Islamorada Village Manager Ted Yates couldn’t believe the turnout as he stood before a group of local leaders inside the Islamorada Fish Club on Jan. 11 for a state of the village address. As former mayor of Twinsburg, Ohio, Yates said it was something he always did to showcase operations, highlight staff and report on the past year and what’s ahead.
But a state of the village address hasn’t been commonplace in the village in recent memory — a byproduct of managers coming and going for various reasons. Roughly a year ago, the Islamorada dais was dealing with the unexpected resignation of then-manager Greg Oravec, who lost his appetite for the job after six months. By Aug. 1, 2022, the council’s selection in Yates got underway.
With a manager settled, digging into the issues and embracing the community, the village is primed for a busy 2023.
“I expected this to be a nice turnout, but I didn’t think it would sell out,” Yates said.
Upon being selected as the next village manager, Yates and Henry Rosenthal, vice mayor at the time, negotiated the village manager contract that included a $200,000 salary, $15,000 for moving expenses and health benefits equating to $125 per pay period for his spouse, children and himself.
In a bid to better recruit and retain employees, one of the main focuses for Yates’ first months in office was health insurance for employees, and specifically their families.
Yates told attendees he negotiated a lower insurance rate with the intention of offering something similar for employees. Village employees paid around $40 a month to cover themselves, but costs escalated to $811 if they wanted to insure their families. That wasn’t affordable for hourly employees, leaving them with a choice to not cover their loved ones. Yates said that wasn’t the way to retain and recruit staff.
“We were able to renegotiate our contract for health insurance. We were able to lower that family rate for employees to $115,” Yates said. “Long term, when we look at our overall recruitment, this is going to make a big difference in our operations.”
A village planning department headed by Dan Gulizio spent the past year dealing with dwindling building permit allocations and a number of code irregularities and inconsistencies. Yates said they recently restructured the department and created a planning director position. Late last year, the village hired Jennifer DeBoisbriand to fill that position. She spent two decades in planning and economic development in Massachusetts before coming to Islamorada. In addition, Yates said he wants to bring in an in-house engineer.
“It could make the village more efficient to process and review plans,” he said. “It will help with all the development going on.”
Yates said Gulizio and staff have a number of fixes to the village’s code, with some proposals going before the village council on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 5:30 p.m. at Founders Park Community Center. One proposal deals with providing a set of guidelines for farmers markets operating in the village, which include locations where they’re allowed and what constitutes a flea market. Another confronts accessory structures being used for business activities on property in residential areas.
Yates said the planning department and he continue to face challenges with the village’s 52 remaining building permit allocations. A little over 605 allocations were distributed the last 20 years. A special meeting is slated for Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m. at Founders Park Community Center to discuss the matter.
Yates also touched on vacation rentals and new software used to track down illegal rentals. So far, the software program, known as Rentalscape, has generated $114,000 in fines. Yates said it’s not the “end-all-be-all” to fixing the illegal vacation rental issue. Rather, the software is one tool that helps code enforcement start the investigation on short-term rentals that aren’t a part of the village’s rental program.
Founders Park, one of the village’s crown jewels, will see its dog park undergo renovations. At Key Tree Cactus Preserve, work is underway to install bathrooms. Among the other departments highlighted were the Islamorada Fire Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the finance department, clerk’s office, public works, IT, human resources and environmental resources.
Key Largo residents living near the proposed 7-Eleven development — at the current Anthony’s clothing store — have traffic safety fears and say that it could result in more accidents. A representative working on behalf of the developer said the gas station would only collect traffic going in and out of the Keys and not add more vehicles.
A Jan. 5 virtual community meeting hosted by county planning staff and the developer’s agent, Jason Green, was required before the county planning commission takes up a major conditional use request sometime in the next 45 to 120 days. Owners Archer and Daniel Barry are seeking to transform the clothing store at MM 98.2 to a 7-Eleven convenience store with 11 fueling stations. The application was submitted to the county in February 2022.
Green, who presented the project on behalf of the applicant, noted that the 7-Eleven sits on a larger site in comparison to nearby gas stations. As a result, he said accessibility to the gas station and maneuvering in and out of the property will be easier in comparison to visiting others.
Plans currently show four one-way driveways to enter and exit the property. A previous proposal showed four two-way driveways. Green said the Florida Department of Transportation believed it was safer to reduce conflict points on U.S. 1 and eliminate any traffic hazards that some people were worried about during the early project stages.
“The design was to really create opportunities for people to see the site, slow down and make those safe turning movements into it rather than a jerky turn off that backs up traffic,” Green said.
He went on to add that gas stations with convenience stores capture traffic differently than a clothing store.
“It’s not a destination. People don't drive from Miami or drive from Key West to go to a gas station, unlike the existing use which is retail use, which is a destination,” he said. “Gas and convenience stores are not; they’re pass-by.”
Grand Street resident Rosemary Donnelly voiced the difficulties her family, friends and neighbors face trying to cross U.S. 1 from their street to head south. She fears a 7-Eleven will bring more congestion to the area. Donnelly has two children

who cross the road in order to head south for class at Coral Shores High School.
“I’m stressed every morning,” she said. “I’m stressed when my elderly neighbors have to cross to go south.”
Buck Donnelly has lived in the neighborhood across from the proposed 7-Eleven for roughly 20 years. Donnelly, too, shared his unease when cars cross U.S. 1 from Grand Street, as those entering the neighborhood and crossing northbound traffic have a hard time seeing oncoming traffic.
“It’s so incredibly obscured,” he said. “You have to pull out so far onto oncoming traffic that your body is 8 feet past the white line where your car should be stopped.”
Donnelly said he’s been involved in two accidents while witnessing multiple others.
“We cannot put the safety of our citizens, our community, our family members, staff of our businesses and our customers in jeopardy because someone wants to have another convenience store that’s going to make them money in this area,” he said.
John Kocol owns property in the area of the proposed project. He, too, has witnessed collisions from people trying to pull off of U.S. 1. He urged the county and the developer to seek deceleration lanes so motorists can slowly and safely exit the highway. Documents by the applicant show that a deceleration lane is currently being reviewed by FDOT, but it’s not guaranteed.
“I think you’ll have a lot of problems with collisions here. Please make it safe if you think you’re going to approve this,” Kocol said.
The planning commission will need to take up the matter between now and March with the completion of the community meeting. Before the planning commission takes it up, the county’s Development Review Committee will discuss the major conditional use request on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
A separate element to the 7-Eleven proposal is a variance request to reduce the required separation distance for curb cuts from 245 feet to roughly 150 feet. That request will go before the planning commission on Jan. 25.
Bonnie Barnes, the executive director for the Keys History & Discovery Center, is stepping down from her position at the end of this month.
“I enjoyed my year, helping to serve as an intermediary updating systems, bringing new programs and fiscal priorities to the forefront while preparing the museum for its next phase,” she said in an announcement on Jan. 12. “I am incredibly proud of the work we have achieved together.”
Rich Russell, board chair for the Florida Keys History & Discovery Foundation, said Barnes brought tremendous energy and innovation to the Keys History & Discovery Center.
“The Summer Scholars interns cataloged thousands of materials in our collection. It was a very productive program that we plan to offer again. Plans are also underway to develop additional exhibits that will engage a variety of audiences in creative new ways,” he said.
The Florida Keys History & Discovery Foundation has retained consultant Vivian Morrison to work with the board of directors to facilitate operations on an interim basis and assist in the search to identify new leadership.
Barnes is looking forward to pursuing new opportunities that inspire her passion for history and marketing.

Agrowing migrant crisis in the Florida Keys is garnering attention among federal and state leaders in 2023. More resources to the Keys, per recent action by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, are providing relief for local law enforcement and bringing added benefits of more road and water patrols.
Coast Guard crews and U.S. Customs & Border Protection agents, with help from local law enforcement, were inundated with migrant interceptions on the water and landings on Keys soil to start the new year. Since late December, more than 700 migrants from Cuba and Haiti have reached the Florida shores. And since the new fiscal year started last October, Coast Guard crews have intercepted and sent back close to 5,000 Cuban migrants on the water — on pace to smash the previous year’s record of 6,182.
While reports of landings along the island chain’s shore calmed in recent days — high winds and seas and a border policy change from President Joe Biden’s administration could be playing a role — added resources are ready to handle any incoming landings.
Gov. Ron DeSantis’ issuance of a 60-day state of emergency on Jan. 6 also brought the Florida National Guard’s activation to assist with increased landings as far south as Dry Tortugas and north to the Upper Keys. Two dozen officials with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, roughly 20 Florida Highway Patrol troopers and 20 Florida Fish & WIldlife Conservation officers from various parts of the state were sent to the Keys. FWC also brought the 42-foot vessel “Fearless” with three crew members and the 85foot vessel “Gulf Sentry” with six crew members to assist agencies.
Additional resources are helping the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, which has responded with deputies to landings up and down the Keys for many months. Sheriff Rick Ramsay said that’s allowing deputies to respond to calls in the community as Florida Highway Patrol troopers deal with the migrant landings.
“The boots on the ground are helping. The National Guard is doing a good job,” Ramsay said. “They have a Black Hawk flying offshore looking for and identifying and intercepting migrants before they make landfall. With a strong ground presence and air element, we’re going to send a mes-

sage to third world countries that now is not a good time to come. You will get intercepted and sent back.”
Extra troopers in the Keys mean more law enforcement on the road. Ramsay said troopers in cars, SUVs and on motorcycles are also staying busy dealing with speeders and other traffic infractions.
“The bad is we’re dealing with an increase in migration. The good thing is we have more resources here to help us with response and visibility.”
Ramsay credited the work of the Coast Guard and Customs & Border Protection with the resources they’ve had to deal with the crisis. He also commended DeSantis, U.S. Sen. Rick Scott and Coast Guard Rear Admiral Brendan McPherson for infusing more manpower to deal with the landings.
DeSantis, in a recent news conference, said the Coast Guard requested state assistance to handle the vast number of vessels coming to shore. DeSantis, a Republican, said he wanted to mitigate the damage from what he called Democrat Biden’s “disastrous border policies.” DeSantis also said the state will remove migrant vessels from Keys properties for free.
U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio recently visited the Keys to witness the recent surge in migrants arriving from Cuba and Haiti and the response among federal, state and local officials. He joined the Coast Guard’s air operations and sat down with leaders from the various agencies. He also voiced criticism of the Biden administration’s “lax border security measures.”
“When migrants arrive, state governments, local communities and other emergency personnel must spend valuable time, labor and resources to provide medical care, personnel processing and other critical space to look after hundreds of migrants that land unannounced and demand immediate attention. This diversion of resources hamstrings local and state efforts to assist Americans in need of help,” Rubio wrote in a letter to Alejandro Mayorkas, Department of Homeland Security secretary.

For makers and creators of arts and crafts, there is a Saturday in the second week of January in the Upper Keys where they can get together and showcase them to thousands of visitors all in one event
Under beautiful shady oaks, the items attendees found at the 39th annual Art under the Oaks ran the gamut from handmade jewelry and artwork to books and candles, all original. Vendors of the festival are required to showcase original arts and crafts.
On Jan. 14, San Pedro Catholic Church grounds in Plantation Key were converted into a meandering park-like pathway lined with friendly creators who were happy to discuss their oeuvres.
One such vendor was Pan African Arts, featuring Eddie Osborne, a crafter of traditional African musical instruments. He displayed lamellophones, xylophones, rattles and kazoos made from gourd. As to why he likes coming to Art Under the Oaks: “I like interacting with people and I meet a lot of interesting people from different cultural backgrounds.”

Strong defensive play and two crafty goals propelled the Lady ’Canes to a victory over Florida Christian, 2-0, on senior night on Jan. 13. Ali Beth Wilson put the ’Canes ahead with a header from a corner kick by Kai Redruello. Then, defender Noelle Engelmeyer made a long pass to Redruello for a picture perfect finishing goal. “The team plays like a team; they are great at moving the ball through the middle and distributing to the outside wings. The defense played smart, only allowing three shots on goal,” said coach Evie Engelmeyer. During halftime, eight seniors were recognized as their families joined them on the field: Katelyn Gilman, Kelly Ramos, Edy Kemmer, Melani Valdes, Isabella Dick, Joey Eysenbach, Ashley Jans and Emily Murphy. The Hurricanes, 8-3, will head to LaSalle on Jan. 19 for the final regular season game. The Lady ’Canes are third in the district behind Palmer Trinity and Somerset South Homestead. A win over LaSalle would catapult the Lady ’Canes to second place. The Lady ’Canes have scored 35 goals this season.

Marathon, Coral Shores boys enjoy mid-season runs; Lady Conchs earn first win
The Lady Fins added two wins and a loss to their record last week with a 55-20 defeat over Florida Christian on Jan. 10. Abriana Marshall had the game high total of 13 points, inching closer to 200 on the season, and Aniyla Hawkins scored 10. Marathon lost to Horeb on the 12th, then turned their week back in the right direction with a 50-44 win over St. Brendan on Jan. 13.
Girls district playoffs begin on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Marathon and Coral Shores will battle within the 3A District 16 bracket while Key West will face 4A teams for a chance to move on to the state series.
Head coach Jarrod Mandozzi was pleased with the in-county win. “There’s definitely no better place to win than there in all of my experience,” he said. “The crowd is so into it, crazy things are always happening in games there with calls. … It’s just an amazing rivalry.”
irls basketball action is heating up in the Keys with just two weeks until postseason action begins. Two Monroe County teams faced one another on Jan. 10 when Key West earned its first win of the season against Coral Shores. The Lady Conchs beat the ’Canes 38-24 before losing to Mater Lakes on Jan. 14.The winning didn’t stop there for the ’Canes. On Jan. 12, they took down Palmer Trinity to seal a four-game winning streak. Holmes dropped 27 points, going 9 for 14 shooting with 13 rebounds and 2 steals as well. St. Aubin scored 10 points and 10 rebounds and Allen Perez was good for 14 while going 4 for 5 from the three-point line.
Mandozzi’s team looks to be coming together well right in time for districts. Though they have some things to work on, he praised their overall performance, saying, “I’m extremely pleased with the way we’re closing games out. We’ve really been taking it to teams in the second half of games, but I’d like to see us start better.”
Conch sophomore Kameron Roberts led the drive for Key West, scoring 16 points and grabbing 5 rebounds against the ’Canes. Key West played Hialeah Educational Academy on Jan. 13. Roberts had the team high again with 11 points and 7 rebounds, and Watson Chery pulled down 10 rebounds in the

James Osborne scored 21 points and Roberts added 15 in the win.
Marathon’s boys enjoyed a resounding win against Redland Christian on Jan. 10. In the 61-12 victory, senior Oscar Garcia led the scoring with a career-high 17 points. Xavier Grant added 10 points, two rebounds and three steals. The lopsided win allowed coach Kevin Freeman to play his entire bench, all of whom took advantage of the play time and scored.
Two nights later, they beat Horeb Christian 50-37 for the second time this season. Marathon was without freshman Daeshawn Holmes, who is recovering from a concussion.
“Our two seniors, (Oscar) Garcia and Fisher Coleman-Sayer really stepped up and played an all-around good game,” said Freeman. “Our defense really stepped up in the fourth quarter and limited Horeb to only 3 points.”
Coleman-Sayer had 16 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks against Horeb, and Garcia had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. The Fins went on to defeat Colonial Christian on Jan. 13, 61-27, for a three-game win streak.
Coach Freeman told the Weekly that the home stretch looks promising for the Fins. “We are playing a little better than we did before the Christmas break,” he said. “Players are settling into their roles and we are just trying to get better every day.”

Pirate attacks on American ships sailing in foreign waters were nothing unusual in 1822. The Ann Maria, from New York, was victimized by pirates operating in Cuban waters twice, by the same pirates, between September and November. The Ann Maria was rescued the second time by the U.S. schooner Alligator, one of the ships assigned to the famed anti-piracy West Indies Squadron.
The Ann Maria was not the only American ship liberated that day Among others being held was the schooner Iris and it was the desperation of the master of the Iris, Freeman Mayo, that brought the Alligator to the pirate cove on Nov. 9.
On Nov. 4, 1822, the Iris sailed about 40 miles off the port city of Matanzas, Cuba. At about 8 a.m., Mayo observed two schooners sailing out from the coast. As they approached, one of the schooners fired its 18-pounder twice, sending cannonballs over the deck of the Iris as a request for her to lower her sails and await company. When Mayo complied, a crew of six men boarded. They were armed with pistols, cutlasses and long knives and announced themselves as pirates. To impress the point, when they boarded, the pirate captain fired his pistol over the head of Mayo.
The pirates held Mayo and his crew hostage while they searched the ship for potential booty. However, when the pirates attempted to crew the ship and sail away with their prize, they could not perform the task. To help the pirates, they brought half the hostages back on deck to man the lines and sails. Once they did, the pirate captain sailed the Iris closer to the Cuban coast and dropped the anchor about a quarter-mile off the beach. When the sails were dropped and secured, and the anchor was resting on the bottom, the pirates forced the master and crew into the forecastle’s confines (the upper deck’s forward part).
According to an account delivered by Mayo, they were crammed inside the forecastle without food, water or “barely enough air for them all to breathe.” They also, apparently, found Mayo’s clothes when they raided his quarters, and when they did, they played dressup. At midnight, Mayo was separated from his crew and brought to one of the ship’s cabins. The pirates beat him with their pistols, choked him, and threatened to end his life. Though they returned Mayo to the forecastle, they were not done and only exchanged him for the cook and cabin boy, whom they beat and terrorized, too.
When the sun rose on Nov. 5, the Iris sailed about five miles away from Point Yeacoa, and that night, the pirates robbed the master and crew of all their clothing, money and watches. The next day, they sailed five miles into a bay and anchored near another schooner captured by the pirates the same day as the Iris. There, the pirates began to offload the ship’s cargo, including 100 boxes of

axes, about 40 casks of nails, anchors, rigging, two compasses and about 300 pounds of bread and other food staples. Next, the pirate captain ordered his crew to search the schooner for one more hour in case they missed anything of value and, after that, to kill the ship’s master and crew and burn the ship.
Mayo pleaded with the captain to let his men live, give them a long boat, some bread and water and allow them to make their way to the Florida coast. The captain refused, telling Mayo that he would spare none of them. Fortunately for Mayo, one of the other pirates tried to talk the captain out of his decision. That pirate was told to do his duty, or he would be killed, too. Mayo then proposed going to Matanzas to raise money to ransom their lives and ship. After a brief hesitation, the captain agreed to give him three days to come back with $6,000 ($7,000 in some accounts), or he would continue with his plan.
The captain brought Mayo seven miles offshore of Matanzas and set him off in a long boat. Mayo arrived at the port at 1 p.m. and called on the governor to help, but he refused. Also, American merchants at the port refused to help, telling Mayo that negotiating with the pirates would set a bad precedent. At the dock, a group of American shipmasters agreed to help by assembling a force of their crews to fight the pirates. Captain Wilkins of the pilot boat schooner Ploughboy from Philadelphia offered his ship and services. A canon, an 18-pounder, was loaded onto the ship, as were 50 muskets, pistols and cutlasses.
About 50 men had gathered near the Ploughboy, but as it became closer to the time to embark on their mission, some of the men began to get cold feet, back out and discourage others from the operation. Unsure of how to proceed, Mayo saw potential help arrive when the U.S. schooner Alligator sailed into port on Nov. 8. After the ship arrived, Mayo boarded and pleaded his case to Lt. William Allen. Shortly after that, the Alligator, followed by the Ploughboy, sailed away from Matanzas and into a pirate fight.
Avast ye! In next week’s edition of Florida Keys History with Brad Bertelli, the story of the pirate fight and the fate of Lt. Allen will be explored. Until then hearties, yo ho ho!
Oh, the weather outside was frightful. Well, at least by the standards of the Florida Keys, where temperatures for the Christmas and New Year week dropped to the 50s and 60s and the sun took a few days off.
But that didn’t stop visitors from piling into the island chain, filling hotels and frustrating drivers with traffic on U.S. 1.
A busy holiday week seems to have foretold a busy winter tourism season, as the Keys remain packed with visitors and community calendars continue to fill with events. But still, the crowds and room rates aren’t as elevated as they were in 2021, a year that one local tourism expert called “an anomaly” with how “psychotically busy we were,” said Jodi Weinhofer, president of the Lodging Association of the Florida Keys and Key West.
“I don’t think this year, on any level, will match 2021,” she added. “But we’re doing really well. Our rates are higher than in 2019, but they’re nowhere near last year, which is fine because that simply wasn’t sustainable. And it’s better overall for the destination because no one wants it to be that crowded.”
Also, Weinhofer pointed out, “Think about how many people first got here in 2021 and have nothing to compare it to.”
The cold snap to start the week kept water enthusiasts on land, affecting water sports and fishing charter activities throughout the Keys. But Judy Hull, Islamorada Chamber of Commerce executive director, said that although there were a few days where visitors couldn’t enjoy the water with the cold spell, the holiday season for businesses in the village was nothing short of spectacular.
She added that the Visitors Center in Islamorada hadn’t seen a dip yet since the new year.
“Usually there will be a rush the first of January and see a little dip in the middle of the month, and pick back up in February. I always look at Valentine’s Day as the peak,” she said.
Elizabeth Moscynski, Key Largo Chamber of Commerce president, said the weeks leading up to and after the holiday were bustling in the northernmost Keys.
“Hotels were almost at full capacity. Our visitor center was hopping. We were seeing hundreds of guests a day,” Moscynski said. “We have not seen these amounts of folks in years.”
Isis Wright, owner of Italian Food Company restaurants in Key Largo and Islamorada, said the tables were filled with patrons from Christmas through the opening weeks of 2023.
“We’re happy to see some of our winter regulars and many out of town guests,” Wright said. “Volume is back to pre-holiday patterns this week. Our restaurants served many groups and large families – really great to see so many families traveling together and sharing great memories with us. It was energizing.”
New Year’s Eve saw the highest occupancy throughout the Keys, with 96% of all lodging establishments occupied, with an average daily rate of $806, STR reports. Throughout the week, between Dec. 22 and Dec. 31, average daily room rates more than doubled, starting at $347 on Dec. 22 and ending at $806 on Dec. 31.

The start of high tourism season in the Keys was a welcome return to normal
Art isn’t created in a vacuum. You look at the artwork and you might wonder what was going on with the artist or society at that time.
It has often been debated when looking at powerful art: did the art come first or the environment that inspired it? Many times, a piece of art is a window into a whole world. The artwork reflects something of the artist and that time. Francisco Goya and Pablo Picasso, even though they lived nearly a century apart and had dramatically different styles, both created important masterworks showing the disasters of Spanish wars and how cruel war was. Andy Warhol’s work reflected a very commercialized world — this translated into some of his most famous pop art works.
The point is artists most often paint what they experience, see and feel in their environment. Here, we have a tropical island environment, so most of our paintings will have some sort of island influence, if not in the subject matter, perhaps by the colors or techniques we use.
This can be somewhat referred to eloquently in the way the ancient Greeks did – the muses. The muses were ethereal goddesses who inspired the arts, science and literature. In the Upper Keys, there are two muses that come to mind. In Key Largo, it’s the Christ of the Deep and in Islamorada it’s Alligator Reef Lighthouse. Both these manmade monuments have inspired artists to paint their own versions of these iconic landmarks.
The unofficial muse of Key Largo is the Christ of the Deep or the Christ of the Abyss. The sculpture is that of Jesus Christ with his arms stretching outward and welcoming. The sculpture was made by Italian sculptor Guido Galletti and is originally called “Il Christo Degli Abissi.” It is one of three statues made from the sculptor’s mold. The first can be found in the Mediterranean Sea off of Genoa, Italy. The one in Key Largo was donated by the Cressi family of Italy. In 1961 they donated the piece to the Underwater Society of America, which donated it to the Florida State Park Service in recognition for the creation of America’s first underwater park.
The statue is roughly 9 feet tall, made of bronze weighing approximately 4,000 pounds; it sits on a concrete base in water that has a depth of about 25 feet. It has become a symbol of Key Largo. Like any good cultural icon, the Christ of the Abyss can be found on postcards and shirts. The beauty of the sculpture has been a muse to artists who live and visit Key Largo.
Heading to Islamorada, people come across another Upper Keys icon, the Alligator Reef Lighthouse. The lighthouse has been around for a while — it was first operational in 1863, a time so early that it was nearly 50 years before Flagler’s railroad connected the mainland to Key West. With something around that long, how can it not be a muse to those who see it? What type of lighthouse is Alligator Reef Lighthouse, exactly? It is a skeletal, octagonal, pyramidal iron piling tower. The keeper’s dwelling was on a platform toward the bottom base. It was automated in 1963 and stands at 136 feet. The lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Alligator Reef Lighthouse feels like it has always been there, like a guardian watching over Islamorada. It was through efforts by metal artisan “Lighthouse" Larry Herlth that
the beautiful, smaller replica sculptures of the lighthouse were created and can be seen around Islamorada today. Herlth, an open water swimmer, championed the idea of swimming to Alligator Reef Lighthouse, which has now become “The Swim for Alligator Lighthouse.” The Friends of the Pool, a nonprofit that organizes the 8-mile swim, now has ownership over the lighthouse and is charged with restoring this important symbol of Islamorada.
Ask any local artist – pick your favorite one – and they probably have photographed, drawn, painted or sculpted the Christ of the Abyss or the Alligator Reef Lighthouse. Why wouldn’t they? The sculpture and the lighthouse are symbols of their environment. It is part of our culture and permeates the minds of Florida Keys locals and visitors alike, who keep asking to see it in art form again and again.
The
Local artist Valerie Perreault is no stranger to big feelings, bold takes and personal evolution. Just shy of one year after closing her Islamorada studio to focus on the next sector of her art’s expression, she re-emerged in Islamorada for a solo show at Roberto Russell Galleries in Islamorada. Her latest works — 28 hand-painted mosaic collages known as “Island Déjà Vu” — showcase the beauty of her life in the Florida Keys, authentically experienced and beautifully immortalized.
To create in this new medium, the visual artist hand-painted larger sheets of canvas paper, which she then cut into paper “tiles.” These were then arranged and affixed onto a cardboard backer, creating pieces of work as complex, whimsical and joyful as life on these islands often is.
“I feel like the texture and the depth of the piece draws the viewer into the painting, while also feeling fragmented in the way memories can be layered and fragmented,” the artist said of this line of work.
Indeed, with names like “The House With The Carved Wood,” “Learning the Ukulele” and “Cha Cha Cha,” the works are deeply personal to Perreault, while also triggering memories in her viewers. To them, in her artist’s statement, she wrote, “It is my hope that my work washes over you like a poem — that it both informs and delights, while creating a sense of rediscovering a memory, a place or a feeling.”
At her Jan. 12 opening reception, it felt like all of Islamorada was there to greet the artist and her newest expressions. Kaiyo Grill catered, while Leah Sutter accompanied with her music. The gallery bustled with champagne and smiles, memories shared and new ones created.
Hugs were also overflowing, with collectors, friends, fellow artists and fans coming to share in Perreault’s success and joy. Some have been supporting Perreault since her “popsicle stick” days; about them, she said, “They’ve been following my work from day one, they’ve seen the whole wild journey, and, in a lot of ways, I feel like we are making the path together.”
The show has been extended and will run through March 24. Email Perreault at valerieperreaultart@gmail.com to check out the new pieces.
Hi friends! Reef the fox here with your weekly “Reef’s Report.” I have some very exciting news to share. You may have already seen it, but we had a skunk stay with us for two nights last week.
Reef is a red fox that was saved from a fur farm. He now lives in Key Largo with his human, Nicole Navarro.
Yep, you read that right, a skunk. I was not allowed to see the skunk. I was not allowed close enough to even get a whiff of the skunk. Now you might think it was rude of my mom to not introduce us but I have to be honest. I have a tendency to, uh, “play” with small wild-looking animals a little too much — to the point they stop playing permanently. So it was in the best interest of Squirt the skunk that we did not meet. I heard he came from someone that could no longer care for him and got a home at one of the best places around, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm in Key West.
My mom’s friend that runs a sanctuary in Deltona, 101 Paws and Claws, called my mom a few weeks ago wondering if we could help. So, mom called the Sheriff’s Farm, who said they would be happy to give Squirt the skunk a home. Then, the problem was getting him here, so my mom asked her friend, Andrew, who works for Sailor’s Choice in Key Largo, if he could pick him up on his way back from visiting family in Orlando this weekend and he said “yes.” My mom always says it takes a village in animal rescue, and boy oh boy, now I see what she means. What an amazing little community we live in that really rallies together to help save animals and get them to happy homes.
All of the foxes here at Pawsitive Beginnings really enjoyed the cool weather we had this past weekend. We didn’t spend much time inside the house because it was our kind of climate. Did you know that in the wild, red foxes (like us) can survive in temperatures well below zero degrees? This 45-degree low we hit last Sunday was nothing compared to what we can handle.
Events around town: This Saturday, Jan. 21, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m, Key Largo Elementary School will be having its second annual Carnival. This event is put on by the KLS Parent Teacher Association and this year they will have mechanical rides, games, ponies, gigantic slides, rock climbing walls, burgers and more. Admission is $5 per person. An unlimited ride bracelet is $20. Remember, it’s a cash-only event. Sounds like a good time to me but I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t allow me to climb the rock wall, or would they?
Anywho, that’s all for this week. Keep up with all of the foxes here by visiting our website, pawsitivebeginnings.org.
Until next time, Reef, over and out!
Conan is a handsome boy with stunning markings and a great grin — he always looks like he’s ready for his next formal event, wearing his “tuxedo.” Conan is a 4-year-old American bulldog who loves to play with a ball. He loves games, is an active boy and loves outdoor activities. Conan is one of the dogs referred to by MarrVelous Pet Rescues as our unicorns. We consider these dogs as rare and beautiful beings, who at some point were failed by people. They have exhibited behavioral issues but have now been through an extensive rehabilitative training program and are ready for a home where they can continue to thrive and receive structure and support. MPR will cover continued training and support as needed to give these deserving dogs a second chance. Apply at www.mprescues.org.

A carnival-goer climbs the rock wall during the first Key Largo School Carnival on March 5, 2022. KEYS WEEKLY FILE PHOTO
Upper Keys residents and visitors can expect some tunes and plenty of family fun in the coming days. A music series begins in Islamorada, while a carnival returns to Key Largo. And don’t forget the Florida Keys’ premier boat show returning to Islamorada. Meanwhile, a local band sails into Key Largo with some musical guests.
MISHKA KICKS OFF BEATS ON BAY
Islamorada’s Beats on the Bay music series kicks off on Friday, Jan. 20 at Founders Park Amphitheater with Bermuda singer-songwriter Mishka. This free concert begins at 6:30 p.m. Mishka is an iTunes best new artist in the singer-songwriter category. His lyrics and sound are deep reflections of the reggae roots soul and Caribbean culture. He’s shared the stage with Jimmy Buffet, the Wailers and Julian Marley. The concert goes until 9:30 p.m. Food, drinks, art vendors and lawn games will also be available.
Set for Friday-Sunday, Jan. 20-22, dealers from the Keys and South Florida will make their way to the sportfishing capital of the world for the Island Boat Show. Local boat dealers will be joined at the Island Community Church grounds, Mile Marker 83.4, bayside, by marine-related businesses and various nonprofits. Attendees can view some of the newest boats on the market and
check out fishing seminars, as well as see some local artwork. There will also be food trucks and a silent auction, a raffle and more. A $10 donation (those under 18 are free) gets people in for all three days of the boat show, so bring the family and friends.
The Florida Keys Community Concert Band invites the public to the Saturday, Jan. 21 concert, "Sailing Away to Key Largo," at the Murray Nelson Government Center’s Peace Park. Set to begin at 4 p.m., this family-friendly concert features lively pirate sea shanties and familiar Florida-themed music. The Mangrove Swamp Band will be special guests. There will even be a Conch-blowing contest, so pack a picnic basket and a blanket or chairs, load up the family and fur babies for this hour-long musical treat.
Key Largo School’s second annual Carnival is bringing back the kids’ rides, music, food and more on Saturday, Jan. 21 at Key Largo School, MM 104.8, oceanside. Open to the public, entry is $5 per person (those under 3 years old get in free). An unlimited ride bracelet is $20. This is a cash-only event. The festivities begin at 11 a.m. and end at 3 p.m.
The Fred Moyer Jazz Trio will take the stage on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Coral Shores High School. This trio of piano, bass and drums play note-by-note transcriptions of some of the greatest jazz ever written. Tickets can be purchased at floridakeysconcerts.com or at the door on the night of the concert.

The Professional Association of Dive Instructors (PADI) is the primary scuba certifying agency in the world. They have scuba courses ranging from basic open water class through professional scuba instructor. A diver interested in making scuba diving a career would follow the PADI path to become what’s considered a “professional.” That is a divemaster or an instructor. A diver would need one of these certified ratings in order to work as a diver in the industry.
Once the decision is made to change your life and work in a paradise somewhere in the world, you need to start your path to become a professional. It begins as an certified open water diver. The next step is to obtain your advanced diver certification. This class
is the owner, captain and instructor at Islamorada Dive Center and Florida Keys Dive Center. He specializes in scuba, rebreather, spearfishing and captaining in the Florida Keys.
Your next step is “rescue diver.” This class is an incredible learning experience for any diver regardless if they are going pro or not. It teaches divers rescue scenarios that could happen while diving and how to handle them. The amount of “dive confidence” you’ll come out with after this class is amazing.
Once you’ve completed your rescue course you are now ready to start your professional-level courses. The first step is the divemaster course. The divemaster course will transform you from a passionate diver into a dive leader. Expand your knowledge of scuba diving concepts and equipment through independent study. Gain leadership abilities through practical workshops with an instructor mentor.
As a divemaster, you’ll supervise scuba diving activities and assist with scuba classes. Divemaster is the first step in your diving career. In the Keys, divemasters guide divers around our beautiful wrecks and reefs and assist instructors with certain scuba classes. If you want to take your diving career one step further, you can become a scuba instructor. If you like people, have a passion for scuba diving and want an extraordinary life, become a PADI instructor.
If you’re passionate about diving, our oceans and working in a paradise-like environment, reach out to your local PADI career development center and get more information on how to start your road to adventure and happiness.
