MANDOZZI

Jenna has been an integral part of our team’s success this season.”

1 goal assist in the first round of the playoffs

For the past four seasons, Coral Shores senior Jenna Mandozzi has not only been on the Hurricane soccer roster, but in the starting 11. This season, Mandozzi earned a captain’s armband with strong leadership and confidence on the field. She has the remarkable ability to step up her game and shine when the team needs her the most, and she did just that last week in the team’s district playoff match. Mandozzi netted a goal and assisted on another to boost the Lady ’Canes past the first round and earn a semifinal match in the playoffs. Her strong play and focus on competition caught the eye of North Carolina Wesleyan coaches, where she will continue to play next year. For her excellent game play, and steady presence with a competitive edge, Jenna Mandozzi is the Keys Weekly Athlete of the Week.

RAININ’ THREES

Marathon’s Jack Chapman surpasses school record

Consistency is key for Marathon sophomore Peter “Jack” Chapman, who has been inching his way toward the program’s career and single-season 3-point record this year. Chapman was in third place at the start of the team’s Jan. 20 matchup against Miami Sunset. His fourth shot from downtown tied the second-place mark set by Blake Friedman in 2008, and a fifth later in the game gave him a shared piece of the top spot. Chapman’s 69th three of the season tied him up with Steven Hernandez, who set the record in 2019.

Chapman remains tied with Hernandez and Trey Boyanton for the most three-point shots in a single game with 10, and he’s chipping away at the career record of 168, which Hernandez owns outright. The chance to be the undisputed champ in the single-season category set an exciting backdrop for the Fins’ matchup against Key West.

Chapman hit the mark in the first half and added a second to overtake the record and begin adding to his lead, which stands at 71 threes this season with three regular-season contests plus districts to go.

“Our basketball program is very proud of Jack’s accomplishment,” said Jim Murphy, head coach of the Fins. Murphy has coached Chapman since middle school, when the young sharpshooter first appeared in the team’s varsity lineup.

Chapman is all business on the hardwood, making the most of practice time, and he’s known for his work ethic and constant drive for improvement –even outside the school’s gym.

“Outside of practice, Jack has a shooting routine he does daily at home while his dad rebounds for him,” said Murphy. “This consistency to his craft keeps paying off on the court and I have a feeling when all is said and done, he will have the career record for threes.”

That consistency is paying dividends already; Chapman leads the state in threes for any sophomore and is top 10 for all grade levels in Florida.

GOLDEN GIRLS

Four Keys weightlifters bring home seven district titles

In what has become one of the Keys’ top sports, girls weightlifting did not disappoint last week at district championship meets.

Marathon won its fourth district title in as many years in the traditional event, beating eight other teams including Coral Shores, which finished as the runner-up in FHSAA’s 1A District 16. In the Olympic event, the Fins took home the runner-up hardware while Coral Shores finished in third. Key West, which competes in the 2A division, finished right in the middle of the heap, placing fourth out of seven teams in both events.

In addition to the team trophies, athletes won plenty of individual medals and four young women brought home district titles. Marathon’s Justice Lee Isom did the heavy lifting, snatching 170 pounds, clean and jerking 200 and benching 185 to capture both the traditional and Olympic titles in her weight class. The senior strongwoman matched her personal best lifts in two of three areas and is focused on what she will need to do to make more history this season.

Teammate Ella Evans picked up two district golds of her own, outlifting the remainder of her 119-pound weight class. Evans snatched 100 pounds, then went on to clean 140 and bench 150. She and Lee Isom are consistently lifting more than their own body weight, which is often the mark of excellence for girls prep weightlifting. Evans’ feat, given her small stature, was particularly impressive. When her totals were tabulated using an algorithm to determine which athlete is the strongest when their bodyweight is taken into consideration, Evans came out as the top lifter in the traditional event.

The Keys’ final double winner was Vanessa Gabriel of Coral Shores. Gabriel competed in the Unlimited category and combined a 125-pound snatch lift, 180 clean and jerk and a bench of 170 to win dual titles in her division.

Marathon’s Adelle Bainbridge, who competes at 154 pounds, won the Olympic event, combining a 125-pound snatch and a 165-pound clean and jerk to win her first district title.

Both McLeod and Bainbridge secured silvers in their second events. Other top performers include Sofia Konyk and Tinashay Cunningham of Marathon, competing in the same weight class. Konyk claimed second and Cunningham third in both events in the 139-pound division.

Coral Shores’ Lily Ooms brought home a pair of silvers at 183 pounds and Elaina Kerns won second place at 199 in the traditional event. Fellow Hurricanes Mallory Hughes (110), Mira Jones (129) and Caylyn Gwilliam (169) finished third in the traditional event. Teammate Grace Patterson finished second at 169 and Gwilliam was third in the Olympic event.

Marathon’s Alyssa De La Torre (183) finished third in both events and Itsy Gale was third at 199 in the traditional competition to round out the Fins’ top finishers.

Lady Conch Aaliyah McLeod (199), brought home a pair of silver medals from districts. Teammate Sophia Nafrere was the runner-up in the traditional event in the Unlimited category and teammate Monea McLeod was third. Caylee Moore finished third in both events at 129 pounds.

Now that South Florida is on notice that the Keys have what it takes to rack up the medals, the ladies will head to their respective regional competitions. Key West will go to Sebastian River High School Jan. 29 while the Fins and ’Canes head to Keys Gate two days later. In order to move on to the next round, only the district champ is guaranteed a spot. Evans, Lee Isom, Gabriel, Bainbridge and Aaliyah McLeod made their spots in the lineup undeniable, but everyone else had to wait for the rest of the competitions to pan out to find out who the top 10 lifters in each weight class are. This season, every

Keys athlete in the top three made the cut to the next level, and many as deep as seventh place advanced, a testament to the power of Florida’s southernmost districts.

Joining the top three at regionals will be Marathon’s Rilynn Richards (129) and Nivi De La Torre (UNL) in both competitions. For Coral Shores, it will be Nic Giordano (110), Karla Guitierrez (154) and Alyssa Sachs (154) in both events plus Emily Hurt (119) in traditional. Key West’s Althea Olson and Courtney Ward, both 101, earned at-large spots in both events. Tori Gray (183) and Cashana Jecrois (199) did the same. Mayaa Makimaa (119) and Eva Norwood (169) will compete in the Olympic contest.

Athletes who win at regionals earn a ticket to states, with a similar at-large process for those who finish strong but do not win their region outright. Lee Isom and Gabriel are ranked first by large margins in both events for the region. Bainbridge is expected to win the Olympic title and Evans should fare well in traditional, giving Monroe County lots of hope to see athletes representing at the top level again this season. States this year will be at Lakeland’s RP Funding Center on Feb. 11-13.

UPS AND DOWNS

Keys soccer teams see mixed results in district playoff action

Girls

The Lady Conchs traveled to Miami for their first soccer playoff match on Jan. 20. Key West drew St. Brendan School in the 4A District 16 semifinals for a rematch against a team they lost to earlier in the season by a margin of two goals. Key West improved the outcome against the Sabres, but could not seal the win. Madison Kilduff scored just after the first-half water break and the Conchs held the lead through the remainder of the half.

St. Brendan struck early in the second half, tying it up, then both teams battled it out defensively until a St. Brendan shot hit the crossbar, fell onto the goal line, then took an unfortunate spin for the Lady Conchs. The Sabres held on to the lead until the final whistle. Head coach Scott Paul credited goalkeeper Mary Searcy with commanding and aggressive play, which kept the team in the game.

However, Key West’s solid record gave them a second chance, sending them into a regional series on Feb. 5, where they will face Terra Environmental or score another rematch with the Sabres, depending on how the brackets work out.

The Lady Fins’ season ended in round one of the playoffs after drawing second-seeded Westminster Christian as their first opponent. The Fins lost 9-0 to the Warriors in the FHSAA 2A District 16 quarterfinal match held at Westminster on Jan. 20. The loss gave the Dolphins a 3-12-1 record for the season.

The Hurricanes came out of the 3A quarterfinals unscathed after a mercy-rule win over Miami Killian on Jan. 21. Avea Jackson netted a pair of goals, one unassisted and one with a little help from Bayley Catarineau. Jackson then assisted Jenna Mandozzi, who in turn assisted Lela Goodrich on yet another Coral Shores goal. The final four ’Cane goals were netted by Kai Redruello, Kimmy Dubon, Saydie Hendrix and Noelle Engelmeyer, all unassisted. A strong defensive front kept Ally Rosendale from being too busy in goal, but Rosendale had a big save to seal the shutout, and the 8-0 win sent Coral Shores to the semifinals on Jan. 23.

In the semis, the Hurricanes were the underdogs, but made the Royal Lions of LaSalle work for 80 minutes. Coral Shores lost 2-0 to end their run, finishing 5-7-2 after an exciting season in which they defeated county rival Marathon twice and tied Key West in their first match back in November.

Boys

Key West’s strong record afforded them a first-round bye, sending the Conchs straight to the FHSAA Region 4 District 16 semis. The No. 3-ranked Conchs faced the second-seeded Wolves of Terra Environmental Institute on Jan. 23. There, the Conchs lost 2-0, but the team’s 9-7-1 record could give them an at-large spot at the next level. For now, it’s a waiting game for Key West, who will await the state’s Jan. 29 rankings update to see if they make the cut.

For Marathon and Coral Shores, their fate is set. Both teams’ seasons ended in quarterfinal losses last week. Marathon played at Archbishop Carroll Jan. 21, losing 3-0 to the Bulldogs. The Dolphins finished 5-10 this season.

Coral Shores played at Keys Gate the same afternoon, losing to the Knights 3-1. The Hurricanes got a morale boost from some chaos in front of the net, resulting in a Finn Chesler goal, but it was not quite enough to move on. The ’Canes finished 4-15 this season.

AT THE HORN

In a clash on the basketball court between the heart of the Keys and the Southernmost City, it would take every last second to settle the score.

Marathon played Sunset at home Jan. 20, defeating the Knights 51-38. Jack Chapman had the team high with 23 points and Taylor Huff added 13.

The following night, Key West paid a visit. Both teams, struggling with illness, had limited rosters, but the Dolphins hit their stride and led by 10 at the half. Then Key West came alive, chipping away at the deficit as the minutes ticked down and the teams traded the lead. With less than a minute to go, Marathon’s Giorvis Zamora reclaimed the lead and electrified the crowd. But Key West’s

Leandro Batista was unfazed, finding his target from downtown for a buzzer- and Dolphin-beating three. Batista finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Judson Snider scored 22 and Zach Levering owned the paint with 13 rebounds in the 57-55 win.

While the number wasn’t what Marathon looked for on the scoreboard, Chapman provided a bright spot, sinking 13 points and his 70th 3-pointer of the season to claim the Dolphins’ single-season record for threes. Josh Koler added 12. Zamora had seven points, 10 rebounds and four blocks and Briggs Roberts had seven points and seven rebounds in the loss.

Key West went on to play Immaculata-LaSalle on Jan. 23 in their final regular-season game. The

Conchs outshot the Royal Lions 74-60 with the help of James Osborne’s game-high 24 points. Jaxen Cabrera tallied 16 points and Kyan Gladwell added six plus 10 rebounds to bring Key West to 12-10 as they wait for the district bracket to pan out.

Coral Shores improved to 9-5 after a pair of wins. The Hurricanes started the week with a Jan. 19 win against Palm Glades Prep. Sergio Alvear netted 17 points while Brock Stoky and Jordon Brown added eight each in the 65-40 win. On Jan. 23, a visiting Everglades Prep could not match the Hurricanes’ hustle as Tomas Gonzalez scored 12 and Brown and Jack O’Keefe added 11 each. Brown also added six rebounds and three blocks.

Marathon and Coral Shores still have regularseason contests remaining on their schedules, while Key West will have a well-earned rest before the postseason heats up. The first round of districts opens this week, with the girls starting Feb. 2 and the boys one day later.

The Lady Conchs played three games in as many days last week, starting with a road game against St. Brendan School. Jordan Greene scored 14, Damarla Thompson had nine points and nine rebounds and Lilee Gage had a dozen boards in an offensive and defensive showing for Key West, but the Sabres managed to defeat the Conchs 45-37.

The following night, Key West had a shorter drive and better outcome. The Conchs outscored Marathon 48-34. Gage pulled off a double-double with 15 points and rebounds plus three steals against the Dolphins. Thompson added 11 to the team total. Their final contest was at home, where a visiting NSU University school won 66-49 despite 13 points from Gage, nine from Jasminabonu Ibodilloeva and another eight from Reagen Graham. Gage was close to a second double-double with nine rebounds in the hard-fought loss.

Coral Shores hosted Keys Gate in their lone contest of the week. Melanie Estevez tallied 21 points while Julia Miranda and Presley Bagwell added five apiece in the 74-35 loss.

POISE UNDER PRESSURE

Conchs cheer squad shines at state championships

On Jan. 23, Key West’s competition cheer team headed to Lakeland for the FHSAA 1A State Championships. The Conchs earned their spot on the floor by finishing first at regionals earlier this month. Their regional championship ensured the team would go straight to the finals, and when the final tabulations were complete, Key West placed sixth in the small, non-tumbling division for the entire state.

First-year coach Madison Garcia, a former Key West cheerleader, knew she had some big gaps to fill when she took the reins in a season she called “heavily focused on rebuilding.”

Athletes have specific guidelines they need to meet in order to score well. They must perform acrobatic

jumps timed to perfection, dance in sync with one another, hit gravitydefying stunts and build a pyramid, all while keeping their energy level high. Crowd-pleasing is one of the competitive categories, and for Key West, it was one of their best; the Conchs scored a 9 out of 10 on their showmanship and ability to get the crowd cheering along with them.

Deductions are made for dropped stunts, stepping out of bounds, going over the time limit and issues with the pyramid. But a team cannot just do simple stunts to ensure a deduction-free performance; they are also judged on the complexity of the pyramid and difficulty of the stunts. In order to score high, as the Conchs did, a team must not only be near-perfect, but demonstrate high levels of difficulty.

In order to do that, Garcia knew just the trick. “We wanted to create a positive environment for the athletes to grow and learn, and that they did,” she said. “Everyone on the team pushed themselves to meet their highest potential. They learned new, college-level skills and performed better than we could have expected.”

And what does a team returning from a top-10 state championship run do? Garcia said they will immediately go back to work.

“Next season, we are going back to the basics to ensure our technique and difficulty can be maxed out to produce a routine worthy of a state title,” she said. “We’re excited to start training and conditioning this offseason to become even better than the season before.”

OF THE WEIRD

Bus passengers traveling from New York City to Washington, D.C., had a memorable ride on Jan. 19, Fairfax Now reported. The driver was supposed to take passengers from Penn Station to Union Station and Dupont Circle, but instead, he dropped everyone at the Vienna Metro station after police intervened. One passenger said the driver was going really fast and wouldn’t listen to reason; “he screamed that he doesn’t get paid enough and is refusing,” the passenger said. When representatives of the bus company tried to call him, he repeatedly hung up and told passengers he “has family to go home to and doesn’t have time to stop in D.C.” “I’m the captain of this ship,” he said. Passengers stranded at the Metro station were picked up by another bus and refunded their bus fare.
