ith a culture deeply rooted in marine activities, the UAE continues to maintain its foothold at sea. The marine and offshore industry is abuzz with constant development, thanks to the country’s strategic location at the crossroads of trade. To further maintain quality and smooth operations, there are a number of authorities, such as the Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA), to regulate the sector and ensure a safe and productive environment for businesses. Besides a spurt in commerce, there is also a rise in vessels dedicated to tourism, sports and entertainment. As Dubai is just a few years shy of transforming into an important maritime capital of the world, the increase in marine traffic recently led to reinforced operational procedures to enhance safety and stay abreast of federal and local legislation and international treaties set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), a global agency established by the United Nations (UN). “We continue to organise anchoring operations as part of our commitment to integrate aspects of maritime safety, safe navigation and operational efficiency along the coastline,” said Captain Khamis Weld Gmeel, Senior Manager, Marine Traffic Operations, Dubai Maritime City Authority. “This is one of the main pillars set towards enhancing the regional

he Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry in collaboration with Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA) recently concluded its participation in the 27th edition of the Shipbuilding, Machinery and Marine Technology expo (SMM 2016). The event was held in the German city of Hamburg from September 6 to 9. Promoting the emirate’s leadership in maritime industry with a pavilion at the strategic maritime exhibition, the trade mission that consisted of 15 officials of Dubai-based shipping and maritime companies, was led by Hisham Al Shirawi, Second Vice Chairman, Dubai Chamber, and Amer Ali, Executive Director, DMCA. The maritime exhibition attracted more than 2,000 exhibitors and over 50,000 visitors looking to stay ahead of new innovations and trends in the sector. The Dubai stand, which featured a virtual reality video of the city and its logistics sectors, saw over 200 visitors on the opening day alone, and Dubai delegates attended 75 one-to-one business meetings with visiting delegates from the maritime industry. Besides attending the five-day exhibition, the delegates participated in six events including a visit to the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and a dinner hosted by Ali Abdullah Al Ahmad, UAE Ambassador to Germany in their honour.

In his welcome address during the Dubai Networking Reception at the UAE Pavilion, Al Shirawi stated that SMM 2016 is a leading global forum for the maritime industry that enables Dubaibased companies to increase their exposure, and promote the emirate’s maritime industry and its strategic location to a global audience. He also highlighted the importance of the maritime sector in Dubai’s world trade, revealing that shipping accounted for 39 per cent of Dubai’s total foreign trade in 2015 with ocean freight trade value amounting to Dh501 billion. Lauding the partnership with DMCA and the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce in organising the trade mission, Al Shirawi

stated that the biennial event in Hamburg is always an incredible learning experience in which it has participated in since 2012. He also lauded DP World in strengthening the global role of the UAE and Dubai in particular as a world-class leader in the operation of large and medium ports through the organisation, which today has a portfolio of more than 65 marine terminals across six continents. Sharing his experience with the trade mission, Rashid Isa Rishi Al Heddi, Group Managing Director of Dubai-based Seamaster Maritime, said: “This finely tuned and organised event was well received by the Hamburg Chamber and various German clients, who were very pleased to see the impressive participation from Dubai. “This certainly has helped raise Dubai’s profile. Also, there were great networking opportunities provided by Dubai Chamber and DMCA authorities, with several business contacts from the industry as we got to discuss future joint ventures with global maritime businesses,” he added. Echoing his view, Gamal Fekry, CEO of Dubai-based Red Sea Marine Management, described the SMM 2016 trade mission as “an excellent opportunity to network and exchange market review and status with significant number of stakeholders in the marine and shipping industry.”

Highlighting ongoing marine trade concerns Seatrade Maritime Middle East provides a global platform to address challenges and prospects The 8th edition of the biennial Seatrade Maritime Middle East (SMME) exhibition and conference, is scheduled to take place from October 31 to November 2, and feature an economic forum session to address the challenges and prospects for the industry in light of future oil price forecasts, the state of the Middle East economy and the effect of the Chinese trade slowdown on the region’s maritime sector, according to a release provided by the orgnanisers. SMME, a part of Dubai Maritime Week, will feature speakers and delegates from international organisations in the high profile 90-minute panel session. According to data released by FocusEconomics, Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region growth continues to be hampered by geopolitical risks and weak global growth, with oil-driven economies most impacted in light of the unstable oil price scenario, with regional consolidation also hampering short-term growth. The online forecast expects inflation at 4.6 per cent in 2016, increasing to 4.9 per cent in 2017. “In its August 2016 update, FocusEconomics’ panel of analysts kept the region’s growth projections stable at a conservative 2.3 per cent

(growing to 3 per cent in 2017), which, if it holds will be the weakest growth rate since the apex of the financial crisis in 2009. This is sounding a warning bell for government and industry leaders across the region, and SMME 2016 will provide a timely and essential platform for discussion as the maritime community looks at ways to mitigate, consolidate and restrategise amidst this prolonged period of uncertainty,” said Chris Hayman, Chairman, Seatrade. Held under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, SMME is the largest maritime event in the regional calendar. Panelists at the opening session include Abdulrahman Essa AlMannai, President and CEO, Milaha; Marcus Machin, CEO, Tufton Oceanic Finance Group; Admiral Mohab Mohamed Mameesh, Chairman and MD, Suez Canal Authority; Tim Power, MD, Drewry; and Jamal Majid Bin Thaniah, Non-Executive Director and Vice Chairman, DP World. According to Hayman, the panelists will debate the impact of China’s slowing trade and the country’s economic stability, amongst other issues that are likely to affect the regional maritime

sector, such as Europe’s refugee and debt crises, US monetary tightening and Brexit. “At the start of 2016, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned that the effect of China rebalancing its economy would continue to impact global economic growth through 2017. However, it also highlighted a gradual improvement of growth rates for some currently ‘distressed’ Middle Eastern economies, which could — in the longer term — see a revival of maritime opportunity in certain locations. “But with other geopolitical issues in play, including ongoing discussions surrounding the need for a production limitation commitment from Russia and Saudi Arabia, which was a major talking point at the recent G20 Summit in China, as well as the impact of the US’ shale oil market on future crude oil prospects, this is a challenging market for the MENA maritime industry at present.” More than 7,000 participants from 67 countries are expected throughout the show, which is set to evaluate current market challenges as well as look at ground-breaking case studies such as Egypt’s Suez Canal expansion, alongside a series of technical forums in association with IMarEST.
