I
s there anything more purely enjoyable than sitting at a cafe table on a sidewalk and watching the world go by? The speculations are endless: I wonder what she is smiling about? Or why he is carrying those flowers? That couple who has stopped across the street: are they breaking up, or just discussing dinner plans? That reminds me, I was grumpy last night, must apologize later… If you think about it, the fact that we can derive so much information simply from the way someone walks past us is a kind of miracle. We have evolved extraordinary powers of observation and deduction: we can read cues in the angle of a head, the cut of a jacket, or a difference of inches in how far apart two people sit. Even when we are dropped into the middle of a different culture, where we can’t read all the outward signs with confidence, we still know the range of things – love, anger, jealousy, embarrassment etc. – that could be going on inside because we are watching fellow human beings. We are empathy machines. The moment someone walks on stage, this machine goes into overdrive. Why? Because we know two things: the clues here have been carefully chosen, and if we pay attention now there will be a pay-off. When a second character enters, the possibilities increase exponentially. When someone next to us laughs or nods, we go up a gear: what did I miss? As the show progresses, the air in the room changes: our breathing, our pheromones, our stillness or movement all matter. And the reward for this sustained attention is that time itself changes. When your perception is awakened, each moment has more colour, even after the show has finished. For a while, you will see the world, and the sad, joyful, fearful people around you, more clearly. It’s worth keeping your empathy machine in good condition.

Director’s Note
by Tim Carroll
Anyone who has ever returned to a favourite novel after many years will know the feeling of familiarity and strangeness: the book may not have changed, but you have. That’s how I feel coming back to Amadeus for the third time. The first time I directed it, I was 28 and childless, with so much spare time that I was able to set myself the challenge of listening to everything Mozart composed over the summer before rehearsals began. Thanks to the wonder of public libraries and an alarm clock set to five AM, I was able to do it: from the “Minuet in G” written when he was five years old, listed as K1 in the Köchel catalogue, through to K626, the “Requiem in D Minor” he was still writing when he died barely 30 years later, I just sat and listened. It was an amazing experience, one that I would recommend to anyone. The main consequence of that immersion was that I was unable to resist the temptation to add even more Mozart to the play than Shaffer had put there. I think I rather drenched the text. The second time I directed Amadeus I was in Lisbon and the play was being performed in Portuguese, a language described by Samuel Beckett as “simple, but unpronounceable.” By this point, I had two children and a lot less spare time. I was working at the National Theatre, in a beautiful and ornate auditorium; the stage design for the play matched it. My children seemed to enjoy it: one of them said “Of course I couldn’t understand the words, but the music was in English.” And now my children live in another continent and I have even less spare time. The play continues to evolve for me. Unlike a novel, it really does change: I have been blessed with three wonderful casts, each totally unlike the other. This time, thanks to them, the play seems funnier than ever before, without losing any of its painful quality. It’s like Mozart’s music, where there are no tears without laughter, and no laughter without tears.
Amadeus and Opera by David Fallis
In his acknowledgments in the published version of Amadeus, Peter Shaffer praises Peter Hall, who directed the first production of the play: “Before rehearsals began, he [Hall] promised that he would present me with an opera; and that is precisely what he did. The result was wholly satisfying.” So, are we going to the opera when we enjoy Amadeus today? Certainly, there are many operatic elements. Grand opera is full of characters who are larger than life, over the top, consumed by their passions. Amadeus is about Antonio Salieri (the Venetian composer, conductor, and teacher who lived during the late 18th and early 19th centuries) and his all-consuming envy of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Like opera, Amadeus is filled with music. Shaffer very specifically asks for long stretches of Mozart’s music, including several magical moments from the Mozart operas. As a conductor who has the had the wonderful pleasure and honour of conducting most of Mozart’s operas, I think Shaffer displays brilliant discernment about the moments from the operas he chooses to insert into the play. They are all touched with that ineffable quality which distinguishes Mozart from many of his contemporaries, and it is this ineffable, almost godlike quality which is a theme central to the play and to Salieri’s reaction to Mozart. The reconciliation scene from The Marriage of Figaro, the entrance of the Commendatore at the end of Don Giovanni, the trio “Soave il vento” from Così fan tutte, the final hymn of welcome at the end of The Magic Flute – these are all moments of wonder and awe, what 18th century thinkers might have called “the sublime.” If Amadeus is an opera, in some ways it is an opera about opera. Much of the storyline revolves around the challenges of getting operas produced on stage in late 18th century Vienna. At that time, operatic success was considered the highest achievement for any serious composer. The play makes clear how both Salieri and Mozart longed for the opportunities to have their operas produced on stage. Then (as now), producing opera was an expensive undertaking, and depended on the patronage of people of means, which in the case of 18th century Vienna, was centred on the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II and his court. Because opera was such an elite and expensive undertaking, it is true that the operatic world of Vienna was riddled with concern about whether you were in favour or out of it. Joseph II was notoriously fickle and impulsive with his power to commission and produce operas. Cabals, intrigues and turf wars were rampant. Shaffer begins his play with a very musical effect. His opening stage directions are: Darkness. Savage whispers fill the theatre. We distinguish nothing at first from this snakelike hissing save the word Salieri! repeated here, there and everywhere around the theatre. Also, the barely distinguishable word Assassin!... The scene has the air of a fast and dreadful overture. Shaffer makes his point: spoken plays do not regularly have an overture, operas almost always do. The opening scene is also important for reasons nothing to do with opera. It is a distillation of how rumour works, spreading like airborne contagion in whispers and half-heard insinuations. And, like a good musical effect, Shaffer reprises the whispers from time to time throughout the play. It is the rumour mill which grinds the grist for Shaffer’s play: rumours that Salieri poisoned Mozart; rumours that the two men were in mortal competition; rumours about why Mozart was writing a “Requiem Mass” at the time of his death. But as the two Venticelli (the little winds) say, “I don’t believe it. What do you think?”
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at piano, by Al Hirschfeld (1994) © The Al Hirschfeld Foundation www.AlHirschfeldFoundation.org.
Shaffer makes us face the fact that much of the story is based on rumour, and we will be asked to decide if we believe it. Salieri himself says to us the audience, “And now, gracious ladies, obliging gentlemen! I present to you – for one performance only – my last composition, entitled The Death of Mozart; or, Did I do it?” [An Aside: Another way in which Shaffer’s play is like a Mozart opera is in the use of asides. In an example like Don Giovanni, many of the characters, especially the cheeky servant Leporello, will suddenly step out of the action on stage to address a comment directly to the audience, often quite funny. Eighteenth century theatre was full of these asides, as if to remind us that we the audience are in the theatre together with actors on stage, us in front of them. We are not silent and unobserved voyeurs of some imagined world – very different from the experience of going to see a film. In some ways, the whole of Amadeus is a giant aside. Salieri speaks to us directly throughout the show. After each of his recollections of life with Mozart, we come back to the fact that we are being directly addressed by a dying man. One particularly nice touch is when Salieri calls for an intermission because he needs to take a pee – low-brow humour which Mozart himself would have loved. Like a play within a play, in Amadeus we are hearing Salieri’s last composition, entitled The Death of Mozart; or, Did I do it?”]
So did he do it? Well, in fact, no, he did not. Mozart most likely died of a highly contagious respiratory infection, which examinations of death certificates around the time of his death show was particularly virulent in Vienna. Many people in much better health than Mozart were taken away by this local epidemic. Mozart never enjoyed good health, and he had what we might today call “pre-conditions” which hastened the work of the malignant germ. You will notice that I had to say, “most likely died.” Medical records and scientific understandings were not what they are today, so modern forensic doctors who have examined Mozart’s case in detail cannot say with 100% certainty, but there is no evidence of poisoning. But, like any good conspiracy theory, the rumours of Salieri having poisoned Mozart were given room to flourish in the absence of unequivocal evidence. And it is absolutely true that many people reacted to the news of his death with horror, especially since he was such an incandescent genius cut off far too young, even by 18th century standards. Mozart may have started the rumours himself: according to his wife Constanze, in his late-stage attacks of delirium he insisted someone had poisoned him. And did Salieri confess to the crime on his deathbed? Once again, hard evidence is lacking, especially because Salieri also suffered from delirium at his end. But Peter Shaffer wisely reminds us with his inspired opening scene that we are not here to witness documentary theatre. We rarely go to the opera or to the theatre to encounter historical fact, even if the subject matter is based in history. We go to witness and feel human passion, made manifest by acting, music, movement and theatrical effects, at which Amadeus succeeds brilliantly. Production History Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus premiered November 2, 1979 on the National Theatre’s Olivier Stage directed by Artistic Director Peter Hall, with Paul Scofield as Salieri, Simon Callow as Mozart and Felicity Kendal as Constanze. (It later transferred to Her Majesty’s Theatre, Haymarket with Frank Finlay, Richard O’Callaghan and Morag Hood assuming the leading roles.) The NT production opened in New York at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre on December 17, 1980 starring Ian McKellen, Tim Curry and Jane Seymour and played for almost three years (with such notable replacements as David Dukes, Frank Langella and John Wood as Salieri, and Peter Firth, John Pankow and Mark Hamill as Mozart.) In 1998, London’s Old Vic Theatre revived the play with Peter Hall returning to direct David Suchet and Michael Sheen, and this production transferred the next year to Broadway’s Music Box Theatre. Amadeus returned to the Olivier Theatre only a few months after playwright Peter Shaffer’s 2016 death, in a new production by Michael Longhurst – described by Guardian critic Michael Billington as “an epic piece of music-theatre” – featuring Lucian Msamati, Adam Gillen and the 20-piece Southbank Sinfonia. In 2027, Artistic Director of the newly-formed Welsh National Theatre, Michael Sheen, will return to the play – this time as Salieri – opposite Callum Scott Howells, in a Jeremy Herrin production that will originate in Cardiff and then transfer to London’s West End. In Canada, the national tour of Peter Hall’s original production played at Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theatre in 1983; Brian Bedford, Stephen Ouimette and Megan Follows appeared in the Stratford Festival’s production in 1995; and, in 2003, a production directed by Morris Panych opened at Canadian Stage’s Bluma Appel Theatre featuring David Storch, Matthew Edison and Shauna Black. (Also appearing in that cast as one of the “Venticelli” was Shaw ensemble member Damien Atkins, who, five years later, was seen as Mozart in Alexander Marine’s production at the Segal Centre in Montreal, a production designed by our Funny Girl designer James Lavoie.) Director Miloš Forman’s sumptuous film version swept the 1985 Academy Awards, winning eight Oscars including Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Actor for F. Murray Abraham as Salieri. And in 2025, Britain’s Sky Atlantic debuted a new five-episode limited series drawn from Peter Shaffer’s play with Paul Bettany, Will Sharpe and Gabrielle Creevey leading the cast. This production Ian McKellen as Salieri and Tim Curry as Mozart marks the first time Peter Shaffer’s work in the 1980 Broadway production of Amadeus. has been seen at the Shaw Festival. The Author PETER LEVIN SHAFFER (19262016) was one of the 20th century’s leading British playwrights. Almost 70 years after he first appeared upon the scene, his plays continue to be revived in London, New York and, in translation, in every corner of the world. Born 100 years ago on May 15, 1926, into a Jewish family in Liverpool, Shaffer was raised by a theatre-loving mother, alongside two brothers, one of whom was his identical twin Anthony (whose play Sleuth is currently playing at The Shaw’s Court House Theatre). He received a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge, and soon after graduation emigrated to New York, where he worked at both Grand Central Station and the New York Peter Shaffer Public Library. Gradually coming to the realization that he wanted to write, he returned to England when his screenplay The Salt Land was produced on ITV Play of the Week in 1955. His first stage play, Five-Finger Exercise, premiered at the Comedy Theatre (now the Harold Pinter) in 1958. For the next two decades Shaffer was rarely absent from London or New York stages. Five-Finger Exercise was followed by the comic double-bill The Private Ear and The Public Eye (1962); The Royal Hunt of the Sun (1964), a portrayal of the conflict between the Spanish and the Inca; and Black Comedy (1965), a farce with one of the most ingenious concepts ever conceived. Arguably, he reached his apotheosis at the National Theatre in the 1970s with Equus (1973), the unnerving story of a mentally disturbed stableboy’s obsession with horses; and Amadeus (1979), a fictionalized look at the rivalry between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his fellow composer Antonio Salieri. Later plays included the biblical epic Yonadab, Lettice and Lovage (written for Maggie Smith), and The Gift of the Gorgon. Peter Shaffer was knighted in 2001 and spent his final years revising his plays for the many revivals which have become a regular feature of theatres around the world. He also left behind the first act of an unfinished play about Tchaikovsky entitled Bezique. Peter Shaffer died on June 6, 2016 and is buried alongside his longtime companion Robert Leonard in London’s Highgate Cemetery.

Tim Carroll
Director
SHAW 2026: Director for Amadeus, Heartbreak House, A Christmas Carol (Toronto); 11th season. In my first season here I directed two Shaw plays; since then I have not done any. So it’s great to be back in the room with this strange, provoking Irishman (and I should know, since I am one myself). Shaw is nothing like as well-known nowadays as he was when the Festival started in 1962; but he will never cease to resonate. Every time I programme one of his plays, someone asks me ‘that’s in response to the news, right?’ No, I say, we decided to do this long before that (whatever it is) happened. Amadeus, meanwhile, is a play that will never go out of fashion for other reasons: sublime genius like that of Mozart always comes at a cost, both to the artist and to those of us who can only stand and wonder.

Set & Costume Designer
SHAW 2026: Set & Costume Designer for Amadeus, A Year With Frog & Toad, Set & Props Designer for The Wind in the Willows. My first experience on stage was as a flame around a cauldron in a production of a very condensed version of Macbeth at Roding Primary School. I can still remember the witches’ lines. That fire costume and the song that I still have memorized led to twenty-some years of designing.
Kevin Lamotte
Lighting Designer
SHAW 2026: Lighting Designer for Amadeus, The Wind in the Willows. One of my early theatre experiences was watching Cyrano de Bergerac here at the Shaw Festival in 1982. The design by Cameron Porteous with lighting design by Robert Thomson, was so inspiring. In 1988, I returned to the Shaw Festival as an Assistant Lighting Designer and had the great opportunity to work with Artistic Director Christopher Newton and his Associate Neil Munro. All these years later, I continue to be inspired by the artists and their work here at the Shaw Festival. Each season, I share this wonderful experience with talented people, doing intricate and beautiful work, to create a unique world for each play.

SHAW 2026: Music Supervisor for Amadeus, Music Director for Funny Girl, Cinderella; 28th season. Mom starred in community theatre and my parents took me to rehearsals when I was quite young. Other parents brought their kids too; but while the other kids were in the parking lot playing, I was inside watching rehearsal, mesmerized. I caught the theatre bug early. Thanks to Dad for all those years of driving me to piano lessons. Shaw productions of Tristan and Maria Severa – two musicals I co-wrote – have been two of many highlights at Shaw. I’m thankful for many wonderful teachers in my life, and I’m happy to mentor up-and-coming music directors at The Shaw. SHAW 2026: Movement Director for Amadeus, Heartbreak House, Ohio State Murders, A Christmas Carol (Toronto). One of the greatest discoveries I’ve had as a parent was learning to shrug my shoulders when my children would say, “I’m bored.” Always within minutes they start a project, or make up a game, far more interesting and fun than any “proactive activity” I could ever come up with. From my daughter defying physics by attempting to climb up the stairs while sitting inside a cardboard box, to my son reinventing the microwave in a post-apocalyptic Lego world, I witness advancements in science and technology that extend far beyond logic and reason and into the worlds of dreams and possibilities … and how delightful that my work as an artist is also just that. SHAW 2026: Amadeus, A New Work in Progress; 8th season. I’m happy to return to the Shaw Festival. Some favourites from previous seasons include The Amen Corner, Sweeney Todd, The Magician’s Nephew and Peter and the Starcatcher. I went to a performing arts high school in Newmarket, then to Sheridan College; both programs brought me to The Shaw to see shows. I still remember my anticipation, excitement, and the grin that covered my face, when the house lights dimmed or when the overture began – feelings that still bubble up today. Being an artist in this company, on this stage, is a young student’s dream turned reality. I’m thankful for all arts educators and contributors; also, for my creative, diverse, loving and supportive pillars on- and offstage.

SHAW 2026: Amadeus, Heartbreak House; 16th season. My first theatre experience was on my seventh birthday. I memorized the box office phone number for The Phantom of the Opera and begged my parents to take me. My dad bought Phantom-shaped wine gums, and I can still remember the dress I wore. It was all very exciting and, as I watched the show, I knew that’s what I wanted to do. But it wasn’t until my high school drama class that I truly fell in love with playing pretend. Our teacher, Debra McLauchlan, inspired in us curiosity and creativity. She became a mentor and dear friend and still inspires the way I approach my theatre work.

SHAW 2026: Amadeus, One for the Pot; 3rd season. One of the first plays I ever saw was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at Barrhaven Public School. It was a co-production between the Grade Fives (Snow White, the Prince, and the Queen) and the Grade Ones (Dwarfs One through Seven). I was transfixed! I wanted to do that! I waited so patiently to get to Grade Five so that I, too, could play pretend in front of the whole school. Tragically, whichever brave teacher spearheaded that show never did another one, and as a result I’ve spent my entire life chasing that high. I don’t even know who that teacher was, but they changed my life. If you’re reading this, and you teach, thanks! We are all nothing without our teachers.

SHAW 2026: Amadeus, Heartbreak House; 3rd season. I’m so thrilled to be having my first full season at the Shaw Festival. My earliest theatre memory is when my mom won tickets on the radio to Ross Petty’s Christmas Pantomime: Aladdin. We got all dressed up, drove into the city and I was in complete awe of all the bright lights, actors, costumes and beautiful Elgin Theatre. I had the best time laughing, singing along to the music and most importantly booing Jafar whenever he came on stage. Unknowingly my mum planted a seed and I’m so grateful that she then gave so much to water it and encourage me to grow in the arts. Thank you to my safety net for allowing me to pursue my dreams fully and to you for supporting the wonder and magic that is theatre. Enjoy!

SHAW 2026: Amadeus, Heartbreak House; 14th season. I hail from the beautiful Battlefords, Saskatchewan, the land of the living skies. Growing up I was fortunate that my mother regularly took my sister and me to see everything from touring shows to gallery exhibits, to week-long fringefestival extravaganzas. Some highlights here at The Shaw have been playing the loverly Eliza in My Fair Lady, the feisty Georgiana in Just to Get Married, and Johanna in Sweeney Todd opposite my fella.
SHAW 2026: Amadeus, Heartbreak House; 4th season. I grew up in New York City and Ottawa, on a steady diet of old movies, dreaming of being Fred Astaire, Judy Garland and Cyd Charisse all in one. Much of my childhood and youth was dedicated to dance, but I turned to acting when I started touring the parks of Ottawa during summers with a Shakespeare Young Company. After attending The American Musical and Dramatic Academy and Toronto Metropolitan University, I stayed in Toronto working steadily onstage and onscreen. My first time in a theatre was being taken to see an operetta when I was in kindergarten. One of the actors had been planted in the audience and was pulled on stage seemingly at random. I spent the rest of the opera amazed and hoping I’d be next. It is a joy to be here at Shaw working alongside these talented artists. SHAW 2026: Amadeus, A New Work in Progress; 8th season. Born in Cap-Haïtien, Haiti, I immigrated to America with my mother in search of greater opportunities. Like many immigrant parents, my mom dreamed of a traditional future for me — one rooted in stability, perhaps as a doctor or lawyer. But everything changed in grade school when I made my theatrical debut riding a green skateboard in Runaways by Elizabeth Swados. Although my mother did not attend the performance and initially dismissed my ambitions, that night became a turning point in my life. Receiving a standing ovation awakened something in me I could not ignore. The exhilaration I felt gave me purpose, confidence, and direction. From that moment, I became determined not only to pursue the arts, but to prove that my passion could become my future.

SHAW 2026: Amadeus, A New Work in Progress; 6th season. My artistry is influenced by two Jamaicans who are now with the divine: my grandfather (one of the island’s most renowned tenors), also named David Reid, and my dance teacher, Tony Wilson. I performed my first musical when I was sixteen at the Jamaica Musical Theatre Company (my grandfather was a founding member) and the resident choreographer was Mr Wilson, who invited me to train and perform with his dance company two years later. So before I moved to Canada to study theatre at Sheridan College, in Jamaica I juggled my full-time university management degree, community theatre and a dance company for four years. My mother joked that I majored in extracurricular activities. Those extracurricular activities have blossomed into a wonderful career and life in Canada. Instagram @davidandrewreid.

SHAW 2026: Amadeus, A New Work in Progress, Cinderella; 1st season. I am very humbled to be invited to The Shaw this year. It has been a dream of mine for a while. I was born in Scarborough, ON. I have been surrounded and embraced by music and all forms of art since I was a child listening to Anita Baker’s Rapture in a 2006 Volvo. For as long as I can remember, theatre has been my therapy, my escape and my meditation. I have been doing it since the age of 13 and maybe even before then, if I count the many times I was a secret agent or Power Ranger in my parents’ basement as a kid. The stage and the playground of my mind has always made sense and has always had chemistry. For anyone who read all of this, you rock! Thank you for coming to see live art, and thank you for allowing a kid from Scarborough to play professional dress up.
SHAW 2026: Amadeus, Heartbreak House; 4th season. The year I graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a music degree, I took a trip to Australia with a buddy. We financed the trip by busking: performing a 30-minute comedy/juggling routine. We weren’t brilliant but we made enough to pay for our lodgings and pints. It was terrifying and exhilarating; a mix of chaos and happy accidents. We’d begin our show surrounded by strangers. But by the end of the show we were surrounded by a group who had something in common: a few laughs from a street show. I’m inspired by theatre’s community-building potential. We experience a story together and experience each other experiencing that story.

SHAW 2026: Amadeus, Heartbreak House; 23rd season. We’ve been doing this for a few thousand years now — gathering as a collective to watch a group get up and pretend to be people other than who they really are, to say words that are not their own, to enact ersatz rage, or love, or sorrow. Perhaps we keep doing it because it’s a chance to observe without being a part of the equation, or to exercise our cognitive prediction or social decoding skills, or to stretch our capacity for empathy, or to share in that strange spasmodic breathing behaviour we call laughter. As our worlds multiply and mediate and synthesize, this forum remains: a place to listen to ourselves, to observe the dance of real bodies in coordination and conflict in the here-and-now, to ruminate on the delicate balance of individual drives within collective pressures. A place to be human.

SHAW 2026: Amadeus, Heartbreak House; 5th season. My earliest theatre memory is playing a tap-dancing dog in a recital when I was five. I didn’t do much tapping as I recall. I located a coloured mark on the stage, panted a bit, and walked in a circle; a performance you are likely to see echoes of tonight! Some years later, I desperately wanted to attend a performing arts high school in Toronto. Unbeknownst to me, my grade school principal found out, sought funding for my commute and convinced my hesitant parents to let me go. That single act of kindness changed my life.

Stage Manager
SHAW 2026: Stage Manager for Amadeus, Sleuth; 40th season. I first visited the Shaw Festival in 1987 as part of a school tour. The then-head of Scenic Carpentry asked if any of us had a particular interest in building sets, and I raised my hand. At the end of that part of the tour, he drew me aside and asked when I might be available to start work. Over the ensuing years, I have worked in the scene shop, been part of the electrics, audio, changeover and running crews, served as Technical Director for the Court House Theatre, and rehearsed and run dozens of shows as part of the Stage Management team. A lot has changed at the Shaw Festival in that time, but one thing hasn’t: the dedication of our company, those you will see onstage as well as those you do not, to bring you a performance second to none.

SHAW 2026: Assistant Stage Manager for Amadeus, Heartbreak House; 2nd season. I am a stage manager mostly based in Winnipeg when not in NOTL. Recently, I’ve worked on Elf – The Musical (Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre) and The Undeniable Accusations of Red Cadmium Light (Prairie Theatre Exchange). I studied theatre production and stage management at the University of Winnipeg and am lucky enough to have worked in many of the beautiful theatres we have across the country. Enjoy the show!

SHAW 2026: Amadeus, A New Work in Progress; 1st season. In 2010 after graduating from my technical theatre program I did what I think many 22-year-olds do when finishing school – panic. Maybe I didn’t want to pursue theatre after all. Maybe it would be too hard. Maybe I needed something that felt more stable. I moved back to my hometown to take some time, work at a Dairy Queen, travel a bit, and considered maybe going back to school to be a teacher. I spent a month in Australia and saw a production of Twelfth Night by Bell Shakespeare at the Sydney Opera House. It was extraordinary. I left weeping because I realized if I didn’t even try to pursue theatre I would never get to work on something that felt as important as that show. I came home, quit Dairy Queen, and started working as a stage manager. That was 16 years ago. Thank you for coming to and supporting live theatre!

SHAW 2026: Production Stage Manager, Stage Manager for A New Work in Progress; 2nd season. Originally from Calgary, I started my professional career 30 years ago at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton and have worked in events, dance, theatre, and musical theatre across Canada. My first trip to NOTL was to cheer on the Stratford cricket team (sorry!) at the annual Shaw/Stratford cricket match over 20 years ago and I am very happy to now be a part of the stage management team at the Shaw Festival. With the move to NOTL, I have also been able to further my pursuit of a more recent passion by setting up a home pottery studio with the dream of one day becoming a full-time potter.

SHAW 2026: Associate Production Stage Manager, Stage Manager for Jeeves & Wooster in Perfect Nonsense; 18th season. I hail from small-town Southern Ontario, but since completing my Bachelor of Honours Drama at the University of Waterloo I have worked all over Canada. Niagara-onthe-Lake has been my home base for 17 years and I always love how early spring flowers bloom here and how it signals the return to rehearsals and loads of life at the Festival. I love delving into the intellectual work of the plays we do here or being in music and choreography rehearsals with so many incredibly talented people. It’s hard not to love your workday when it’s filled with singing, dancing and tons of laughter.

Campaign
There is an artist inside each of us. It is the essence of our shared humanity. But the world today has our heads down and our minds distracted. We are losing the ability to talk to each other, to look each other in the eye, to find solutions together. This $150 million Campaign will transform The Shaw into a buzzing campus of connection, creativity and curiosity. A Campaign that will see the creation of the Shaw Artists’ Village and the Burton Centre for Lifelong Creativity and the rebuilding of our iconic Royal George Theatre. A Campaign for real human connection.
