A Heartfelt Thank You
The vision of KIDS Center began in 1990 when a core group of individuals including the District Attorney’s Office, members of the Bend Rotary Club and other concerned citizens came together to develop early concepts and planning to bring a child advocacy center to Central Oregon. In 1994, the 1,500 sq. foot building was built with $50,000 and far more in volunteer labor and supplies from community members.
KIDS Center officially opened in 1994 providing medical evaluations, child-friendly forensic interviews and therapy to 130 children in the first year. Since then, KIDS Center has served more than 10,000 children from Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson Counties and Warm Springs. Additionally, KIDS Center has been dedicated to preventing child abuse in Central Oregon through community trainings, such as Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children, Internet Safety and Let’s Talk About It, which help teach adults to recognize, report and prevent child abuse.

The second service extends trauma-based therapy
services to non-offending parents/caregivers to reduce their own secondary trauma from their child’s abuse and help them be better equipped to support their child’s healing and long-term success. Parents fill a critical role in both the prevention of child abuse, as well as the healing of their child who has been abused. Often, parents face a complex array of emotional challenges that prevent them from responding effectively to the incidence of their child’s abuse. Without strong and effective parental support during this traumatic time, a child’s healing is often compromised. This pilot project will provide tools (therapy, education and training) to parents of abused children that are essential to help their child and family heal from the abuse, and overcome the life-long and significant impacts and costs that affect abuse victims over the course of their lives.

As we look to the future, we have identified to opportunities that I believe will allow KIDS Center to have even greater impact on improving the lives of children and families dealing with abuse. The first service headed by the District Attorney’s office, in partnership with KIDS Center,Law Enforcement, DHS Child Welfare and Saving Grace will identify and provide a child-friendly forensic interview within 24 hours for children who have witnessed domestic violence in their home.

encourages one to stop and reflect on accomplishments made, obstacles faced and overcome, missed opportunities and dreams not yet realized. As I contemplated KIDS Center’s fast approaching 20 Year Anniversary, I found myself doing the same thing. I spoke with founding board members and friends, many of whom now serve on our Advisory Councils. I challenged KIDS Center staff to think about how far we have come and where we want/need to grow. What became very clear to me through these thoughtful conversations is that over the years KIDS Center has become very good at educating our community partners about child abuse so that they can readily identify children at risk. We have built a team of compassionate experts who provide accurate and timely child abuse evaluations daily that support the investigation efforts of Law Enforcement and DHS Child Welfare. Through our partnership with Deschutes County Mental Health we are able to provide therapy for children that is age appropriate and unique to each individual child to help them process, heal from and overcome their abuse. Our community prevention program trains more 1,000 adults every year in how to better keep our kids safe. I could not be more proud of the work we do, the accomplishments we have made, the relationships we hold dear and the number of lives we have changed.
