Kiddos Publisher’s Notes

A Sip of Summer HAPPY SUMMER

Our June/July Summer is finally here!

The days are longer, the kids are out of school, and families everywhere are looking forward to making memories together. Whether you are planning a vacation, exploring local attractions, attending community events, or simply enjoying quality time at home, summer offers endless opportunities for fun, learning, and connection.

As the excitement for the upcoming World Cup continues to build, Kiddos Magazine had the unique opportunity to interview renowned sports broadcaster and soccer personality Fernando Fiore. In our main feature, Soccer, Family & Passion, Fernando shares insights from his remarkable career, his passion for the sport, and family traditions.

This edition is also dedicated to celebrating all the amazing dads and father figures who make a difference in the lives of children every day. Father's Day is a wonderful reminder to recognize the love, guidance, support, and encouragement that fathers provide throughout every stage of life. We thank all dads for the countless ways they help their families grow and thrive.

At the same time, we recognize that Father's Day can be a difficult time for some families. In this issue, we also share a thoughtful article about navigating Father's Day without a Dad—offering comfort, reflection, and ideas for honoring cherished memories.

Inside this issue, you'll also find summer camps, educational programs, book reviews, snacks ideas, parenting resources, product recommendations, and community events designed to keep your family engaged all season long.

Thank you for continuing to support Kiddos Magazine and the many local businesses, organizations, and community partners who help us bring valuable resources to families throughout South Florida.

Wishing you a safe, happy, and memorable summer!

“Soccer, Family & Passion” with Fernando Fiore

What are some of your favorite soccer memories from childhood?

Fernando Fiore: My favorite soccer memories are tied to my family. Growing up in Argentina, I lived close to River Plate's stadium, and every Sunday my father and I would walk hand in hand to watch our team play. Back then, Sundays were soccer days, and those moments became a special family tradition that I will never forget.

"Soccer is passion, soccer is a wonderful sport to share with your family and friends, soccer is a big part of my life."
Fernando Fiore

Few personalities have brought as much excitement, energy, and passion to the world of soccer as Fernando Fiore. With a career spanning decades and an Emmy Award-winning legacy in sports broadcasting, Fernando has become a familiar face to millions of soccer fans across the Americas. As

hand to anticipation builds for another thrilling soccer season and the road to the World Cup continues, Kiddos Magazine had the unique opportunity to speak with Fernando about his love for the game, the importance of family, and how soccer continues to inspire and connect generations both on and off the field.

KM: One of your most memorable experiences as a fan was seeing River Plate become champion in 1975. Can you tell us about that moment?

Fernando Fiore: It was an unforgettable experience. Through a contest, I was able to take my parents to the stadium and watch River Plate win the championship in 1975 after a 17-year title drought. Sharing that historic moment with my mother and father made it even more special. As an only child, it was always the three of us together, and that victory remains one of my most cherished soccer memories.

KM: What inspired your passion for soccer and your career in broadcasting?

Fernando Fiore: My passion for broadcasting started long before my love of soccer. From the time I was 4 or 5 years old, I knew I wanted to communicate and perform. I always wanted to participate in school plays, ceremonies, and public events. As I grew older, I became the master of ceremonies for school celebrations and loved speaking in front of people. Broadcasting wasn't something I discovered later in life—it was something I felt I was born to do. I was fortunate enough to turn that passion into a career, and I thank God every day for the opportunity to do what I love.

KM: What will your role be during the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

Fernando Fiore: The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be my 10th World Cup as a broadcaster, and I’m honored to be part of it. I’ll be returning to Telemundo, where I started my career in 1988, to contribute to both its digital and television coverage. It’s exciting to be part of a World Cup that will reach fans across so many platforms and continue sharing the passion of the game with audiences around the world.

KM: What are “El Presidente” and “Mr. Panini”?

Fernando Fiore: “El Presidente” was a nickname I received in 1999 when we launched República Deportiva on

‘El

Presidente.’

‘Mr. Panini’ came later through my long relationship with Panini. I’ve been a spokesperson for the brand for many years and have always loved the tradition of collecting stickers, especially with my son, Gianluca. Over time, my connection to the brand became so strong that people began calling me ‘Mr. Panini,’ a title I proudly embrace because it represents family, tradition, and a passion for soccer.”

KM: Who are your three favorite soccer players?

KM: Why do you think soccer is such a powerful sport for kids and families?

Fernando Fiore: Soccer brings families together. Some of my favorite memories are playing and sharing the game with my son, Gianluca. My advice to parents is to let children choose the sports they enjoy, rather than pushing them. Soccer is special because it's simple,

Fernando Fiore: My three favorite players are Lionel Messi, Pelé, and Diego Maradona. I've been fortunate to broadcast Inter Miami games and watch Messi up close over the last three years. I also had the privilege of spending time with Pelé after his years with the Cosmos, creating memories I will always cherish. And Maradona was simply a magician on the field—one of the greatest talents the game has ever seen. Those three stand out as my alltime favorites. k

health Fathers, Your Health Matters Too

Between work, school pickups, bills, sports practices, and trying to keep the household running, many fathers become experts at taking care of everyone except themselves. But Men’s Health Month is an important reminder that staying healthy is not just about you, it’s about your family too.

Across the United States, men are more likely to delay routine medical care and preventive screenings, even though they face higher risks for heart disease, cancer, diabetes, depression, and other chronic conditions. Men also live an average of five years less than women.

The good news? Small changes can make a major difference.

life overnight. Men’s Health Month is about building sustainable habits that improve long-term health.

A few important areas include:

• Scheduling an annual physical

• Monitoring blood pressure and cholesterol

• Exercising regularly, even with simple daily walks

• Strength training to maintain muscle and mobility

• Improving sleep habits

• Eating more whole foods and fewer processed foods

• Managing stress in healthier ways

• Talking openly about mental health

Why Fathers Often Put Their Health Last

Many dads are conditioned to “push through” exhaustion, stress, pain, or anxiety. They focus on providing, protecting, and supporting their families while quietly ignoring their own

But preventive care matters. Routine exams and screenings can catch problems early before they become serious or life changing.

And children notice more than we think. Fathers who prioritize their own wellness often model healthy habits for the entire family.

Even small improvements add up over time.

Mental Health Is Part of Men’s Health

One of the biggest shifts happening nationally is greater awareness around men’s mental health. Stress, anxiety, burnout, and depression often go untreated because many men feel pressure to stay silent or “handle it alone.”

But emotional health affects everything from relationships and parenting, to work performance, sleep, energy, and physical health.

Strong fathers are not fathers who ignore stress. Strong fathers are willing to ask for help when they need it.

A Summer of Learning at The History of Diving Museum

Exhibits begin with early breathhold diving and continue through the development of hard hats used in commercial and military diving. Did you know the first dive boats to take people out to the reef were right here in the Florida Keys? These divers used the Miami-made Miller-Dunn Divinhood helmets, which were used around

the world by early pioneers in underwater photography, treasure diving, marine biology, and the military!

Visitors will also see the progression to modern day scuba, as well as armored diving suits used to descend into the abyss. Kids can challenge themselves with a fun scavenger hunt through

the exhibits, tracking hidden artifacts and Playmobil divers while they enjoy handson interactive displays. Experience the thrill of discovery as you lift a real silver treasure bar from a sunken Spanish galleon, see what it’s like to sit inside a diving bell, or look through a diving helmet into the aquarium as fish go by.

From now until the end of the year, you can also catch Prescribed Pressure. This limited-time featured exhibit explores the incredible world of undersea and hyperbaric medicine. Learn how the first to suffer from “the bends” were not divers at all, how dive safety evolved, and how pressure can both harm and heal the body. k

5 Tips for Loving Trips

Oh, that poor mom,” I thought as I watched a woman squat down in front of her sweaty toddler, who was ripping off his Mickey ears. She held his melting ice cream with the same hand she used to wipe her bangs out of her face, and some dripped on her leg. For them, this no longer felt like the happiest place on Earth. As a local, I always cringe when I’m at Disney and see a melting-down family of tourists. (The sunburn is a dead giveaway.) I think, “Nooo! This is your big vacation! You’ve spent so much money! Everything’s OK!”

Then, the tables turn, and I take my family somewhere and make the same rookie mistakes. Our expectations are too high, our itinerary too full, and I get home from vacation saying “I need a

vacation.” So how can moms actually enjoy trips with kids? Try these 5 tips for how to plan a family vacation you’ll enjoy, too.

1

Choose a spot that works with your kids’ ages and interests, not against them.

We took a trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains when my sons were 10 and 9. We hiked trails, rode horses… You know, mountainy things. Had we taken that trip three years earlier, I would’ve been a nervous wreck, constantly worried that someone would get hurt. It’s hard to be patient and wait for the right ages to try new adventures with your kids, but it’s worth it.

And sometimes you have to accept that a destination might not be right

for your family at all. Your husband’s dream to visit all the MLB stadiums might not jibe with your non-athletic crew. Remember, you two have plenty of time without the kids once they’re out from under your wings. Make these trips as kid-friendly as possible.

2

Try not to exhaust yourself before vacation starts.

I’m already bummed when vacation ends. Returning to a messy house just makes it worse. I’ve learned to pick up and clean bit by bit the week before instead of staying up until 2 a.m. scrubbing toilets.

Make a plan so you can avoid starting your vacation from a place of depletion. Two weeks out, start a list and do one thing every day. Or pack a week early. Set realistic expectations for what you can get done at work. And if the beds don’t have a fresh set of sheets, trust that you’ll still sleep well when you get home.

3

Pack as light as possible.

The less you have to carry, the easier it will be to travel. Fewer bags will also make it less likely you and your husband will bicker through gritted teeth as you play Tetris with your luggage in the trunk.

Lighten your load by asking, “Are we really going to need this?” as you pack everyone’s bags. And let the kids pack two stuffed animals, not seven. “Mr. Frog and Beary can come on the next vacation. This time, they get to hold down the fort!”

(Moms of the pre-potty trained, ignore this tip. You need the entire baby section from Target. Just bring it all, and thank your pack mule husband for carrying everything.)

4

Schedule rest.

Of all the tips for how to plan a family vacation, this one might be the most tempting to ignore. After all, when you spend a pretty penny to travel somewhere, the last thing you want to do is hit pause on the fun and go back to the hotel to nap or take a breather. But it’s better to have four days with a rested, happy family than seven with an overtired, bickering one.

5

Go with the flow.

I’m a planner, and I’ve used Excel spreadsheets for more vacations than I would like to admit. But once I’m in vacaymode, one of my favorite things to say is, “Let’s see where the day takes us.” That gives you permission to let go of control, shifting everyone’s focus from what’s happening next to what’s happening now.

If you stumble upon a park and the kids are getting along while playing “pirates” on the jungle gym, don’t rush off to the next thing. Be present where you are, and you might suddenly realize you’re on vacation after all!

ASK YOUR CHILD...What’s the best family vacation we’ve ever taken?

When the world plays, we bake. Families gathered around the TV. Recipes pulled from memory and made by hand. This summer, make something worth sharing with Wilton's bakeware, icings, and sprinkles to help you do it right. Because the best traditions are homemade. These cake pops are a great way to celebrate the excitement of your team's definitive match. Use traditional black and white or make a cheerful variation on classic soccer balls by using bright colors on a classic white background.

Skill Level: Intermediate Yield: 24 treats

Ingredients

• Use your favorite cake pop recipe

• Wilton Candy Melts® in Bright White, Blue, Red, Black, and Yellow, 12 oz.

• Wilton FoodWriter Color Fine-Tip Edible Markers, 5-Piece

Tools

• Wilton Aluminum Sheet Cake Pan, 9 x 13-Inch

• Pops 2 Tiered Display Stand

• Wilton White 6-Inch Lollipop and Cake Pop Sticks, 100-Count

• Wilton 12-Inch Disposable Cake Decorating Bags, 50-Count Pastry Bags

Instructions

-Prepare cake pops. Prepare cake balls or pops in oblong cake pan according to recipe instructions and roll into balls. Place each onto a lollipop stick and insert stick into display stand. Melt white Candy Melts candy according to package instructions. Dip the tip of each paper stick into melted candy and insert into a cake ball. Place in pops stand and chill until set, about 15-20 minutes.

-Dip pops in white candy. Using reheated or still-warm white melted candy, dip each cake pop into white candy and tap to remove excess. Replace stick in stand and repeat. Chill until set, about 5 to 10 minutes.

-Add soccer pattern. Use a red, blue or yellow FoodWriter edible color marker

to trace the pattern onto the cake pop, beginning with top center and drawing lines outward from each pentagon point. Trace next pentagon at the end of each line. Continue tracing soccer pattern until you cover entire cake pop. Repeat for remaining desired number of pops.

-Trace pattern with melted candy. Melt colored Candy Melts candy according to package instructions and place each in a separate disposable decorating bag. Cut a small opening in each bag and trace over pattern, piping lines and filling in pentagons. Chill pops until set, about 5 to 10 minutes.

Jump, Climb, and Discover the Science of Extreme Sports

Dive into Extreme Sports: Beyond Human Limits at the Phillip and Patricia

Frost Museum of Science

From soaring through the air to balancing high above the ground, extreme sports come to life this summer at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science (Frost Science) in Downtown Miami.

In Extreme Sports: Beyond Human Limits, you’re invited to challenge yourself as you jump, fly, dive, and climb through some of the most exciting sports in the world. This high-energy experience blends adrenaline and discovery, revealing the science and psychology behind how athletes perform at their very best.

With the excitement of the FIFA World Cup 2026 building, the exhibition also features Science of Soccer, a special section developed by Frost Science all about the world’s most popular game. Test your skills at interactive stations like MultiBall, where you can kick, react, and score while learning how timing, speed, and accuracy come together on the field. Ever wondered how players curve the ball or sprint so fast? It all comes down to physics and how the body generates power.

Extreme sports may look like they’re only for daredevils, but they actually require focus, quick thinking, and control. Your muscles, brain, and senses work together to help you react in an instant,

Inside the exhibition, you can become part of the action:

•Test your balance on a high-line, just like real slackliners

• Race through a parkour course using speed, strength, and strategy

• Step into a wingsuit simulation and experience how air resistance and gravity shape every glide

Younger explorers can scale kid-sized climbing walls and discover how grip strength and body positioning help climbers reach new heights. When it’s time to rest, climb into a portaledge, a hanging tent used by climbers who spend nights on the sides of cliffs.

With hands-on challenges and real

the exhibition offers something for both kids and adults to enjoy together.

Father’s Day Without a Dad: How You Can Help Your Kids

What memories does Father’s Day pull up for you? I remember watching my dad unwrap ties, golf balls, and yet another paperweight I’d made him at school. But Father’s Day is hard for many, including me and my children. My kids have two hard reminders this month: the anniversary of their dad’s death and, on the heels of that, another Father’s Day without a dad.

I can’t fix their hurt and that stinks. And while I want to honor my own father, who’s a great man, I want to recognize my children’s pain and deep loss. Perhaps you or your children are also navigating a hard Father’s Day this year because of death or divorce or a dad who just hasn’t shown up for his family as he should. There’s no quick fix for the pain, but here are 5 ways to help when Father’s Day hurts.

1Make a new memory at an old place. Last year, my kids and I went to an old restaurant where their dad and I had our second date. The food took a long time to arrive, which was perfect because we had more time to talk. We walked along the riverbank outside,

pitched rocks across the water, and just enjoyed the family we do have. This intentional time together filled our hearts on a day that could have emptied them.

2Be

extra considerate of your child. Once, at our church, my children had to color homemade cards for a dad they don’t have. It was too hard. If Father’s Day is hard for your family, consider letting your kids skip Sunday school that day so they don’t get put in a painful position. At home, be careful not to put on any movies or shows that center on dads or fatherhood. And steer clear of places or events where your kids will be confronted with other people’s Father’s Day celebrations.

3Plan a meaningful family outing. For each Father’s Day, we plan a fun outing together. But we’ve chosen not to do a theme park, which might just numb over the pain. Rather, we choose an activity that gives us time to talk and enjoy each other.

4Listen to your child’s heart. Ignoring Father’s Day won’t make the pain disappear. I try to note that the

pain this day brings but not linger in it. Ask your kids some gentle questions and show compassion as they respond. This isn’t a time to criticize their father with remarks of what he should have done or been. That’s never healing. This is a day to listen, to let them express their feelings, to hear concerns, and to answer questions.

5Tell stories about Dad.

Kids need to know about their dad. I’m always surprised how my kids eat up family stories and how many they still don’t know. They love when I tell stories about their dad growing up (those I heard myself) and stories of our dating and early married years. If these are painful for you, tell stories about the kids and their dad or go through photo albums and videos. Telling our children stories about their dad helps them know who they are and whose they are.

6Honor other strong men in your child’s life.

Perhaps your children have an uncle, grandfather, or stepfather who has been like a father in many ways. We need tenderly to understand that it will never erase our children’s loss, so we shouldn’t gloss over their pain. But we can honor the men who are in our children’s lives.

Moms, we’re raising future dads and the wives of future dads. When Father’s Day hurts, it’s an opportunity to walk our children through the pain and help them see the importance of good fathers.

How have you handled Father’s Day when it hurts? Let us know in the comments! k
