When it comes to preventing child abuse, KIDS Center is an equal opportunity training partner. In 2018 we wrapped up our third year as a partner site and grant recipient of The Ford Family Foundation’s Protect Our Children initiative. In these three years over 3,200 individuals became equipped to protect children from abuse by attending Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children® training hosted by KIDS Center. While this is a tremendous success for Central Oregon, we noticed a significant gap in who wasn’t taking the trainings: MEN! 77% of attendees were women. Although this will positively impact our entire population, we are missing a critical opportunity to foster a community where men are equally involved and invested in protecting children. How can we shift this social and cultural norm? To better understand possible reasons for low male attendance, I reached out to someone who understands men and the struggle of engaging that population: a man. Scott Eastman, Executive Director of the Siskiyou Family YMCA and fellow partner in the Protect Our Children initiative, has been a champion in calling men to action in child sexual abuse prevention. From the outset, Eastman quickly became aware of the unfortunate reality that, nationally, 80% of those receiving the Stewards of Children® training were female. Scott stated he knew that, “without men being actively engaged with women on this front, it becomes a gender specific movement and you cannot capitalize on any movement that way .”

When asked what a typical response from men was when they were asked to attend a child sexual abuse prevention training, Eastman had a very straightforward answer: “They run.” With a determination to change this in his community, Eastman sat down and made a list of every man he knew personally in Siskiyou County. He wrote down 150 names. He sat down with each individual and used the proverbial “friend card” to engage them. It worked! What started as conversations over coffee grew to small groups of men becoming trained in child sexual abuse prevention. Currently, Eastman is working with male dominated organizations, including California Highway Patrol and Cal Fire, to educate and garner support at a larger level. Since beginning his crusade, the most surprising outcome has been the number of personal disclosures made by men during or after a training. “This could be a large factor as to why so many men have not engaged with this issue,” Eastman said. It serves as an all too real reminder that child sexual abuse does not discriminate between genders. How are men in Central Oregon engaging with child sexual abuse prevention? KIDS Center is proud to have a board of directors that is 45% male, all of whom are determined to change the landscape of child abuse prevention in Central Oregon. Eastman exemplifies how it sometimes takes one person to stand up and say enough is enough. Is it enough for you? Fall is typically a busy season here at KIDS Center. We often think of the back to school frenzy in terms of new shoes and a return to homework, but for a lot of children, heading to the classroom is a respite from the chaos of home. It is a chance to meet a new, trusted adult and voice concerns in a safe environment. What results is a barrage of new, heartbreaking reports to our team. Although most referrals are for girls, we know from national statistics boys are experiencing the trauma of abuse in equal or greater numbers. 1in6 is a federally recognized non-profit who gleaned their name from the truth that 1 in 6 men have been sexually assaulted or abused. Over the past four years, 40% of KIDS Center’s abuse evaluation clients were boys or young men. In April at KIDS Center’s Healing Hearts Luncheon, I implored guests to consider a #KidsToo movement. I asked attendees to have the courage to speak up for the children around us since most will never do it for themselves. Shame, mistrust, and fear are the common reasons why children don’t tell. This is especially true for boys. According to researcher Madelaine Ressel in the March 2018 Child Abuse Review publication, boys who experience sexual abuse are more likely than girls to also experience physical abuse. The societal pressure for boys and men to be stoic, untouchable, and in control, must continue to be broken down. We must address these antiquated expectations to give those who have been abused the ability to express their emotions and receive the healing response everyone, regardless of gender, deserves. As a mom of two teenaged boys, I’m acutely aware of the social barriers boys face when it comes to disclosing feelings. As a society, we must shift our thinking to embrace all disclosures without dismissal, blame, disbelief, or shame. #BoysToo appropriately fits with this mentality. In this issue, you’ll learn more about how you can summon the courage to prevent child abuse, become aware of the signs and symptoms associated with abuse, and the exact steps to take to ensure all children get the immediate help they need. My wife, Janae, and I recently hosted Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children® training with a group of our close friends. The event took place at our home and was facilitated by KIDS Center’s amazing Prevention Coordinator, Rachel Visser. While it is always difficult to hear about child abuse, the stories are real and must be told. Janae and I feel it is our duty to keep our community informed KIDS Center provides the resources needed to do that. Darkness to Light helps individuals learn how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child abuse. A powerful take-away message was the understanding that just knowing what to look for can prevent abuse. We are so thankful KIDS Center can provide this education. We are equally grateful to the individuals who choose to be a part of these trainings every year. If you have not already taken a training with KIDS Center (or it has been some time since your last training), I urge everyone in our community to take advantage of this tremendous resource. We all must participate to make a lasting impact in our community. I assure you, you will be glad you did!

A COMMUNITY COMING TOGETHER FOR KIDS CENTER KIDS Center is beyond grateful to be chosen as the 2018 Charity of Choice by Central Oregon’s local PacificSource employees. In addition to a $10,000 grant awarded to support child abuse prevention, evaluation, and treatment services, PacificSource and its employees have held numerous fundraisers throughout the year, providing additional funds to KIDS Center. WELCOME NEW STAFF AND BOARD MEMBERS Our Board of Directors consists of many wonderful and committed members of our community. We are grateful for their leadership, governance, and fundraising efforts. We are also delighted to welcome three new staff members in 2018. They are wonderful additions to our KIDS Center Team!
Leslie Neugebauer, Board Member Leslie moved to Central Oregon in 2011 from the San Francisco Bay Area. She and her husband bought a fixer-upper farmhouse on 10 acres with their Dexter cattle, chickens, and dogs. Leslie works for PacificSource Health Plans as the Director of the Central Oregon CCO and enjoys the work she does to support community members. Leslie also serves on the local Sparrow Clubs Board as childhood health, wellness, and prevention efforts are of personal and professional interest to her.
Sylena Henneous, Front Desk and Volunteer Coordinator Sylena has spent most of her life in Bend, with a few years living in Portland and the South Eastern United States. Her family is her number one priority with a husband of 20 years, a teenage daughter, and a son. With family and friends, Sylena spends time exploring the outdoors, walking her dogs, and enjoying the many craft beers the area offers. She has a passion for at-risk youth and has volunteered for many years at her local church teaching Bible classes. She joined the team at KIDS Center in February 2018.

Dr. Hanna is a DO and has lived in Bend for the past few years. She received her medical degree from Touro University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in Nevada and her Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of California. She is board certified in Pediatrics and also holds certifications in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP.) In her spare time, Guitar enjoys spending time with her three daughters and husband being out in nature.
Lois has 27 years of experience with the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) where she began as an emergency response worker and held other various positions. Throughout her career, Lois has had the opportunity to support children and families, specifically those who have experienced abuse. She has also worked collaboratively with community partners, legislators, and the court system to address families’ needs. Lois holds a J.D. and is passionate about protecting children from abuse.

Dietrich von Behren is SVP, Business Development & Strategy for Reelgood. He has led business development from San Francisco/Silicon Valley, was Vice President, Corporate Development & Investments for A+E Networks, and the founder & CEO of ParentsClick Network, Inc. In a prior life, Dietrich was a private banker and business financial advisor with Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley during the dot-com goldrush. It inspired the entrepreneurial path that would follow.
Dr. Heavilin joined KIDS Center after serving as a pediatrician at Redmond’s St. Charles Family Care Clinic. She holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University and Post-Doctoral training at Children’s Hospital of Colorado. Throughout her medical training, she has maximized opportunities to gain experience specifically in the field of child abuse. Dr. Heavilin is deeply invested in protecting children and providing education to the community.
