Remember when finding a razor blade in candy was every parent’s fear on Halloween? Sure, it’s possible, but pretty unlikely. Like many other fears, focusing on extreme cases causes parents to neglect other more likely dangers.
If your kids are dressing up and going door to door or heading to a trunk or treat, be careful not to get wrapped up in the fun of it all and forget some basic Halloween safety tips. Keeping these in mind will ensure that the only thing you have to be afraid of is your kiddo crashing from his sugar high.
• Make sure costumes aren’t too long or too cumbersome. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that 25% of injuries on Halloween are due to falls.
• Children should carry a flashlight or glow stick or have reflective strips on their costumes. Glow stick necklaces are a great idea because they let your kids’ hands stay on their overflowing pumpkinshaped buckets.
• Costume masks should allow children to breathe easily, see without obstruction, and have good peripheral vision.
• The National Safety Council says, “When buying special Halloween makeup, check for packages containing ingredients that are labeled ‘Made with U.S. Approved Color Additives,’ ‘Laboratory Tested,’ ‘Meets Federal Standards for Cosmetics,’ or ‘Non-Toxic.'”
flammable, so have children keep a safe distance from candles or other open flames. Remind kids to stop, drop, and roll instead of running if their costume catches fire.
• Any swords, guns, or weapons in a costume should NOT appear authentic. If in doubt, have your child leave it at home.
• Children should not eat any candy until a parent or guardian checks it. Razor blades are unlikely. What’s more likely is that your child doesn’t realize a particular candy contains an allergen. Or
they have braces and shouldn’t be eating something sticky or chewy.
• If you teenagers are going to a party, ask for the parents’ names and numbers. If you have any reservations, encourage your child to invite friends over instead. Host a silly-scary movie night or a scavenger hunt.
• Have a plan for what to do if you get separated. One idea is to tell your kids to find a mom with a baby or toddler and ask to use her phone. Tell your kids never to enter someone’s home.
• A meltdown in the middle of the neighborhood is unsafe, so give clear expectations before you head out. You can either tell them they can visit a certain number of homes, or you can put a time limit on trick or treating.
• Tweens and teens may want to go out on their own for trick or treating. Have them tell you exactly where they’re going and who they’re with. Plan Halloween checkpoints—either by phone or in person.
• Parents walking door to door with kids shouldn’t be drinking alcohol. It’s a festive night, but there are too many cars on the road, driveways, and kids running around. You need to be on high alert.
• Tell your kids to always assume drivers cannot see them. Be defensive walkers!
• Turn on your porch light so kids know you’re participating.
• Make sure your sidewalk and yard are clear. If you put up decorations, be careful they’re not tripping hazards.
• Know your pumpkin colors! A child walking with a teal pumpkin has food allergies, so if you have stickers or another toy set aside, be sure to hand those out too. A blue pumpkin indicates that the child has autism. If he doesn’t shout thank you or respond enthusiastically, give him a pass.
What would you add to our Halloween safety tips list? k

amily life can get very busy— between school drop-offs, work deadlines, sports, homework, and laundry, it seems too easy to overlook the simple moments that bring us together. Practicing gratitude as a family is a powerful way to slow down, reconnect, and strengthen the bonds that matter most.
Why Gratitude Matters
Gratitude isn’t just saying “thank you.” It’s about noticing the good things in everyday life: a shared laugh at the dinner table, a big hug after a hard day, or the joy of simply being together. When children learn to focus on what they’re thankful for, they develop stronger selfesteem, more resilience, and an overall greater sense of happiness.
• Gratitude Jar: Keep a jar on the counter and invite everyone to write down one thing they’re thankful for each day. At the end of the week—or even the end of the year—read them aloud together. You can also open one up if you’re having a difficult day!
Thankful at the Table: Make it a tradition to share one thing you’re grateful for at dinner (or bedtime). This simple habit helps kids reflect, focus on the positive, and learn to listen to each other.
• Gratitude Walks: Take a walk as a family and point
out things you appreciate in your surroundings—the bright colored leaves, the cool breeze, animals you see, or the sound of laughter at the park.
Write it Down: Encourage kids to keep a gratitude journal, even if it’s just one sentence or drawing a day.
The Ripple Effect
When parents model gratitude, kids follow. Showing appreciation for your child, noticing their efforts, or expressing gratitude for your partner shows children that gratitude isn’t just a practice—it’s a way of life. Over time, this habit creates a more positive, connected family culture.
Gratitude turns ordinary days into regular celebrations, and family time into moments of growth and true connection. By focusing on appreciation, families can build stronger relationships and teach children one of the most important lessons of all: happiness isn’t about having more, it’s about appreciating what we already have (including each other)! k

The National Domestic Violence Hotline reminds us that: Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence. There is NO “typical victim.” Victims of domestic violence come from all walks of life, varying age groups, all backgrounds, all communities, all education levels, all economic levels, all cultures, all ethnicities, all religions, all abilities, and all lifestyles. That’s why it’s so important to understand the dynamics of abuse”. National Domestic Violence Hotline.
Domestic violence isn’t just about anger or losing one’s temper — it’s about control and fear. Abuse can take many forms, including:
• Physical abuse: hitting, pushing, restraining.
• Emotional abuse: intimidation, humiliation, manipulation, isolation.
• Verbal abuse: constant criticism, yelling, degrading language.
• Sexual abuse: coercion, assault, nonconsensual contact.
• Financial abuse: controlling access to money, jobs, or resources.
• Digital abuse: using technology to harass, stalk, or control.
When children are exposed to Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) they can suffer emotional, behavioral, and developmental impacts. Silence can leave children feeling confused, ashamed, or afraid without knowing what to do. Having trusted adults to talk to can mitigate harm, help children feel less alone and support their resilience.

Ijust wanna play some video games,” my son said after school. He dropped his heavy bag on the kitchen floor and brushed past me. “I need to chill.” Something had happened. Maybe that chem test didn’t go well. Or someone said something at lunch. Sure, I could give him some time to mellow out by gaming, but I knew from experience that the sour mood would return as soon as the gaming ended. Screen time just put his emotions on hold.
Because screens are so much a part of our lives, it’s not realistic to avoid them completely. But too much time online isn’t healthy, especially for teens who are growing and developing so much each day. So how does screen time affect your mental and emotional health? Here are 5 effects of excessive screen use on teens and what we can do about it.
goes up.
“I feel naked without my phone,” admitted one of my teens. It’s become so entrenched in teens’ behavior that putting a phone in their pocket is as habitual as putting on shoes. But too
much screen time may be linked to an increase in depressive symptoms according to research. When they’re looking at screens, they’re not making effort to interact with others and develop relationships. This can lead to loneliness and, consequently, to depression.
What you can do: Designate certain hours for screen-free time each day (for example 5 to 7 p.m.). Have your teens place their devices in a central location where you can keep track of them.
goes up.
In addition to depression, research in ScienceDirect says kids who spend seven or more hours per day on screens are also twice as likely to be diagnosed with anxiety. When kids carry phones to school, the temptation to be on them goes up. Whether it’s in the halls during passing time, at lunch, or even at the end of class checking snaps and texts, many kids use phones throughout the day. But screen time also includes video games, YouTube, and social media in the evenings and on weekends. The hours quickly add up.
What you can do: Set limits on screen time. It’s essential for kids’ mental health to also engage in activities that don’t involve screens. If your kids are used to unlimited screen use, you’ll probably have pushback. But stay firm. You can do this.
Tweens and teens are not too old for a Screen Time Contract. When you know it’ll benefit their mental and emotional health, it’s worth a try. Download ours for free today, and help your teen structure his time better around screens.
goes up.
Even though kids are sending dozens of texts and snaps, playing interactive video games, and posting on social media, they’re connecting less in person. And this has negative consequences. “Kids are more ‘connected’ than ever, yet they feel lonelier,” said Sophia Choukas-Bradley, PhD, in an article by the American Psychological Association. The lack of IRL connections leaves kids without the emotional support of close friendships that they need to get through the bumps of adolescence.
What you can do: Encourage your teen to get a part-time job or volunteer. Both positions expose teens to a variety of individuals, and even casual interactions can combat loneliness. Also, they can add a sense of purpose to your teen’s life, something many people struggle with when they’re feeling lonely, according to Mental Health America.
goes down.
We want our teens to respond to others with empathy, but without reallife practice, skills like really listening, seeing another viewpoint, and showing compassion aren’t developed. Like many of us, teens often use downtime to scroll instead of making small talk at their lockers or even in the lunchroom. Tracy S. Bennett, Ph.D. says, “Some experts
believe that the rate at which young people and children express empathy has declined by as much as 25% in the past 10 years.”
What you can do: Your teen still looks to you as an example (even if she won’t admit it). At home, keep your phone in a drawer when your teens are around and when you’re out together, try to engage with the grocery worker or sales rep instead of using your phone to look up answers.
5Emotional regulation skills don’t improve. When teens are glued to devices, they don’t get practice handling real-life problems and the emotions that come with them. “High users of screens were significantly more likely to display poor emotion regulation (not staying calm, arguing too much, being difficult to get along with), an inability to finish tasks, lower curiosity, and more difficulty making friends,” says the research from ScienceDirect. This really isn’t good news for teens, getting ready to launch into the next phase of life.
What you can do: Help your teen name his emotion (like frustration), and stay calm as you listen to him. Ask open-ended questions to build self-awareness, like “Why do you think they reacted like that?” or “What else could have been done?” And make sure he’s getting enough sleep. All of us handle strong emotions better after a good night’s rest.
As a parent, how does screen time affect your mental and emotional health?

At just 16 years old, JustJules OG is proving that you don’t have to wait until you’re older to accomplish amazing things. From starting college classes at 14, to competing in gymnastics for both the U.S. and Spain, Jules has already achieved more than most people twice her age. But she hasn’t stopped there— her YouTube channel, launched only two years ago, has skyrocketed to nearly 5 million subscribers. Through her videos, Jules shares positivity, faith, and
and my passion for helping people is what inspires me every day. I feel motivated when I wake up because I know that I am working towards everything I’ve ever dreamed of achieving. I am becoming the woman I’ve always looked up to. I don’t just want to be successful, but I want to grow as a person and keep growing my faith.
KM: Why do you think your YouTube channel connects so well with so many
I think people just want to feel seen and good about themselves, and that’s what I try to do. I make content that’s relatable but also uplifting, so when people watch, they feel positive and encouraged. My channel is all about spreading kindness and positivity, and I think that’s why so many people connect with it.
What lessons from gymnastics have helped you in life outside of sports?
KM: What advice would you give other kids and teens who want to succeed early in life?

Thanks to gymnastics, I learned discipline, quick reflexes, manage my time efficiently, and to trust my instincts. Through my headships and broken bones, I’ve also learned to never give up. Even when you fall flat on your face, what counts is not how many times you fall, but how many more times you get back up.
What inspires you about becoming a pilot?
The fact that only about 5% of airline pilots are women motivates me. It’s not an easy path, but I want to show other girls that they can do whatever they set their minds to. Even if people doubt you, you can prove them wrong and chase your dreams.
Jules: I would want to tell them, to keep on moving forward, no matter what. Because if you stop in the tunnel, you’ll never see the light. You’re going to make mistakes and you’re going to fall and get hurt. People are going to talk and try to tear you down, but as long as you keep moving forward, everything will be alright.
KM: How important has your family’s support been in helping you reach your goals?
Jules: My family’s support has been extremely important to me because without them, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve so many things I wanted to! They’ve been there to help me grow my YouTube channel and they’re also there for me emotionally. When I’m overwhelmed, they’re always there to let me know that we’re in this together.
KM: Can you describe Jules in 3 different words?
Jules: Passionate, ambitious, and kind.
