FLORIDA KEYS NEED FEMA SUPPORT

OFFICIALS AWAIT ELIGIBILITY FOR FEDERAL ASSISTANCE

The

storm surge and subse quent flooding caused by Hurricane Ian as it churned west of Key West took many Key Westers by surprise.

On every countywide emergency management call, from Sept. 23 to Sept. 28, Jon Rizzo, warning coordi nation meteorologist for the Na tional Weather Service in Key West, told Monroe County and Key West officials he was “very concerned” about a 2- to 4-foot storm surge that would be at its worst on Sept. 28, especially at high tide.

Still, the relentless rain, unusu ally high tides and winds that gusted occasionally to hurricane force made the storm surge flooding much worse than many expected. Key West Mayor Teri Johnston told the Oct. 3 audience at Hometown’s can didate forum that nearly 300 homes were unlivable or nearly so due to flooding from Ian.

Florida Keys officials as of Oct. 4 were still awaiting the official dec laration by FEMA that would make Monroe County eligible for federal damage reimbursement for both government and individuals. As of Oct. 4, Monroe County had not been listed in what’s known as Category

A, which makes a county eligible for public assistance and individual as sistance to help with storm-related damage and needs.

U.S. Rep. Carlos Gimenez, whose district includes the Keys, visited Key West on Sept. 30, when he assured city and county officials he had already sent a letter to the president and federal government asking that Monroe County be declared eligible for assistance. The meeting at city hall included assistant city manager Todd Stoughton, the city’s emergen cy management chief Greg Barroso, housing authority director Randy Sterling, City Commissioner Clayton Lopez, Police Chief Sean Branden burg, Monroe County Emergency

Management Director Shannon Weiner, county and city attorneys, and Coast Guard and Navy leaders. City Manager Patti McLauchlin was in Fort Myers throughout the storm. She owns a home there and had gone up beforehand to care for a friend who’d had surgery. Johnston was not at city hall on Sept. 30 as she had traveled after the storm to Charlotte County, where she and her wife, Dar Castillo, own property.

“You had damage, absolutely,” Gimenez said at city hall. “It’s not the same as the west coast of Florida, but there’s no doubt damage here.”

He pledged his support for the county’s classification. Gov. Ron DeSantis also sent a letter on behalf of Monroe County, Johnston told the Oct. 3 audience at Hometown’s can didates forum at Tropic Cinema.

Officials were still waiting as of the afternoon of Oct. 4.

“Our elected officials at all levels are aware and working on it with the FEDM and FEMA,” said county ad ministrator Roman Gastesi, accord ing to an Oct. 4 press release.

“At this time, Monroe County is collecting Hurricane Ian-related debris. Additionally, individual as sistance is available for Florida Keys residents through SBA loans.”

LOCAL, STATE, NATIONALPOLITICS TAKE CENTER STAGE

HOMETOWN FORUM HOSTS CANDIDATES IN KEY WEST

Gun control. Immigration. Economics. Politics. And oh yes, abortion. All the offlimits topics at the dinner table were on the table at a candi date debate Oct. 3 in Key West .

Hosted by Hometown, a non partisan voter education group, the event took place in one of Tropic Cinema’s smaller theaters. The inti mate venue accommodated about 60 people.

Candidates for the Key West city commission District 4 seat, state representative and U.S. House an swered questions posed by panelists Joe Moore of US 1 Radio, business owner and attorney Jennifer Hulse and Key West Weekly editor Mandy Miles.

STATE REPRESENTATIVE

The state representative race pits Republican incumbent Jim Mooney against Democrat Adam Gentle.

Perhaps not surprisingly, a question for state House candidates about Florida’s new 15-week abor tion restriction drew the most ire from the largely left-of-center audi ence.

Answering first, Gentle received applause when he called the 15week abortion restriction “uncon stitutional” due to Florida’s privacy protections in its state constitution.

“The situation we have now is so repugnant that a victim of rape or incest would be forced to carry that fetus to term because representa tives like Mr. Mooney here think they know better than the mother. And that’s not how I feel,” Gentle said before passing the microphone to Mooney

“I did vote for the abortion bill, you’re correct,” Mooney said. “And I do not think that I know what a mother, or wife, or daughter knows. I struggled with that bill greatly — 18 weeks, 15 weeks. I started doing a God-awful amount of research and I can tell you that a woman’s right to privacy is absolutely the most important thing, as is anyone’s right to privacy.

“The reality is, if in fact … there are underlying issues, a woman can get an abortion. It’ll take two doctors. It’ll take a number of different sce narios, but that doesn’t make it right or wrong; it just makes it what it is today. This has been going on since I was in high school and it’s sort of repugnant that we’re even discussing it at this level in 2022.”

At that point, much of the audi ence erupted with incredulity that Mooney had voted in favor of the restriction.

“The fact that this is still an issue, the Supreme Court has obviously turned this thing upside down,” Mooney said after the outburst. “I voted the way I voted.”

Gentle and Mooney did agree, however, that Florida’s property insurance industry is “an absolute disaster,” to use Mooney’s words.

Gentle blamed corruption, law suits and the lack of a free market for insurance companies in Florida.

“We have no market for insurance any more,” Gentle said. “Citizens (the state-run insurer) … is undercutting the market by 50%. We need to cre ate competition. … Another prob lem is corruption in claims, rackets between builders and insurance companies,” Gentle said.

Mooney blamed lawyers, saying, “Every insurance bill we’ve passed has been brought into litigation. We stepped on the wrong toes. We stepped on the attorneys’ toes. Until we can figure out how to get past the lawsuits, there’s not gonna be a quick fix in Tallahassee. There’s not gonna be a quick fix in Washington.”

U.S. HOUSE Candidates for the U.S. House — incumbent Republican Carlos Gimenez and Democrat Robert Asen cio — disagreed when asked about federal student loan forgiveness, es pecially when compared to the cost of corporate and banking bailouts by the federal government. Neither candidate addressed the corporate bailouts in their responses.

Asencio called the college loan companies “predators,” adding, “Why would we not want our students and workforce an opportunity to contrib ute to the economy by buying homes instead of paying a loan for life?”

Gimenez said he had voted against the student debt relief bill “because it’ll add to the national debt. ... The Biden administration has already spent over $4 trillion, which puts our children and grand children in a mountain of debt. … What do you say to those who already paid off their student loan debt? What about the fact that 70% of loans forgiven are for people who make over $100K per year? We need to focus instead on the high cost of higher education,” Gimenez said.

Both men agreed that the country’s immigration policies need serious reform.

Gimenez said, “We have 2 million people crossing illegally. Another million cross and we don’t know who they are, where they’re going, or what they’re doing because the Biden administration changed the Trump administration’s policies, which had decreased those illegal crossings by 90%. … We want im migration, but legal immigration. The entire system is broken.”

Asencio concurred, and said he wants to find a way for immigrants to begin working in the U.S. as soon as possible rather than have to wait up to 10 months for a hearing.

KEY WEST CITY COMMISSION DISTRICT 4

The debate between Key West city commission District 4 candidates featured only Lissette Cuervo Carey. German told the audience that Kim Highsmith had called earlier that day to say she had COVID. Highsmith and her stepson were recently arrested for misdemeanor battery, but all charges were dismissed days later.

Carey, who works for the Key West Housing Authority, told the audience she’s been helping Bahama Village residents, especially those who live in housing authority apart ments, recover from Hurricane Ian’s flooding. She declined to name her top two campaign advisers, saying instead that she has a “team of 10 or so people helping me.”

She said she’s been listening to the people of her district, where she has lived her whole life, and is intent on representing their interests in city hall. She said she wants to see better water quality at beaches and incen tives for affordable housing, rather than penalties.

STORM RECOVERY EFFORTS PROVIDE FOOD, DONATIONS, SUPPORT

• SOS Foundation is feeding those who have lost their kitchen appliances to Hur ricane Ian. The food pantry is serving 200 hot meals daily at Frederick Douglass Gym and is hoping to raise $60,000 to continue its efforts for the estimated eight weeks it will take to replace the majority of appliances. Residents George Cooper and Judy Blume kicked off the SOS Hurricane Ian Relief Fund with a $10,000 donation.

HONORING A COMMUNITY ICON BY PAYING IT FORWARD

• SOS is also purchasing shelf-stable and easy-to-prepare foods for residents of the Bahama Village Housing Authority Complex, who were hit especially hard by storm floods last weekend. Visit sosfoundation.org to help.

• Big Brothers Big Sisters, which is returning to the Florida Keys after a 20-year absence, delivered a shipment of food and mattresses Tuesday to Bahama Village.

Forthe month of October, the Keys Weekly Newspa pers are partnering with United Way of Collier and the Keys to remember and honor the life of Mike Forster. A business owner and community advocate, Forster led the effort to feed the Florida Keys in the days following Hurri cane Irma and throughout the COVID pandemic. He served on various boards, including the United Way, and went on mission trips to Uganda to serve the hundreds of children living in or phanages.

The

floodwaters of Hurricane Ian receded nearly a week ago, but have now been replaced by everything those waters touched. Sofas, beds, chairs, appliances, books, artwork and soggy boxes now line the streets and sidewalks of several Key West neighborhoods, including Bahama Village and the New Town neighbor hoods around Laird and Rose streets.

Government officials as of Oct. 4 were still waiting for Monroe County to be added to the list of Florida counties that are eli gible for reimbursement for storm damages through the Federal Emergency Manage ment Agency (FEMA).

But Key West families didn’t have time to wait for the government. Several community groups, nonprofits, individuals and busi nesses quickly stepped up to start meeting people’s immediate needs:

• Local businessman Paul Menta cre ated the Conch Love organization and a corresponding GoFundMe page for Bahama Village & Key West Family Flood Relief. Glad Tidings Tabernacle is administering the donations to provide assistance. The page had raised nearly $13,000 by the afternoon of Oct. 4.

• Conch Town Records, the Green Parrot Bar, and We’ve Got the Keys will host a fund raiser for residents displaced by the Sept. 28 fire at 3201 Flagler Ave. The event is set for 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11 at the Green Parrot Bar, 601 Whitehead St. Musicians and host Bill Hoebee are all donating their time and talent for the event. Those wishing to donate can do so at the event, or via a PayPal link set up at www.FantasyFest.com, or by deliver ing/mailing a check made out to “We’ve Got the Keys” to 922 Caroline St. 100% of proceeds will be distributed directly to the displaced residents. For more information, contact Nadene Grossman Orr at We’ve Got the Keys, 305-295-9112.

• Sister Season Fund is offering financial assistance to those displaced by the Flagler Avenue fire. Visit sisterseason.com or call 305-304-9826

• The Key West Housing Authority is sur veying damage to its public housing apart ments. Call 305-809-1101 to report damage

• The Southernmost Moose Lodge is collecting and redistributing donated items, including clothing, furniture, food,l hygiene products, linens and towels. 700 Eisenhower Drive.

• United Way of Collier and the Keys is collecting money and providing a list of com munity resources at keyshelp.org.

• The Monroe County Community Or ganizations Active in Disaster (MCCOAD) is looking for donations to help locals. Some 220+ families and 70+ liveaboards were flooded and/or damaged by fire due to Hur ricane Ian and are in need of mold remedia tion, construction assistance, furniture, appli ances, food, transportation and other items and services. The best donation is cash. This enables the group to prioritize and distribute funds directly as needed to residents’ specific needs. For cash donations, please log on to uwcollierkeys.org/give. Please designate your donation to Monroe County Hurricane Ian Relief. This ensures that funds with this des ignation will benefit 100% Monroe County residents.

• The city of Key West is conducting a damage assessment of local residences. Key West residents who had significant damage should call 305-809-1101. This list will be used to help determine community resourc es needed.

• Key West is working to collect storm de bris from streets and sidewalks. Place debris in the city’s right-of-way, NOT on sidewalks or blocking the road. Keep debris clear of fire hydrants. Household garbage must be put in normal trash collection bins for regular pickup.

An Islamorada councilman and Monroe County com missioner, Forster passed away on Sept. 6, 2021 at the age of 61 following a battle with COVID. Forster’s goodwill and generosity has inspired many Keys residents to carry on the spirit of giving and kindness to the island chain and those in need. In continuing the legacy of Forster, United Way of Collier & the Keys and the Keys Weekly Newspa pers are highlighting some of the folks in the island chain that continue to pay it forward to help their neighbors. The community is invited to spend the week leading up to Forster’s birthday, Oct.17-21, to promote goodwill and generosity through random acts of kindness and sharing to social media and other channels as #BeLikeMike. Visit UWCollierKeys.org/BeLikeMike to learn more about the various ways to get involved.

THIS WEEK’S “BE LIKE MIKE” FEATURES MIRANDA HENDRIX

Publix manager in Key West first met Mike Forster in 2018 when she helped open the Publix in Islamorada. “He’d come in to shop, and we got to know each other. Then he went through me to order 1,000 turkeys to give away for Thanksgiving dinners. He was such a giver. I started going to his food giveaways and other events and we started working together.”

What inspires you to give back to the community?

Working for Publix the last 24 years has helped nurture my inspiration to give back. Our founder, Mr. George, be lieved we should lead with a servant’s heart. He was asked one time what he’d be worth had he not given so much away. His response was, “Nothing.” That has always stuck with me and inspires me to try to be the best human I can be in life.

What’s the most enjoyable part about helping your community and neighbors? The most enjoyable part for me is seeing the firsthand impact on the commu nity. The Keys are so unique in the amount of charitable work we do, and it’s rewarding to see the community come together from all walks of life.

What kind of impact did Mike Forster have on your life or your community? Mike helped inspire me to see that even a small gesture can have a much larger im pact on people. You don’t have to make grand gestures. It’s more impactful to give not only physical items, but your time. Being there is what truly matters

In January 2020, the city conducted a survey of close to 4,000 residents, the majority of whom live in Key West year round. Some of the biggest con cerns in the survey were traffic, parking and conges tion. One popular sugges tion was to create closed or shared streets, as many cit ies have done throughout the country and the world.

IN HER FLOW AND KEEPING TEMPO: ON STAGE WITH PAMELA STEPHENSON CONNOLLY

SOMEONE YOU SHOULD MEET...

Pamela Stephenson Connolly watches her dancers sway in an open embrace across the floor of her Southard Street dance studio with a focused intensity. The Latin ballroom dance is elegant, sophisticated and downright sultry. Bodies rock together in syncopated rhythm, hips tilted, rolling, the sensuality building. In a visceral in stant, there’s a whipping spin; hair flies and the woman drapes backward over the arm of her partner in a deep arch of ecstasy.

“I love Brazilian dance — all Brazilian dance,” Connolly says. “And this is the most beautiful, most connected Brazilian partner dance you’ve never heard of. It’s the partner form of samba, called samba de gafieira.”

Connelly calls herself a closet dance histo rian. She is, in fact, many things — a sexologist and clinical psychologist, bestselling author of her comedian husband Billy Connolly’s biogra phy and several other successful titles before it, the weekly “Sexual Healing” columnist for The Guardian, former star performer on BBC’s “Strictly Come Dancing,” and an actor and comedian with hundreds of creds that include “Saturday Night Live” and Mel Brooks’ “History of the World Part I.”

But her passion reigns in dance and is evident in the name of her Key West studio, Pasión Project (pasionproject.com). More than two dozen performers have gathered there over the last several weeks in preparation for the upcoming true-crime musical comedy, “Bum Farto – The Musical,” that Connolly wrote and is now producing and directing.

“In this show, we have all the Latin dances: salsa; cumbia, which was a precursor to lam bada; bachata; Argentine tango; merengue; Carolina shag; swing; jive; ’70s disco; tap; coun try line dance; and crazy druggie show dance — stuff I don’t even know where I got it.”

Connolly’s world of dance began with ballet when she was 5, a practical means to address her polio-stricken limbs that evolved into a lifelong exploration as a performer. She discov ered Brazilian dance accidentally during a book tour in her native New Zealand and afterward, went to Brazil to study it.

“I noticed there were a lot of street kids who didn’t have any prospects at all who have amazing dance ability,” she says. “I mean, in credible, including capoeira — they could do ev erything — high level, athletic dance, and very, very brave, with amazing lifts and tumbles,” she said. “They just pitch themselves into it and think nothing of it and just try anything.”

Connolly gives her creative visions an un equivocal forward momentum, likely powered by her ability to break limits and reinvent the rules to match her depth and fierce compas sion. Unlike many traditional companies that rely on dancers with decades of training, Con nolly formed a dance company with these nontraditional students, then put them into shows and festivals she created in Brazil, all of which have been met with great success for everyone involved.

“I’m very bloody minded. So I’ll just do it,” she laughs. “There have been elements of blind trust in it, but I have also been doing theater since I was 5 years old.”

These days, Connolly is happiest doing theater as a producer and director. “Bum Farto – The Musical” opens Thursday, Oct. 13 at San Carlos Institute and runs until Oct.27 (bum fartothemusical.com). The show is based on a bona fide infamous Key West character — the 1975 fire chief who went down in a federal

drug bust known as Operation Conch. Connolly saw a “Where’s Bum Farto?” T-shirt during the COVID shutdown and was compelled to dig in, using the story as a base and adding elements of fiction that revealed themselves as she wrote. From creation to performance took less than a year.

“It just seemed to write itself,” she says. “I think a lot of that was because we had no plan. That’s the beauty of it. There was no pressure, there was no thought that I would ever mount it. I said, ‘Why don’t we just do this for fun?’ which is how a lot of the best things happen.”

The show is a swift 90-minute production with acclaimed actors, dancers and musicians from around the globe and locally — includ ing Broadway’s Aaron LaVigne, the Jesus in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” who trades his crown of thorns for a tourniquet and needles to play Brutus, the heroin-addicted snitch. Dan Krysa — a true musical genius and award-winning producer — created a rollicking score of more than two dozen song-and-dance numbers. And vibrant lighting design coupled with historic images and news clippings projected against sparse but colorful sets put 1975 Key West and Bum Farto back in the spotlight.

“It’s a glorious celebration of an infamous but iconic man whose fate and place in history was linked to so many others,” she says.

The musical also pulls narration in as a key element, something that lends well to the true crime genre and was an ingenious solution to a potential problem.

“I didn’t write scenes at first because I wasn’t sure that my dancers would have the act ing background to be able to make that work,” she said. “People didn’t seem to mind that the fourth wall was broken, that performers are explaining things and introducing themselves as characters from that era, then walking back into the scene. They just bought it.”

What’s something you’d like to learn? Patience.

What are you reading now? My Bum Farto script. Over and over and over…

What is your superpower? Only ONE superpower? I need THREE. My first superpower would be having the ability to breathe under the sea. Then I wouldn’t fear hurricanes, would I? I’d just dive into the Gulf of Mexico and hide in a sea-cave with the sharks.

Secondly, I’d like to be a creature that doesn’t need sleep. Imagine how much more could be accomplished. And finally, immortality. Is that too much to ask?

Tua Tagovailoa being removed from play twice under the NFL’s concussion pro tocol, the league saw 12 more players, includ ing several quarterbacks, being set down on Oct. 2.

Something has to be done. Should all those injured players be dropped for their seasons, for their careers? Nope. Too drastic. But the current protocol clearly isn’t sufficient.

Tagovailoa has already been ruled out of the next game on Sun day, Oct. 9 against the New York Jets — 10 days after he last played, which is interesting because he has already been cleared of the concus sion protocol.

Miami coach Mike McDaniel made the announcement on Oct. 4, saying the quarterback would not play Sunday against the Jets. According to Sports Illustrated, McDaniel said it was “premature to decide whether Tagovailoa will be going on injured reserve, which would sideline him for at least four games.”

Tagovailoa is playing for the Dolphins under a four-year, guar anteed contract of $30.3 million and was drafted No. 5 in 2020.

The NFLPA (that’s the players’ union) exercised its rights and fired the unaffiliated neurotrauma con sultant who examined Tagovailoa during the Buffalo game on Sept. 25. In that game, he was noticeably wobbly on the field following a hit, but was examined and allowed to return to the game. Four days later, on Thursday, Sept. 29, in a game against Cincinnati, a vicious tackle took the starting quarterback out of the game. It was Tagovailoa’s sec ond concussion within four days. Teddy Bridgewater replaced him.

“Chris Nowinski, a leading ex pert on concussions, told The Palm Beach Post he fears Tagovailoa may have permanent brain damage,” The Palm Beach Post reported on Sept. 30.

Miami Dolphins Quarterback Tua Ta govailoa last season, in January 2022. WIKIPEDIA/Contributed

“Nowinski, a Boynton Beach resident, had warned that if the Dolphins allowed Tagovailoa to play against the Cincinnati Bengals, it would represent a ‘massive step back’ for concussion care in the NFL.”

His replacement, Bridgewater, graduated from Northwestern High School in Miami and attended the University of Louisville. Miami also has quarterback Skylar Thompson, a draft pick from Kansas State. The Dolphins also have added quarter back Reid Sinnett to their practice squad.

Bridgewater, who will turn 30 on Nov. 10, was drafted in the first round in 2014 by Seattle, but was soon traded to Minnesota, where he became the Vikings’ starter for all 16 games and was selected for the 2015 Pro Bowl. From there, he went to New Orleans, where he started 15 games in 2020. Bridge water was a backup quarterback in New Orleans and Carolina for two years before being signed by Miami.

While other teams are having to replace their quarterbacks with deep second and third stringers, I would think Miami stands tall with Bridgewater, who is signed for this season only.

Tagovailoa was described as “brittle” while at the University of Alabama and hasn’t indicated he’s any stronger as a pro. Miami may be looking for another quarterback by next season.

drops stuff, breaks things and falls down more than any adult should. She’s married to a saintly — and handy — fisher man, and has been stringing words together in Key West since 1998.

Television news teams around the world claimed Queen Elizabeth II’s recent death “shocked a nation.” Really? The woman was 96, for God’s sake. She was royal, not immortal.

I have to say, I don’t understand the fascination with the British royals. I’m neither disgusted by nor scornful of them; I’m just confounded by the public’s obsession over a bunch of people with unearned billions and no real jobs.

And frankly, through the lens of today’s angry extremism and quick ness to blame, I’m bewildered by the relative lack of resentment toward members of the royal family and the monarchy as a whole. I understand there are people who oppose the entire institution and question its continuing relevance. But those voices seemed nearly inaudible across the pond, where mobs of mourners waited in line for 12 hours to watch the old lady’s coffin pass by on the street.

No doubt my confusion comes from my own American, ethnocentric ways, and the lack of anything compa rable to British royalty in this country.

I just don’t get it. The inflexible traditions and expectations. The re lentless scrutiny and outrageous public criticism of the royals’ most private matters, the constant conspiracies and comparisons.

Perhaps the royal scrutiny and eagerness for scandal on the part of the British belies a yearning to connect with these people on a human level. Person to person, not monarch to subject.

I swear, it’s as if the commoners WANT the royals to screw up. They thrive on and devour every perceived or potential blunder. Remember Harry’s despicable Nazi costume and drunken antics? Everyone loved to hate him for it, and yet quickly forgave him, recalling a boy who had lost his mother.

Speaking of which, has no one learned anything since the death of Princess Diana? The press? The royal family itself? Does anyone worry that Princess Kate will endure the same? Apparently not. She seems above re

Enter Meghan Markle. Can any American blame this mixed-race wom an for not understanding or embracing a medieval monarchy and all that it represents? Let’s not forget, Meghan Markle is not only a commoner (a rather insulting term in and of itself), but also a working American woman. Yes, an affluent, celebrity American woman, but a working commoner nonetheless. Princess Diana was at least British. She wasn’t born royal, but was at least familiar with the intrica cies and idiosyncrasies of the monar chy. Markle must have been at times disgusted, disoriented, confused and of course bewitched by the pageantry, power and publicity.

Does the royal family have any true power in the British realms? Can it effect true change? Advance peaceful political progress? Other than through charitable donations and visits to chil dren’s hospitals?

How much does the royal fam ily pay in taxes? And is that consid ered income tax, considering they’re technically unemployed. Does no one in the UK question the obscene and unearned wealth afforded to these certain people who were somehow anointed by God eons ago to have dominion over others?

What makes them – or anyone –royal? They’re no better than anyone else. But don’t tell them that. What have any of them done to earn the crown, to deserve their wealth?

Not for 500 years has a king or queen truly ruled the kingdom. They don’t lead troops into battle. They don’t conquer lands or show benevo lence to peasants and subjects.

These people are billionaires by birth.

Again, there’s nothing comparable in American society, so the matter is inexplicable to me.

Royals aren’t elected. They’re not chosen by the public. They’re spec tacles, not people.

And yes, I understand, they have royal duties and make huge contri butions to thousands of charitable endeavors.

But would this country tolerate such illegitimate wealth and celebrity? Never mind. Forget I asked. People still follow the Kardashians, which con founds me just as much.

But we’ll save that rant for another day.

FANTASY FEST BEHIND THE SCENES

HURRICANE IAN COULDN’T DAMPEN FIFER’S FOLLIES FANTASY FEST TEAM

Christie

Fifer excels at rallying and gal vanizing teams. When Hurricane Irma wreaked havoc on Big Pine Key and surrounding areas in 2017, the profes sional artist and former high school teacher strapped on a tool belt, laced up some work boots and orchestrated a chainsaw-wielding, mud-slinging, earth-moving team of volunteers. Now, following Hurricane Ian, she’s simultane ously mucking out her sea-water wet Key West home and orchestrating a hot-glue wielding, float-building, costume-bedazzling team of creators for the “Cult Classics & Cartoon Chaos” themed 2022 Bud Light Fantasy Fest parade, set to march down Duval Street on Oct.29.

Keys Weekly recently caught up with the in trepid artist for some parade-prepping insights.

What was the first year your team entered the parade and how did it come about? We had actually been participating in the Friday Masquerade March “locals parade” for years, but hadn’t entered the official pa rade because it didn’t strike us as being very costume-driven, and we were more motivated as costumers – thinking of things that were big and ridiculous and different from everyone else. Our first year to enter the Fantasy Fest parade was 2017, after Hurricane Irma.

What was your entry that year and what followed in subsequent years? We were a walking group costumed as hot air balloons and our theme was “Around the World in 80 Days.” We started with a core group of about eight, and then picked up an additional posse bringing us up to maybe 20-22 people. Then, like Alice (in Wonderland, our theme for this year) we began to grow. In 2018, for the “Oh … the Games We Play” Fantasy Fest theme, we had about 40 people in our wildly colorful “Key West Kandyland” themed group and won the Best Costume category. In 2019, rather than compete, we were asked to appear at the front of the parade. That year we had about 35 people for our “Wizard of Oz”-themed Friday Masquerade March group, and 92 joined in for our “Mozart’s Symphony Comes to Life” for Sat urday’s Fantasy Fest parade entry, which made international news.

Do you have a set outline or plan of at tack that you follow each year? How about room for spontaneity? Our team has a very succinct plan each year. I typically come up

with the idea of how I think it should look as a whole. I also choose a color palette. That helps keep us all uniform with such a large group. Once costumes and roles are assigned, people have versatility and room for their own creativ ity, to make their costume outstanding. Our motto is “more is more.” And bigger is better.

What would you say are your top 5 must-have materials for float building? Our top five items are glitter, lights, glitter, lights and glitter. In no particular order. And I would be lying if I didn’t say we hot glue absolutely everything.

Will you share what you’re cooking up for 2022? We have always been walking entries, but this is our first year entering as a float — and we actually have three separate floats underway to create the world of “Alice’s Excellent Adventures.” I don’t claim to know anything about inverters, generators, electric ity or hydraulics, but I know in my head what I want it to look like, so I surround myself with people who are knowledgeable and way better at that sort of thing. This year we are fortunate to have a couple of guys on the team who have completely invented and manufactured a giant head-turning Cheshire cat. And that makes me very, very happy.

How many participants do you expect to have this year? Do you have many return ones? We currently have 90 people; about 75% of them are return participants, and we have several who come from out of town.

How does a person join your team? In order to participate with us it helps if someone can vouch that you’re not high-maintenance.

Any advice for anyone thinking about entering? Get organized and stay organized. It is far more difficult keeping 100 adults on track than it is 100 teenagers, and I say that from ex perience. We hang giant to-do lists on the walls all around our workspace, and things only get crossed off once they are completely, 100% fin ished. That way little things don’t get forgotten along the way. Fair warning too — we start in June. It takes endless time and plenty of money all for this great hurrah. And when building big,

workspace is the crippling equalizer. We were freakishly fortunate this year how we procured our warehouse space, and since I know it won’t be available next year, unless someone comes up with a replacement space for us, this could be our only “go big or go home” float building year — so we’re going to make it visible from space!

Our

top 10 lists are typically concocted with a blend of humor and sar casm aimed at world events, leaders and the general absurdity of daily politics. However, in an attempt to avoid a weekly helping of hate mail, violent threats (true story) and 10-minute voicemails ranting about the latest conspiracies, we decided to pump the brakes this week and offer a positive twist to the Top 10. So in case you missed it, there were actually some optimistic stories reported around the globe this week and we have a list to prove not all news is, well, bad news. Always here to help, we present our...

POSITIVE HEADLINES IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK

10. “The Techno ‘Clean-Up Raves’ Restoring Ukraine” From tragedy and ashes come inspiration, typically in the form of art. And Ukrainians using raves in bombed-out buildings to build back cities and spirits is worth a read.

9. “Dolly Parton, Sissy Spacek and others Remember Loretta Lynn”

The passing of Loretta Lynn is not a positive story, but her greatness as an iconic female in a male-driven industry is worth celebrating. She changed the game, not just in country but all music, for so many women after her.

8. “SpaceX and NASA Set to Send Crew of International Astronauts to Space” Aside from an array of science experiments the astronauts will be conducting, the crew will include the first Native American woman, Nicole Mann, to ever travel into space.

7. “President BIden to Tour Hur ricane Ian Damage in Florida with Gov. Ron DeSantis” It’s difficult to believe a political headline could be deemed positive, particularly after a devastating hurricane. But there was a time when our nation’s top leaders could actually display signs of unity for a greater cause. Will this joint visit de frost the vast freeze between the two parties? No. But it is good to see that a huge priority is being placed before partisan politics.

6. “India Deploys Super-Sniffer Dogs to Protect Cheetahs from Poachers”

This story has it all, from dogs to pro tecting an endangered species from extinction. Google it and enjoy.

5. “Little Leaguer Hugs Distraught Pitcher Who Hit Him in the Head”

Two amazing things happened when a little leaguer was beaned in the head by a wild pitch. First, the pitcher was mortified by his mistake and reduced to tears. And then, the hitter consoled him with a hug. Talk about things you

would never see from professional players. We could all learn a thing or two from our children.

4. “107-Year-Old Vet Receives Silver Star” The headline is self-explanatory, but Sgt. 1st Class Harold Nelson’s honor was long overdue.

3. “Aaron Judge Hits Home Run No. 62 to Pass Roger Maris’s American League Record” If Aaron Judge’s blood is devoid of any performanceenhancing substances (we can only assume he is clean), he is the greatest single-season home run king in the history of baseball. Had it not been for baseball’s steroid era, Judge’s feat would have played out in packed bars across America and would have inter rupted every major network’s feed this past Tuesday evening.

2. “Shohei Ohtani Deserves to Win AL MVP Over Aaron Judge” Wow, we are actually debating an MVP race where one of the candidates just hit 62 home runs while chasing potential triple crown numbers. But outside of the New York media frenzy exists a 24-year-old Japanese native playing ball for the lowly Angels and doing what no other MLB player has done –ever. Only the great Babe Ruth, who pitched and slugged his way into base ball folklore, can be compared to the rarity of Ohtani’s pitching and hitting abilities. And even then, there is no comparison. Ohtani currently has 34 homers as a hitter and over 200 Ks as a pitcher. No true fan could proclaim this would occur in our lifetime.

1. “Man Saves Mother From Flooding Water During Hurricane Ian” If you watch the news, you probably saw the images or heard this story along the way. But in the midst of tragedy, it was an uplifting story of bravery, love of family and determination. The story of Johnny Lauder saving his 84-year-old mother is inspiring.

‘BUM FARTOTHE MUSICAL’ OPENS OCT. 13

5 REASONS TO GO TO THE SHOW Bum

Farto is on his way to Key West. “Bum Farto — The Musi cal,” that is, taking the stage at the San Carlos Institute in Key West Oct. 13 through 27.

The true-crime musical tells the tale of a ring, a sting and an infamous Key West fire chief who tempted fate and federal agents in a 1975 drug raid known as Opera tion Conch. The smokin’ hot show created and directed by actor, comedian and bestsell ing author Pamela Stephenson Connolly opens with a sizzling ’70s opening night gala featur ing pre-show cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and groovy tunes to benefit the Key West Firehouse Museum. If that’s not enough to make you want to get your hot little hands on tickets right now, here are five reasons you just might want to:

1. Another reason to wear a costume. Break out your bell bottoms, pull on some platforms, and dust off your boogie-woogie — the Oct. 13 opening night party pays tribute to the island’s firefight ing heritage by benefitting the Key West Firehouse Museum with groovy tunes, pre-show cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and square grouper (joke!) that precede the show.

2. Meet “El Jefe,” the man in red. Get a glimpse of the flam boyant, drug-pushing, scarletclad fire chief (played by Tybalt Ulrich) who had a weakness for gold bling in this swift 90-min ute production that’s raucous, sensual and, at times, tender. Then decide for yourself if he was the criminal they made him out to be … and where he might have disappeared to.

3. Can you say tango, samba, merengue, bachata?

Connolly runs a Key West dance studio (pasionproject. com) that specializes in Latin partner dance and features

Pasión Project’s “Bum Farto — The Musical,” a hilarious true-crime musical, shows at the San Carlos Institute Theater in Key West Oct. 13-27. Visit bumfartothemusical. com for information and tickets.

LARRY BLACKBURN/Contributed

workshops with master Braz dos Santos, the world’s most celebrated lambada dancer, and part of the show’s cast. Connolly is also a sexologist and clinical psychologist who writes a weekly “Sexual Heal ing” column for The Guardian, which should assure you these aren’t your great-grandmother Blanche’s ballroom moves. Watch athletic, exquisite danc ers with moves so steamy you’ll feel like a voyeur.

4. The music score includes “Bum Was Pinched,” “I Need More Blow” and “Smoke Your Tuna Here.” In case it isn’t obvious, “Bum Farto — The Musical” is not a tale of woe or finger-wagging morality, but rather a cheeky take on an infamous, iconic man and the people around him.

5. Get ghosted and like it. Brutus, the heroin-addicted Vietnam vet snitch who gets clipped, has a role revival and returns to the stage. Broad way’s Aaron LaVigne, who played Jesus in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” trades his crown of thorns for a tourniquet and needles to deliver us into our humanity and compassion with an unearthly, haunting voice.

Tickets start at $35 up to $235 for top-tier balcony seats featuring a private VIP bar. Tickets at bumfar tothemusical.com.

Like many kids his age, 4-year-old Carter Steele made his football debut this August playing in the Key West Junior Football League in Key West. While this is unexceptional at face value, it is notable that he made his athletic debut on George Mira Sr. Field. Little Carter just hap pens to be the great-great-grand-nephew of Key West’s own George Mira Sr., University of Miami’s fabled quarterback who went on to win three Super Bowls in his eight seasons in the NFL. While he does not yet know it, Carter belongs to Key West royalty, a member of a family with a deep athletic history that spans much farther than the bridges of the Keys. The name Mira is synonymous with South Florida football greats, particularly quarter backs, which is why I did a double-take when Key West High School football coach Johnny Hughes first sent me the Conchs’ ’22-’23 football roster.

Number 8, listed at QB, was junior Adrian Mira. I knew instantly that Key West was in for some big home gates this season.

Key West is a town steeped in pride, tradition and community. Conch Pride is something that cannot be explained; it must be experienced. If you have ever been in the stands during a home football game in Key West while the band is playing the Alma Ma ter, you likely felt it. The entire island embrac es its teams to create an atmosphere that is indescribable. The pride displayed by Key West fans is palpable, and regardless of wins or losses, they remain steadfast in support of their own. And even if every fan packed into the stadium is not directly related to the Miras, though a fairly large number are, they still claim George Mira as theirs.

A Key West native, born to a stay-athome mother and a foreman at the local plant that provided Key West’s fishing and shrimping fleets with ice, George grew up in the Southernmost City playing baseball, basketball and football. He excelled in all three and also, I am told, plays a decent round of golf. Mira led the Conchs to state championships in baseball in 1958 and 1959 as their star pitcher. His deadly accuracy and zip earned him an incredible 31-2 record as a starter, first-team state honors and a major league offer with the Orioles, but it was the gridiron where Mira made himself a legend.

How did an unassuming kid from tiny Key West become larger than life? The answer is woven into the fabric of multigen erational Conch families, including the Miras. It is not elusive or magical in any way. It is work – lots of hard, focused, purpose-driven work. It was that work which led not only Mira to his storied fame, but a disproportion ate multitude of Conch athletes who have represented Key West in college and major league sports. Mira played on the same base ball team as John “Boog” Powell, who played

KEY WEST FAMILY ROYALTY REACHES BACK THROUGH DECADES OF ISLAND LEGACY

Excited by the Mira connection on this year’s roster, I contacted a few of the many notable Miras in Key West, all of whom directed me to their unofficial spokesper son, Yvette Mira Talbott. Ironically, I first met Talbott, George Sr.’s niece, at George Mira Sr. Field.

Obviously, the family is thrilled to have another Mira taking snaps for the Conchs. Adrian is the fourth Mira to play the position, following behind George Sr. himself; George’s older brother James “Jimmy” Mira, Yvette’s fa ther and long-time Key West Commissioner; and George’s younger brother Joe, who still coaches in Miami. George Mira Jr. was also a standout linebacker at University of Miami during its fabled “bad-boy” years. Key West has waited more than half a century for an other great quarterback, and junior Adrian is on his way to making history of his own with Key West.

Carter Steele, George Mira Sr.'s great-great-grandnephew, poses with a September 1963 Sports Illus trated featuring Mira on the cover. In a moment of true history for University of Miami fans, Carter plays on George Mira Field in the Key West Junior Football League for the Gators. YVETTE MIRA TALBOTT/Con tributed.

in Major League Baseball for 17 years, winning the American League MVP award in 1970; and Richie Garcia, arguably one of the greatest MLB umpires in the history of the game with 24 years and four World Series under his belt. Three ath letes starring in the pros hailing from the same little island a hundred miles from anywhere with about 6,000 telephones and no social media or internet is incredible.

In his first start for the Conchs, there were flashes of the quick feet synonymous with a Mira QB. Built sturdier and more com pact than his great-uncle, Adrian Mira runs the ball more like a bull than a matador, the moniker given to George Sr. for his capac ity to scramble and his striking appearance. Coach Hughes describes him as a “tough kid with a good football IQ” and says that given more experience, he could be something special. Currently sidelined with an injury, Conch fans are going to have to wait to see just how special he can be, and whether he can fill the enormous shoes of his famous relatives.

I asked Talbott if she remembered any thing special about her uncle. Aside from his feet – which, even as a grandfather, were fast and showed glimpses of The Matador – she explained that it was more than talent that drove the brothers, George Jr. and now the next generation of Miras to the top in foot ball. Without hesitation, she offered the Mira family secret: “Hard work. No matter what you do, work hard. We always believed that was most important.”

The

storm named Ian didn’t stop the 44 cy clists who pedaled their way from the top of the Florida Keys to the bottom on Oct. 2.

The annual ReMARCable Tour de Keys starts in Key Largo and heads south until the riders run out of road in Key West.

The event initially had 76 riders registered, but Hurricane Ian hampered some people’s plans — and flooded some of their homes.

Each rider raises a mini mum of $100 for MARC, which helps the nonprofit provide life services for developmen tally and intellectually disabled adults throughout the Florida Keys.

Peter L. Vey – Summoning the Light

Opening February 18th, 2023

Peter Vey is establishing his place as a Regionalist painter with thick palette strokes and Abstract Expressionist & Impressionist techniques. Joining the historic American Scene painters like Winslow Homer, Grant Wood, John Steuart Curry, Reginald Marsh, and Thomas Hart Benton, Vey strikes a fresh approach to tropics.

After a classical education in art history at Duke University, he returned his parents and grandparents Florida where he now lives and paints. A love of the landscape and foliage in and around the tropicsespecially, The Florida Keys & Key West has inspired a poetic journal of canvases of Peter’s vision ever since. His unique view, fresh colors, and mastery of painting technique result in works remarkable for their sense of place. The ambiance in Peter’s paintings is like the atmosphere in which he creates them, echoing the vibrant light of the sun drenched tropics. Vey’s palette knife technique is unusual in that he sculpts in a painterly manner rather than decorating with the thick lush colors of the southern latitudes. His works exude lush oral details, formal architectural patterns, and intricate almost abstract owery geometric forms. Peter has created what is simply a satisfying visual statement.

TREACHEROUS TRAVELS AT CARYSFORT REEF

British ship among the casualties

Anatural-born adventurer, Kirk Munroe traveled extensively. One of those adventures led him to South Florida, where, in 1886, he moved into the growing mainland community of Coconut Grove. He was 36 years old.

Munroe might best be remembered as a writer who authored 40 books. A few of his books were novels, but mostly he wrote travelogues detailing his adventures. His works included stories about his experiences in South Florida and the Keys. Living in Coconut Grove and an excellent sailor, Munroe readily ex plored Biscayne Bay, the Florida Reef and the Keys.

He penned the following description of the water surrounding the Florida Keys: “The terrible Florida reef, with its bewildering maze of shoals, tortuous channels, fierce currents and coral heads lifted almost to the surface, is an ever present menace to the mariners of the waters. Since the date of its discovery it has probably been the cause of more disasters than any other region of similar extent in the world.”

One of the reefs that he would have been familiar with, which may have inspired the quote, was Carysfort Reef. It is one of the old est, most mature reefs in the chain and the result of thousands of years of tedious work by reef-building coral polyps. The extensive reef system stretches for four miles in the shallow Atlantic waters, about six miles off the coast of North Key Largo. Not only massive in size, it is also a shallow reef with depths ranging from 5 to 25 feet. Corals grow so near the surface that a frothy meringue is left behind when the Atlantic washes over some of the shallower reef heads.

Carysfort, too, is one of the most danger ous tracts of coral making up the Florida Reef.

According to the historical record, about one-quarter of all the ships wrecked along the

reef line in the early to mid-1800s succumbed to Carysfort Reef. One reason for the high wreck count was that Carysfort was used as an umbrella term for many reefs growing off of the coast of Key Largo.

One of the ships to meet its end at Carys fort was the H.M.S. Winchester. The 60-gun British warship was built in Bursledon, England, in 1693. At just over 146 feet long and 38 feet wide, the square-rigged vessel maintained a crew of 285 sailors and soldiers. The captain was a man named Edward Bibb.

The Winchester was given orders to sail to the Caribbean and disrupt French business interests. Captain Bibb, with the support of the 60-gun warship Dunkirk, made a successful raid against the French colony at St. Dominique (now known as Haiti) in January 1695. After the attack, the Winchester and the Dunkirk, along with a captured French brigantine, sailed to the temporary home port of Kingston. Jamaica’s in famous Port Royal had fallen into the Caribbean two years prior after a devastating earthquake.

In Kingston, however, all was not well aboard the Winchester. Men were dying as quickly as one every day. Some accounts at tribute scurvy as the source of the sickness, and others to yellow fever. Scurvy seems to make less sense as there would have been loads of citrus available while in port. One hundred forty members of the Winchester’s crew died. Among the dead was Captain Bibb. John Soule was given command of the ship.

In September, Captain Soule sailed out of Kingston Harbor and joined the Dunkirk and the captured French brigantine. The death toll aboard the Winchester continued to rise as they sailed for the Straits of Florida. Soule, too, fell ill and, no longer able to perform his duties as captain, relegated his command to the next in line, Master Andrew Mallard.

Only 60 men were still alive on the Win

chester; of those survivors, only 10 were deemed healthy enough to work. As if things were not go ing poorly enough, the Winchester struck a large, shallow reef hard and fast.

BRAD BERTELLI

is an author, speaker, Florida Keys historian and Honorary Conch. His latest book, “Florida Keys History with Brad Bertelli, Volume 1,” shares fasci nating glimpses into the rich and sometimes sur prising histories of the Florida Keys.

It was just after midnight on Sept. 24, 1695. Seeing the Winchester in peril, the captain of the Dunkirk or dered the French brigantine to approach the wreck and rescue the surviving crew. Captain Soule sustained in juries in the impact and was transferred to the brigan tine, where he later died. The Winchester was left on the reef, where it splin tered apart and spilled its cannons along the ocean floor. However, the Win chester was not the ship to leave the most indel ible mark on the reef. That honor went to the H.M.S. Carysfort, a 118-foot- long British frigate armed with 24 9-pound cannons, four 3-pound cannons, and several guns on swivels. She hit the reef on Oct. 23, 1770. The good news about the Carysfort was that no one lost their lives, the ship was ultimately refloated, and it sailed away.

More than 200 years after the Winchester hit the reef that would become Carysfort, remains of the ship were discovered by two Miami fishermen, Sam Lynch and Jacob Mun roe. In 1938, six cannons from the wreck of the Winchester were salvaged and brought to Lig numvitae Key. Those cannons can still be seen on the gently sloping lawn leading away from the island’s coral rock house.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

EARLY DETECTION & TREATMENT STARTS WITH SCREENINGS

Breast cancer remains a top risk for women, making up 30% of all new female cancer cases in the U.S. annually. Fortunately, a screening mam mogram can help detect breast cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages. Lower Keys Medical Center is encourag ing women to schedule their screening now, because when breast cancer is detected early, life-saving treatment can begin right away.

“The best chance for sur vival of any cancer is early diag nosis and treatment,” said Dr. Stanley Santiago, Keys Medical Group Obstetrics and Gynecol ogy. “Mammograms can detect cancer before any symptoms, such as a lump, or spreading of the disease occurs, which can increase the likelihood of recovery.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Lower Keys Medical Center’s Women’s Im aging Center is open Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with expanded hours on Oct. 7, 12, and 18, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sat urday, Oct. 22, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A discounted self-pay rate is available through October. Call 305-294-5535, ext. 3308,

for more information. A physi cian’s order is required.

Early detection saves lives

Nearly all breast cancers can be treated successfully if found early. The most effective way to detect breast cancer at an early, treatable stage is to have yearly mammograms. Since mammography became widely used in the 1980s, the U.S. breast cancer death rate in women has dropped 43%.

The American College of Radiology (ACR) and Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) recom mend annual mammograms starting at age 40 for women of average risk. Different guide lines apply to women at higher risk.

African Americans and those of Ashkenazi Jewish descent should have a risk as sessment at age 30 to see if a screening earlier than age 40 is needed. Women who were pre viously diagnosed with breast cancer are recommended to be screened with magnetic resonance imaging.

Lower Keys Medical Cen ter’s mammography service at the Women’s Imaging Center is accredited by the American College of Radiology.

NOTICE OF KEY LARGO FIRE RESCUE AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES DISTRICT MILLAGE ELECTION ON NOVEMBER 8, 2022

On November 8, 2022, the Key Largo Fire Rescue and Emergency Medical Services District will issue a referendum to the voters seeking approval to increase the maximum millage rate in order to cover future costs of provid ing high-quality fire-rescue and emergency medical services to the residents of Key Largo.

The District Board of Commissioners wishes to make clear to Key Largo voters that the Board does not intend to levy annual millage at the maximum rate permitted under the proposed increase and remains committed to its longstanding policy of providing high quality firefight ing, rescue, and emergency medical services in the most cost-effective manner. The District has adopted a five-year operating plan that contem plates a millage rate less than the proposed maximum of 2.00 mills, however also understands the importance of long term planning. The following is the official ballot:

INCREASED MAXIMUM MILLAGE RATE FOR KEY LARGO FIRE RESCUE AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES:

The Key Largo Fire & EMS District may not levy ad valorem taxes exceeding 1.00 mill without voter approval. The District seeks to increase its maximum millage rate to cover future costs of providing high-quality fire-rescue and emergency medical services to the residents of Key Largo.

Shall the maximum millage rate of the District be revised to 2.00 mills, to fund the continued provision of fire rescue and emergency medical services to Key Largo residents?
