A Critical Component to a Family’s Healing by Gabrielle Allender, LCSW, Family Support Supervisor Children and youth who come to KIDS Center for a child abuse evaluation have often experienced trauma – and they and their families are in a state of crisis. Research shows that having professional support during a time of crisis is beneficial to parents throughout their family’s journey of healing. Our Family Support Specialists serve as advocates for these families by reducing their fears and uncertainty about their experience, and assisting them in navigating the multiple systems that are often unfamiliar to them.
The Family Support Program at KIDS Center began in 2009 and has since improved and expanded the services available to families in Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook counties. Additional staff and resources have allowed our Family Support Program to meet the needs of an increased number of children and families affected by abuse, including Spanish speaking families. As an accredited Child Abuse Intervention Center (CAIC), KIDS Center follows the National Children’s Alliance Standards, holding KIDS Center accountable for all services provided to families and the community. The National Children’s Alliance Standards outline the responsibilities of our Family Support Team, which include the completion of specialized training in victim advocacy and on-going education in the field of child maltreatment.

Each family’s response to trauma is unique. The role of a Family Support Specialist includes building rapport with the parents and identifying and responding to the individual needs of each family. Families receive emotional support, crisis management, direct connections to community and treatment resources, and ongoing education and information. Family Support also serves as a resource to community members and agencies, offering these same resources to those who call KIDS Center for support. A Family Support Specialist remains a constant resource to a family and often has the most contact with parents following their visit to KIDS Center. For this reason, they play a critical role in informing parents how utilizing community resources and services can directly influence their child’s healing. KIDS Center works closely with many community agencies in the tri-county region. These partnerships are vital in building a network of care for families including direct connections with housing and basic needs, referrals to trauma focused and trained therapists, and access to health insurance and long-term medical care. As a CAIC, KIDS Center has the responsibility to provide immediate and long term support to families of children who have experienced abuse. Our Family Support Specialists are a dedicated team that works passionately with families to help meet their basic needs as well as provide hope and encouragement on their journey of healing. We had an especially memorable guest speaker at this year’s Cork & Barrel fundraising event. Damon Holland, now 23 years old, shared how his grandparents saved him from the abusive and neglectful home where he spent his early years to age four. He shared how they believed in him, nurtured him in a safe and loving environment, and provided him with all he needed to grow up healthy and confident. An important part of this nurturing included their bringing him to KIDS Center. He shared with the audience his experience at KIDS Center, where he was able to tell his story and for the first time, he felt good. He went on to receive critical counseling to heal from the trauma caused by his abuse. This young man graduated from college, married, and is now working in the mental health field helping others. His grandparents gave him a strong foundation which enabled him to discover happiness, comfort, and purpose. What an inspiration he is for us. In the first half of this year alone, KIDS Center has provided more than 800 children, youth, and adults with critical prevention, evaluation, and intervention services. In this issue, our family support team is featured, and you’ll learn more about how they directly assist and provide resources for caregivers throughout our community. Family Support Specialists are absolutely invaluable, providing lifelines to parents and are often the critical difference between a family who merely survives abuse and one who thrives after abuse. As we look to the future and continue to enrich and expand services to families, KIDS Center’s Board of Directors and staff are currently engaged in updating our strategic plan. Through this process, we hope to identify key goals and specific ways to maximize our prevention efforts, child abuse assessments, family support services, and mental health resources. With our clients’ needs at the center of our planning, we look forward to sharing these plans with you in the near future.

Department Spotlight: Family Support Child abuse affects the whole family. 90% of the time, abuse happens in the home which can result in the loss of the family’s primary provider, often leaving the family without a home and the resources to purchase necessities. Family Support Specialists help connect families with additional resources such as shelter, food and toiletries, and therapy so that they can begin the healing process. We help reduce life stressors so that caregivers can focus on their child. We asked our Family Support Specialists to highlight a few memorable stories and share why they love what they do.

What do you enjoy most about working with families?
“I appreciate being able to meet and hear from children who have disclosed abuse and know that they are on their way to healing. Often times, we work with the families the longest, and it can be hard when we lose touch with the families for various reasons. Those who come back to you afterward, to tell you how amazing they are doing, is what keeps me engaged in continuing the work.” -Terra

How does providing basic needs, like clothing, impact a family?
“I worked with a father who was unable to purchase new clothing for his growing daughter. I observed her clothes to be sizes too small and her shoes were quite worn. The father and his daughter were so excited to receive clothing and shoes that she could run around the playground comfortably in.” -Kristin

How does your role support bilingual families?
“I love being able to support our Latino families. Working with bilingual families can be complicated. It is not uncommon for the children to speak English, while the parents depend on them or others to translate what is already a complicated and daunting process. I love that I can support both the parents as well as the kids in a culturally sensitive way that ensures all involved are receiving the information, support, and services that they need.” -Rosa

What are some moments that stand out to you?
“Providing a Christmas for families that would not have been able to celebrate otherwise. Connecting families with Healing Reins and Boys & Girls Club at no cost has also been rewarding. Being that person who can listen and understand takes such a weight off their shoulders. Giving families resources and connections that empower them to help their family in a positive way…these things keep me going.” -Rachel 3

Welcome New Staff and Board Members Our Board of Directors consists of many wonderful and committed members of our community. We are grateful for their leadership, governance, and fundraising efforts. We are also delighted to welcome three new staff members in 2017. They are wonderful additions to our KIDS Center Team! Ali Dietz, Board Member Ali is the Marketing Director at Warren John West, PC in Bend and owner of DogWatch of Central Oregon. She received her B.S. in Political Science from Portland State University. Ali is active in the community and volunteers at several local non-profit organizations. She lives in Bend with her husband and their two daughters.
David Gilmore, Board Member David Gilmore is a broker at Coldwell Banker Morris Real Estate. In addition to serving on KIDS Center’s Board, he donates his time and talents to the Bethlehem Inn Board and High Desert Chamber Music Board. You can find him in his free time with his partner Scott and their two dogs, often RVing around the beautiful Pacific NW or attending a local fundraiser.
Molly Carroll, Board Member Molly Carroll is a non-fiction writer, artist, educator, and therapist who holds a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology. She is an expert in her field with over 20 years of experience in education and mental health. Molly wrote and developed the journal Cracking Open and is working on her second book about intuition that will be published this fall. She is also a successful public speaker.
Eric Roach, Board Member Eric is the Director of Accounting for Les Schwab in Bend. He is a CPA and has held a variety of accounting and finance roles for technology and manufacturing companies. Eric, his wife Julie, and their two sons are originally from Maine, and is a graduate of the University of Maine and the University of Southern Maine. He enjoys skiing, golfing, and off-road motorcycling.
Stacy Neil, Board Member Stacy is a Deputy District Attorney at the Deschutes County DA’s Office. Stacy earned her law degree from Willamette University and B.A. Degrees in Psychology and Sociology from the UofO. She worked for KIDS Center as a Forensic Interviewer and the Evaluation Program Director from 2011-2015 while taking a break from prosecution and previously served on KIDS Center’s Board.
Rachel Visser, Front Desk Receptionist Rachel Visser comes from Southern California, by way of Eastern New Mexico with advanced degrees in Counseling and English. When able, she enjoys reading, cooking, and taking spontaneous vacations with her husband and her lovable pup, Alice. One of her bucket list items is to visit New Zealand.
Ginger Theis-Stevens, Event Coordinator Ginger Theis-Stevens, Cork & Barrel’s Event Coordinator, has a 15+ year background in national and international event coordination and non-profit revenue generation. She most looks forward to seeing dollars raised at Cork & Barrel used “to help children and families right here in Central Oregon.”
Sarah Wolcott, Winery & Restaurant Coordinator Sarah Wolcott, the Winery & Restaurant Coordinator for Cork & Barrel has sold, marketed, and written about wine for over 15 years for many wineries, distributors, and import companies throughout the west coast, Latin America, and Europe. The Pine Tavern Restaurant & Bar will host their 3rd annual PT82 Beerfest Invitational on October 21 at 4pm. 18 Central Oregon breweries will be competing to be Pine Tavern’s next signature "PT82" Beer. The aim of the competition is to select a winning beer and brewery and celebrate the craft beer industry in Bend! Proceeds from this event benefit KIDS Center.
