THE PRICE I OF PLAY
Uniforms, equipment, officials and travel add up quickly for Keys athletic programs t may seem like every time you open your email or scroll through social media, you are bombarded with another fundraiser for a local team, and even the most diehard fan might wonder where all that money goes. Inflation hasn’t just hit individuals and families; it’s costing schools and sports teams more. An obvious expenditure is outfitting student-athletes. While some sports can get away with a single uniform for each participant, others require home and away sets. Football uniforms alone can easily cost well over $100 per athlete, and extra sets are needed to account for damage, loss and late additions to the roster. Less expensive materials tend to require more frequent replacement, and even the best-made uniforms eventually wear out. Multiply those costs by an entire roster and the numbers climb quickly. At Key West, Monroe County’s largest high school, athletic director Andrew Freeman said the Conchs spent about $27,000 this year to outfit the football team with two jerseys and one pair of pants per player. “And that was our cheaper brand option,” Freeman said.

The uniform is only the beginning. A single football player’s helmet, shoulder pads, practice pants, girdle and assorted pads and accessories can easily represent another $600 or more in equipment. Helmets, among the most important pieces of protective equipment in football and lacrosse, are unsurprisingly among the most expensive. And the expense does not end with the initial purchase. Helmets must be regularly inspected, reconditioned and recertified when required, with replacements purchased as needed. Baseball and softball batting helmets may be considerably less expensive, but a standard set of catcher’s gear can run $500 to $600, according to Marathon baseball coach Joey Gonzalez. Yet it wasn’t the catcher’s gear that Gonzalez identified as one of his team’s sneakiest budget-busters. It was something far more mundane. “Game balls are literally $12 a ball,” he said. Those baseballs have a short life expectancy. Between games and practices, Gonzalez said the program goes through $3,000 to $4,000 worth of balls each year. Also eating into athletic budgets are the people tasked with keeping those games fair. “A three-man crew is near $500 for the evening,” Gonzalez said. That equates to a whole lot of hot dogs and hamburgers sold at the concession stand to help alleviate the sting. The FHSAA establishes the number of officials required for varsity contests as well as their game fees. A wrestling dual meet may require a
single mat official, while tournaments need more. Other sports require anywhere from two to six officials for a contest, with individual fees varying by sport and additional compensation for travel. For some sports, hosting a game can actually cost more than going on the road. “Referees are our biggest expense at the end of the year,” Marathon basketball coach Jim Murphy said. “It’s cheaper to hop in a van, drive six hours to a game, spend the night and drive home or play again the next day than to host a JV, girls and boys varsity game at home.” Cross country spends very little on protective equipment, with athletes doing their best to pare down the weight they carry. A case of tape, prewrap and a few muscle rollers can last the team for a season, but even the local harriers are not without significant expenses. “It’s actually getting a lot more expensive these days,” Key West cross country coach Keara McGraw said. “Meet entries for large meets run about $300 a team now when they used to be half that.” Then there is the unavoidable reality of competing from a string of islands at the southernmost end of the state; you have to get there. Travel costs are a major budget item, McGraw said. Success can make the bill even larger. When a Keys athlete qualifies for the big show, the entire island chain tends to know about it. What fans might not realize is that flying a single athlete to the state cross country meet in Tallahassee can take a $1,200 bite out of a team's budget, even before hotels and meals are added.
Schools pick up the tab for facility maintenance, administrative costs and some travel expenses, and they often partner with other county agencies to provide physicals and other health-related services. Countless volunteers take tickets, grill burgers and freely give their time in other ways to make local athletics possible. Still, individual programs must find creative ways to pay for many of the expenses that aren't obvious from the bleachers. And the modern athletic budget contains expenses that barely existed a decade ago. Technology has advanced rapidly, and teams hoping to remain competitive increasingly find themselves needing to keep pace. Ten years ago, filming a game on an iPad might have seemed cutting edge. Today, many programs record their contests and upload the footage to video analysis platforms such as Hudl, where software and professional analysis services can break down game film, compile statistics and create team and individual highlight reels. What may sound a little Orwellian to some has rapidly become commonplace in high school athletics, and like nearly everything else associated with playing the game, it comes with a price.

PLAYING IT SAFE From paperwork and training to cooling tubs and AEDs, Keys athletes have layers of protection before they even take the field
F
lorida’s student-athletes may be focused on wins, times and personal bests, but behind every practice and competition is another priority: getting them home safely. Long before the first whistle blows, student-athletes and their families are introduced to that priority via an extensive packet of paperwork. Each year, parents are faced with a substantial stack of forms that must be completed before their child can participate in school athletics. Though the process can seem cumbersome, much of that paperwork and the training accompanying it exists for a reason everyone can agree on, which is keeping athletes safe. Before participating, student-athletes must complete an annual physical evaluation and satisfy other eligibility and safety requirements. Incoming ninth-graders this year were also required to be screened for heart health via an ECG. Local health agencies partnered with Keys schools to provide these free of charge to athletes whose parents did not opt them out of the test, with the aim being to catch any heart-related issues that are often missed with a routine physical. A stethoscope listens for sounds the heart makes such as valve movement or murmurs, while the ECG goes one step further to detect the heart’s electrical signals. Athletes and coaches also complete required educational courses covering potentially serious situations they could encounter on the field or court. The free courses, available through NFHS Learn, cover topics including concussion
recognition, sudden cardiac arrest, heat illness prevention and sportsmanship. Some athletes may find themselves watching familiar material year after year, but the repetition ensures that each season begins with athletes and coaches being reminded how to recognize warning signs, respond appropriately and protect themselves and others. Coaches also maintain CPR and AED training, with many having additional firstaid preparation. At public high schools throughout the Keys, certified athletic trainers provide another important layer of protection at many practices and competitions. In the Keys, perhaps no safety concern is more obvious than the heat. Florida law and FHSAA policy require schools to monitor environmental conditions during outdoor athletics and modify activities when conditions become dangerous. Rather than relying simply on the temperature displayed on a weather app, schools use Wet Bulb Globe Temperature, or WBGT, which accounts for factors including temperature, humidity, wind and solar radiation to provide a better measurement of the heat stress being placed on an athlete. As WBGT readings rise, so do the precautions. At readings below 82 degrees, athletes must receive at least three separate rest breaks per hour. From 82.1 to 87 degrees, those breaks increase to at least four minutes each and chilled hydration must be accessible. Between 87.1 and 90 degrees, activity is limited to two hours, with four separate four-minute breaks
each hour; football players are restricted to helmets, shoulder pads and shorts. Once the WBGT reaches 90.1 to 92 degrees, activity is limited to one hour, protective equipment and conditioning are prohibited and athletes receive five separate fourminute rest breaks. At 92.1 degrees or higher, outdoor athletic activity stops. The Keys’ longest tenured athletic trainer, Luis Leal, says that the teams he works with go beyond the mandated measures to ensure athlete safety. Last week, as Marathon boarded the bus to their 4 p.m. game on turf in Miami, he handed each athlete a 16-ounce water bottle with electrolyte powder. The Dolphins only had one player go down with a muscle cramp, and that was in the final minutes of the game, despite the heat reflecting off the artificial turf. Their opponents, Leal said, were “gassed by the second quarter, and a lot of them went down more than once.” The safeguards don’t end with preventing heat illness. Schools must also be prepared to respond immediately should an athlete experience a heat emergency. Cold-water immersion tubs or other approved rapid-cooling methods must be immediately accessible when required, and per-
sonnel must know how to use them. The guiding principle in a suspected exertional heatstroke emergency is to begin rapid cooling immediately before transportation. The 150-gallon cooling tubs required at athletic sites aren't reserved solely for emergencies. Leal said many football players and cross country runners also take advantage of them for postpractice cooling and recovery. Florida's heat safety requirements are particularly relevant during August, when fall athletes begin practicing and competing in some of the most demanding weather conditions of the year. Other emergencies require similar preparation. AEDs are kept readily accessible for athletic activities, and coaches and other trained personnel are prepared to use them in the event of sudden cardiac arrest. Emergency action plans help schools establish ahead of time who will respond, where emergency equipment is located and what steps will be taken when seconds matter. And let’s not forget the bane of last season’s football contests: lightning. Each school must monitor lightning strikes to assure no one is left outdoors when lightning is close by. “We had to stop for lightning proximity last week multiple times, and during the second week of practices, we had 102 lightning strikes within eight miles in a 30-minute span,” said Leal. “I think that’s a record.” Equipment provides yet
another layer of protection. Football helmets, for example, are routinely inspected and reconditioned according to established safety standards and removed from service or replaced when necessary. Other protective equipment is likewise inspected and replaced as needed. A helmet or piece of protective gear may look like just another part of a uniform to the athlete wearing it, but maintaining that equipment is part of the larger system intended to reduce preventable injuries. Perhaps one of the most important pieces of that system is education. Concussions are not always obvious. Sudden cardiac arrest can occur in athletes who appear healthy. Heat illness can progress rapidly. Teaching athletes themselves to recognize warning signs means safety is not solely the responsibility of the adults standing on the sideline. A teammate who recognizes that something is wrong and alerts a coach or athletic trainer can become an important part of the response. For athletes, many of these precautions eventually become such a routine part of playing sports that they may barely notice them. But the safeguards are there, waiting for the moments coaches, athletes and parents hope never actually occur. And should the unthinkable happen, Florida Keys coaches and athletes are prepared to recognize the danger, respond appropriately and act when every second counts.

Weather wins at Conquistador Kickoff

oral Shores and Key West decided their runners could use a little more preparation before toeing the line for the first time this season, but a contingent of Dolphins was ready to race. Marathon traveled to Larry & Penny Thompson Park in Miami on Aug. 21 for the Conquistador Kickoff, only to meet an all-too-familiar opponent in late-August South Florida sports: the weather. Meet officials initially delayed the races rather than send runners out ahead of approaching storms, then extended the delay as the rain came down. By the time the skies finally cleared around 7 p.m., officials pulled the plug on the meet, sending the Dolphins and their competition home without logging a single official mile. Though Marathon coaches Helena Bursa and Shannon Wiley were disappointed, Bursa wasn't particularly surprised. “Last year it happened twice,” she said. Weather permitting, all three Keys teams will get another shot soon. Coral Shores is scheduled to open its season Aug. 27 at Palmer Trinity School, with Marathon racing at Pine Crest the following day. Key West will take its first mark Sept. 3 at the FNU Invitational – back at Larry & Penny Thompson Park.

ONE UP, TWO DOWN Key West rolls past Boca Raton while Marathon and Coral Shores take lessons from tough losses

ey West football opened the regular season in convincing fashion, returning from Boca Raton with a 30-7 win over the 6A Bobcats. Reef Guyet got things started with a 3-yard touchdown run, followed by a 19-yard Jayson Michel touchdown pass to Kaine Dickerson. Conchs head coach Johnny Hughes was pleased with his team’s performance against the larger-classification opponent, particularly the play of Chace Gaertner. “Chace Gaertner was all over the place,” Hughes said. Gaertner broke free for a pair of long touchdown runs, scoring from 40 and 68 yards out, then picked off a Bobcat pass on defense to showcase his two-way abilities. The 3A Conchs face another larger opponent this week when they host the 5A Tigers of Palmetto. Hughes described Palmetto’s roster as “loaded,” pointing specifically to its sizable offensive and defensive fronts. Given that Key West’s own strength lies in the size and talent of its line, the matchup could be decided up front. “It’ll come down to who wins it in the trenches,” Hughes said. The Conchs will have some added motivation Friday night, when the game will honor Key West football legend George Mira, who recently passed away. MARATHON Marathon, also on the road last week, did not fare as well. The Dolphins made what was likely their longest road trip in 15 years, falling 50-7 to Wildwood. Despite the lopsided score, head coach Sean McDonald saw something in the Wildcats he hopes his own team took home with them. “Wildwood really showed us what we need to do better. They sprinted to the ball; everything was done (at) a hundred miles an hour,” McDonald said. “That’s something we need to do, and seeing it firsthand I think woke us up. We need to be the ones who out-hustle, and that’s something we are capable of doing. We’re going to put in the work and get it done.” Marathon’s lone score came on a Jesus Gonzalez pass to Jeremy Thiboutot, who secured the ball in the end zone. The Dolphins immediately recovered an onside kick and were driving with an opportunity to tie the game when a Wildwood interception halted the momentum. From there, the Wildcats quickly pulled away. Thiboutot led Marathon’s receivers with 33 yards, while seven Dolphins combined for 124 yards on the ground. Defensively, Gabe Harper led the way with five tackles, with Elliott Greenmaki and Garrett Ruddy adding four apiece. Marathon was scheduled to play BridgePrep Village Green this week, but the Bulldogs requested the game be postponed until week nine. The unexpected break gives the Dolphins extra time to prepare for a familiar opponent and an opportunity for some payback. Marathon hosts Oxbridge Academy Sept. 4, looking to avenge a one-point loss to the ThunderWolves in their spring jamboree. “This is a great opportunity to show how far we’ve come,” McDonald said.

CORAL SHORES In Tavernier, the Hi-Tides of Miami Beach rolled in and washed away Coral Shores’ hopes of an undefeated start, handing the Hurricanes a 42-0 loss. “Our kids played hard,” Coral Shores head coach Ed Holly said. “At times, we played well and at times we made mistakes, and those cost us. Our team never gave up and we’re going to grow from this game.” David Beltran delivered a strong offensive performance, rushing for 58 yards on five carries and catching two passes for another 34. Charles Royal added 60 yards on the ground and turned in another strong performance on defense. Holly credited Marco Gudino for stepping in at kicker on short notice. Starter William Judson tweaked his knee during pregame warmups, and Holly elected not to risk worsening the injury. The junior, who spent the offseason honing his kicking skills at camps, is expected to return soon. “It’s just not worth it to risk him getting hurt further,” Holly said. Defensively, Luke Gookins led the Hurricanes with five solo tackles and two assists. “I’m really, really proud of that young man,” Holly said of his free safety. In the end, the Hi-Tides overwhelmed Coral Shores with what Holly described simply as “Dade County speed.” The Hurricanes are likely to see plenty more speed this week, though this time it will arrive from a little farther north. Fort Lauderdale’s Westminster Academy visits Tavernier for a conference matchup, bringing another talented and athletic roster. The Lions recently added a UCLA commit to an already formidable lineup, giving Coral Shores another early-season test. “We look forward to the challenge,” Holly said. “After these two games, we are going to be battle-tested, that’s for sure.”

SET TO CLASH Keys volleyball teams get season underway
T
he Lady Fins volleyball squad opened their season in the win column. Marathon hosted Somerset Silver Palms on Aug. 18, battling through five sets to defeat the Stallions 3-2 and claim the first regularseason victory by a Keys team this year. Two nights later, Marathon traveled to Keys Gate, where things got a little more complicated. The Knights edged the Dolphins 27-25 in the opening set, but a malfunctioning air conditioning
system contributed to an increasingly slippery playing surface inside the gym. With conditions becoming unsafe, coaches agreed to halt the match and finish it later this season. When the two teams meet again, Marathon will resume the match trailing one set to none rather than starting from scratch. In their final contest of the week, the Dolphins fell 3-0 to Westminster Christian and will now turn their attention to some much more familiar competition.
Key West got off to a bumpy start, dropping three matches last week as the young but talented Lady Conchs continue to find their footing. Key West opened Aug. 21 against St. John Paul II Academy and Boca Raton, falling 2-0 in both matches. The following day, the Lady Conchs lost 3-0 to True North Classical Academy, leaving Key West still searching for its first win of the young season. This week brings another slate of tough opponents, but
more importantly, the first head-to-head Keys action of the regular season. Coral Shores made its season debut at home against Marathon on Aug. 25 (results not available at press time), followed one night later by Key West making the short trip up U.S. 1 to take on the Dolphins (results not available at press time).
