Here is how to map out a bookish day trip through three of our prettiest Hinterland towns.

Tucked away in the heart of town, Maleny Library is an irresistibly cosy branch with a magical secret right out back. Behind the building, a timber boardwalk weaves alongside the tranquil waters of Obi Obi Creek. After choosing a stack of picture books, take a quiet walk along the creek bank — if you move softly and look closely into the pools, you might even spot a wild platypus splashing in the shallows. • Make a day of it: Pack a picnic and head five minutes down the road to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, where sweeping views of the Glass House Mountains meet ancient subtropical rainforest. Located on the main street, it provides a peaceful oasis to explore before grabbing a treat from the famous Kenilworth Bakery. • Make a day of it: Take your freshly borrowed books across the road to Isaac Moore Park. Here, you will find a dedicated Story Seat — a brightly painted, oversized park bench designed specifically to encourage families to sit, play and read together outdoors. Setting the stage for Prep at Mountain Creek From their very first PrePrep Play Date to their first day in the classroom, this Sunshine Coast primary school gives young learners a warm, confident start to their schooling journey.

ountain Creek State School (MCSS) is gearing up to welcome its newest cohort, with children starting Prep in 2027 invited to a series of Pre-Prep Play Dates. It’s the first taste of a school ethos captured neatly in its motto, “Caring, Sharing and Learning Together” — one that shapes everything from the classroom to the playground. “Our Pre-Prep Play Dates are designed to nurture children’s natural curiosity while helping them feel safe, connected and excited about beginning their school journey,” says acting principal Paul Little. “They also give families the chance to become familiar with Mountain Creek and connect with our wider school community.”

Held weekly, the sessions mix stories, songs, craft and play-based games designed to build early literacy, numeracy and fine motor skills — alongside something less measurable but just as important: a sense of belonging, before a single lesson has begun. That same spirit carries through the rest of school life. One program that captures it well is the Wearable Art Extension Program. Students design and construct garments made entirely from recycled materials, then parade them on the runway at a whole-school gala. It’s part fashion show, part engineering problem, part creativity — and it’s become something of a signature for MCSS. Proof that sustainability lessons stick better when they come with sequins. The school’s approach to reading is quieter but just as deliberate. Support-a-Reader has been running for 26 years, pairing younger students with community volunteers for oneon-one sessions most school days. Outside class, students can join Chess Club or Puzzle Club — part of the Interschool Puzzle Clubs network, with MCSS recently hosting the state championships and fielding a team at the National Titles. For the sportier Creekers, coach-led AFL, football and Oz Tag teams round out the offering. Underpinning it all is a deliberate focus on the emotional side of learning. The school runs Zones of Regulation across every year level, giving students a working vocabulary for how they feel and what to do about it. “Our whole-school approach is about equipping children with the language to express their emotions and the strategies to selfregulate,” says Little. “When children have the skills to understand and manage their feelings, they’re more engaged in learning, they build stronger relationships, and develop resilience for life’s challenges.”

Between the runway shows, the chess boards and a warm welcome into Prep, there’s a clear thread: MCSS believes that kids who feel secure are kids who thrive — and that belief starts on day one.

From volcanic peaks and rainforest walks to charming villages and family-friendly attractions, there’s plenty of fun to be found in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. HINTERLAND SPECIAL

ook west across the Sunshine Coast and the landscape quickly changes, rising from the coastline towards the dramatic volcanic peaks, rolling green hills and rainforest of the Hinterland. Getting to the Hinterland is easy, with many of its towns and attractions just 30 minutes by car from the beach. A great way to navigate the Hinterland is via the Blackall Range Tourist Drive, which is only 55km long but packed with interesting diversions. Start at Nambour for a very good reason: this is the home of the legendary Big Pineapple. It was one of Queensland’s most popular attractions back in the 1970s and 80s, even attracting royalty, including Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Times have changed, but fortunately the Big Pineapple has recently been upgraded, making the experience — including the famous Pineapple Train — just as relevant for today’s children.

If you have time, spend a few hours at the adjoining TreeTop Challenge adventure park, which spans 4 hectares of rainforest with 120 challenges and 12 ziplines, suitable for ages four and above. There’s also Wildlife HQ, a compact zoo and wildlife sanctuary home to over 200 native and exotic animals. It features interactive animal encounters, a tropical rainforest setting, and native Australian species alongside global wildlife. A short diversion from the Big Pineapple is Amaze World, a classic maze adventure that will both entertain and wear out energetic kids. In Nambour, there’s another zoo: Hologram Zoo Sunshine Coast brings 3D animals to life in a fun and educational way. It’s now time to turn the children’s attention to the natural attractions, which is easy as you climb the escarpment to the first of the Hinterland’s three M’s — Mapleton. The first port of call should be Mapleton Falls, as it offers a thunderous view after rain and is easily reached from the car park. If you’ve worked up an appetite, call into Mapleton Public House for lunch and grab a table on the veranda to take in the views across the Hinterland to the coast.

The other two M’s — Montville and Maleny — are definitely ‘must-stop’ destinations along the way, both for educational purposes, such as a visit to Maleny Cheese, or for naughty but nice shopping at Willy Wonka-style shops such as Chocolate Country. After the sugar hit, explore some of the 55 hectares of subtropical rainforest at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve before ending the afternoon at the stunning Maleny Botanic Gardens & Bird World, which features an enchanting permanent fairy garden complete with mushroom houses, a treehouse, and a full-size boat. With so much to see and do, it’s worth considering a stay along the Blackall Range. A parent’s guide to choosing children’s earrings they’ll love to wear.

Choosing earrings for your child is about more than what looks pretty. The right details matter — for comfort, safety and happy, confident little wearers.

1. START WITH SIZE

Children’s earrings aren’t one-size-fits-all. A beautifully proportioned stud should sit comfortably on the lobe without overwhelming it or extending beyond its edge. Smaller fronts are generally better suited to little ears, while older children often have room for larger, more detailed designs. As a guide, around 3–5mm is a useful starting point for babies and toddlers, with approximately 5–7mm suiting many younger children and larger designs often working beautifully as ears grow. These are guides rather than rules — every child’s ears and styling preferences are different. Tip: When in doubt, smaller is more comfortable and less likely to catch on hair or clothing.

2. THINK ABOUT THE BACKING

The backing is just as important as the front! Screw back earrings are our top choice for babies and young children because they are secure, comfortable and designed with little ones in mind. Screw backs cover the end of the post, so there’s no sharp tip pressing into the skin. This light yet satisfying salmon curry is packed with omega-3s to boost family energy levels, making it the perfect vibrant dinner for busy weeknights.

CREAMY BUTTER

Salmon Curry METHOD 1. Place the salmon cubes in a bowl and toss with lemon juice, salt, and turmeric. Set aside for 10–15 minutes while you prepare the sauce. 2. Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat with a drizzle of oil. Cook the salmon for 1 minute on each side until lightly golden but still undercooked in the centre. Remove and set aside. 3. Reduce heat to medium and add ghee and olive oil. Add onion and cook for 6–8 minutes until soft and golden. Stir in the garlic and ginger, then cook for 1 minute, until fragrant. Add garam masala, cumin, coriander, paprika, and chilli powder. Toast for 30 seconds. Stir in tomato paste and cook for 1 minute. Add crushed tomatoes and simmer for 8–10 minutes until slightly reduced.

Celebrity Chef and Tassal Ambassador Guy Turland has put a unique twist on a family favourite with his Butter Salmon Curry, disguising Tassie salmon and a sneaky serving of veggies into a dish the kids will ask for seconds of! INGREDIENTS TO SERVE • Steamed basmati rice • Warm naan bread • Extra coriander • Greek yoghurt SALMON • 800g Tassal Fresh Tassie Salmon Skin On Fillets, cut into large cubes • 1 tbsp lemon juice • 1 tsp sea salt • 1 tsp ground turmeric

4. Lower the heat and stir in cream, yoghurt, honey, salt, and lemon juice. Simmer gently for 3–4 minutes until smooth and velvety. 5. Return the salmon to the pan along with any resting juices. Cook gently for 3–4 minutes until the salmon is just cooked through. Stir in the butter and coriander. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
