fall into water without goggles on,” Chris says. In an accidental fall, a child is very unlikely to be wearing goggles, so Shapland’s teachers work to ensure children are genuinely comfortable getting water on their faces, opening their eyes underwater, orienting themselves and using their swimming and water safety skills without relying on equipment they may not have on hand. That approach reflects Chris’s broader view of what “learning to swim” actually means. A child who can fall in, turn around and paddle back to the side of a familiar pool isn’t necessarily safe in the water more broadly. “Your child may get caught in a current, there might not be a side to reach for, or they may not have the skills to swim to safety,” he says. His benchmark for genuine water competence is considerably higher than the national standard: around 400 metres, or eight laps of a 50-metre pool, by the time a child reaches their early teens.

A PROGRAM THAT’S NEVER FINISHED

That’s also why Shapland treats swimming as a skill in constant development rather than a box to be ticked. The program moves children from the baby and toddler stages through preschool, school-age and advanced levels, continually adding new strokes, techniques and safety challenges as confidence grows. “As children move into different aquatic environments, they need different skills to match the environment,” Chris says. “Learning to swim isn’t a task to tick off. Constant skill development and adaptation are required. Our children never ‘finish’ swimming… there is always more to learn.” And with spring marking the beginning of the warmer months, it’s also a timely reminder that water confidence is built well before summer arrives. Consistent lessons give children the time to develop their skills gradually, helping them head into the summer months with greater confidence and ability in the water.

GROWING WITHOUT CHANGING THE FORMULA

The opening of the Redbank Plains school in August 2026 brings Shapland to 16 centres across Southeast Queensland, but Chris is adamant that scale hasn’t diluted the model.

The new school was built around the same fundamentals as every other: classes of three, a quiet learning environment, a purposebuilt multi-depth pool and warm magnesium mineral water. None of these features exists in isolation. As Chris sees it, the small classes, the quiet pools, the varying depths, the shorter lessons and the mineral water have all evolved together, out of the same decades-long process of watching what genuinely helps children feel comfortable, stay focused and build real confidence in the water. sk any parent what they want from their child’s education and the answer rarely changes: confidence, curiosity, a kid who comes home wanting to talk about what they learned rather than dreading going back. Ask them how easy that is to find, and the answer changes just as reliably — not very. Somewhere between rising academic pressure and childhood’s natural instinct to play, many good intentions can get lost. Twinkle Academy was built on the belief that they don’t have to be. Founded in Sorrento and now expanding with a second centre in Robina, the academy has spent its short life arguing that rigour and warmth aren’t opposing forces — they’re the same idea, approached from two directions. Children learn best, the founders say, when they feel genuinely seen. Everything else follows from that.

TWO FOUNDERS, ONE SHARED INSTINCT

At the heart of Twinkle Academy’s success are its founders, Bryant Tan and Melody Zhu, whose complementary backgrounds create a uniquely rich educational framework. to the early literacy, numeracy, and emotional groundwork that makes the first day of Prep feel like a step forward rather than a shock. Primary-aged students join smallgroup sessions mapped to the Australian Curriculum, with literacy instruction built on the Science of Reading rather than the rotelearning habits many parents remember from their own schooling — phonemic awareness, phonics, and decoding done properly, in sequence, before fluency and comprehension are asked to carry any weight. Mathematics follows a similar logic: less memorisation, more reasoning, so that classroom concepts actually stick rather than being crammed for a test and forgotten by Friday. By high school, the focus shifts again. Years 7 to 10 bring subject specialists who work on the skills senior secondary school S P R I N G 2026

will demand without warning — analytical essay writing, algebraic reasoning, exam technique and the less glamorous but arguably more useful skill of managing time under pressure. The goal, as the founders put it, is turning exam anxiety into something closer to calm.

MEETING NEURODIVERGENT LEARNERS WHERE THEY ARE

Woven through every stage of that pathway is a deliberate focus on neurodivergent children — those navigating dyslexia, ADHD, or sensory processing differences, who often find that a fast-paced classroom simply isn’t built for how they think. Bryant and Melody are firm on one point: a child who struggles in a conventional setting isn’t lacking ability. They’re usually lacking the right pace or an entry point that isn’t purely verbal or purely visual. “The starting point for us is recognising that every child absorbs information uniquely,” Melody says. “For children who need extra support, we look closely at their individual strengths, challenges, and emotional triggers. We use structured, explicit teaching, break larger tasks down into bite-sized steps, and offer consistent positive reinforcement.” Small class sizes make that approach practical rather than aspirational — there’s room to slow down for one child without the rest of the group losing momentum. Over time, the founders say, this is where the real shift happens: not a sudden leap in test scores, but a quiet change in how a child talks about themselves, from “I can’t do this” to “I know how I learn.”

THE NEXT CHAPTER: ROBINA

Twinkle Academy’s original centre in Sorrento built the model; a new site in Robina is where the academy is now testing its scale. The move follows sustained demand from families further south on the Gold Coast, and Robina — ringed by schools, parks, and young families — was, in the founders’ words, the natural next step. “Opening in Robina is such an exciting milestone for our team,” Bryant says. “Our goal has always been to build longterm relationships with families. We want the Robina centre to be a welcoming environment where parents feel genuinely supported, and children look forward to visiting every week.”

A short bushwalk from the park leads into Tamborine National Park and Cedar Creek Falls, one of the mountain’s most photographed lookouts over the open canyon.

Adventure works up an appetite, and Tamborine Mountain Glades has it covered at both ends of the day. The program invites students to spend a day analysing the mechanics of their favourite attractions before testing them out firsthand. By framing education through the lens of amusement park entertainment, the initiative fosters critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills in an environment where kids are already highly engaged. Aussie World Head of Sales and Marketing, Sebastian Hahn, said the excursions would focus on practical exploration of scientific concepts through real-world applications found throughout the theme park. “Aussie World’s UNREAL Excursions will ignite curiosity and excitement in students by offering a hands-on adventure in learning that’s unlike anything else on the Sunshine Coast,” Sebastian explained. “By exploring real-world science concepts through the thrills of amusement park rides, students will gain a practical understanding of forces, motion and energy that brings classroom learning to life,” he added.

The program features five distinct, multidisciplinary lessons tailored to different aspects of the school curriculum. Rather than passively observing, students actively collect data, map environments, and decode the inner workings of the park. • Forces in Action (The Physics of Rides): An action-packed look at the invisible forces that dictate a roller coaster’s path. Students investigate gravity, motion, circular forces, and collisions to see how energy transfers in real-world scenarios. • Design a Thrill Ride (Engineering at Aussie World): Young creators tap into their innovative side, analysing how structures function, how safety features are integrated, and how specific materials are chosen to withstand intense physical stress.

• Light, Shadows and Illusions (Seeing is Not Believing): A fascinating dive into the behaviour of light. Kids study how mirrors work, how shadows shift, and how optical illusions can easily trick the human brain. • Theme Park Detectives (Measuring, Mapping and Data): Putting mathematics to work in a practical environment. Students gather and organise real-time data — including ride wait times and usage statistics — to create graphs and map out operational trends. • How Theme Parks Work (Systems and Sustainability): A big-picture look at how modern parks operate as interconnected systems. This lesson explores energy efficiency, eco-friendly resource management, and the technology required to keep visitors safe and happy.

Introducing children to hands-on STEM programs from an early age builds essential foundational skills that support long-term academic growth. This light yet satisfying salmon curry is packed with omega-3s to boost family energy levels, making it the perfect vibrant dinner for busy weeknights.

CREAMY BUTTER

Salmon Curry METHOD 1. Place the salmon cubes in a bowl and toss with lemon juice, salt, and turmeric. Set aside for 10–15 minutes while you prepare the sauce. 2. Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat with a drizzle of oil. Cook the salmon for 1 minute on each side until lightly golden but still undercooked in the centre. Remove and set aside. 3. Reduce heat to medium and add ghee and olive oil. Add onion and cook for 6–8 minutes until soft and golden. Stir in the garlic and ginger, then cook for 1 minute, until fragrant. Add garam masala, cumin, coriander, paprika, and chilli powder. Toast for 30 seconds. Stir in tomato paste and cook for 1 minute. Add crushed tomatoes and simmer for 8–10 minutes until slightly reduced.

INGREDIENTS TO SERVE • Steamed basmati rice • Warm naan bread • Extra coriander • Greek yoghurt SALMON • 800g Tassal Fresh Tassie Salmon Skin On Fillets, cut into large cubes • 1 tbsp lemon juice • 1 tsp sea salt • 1 tsp ground turmeric

4. Lower the heat and stir in cream, yoghurt, honey, salt, and lemon juice. Simmer gently for 3–4 minutes until smooth and velvety. 5. Return the salmon to the pan along with any resting juices. Cook gently for 3–4 minutes until the salmon is just cooked through. Stir in the butter and coriander. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
