Winds of love

Welcome to our Spring Issue! We’ve packed this edition with helpful ideas, and fun opportunities for families to connect and make the most of the season.

In this February–March issue, we’re diving into one of parents’ favorite (and most important!) Topic: Ready, Set, Camp! Finding the Right Camp for Your Child. Whether your child is curious about science, arts, nature, cooking or simply making new friends, camps offer an incredible opportunity for growth, independence, and confidence. We’ve gathered tips, resources, and local programs to help you start planning early and find the best fit for your child — and your family’s schedule.

Love is in the air! This Valentine’s Day, our Love & Family Activity Roundup goes beyond candy and cards to spotlight meaningful ways families can connect. Whether it’s exploring local museums, enjoying hands-on cooking classes, or escaping on a romantic getaway, there are so many ways to celebrate love.

Single on Valentine’s Day? In our 3 Things to Love feature, we remind moms to celebrate self-love, appreciate the meaningful connections in their lives, and step into the season feeling empowered.

Spring is a great time to try something new! This issue also features a handpicked mix of health tips, camps, spring destinations, school programs, book recommendations, and snack ideas to help your children stay curious, active, and inspired.

As always, we’re proud to highlight trusted local resources, and community partners who share our mission of supporting families every step of the way. Thank you for continuing to welcome Kiddos Magazine into your homes and for being part of our growing community.

Here’s to a season filled with love, discovery, and excitement for what’s ahead.

Ready, Set, Camp! Finding the Right Camp for Your Child

You are considering a summer camp, but how to choose? There’s a camp that is ideally suited for every child, providing a summer of growth and fun whether your child attends a day or overnight camp, a specialized or traditional camp. With a little help from the camp professionals at the American Camp Association, here’s some sound advice that helps parents sort through the choices and benefits that camp delivers. As spring approaches, parents and children can look forward to planning for the future—a future that includes the opportunities for exploration and discovery that arrives with summer camp.

How to Decide When Your Child is Ready for Camp

Children are ready for new experiences at different stages. Parents know their children best and these questions can help gauge whether this is the summer your child will start camp.

What is your child's age, and what is your perception of his or her readiness level? Children under 7 who have not had overnight experiences may do better with a day camp as their first camp experience. If you think your child might not be ready for an overnight camp experience, consider the day

camp experience to prepare him or her for future overnight camp.

How did your child become interested in camp? Does your child talk about camp on a sustained basis? How much persuasion is necessary from you?

Has your child had positive overnight experiences away from home? Visiting relatives or friends? Were these separations easy or difficult?

What does your child expect to do at camp? Learning about the camp experience ahead of time allows you to create positive expectations.

Are you able to share consistent and positive messages about camp? Your confidence in a positive experience will be contagious.

A Camp for Every Child—The Perfect Fit

Camp can last for just a few days or stretch to all summer long. It’s well worth the trouble to investigate the variety of choices offered by camps before your child packs a backpack. These questions help you consider the options.

Near or Far?

Where do you want your child to go to camp? Locally or far away? While each camp experience has something unique to offer your child, this is an opportunity for families to assess what they value for their campers.

Benefits of Camp Nearby

Easier to evaluate and visit

Friends and family are likely familiar with camp

Minimal travel costs

Likely contact with classmates or children from same region

Benefits of Camp Far Away

• More choices

• Different experiences, different geography, e.g., mountains or oceans—even different languages

• Promotes independence, particularly for early and late adolescent campers

• Diversity of campers

• Chance for family to visit and vacation at close of camp

A Camp for Every Child—Traditional, Specialty, and Special Needs

Choices abound when it comes to camp programs. One may highlight a wide variety of activities geared to campers of all ages and skill levels, others, because of their setting and expertise, may concentrate on one or two activities while providing traditional activities as well. Parents of children with special needs are pleased to learn about the range of camp activities that help kids be kids first.

Benefits of Traditional Camps

• Wide variety of activities

• Chance for campers to try new activities

• Exposure to more campers and staff at varying activities

Benefits of Special Needs Camps

• Activities geared to campers’ abilities

• Knowledgeable staff with expertise to understand campers’ strengths and challenges

• Supportive and fun atmosphere to share with others

The Value of Camp for Every Child

What happens when you make the decision to choose camp? You open up a world of discovery and learning for your child, a world that values children for who they are and who they will become. Camp gives each child a world of good. k

Health & Wellness Care for Your Mind, Body, Heart, and Weight

Health and Wellness in 2026: Tips for Mind-Body Balance

A new year brings fresh opportunities to prioritize health and wellness, both inside and out. Many of us set goals to exercise more, eat healthier, or finally stick to a sleep routine. But at Care Resource, we know true wellness encompasses far more. Lasting well-being requires nurturing your mind, heart, body, and maintaining a healthy weight.

The CDC observes that both mild and major depression significantly elevate a person’s 10-year cardiovascular disease risk, with younger adults showing heightened lifetime risk. For example, adults with mild depression face substantially greater long-term risk than those without, emphasizing how emotional distress can shape heart health

Caring for your mental well-being promotes physical health: better sleep, more energy, fewer aches. The American Heart Association is increasingly highlighting this psychological-physiological link, noting that emotional health can

accelerate the development of cardiovascular risk factors like hypertension and plaque buildup.

The American Heart Association updated its framework to “Life’s Essential 8,” outlining eight key elements for lifelong cardiovascular health: healthy diet, physical activity, nicotine avoidance, sleep, weight, cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure.

Wellness isn’t about perfection, it’s about progress. When you care for your mental health, maintain a healthy weight, and protect your heart, you’re investing in your future. Small steps like moving more, eating balanced meals, and managing stress can trans form your life. –

Maintaining a healthy weight, typically a BMI under 25, is vital. It alleviates strain on the heart, lowers diabetes risk, boosts metabolism, and supports selfesteem. Balanced nutrition rich in whole foods, fiber, lean proteins, and healthy fats help regulate blood sugar, cholesterol, and body weight. Regular physical activity, about 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly, helps manage weight, reduce heart disease risk, and lift mood through endorphin release.

Dr. Vanessa Rojas, MD

Practical Steps to Thrive in 2026 Start with achievable daily habits that nourish both mind and body:

• Prioritize moments of self-care, whether reading, journaling, quiet reflection, or walking, to alleviate stress and build resilience.

• Move your body in joyful ways. Yoga, dancing, gardening, or brisk

walks support heart health, foster energy, and ease anxiety.

• Choose balanced meals filled with colorful fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and stay hydrated.

• Nurture social connections through conversations, shared activities, or support networks.

• If you feel overwhelmed, it’s okay to ask for help. Counseling, support groups, or mental health resources can be transformative.

• Set practical goals: for instance, aim for three 15-minute walks per week or screen-free wind-down time each night. Small steps build momentum.

Improving health doesn’t require sweeping changes consistently; small actions deliver big results. At Care Resource, we support your journey with counseling, nutrition guidance, exercise planning, and heart-health resources. We’ll help you strengthen your mind, maintain a healthy weight, protect your heart, and foster overall wellness.

Let’s make 2026 the year you feel better inside and out, one mindful choice at a time. k

parenting-motherhood

Valentine’s Day never mattered much to me. I remember getting a teddy bear with red hearts on its feet in ninth grade. The boy I was “going out with” had sprayed the bear with (or possibly dunked it in) Cool Water cologne. Other than that, February 14th never left much of a mark—that is until the year I was going through a divorce and was alone on Valentine’s Day.

That year, something that had never meant much meant everything. A lonely Valentine’s Day felt like a preview of a lonely life. It sounds overdramatic, but that’s how it can feel when you look around and see other people in love. But there are things worse than being alone on Valentine’s Day, so instead of lamenting about your singleness, remind yourself of these 3 things to celebrate.

1You have love in your life. Romantic love is initially based on attraction and often status. And unfortunately, it can be conditional. That’s why I wore makeup on my first date with my now husband, and he may or may not have done a set of pushups before ringing my doorbell.

Meanwhile, the love that’s in our lives through our children is unconditional. It’s sewn into the fabric of our relationships. Even if we yell or they’ve rolled their eyes for the fifteenth time today, the love between mothers and children is solid. I remember looking at my son in his newborn days and realizing I didn’t have to do anything to earn his love. I needed a shower, a toothbrush, and a fresh shirt. He didn’t care. Pure love.

The love in your life today might not be romantic love, but don’t ignore its significance if you’re alone on Valentine’s Day.

2You’re rebuilding.

Whatever led to you being alone on Valentine’s Day—divorce, the death of your husband, abandonment— you’ve been through a period of loss or stripping away. But now, I hope you’re in a time of rebuilding. You get to create a healthier you, a heart that’s open to loving again, or a more stable environment for your kids.

Give yourself a V-Day gift. Write down three things you want to be able to say next year at this time. (“I have a date” can’t be one of them.) Some ideas are: I found a job I enjoy more, I’ve forgiven people I needed to forgive for my own well-being, and I’ve gotten better at prioritizing my physical and mental health. Under each statement, write one step you can take to get there and give that step a due date.

3You’re not in a relationship with someone just to fill a void.

There are some women who have Valentines, but they’re men who disrespect them, use them, disregard their children… You get my drift. You could have a date tonight if you lowered your standards or were just looking for a warm body. You could probably also have a date with someone who’s not the one for you but would buy you dinner. Neither of those options honors you or your children.

It’s tempting to write the story of this Valentine’s Day and place yourself as the teary main character. But what if you shifted the

narrative and made yourself the empowered heroine who chooses to settle for nothing less than the right guy at the right time? That transforms a dateless Valentine’s Day from a flaw into a flex.
