1. What is the Army Fitness Test? The Army Fitness Test (AFT) became the official physical fitness test of record for all Soldiers on June 1, 2025. It replaced the Army Combat Fitness Test. The AFT is designed to increase warfighting readiness, reduce injury risk, and enhance the physical performance of the force. The test has five events. Each event measures a different component of fitness. The Standing Power Throw was part of the old six-event test. It is not part of the AFT. The Army removed it because of its technical nature and injury risk.
The five events • 3-Rep Max Deadlift (MDL). Deadlift the maximum weight possible three times. It measures lower body, grip, and core muscular strength. It uses a 60-pound hex bar and plates. • Hand-Release Push-Up (HRP). Complete as many hand-release push-ups as possible in two minutes. It measures upper body muscular endurance and core strength. • Sprint-Drag-Carry (SDC). Five 50-meter shuttles for time, in order: sprint, drag, lateral, carry, sprint. It uses two 40-pound kettlebells and a 90-pound sled. It measures muscular endurance, muscular strength, anaerobic power, and anaerobic endurance. • Plank (PLK). Hold a proper plank position for as long as possible. It measures core strength and endurance. • Two-Mile Run (2MR). Run two miles for time on a measured, generally flat outdoor course. It measures aerobic endurance.

2. How AFT scores work Each event is scored from 0 to 100 points using the Army's official scoring tables. Your raw result in each event, for example your deadlift weight or your run time, is converted to points with those tables. • Minimum per event. You must score at least 60 points in every event to pass. A high score in one event does not make up for a failed event. • General standard. Scoring is normed by sex and age. The pass mark is a total of 300 points. This standard applies to combat enabling specialties, which is most Soldiers. • Combat standard. Scoring uses one sex-neutral, age-normed standard. The pass mark is a total of 350 points. This standard applies to Soldiers in 21 designated combat specialties. • Maximum total. Five events at 100 points each give a maximum total score of 500 points. • Age groups. The scoring tables are set by age group, from 17-21 through over 62. Your points for the same raw result change as your age group changes. Pick the standard that matches your MOS before you calculate. A score that passes under the General standard may still fall short under the Combat standard.

3. How AFT scores help with passing and promotion Passing Passing the AFT is a record requirement. If you fail a record AFT, you retest. Active-duty, Active Guard Reserve, and Reserve Soldiers on 60-day orders must retest within 90 days. National Guard and Reserve Soldiers must retest within 180 days. For Soldiers in combat specialties, failing the combat standard while meeting the general standard can lead to in-service reclassification. Knowing your score before test day lets you find your weakest event and train it first, so you walk in knowing whether you pass.
Cadets The AFT is the first event incoming Cadets complete at Cadet Summer Training, where Cadets complete all five events. At Advanced Camp, Cadets take the AFT during the reception, staging, onward movement, and integration phase. It is a single-attempt event. A minimum score of 60 points per event is a passing score. CRT points are awarded for the AFT total score. A failure is annotated in the Cadet record, and the Cadet is dismissed from CST without camp credit. No waivers are considered. Cadets who exceed body composition standards but score 465 or above on the AFT, with at least 80 points in each event, are granted a body composition exemption. Because the AFT counts at camp, cadets use the calculator to check where they stand before they arrive.
Promotion Your AFT score converts to promotion points through Table 3-4 of AR 600-8-19, Enlisted Promotions and Demotions, dated 6 March 2026 and effective 6 April 2026. The table converts your aggregate five-event AFT total into promotion points for promotion to sergeant and staff sergeant, under the semi-centralized system. It is a published table, not a percentage calculation. The maximum is 120 points. For example, an aggregate score of 445 to 449 converts to 87 points. A higher total earns more points, which is why the calculator shows a promotion points value from your total score. To qualify for promotion points, you must attain a minimum passing score in each required event taken. Soldiers flagged for AFT failure receive no promotion points. Your most recent record test is the one that counts, even if an earlier test was higher. Your AFT score must be recorded in DTMS to count for promotion points. General standard scores have counted for promotion actions since October 1, 2025. Combat standard scores have counted since January 1, 2026. The AFT does not affect centralized promotions.

4. Body composition: the waist-to-height ratio Body composition is separate from the AFT, and meeting the standard is mandatory for all Soldiers regardless of AFT scores. Under Army Directive 2026-13, the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) replaced the old neck-to-waist tape test as the Army's body composition assessment. • How it is measured. WHtR is waist circumference at the navel divided by height in inches. • The standard. A ratio under 0.55 meets the standard. • How often. Every Soldier is measured twice a year. • If you exceed the standard. A Soldier who exceeds 0.55 on the initial screening and on a same-day confirmation test is flagged and enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program. • Separations. No separation actions for WHtR failure will occur until the Army completes a 180-day review and issues further guidance. The calculator site also includes a free waist-to-height ratio calculator, so you can check this standard alongside your AFT score.
