The subject of the design study with the leading idea “Building communities” is a residential building with a commercial first floor in the Warsaw district of Powiśle. The exact location is at the corner of Tamka and Cicha Streets, and the address is 32 Tamka St. The choice of the plot was motivated by the desire to respond to the problem of isolation of social circles and problems with integration of new residents. The reason for this is the strong gentrification of the neighborhood, i.e. the displacement of formerly poorer residents of tenement houses and blocks of flats by new, richer members of society. This is a result of the increasingly attractive image of Powiśle caused by placement new high-standard residential investments and prestigious retail and service facilities. With my project I try to influence these social behaviors by generating spatial solutions provoking interactions between residents of the building and people using services present there. The building can be divided into 3 elements. Residential part, commercial galleries and first floor with a courtyard. The apartments are accessible from the galleries on the inner side of the courtyard, where common spaces, resting and meeting places are planned to be located. They have a direct, open visual contact with the courtyard, which is accessible to both residents and people using services on the first floor. The café located there is to have a multifunctional character and together with the

green courtyard constitute a space for work and rest for the users. The area of the café is easily adaptable and may be separated into isolated working rooms or completely opened up spaces. Private balconies on the street elevations of the building also remain an important element. Each apartment has equal access to at least one balcony. This is a unifying element and gives a strong message that every resident, regardless of the size of their apartment, has access to what the building offers with its aesthetics of representative elevations. Both the social character of the building and the context of its historical surroundings were important. The location, according to the Study of Conditions and Spatial Development of Warsaw, is defined as a complex of post-industrial buildings of historical and cultural value, and it is recommended that it should be subject to preservationist protection in the future. Following this fact, the building continues the frontage development and in a way tends to organize the space on the basis of former quarters. It refers in its overall height and the height of its storeys to the neighbouring building. The finishing material of the façade is light-cream brick with darker grey brick in the ground floor. Brick was an inseparable part of the old industrial Powiśle and often appears in the historic fabric of the surrounding buildings, hence the choice of this material as the leading aesthetic material of the building.

The term I propose is a study of the influence of spatial divisions on the shaped mood. The idea was born as a result of analysis of the phenomenon of rest and relaxation as understood by contemporary social needs. Having defined the problem, which in the understanding of the project is a constant stream of information and omnipresent pressure to be „up to date” with the surrounding world, I moved on to an attempt of a design response. The building, with a seemingly open, locally even single-space plan, is in fact divided into many smaller zones. By positioning the columns appropriately, they intermingle and create visual walls at different viewing angles. The building invites one to

immerse oneself and get lost without unnecessary analysis of the observer’s surroundings. Being in the interiors is accompanied by individual feelings of isolation and intimacy, which in the sense of the design problem is supposed to lead to the best possible feeling of relaxation and unwinding.

The project is an attempt to find identity and common spaces in the city, where all manifestations of individuality have been harassed for years and entire neighborhoods have been wiped off the face of the earth in order to realize increasingly insane totalitarian ideas.
ople from outside the power structure of the country. My project is supposed to go in a completely different direction and combine the calm, almost small-town character of the buildings behind the square with the representative frontage parallel to the river.
The building combines a large amount of common and residential space. It has 15 apartments, most of which can also be adapted for short-term rentals. In common spaces we can find places for coworking, recreation, eating, relaxing or urban agriculture. This is one of the most important elements of the project.
It was also important for me to use and capture local architectural elements such as typical Bucharest roof pergolas and to relate the storey layout to the neighboring buildings.
The idea for such a strong common program came from the desire to deny the totalitarian assumptions which are located in the immediate vicinity of the building. The socialist realist dictator’s palace which we see on the other side of the river with its group of official buildings was supposed to be a forbidden city, a zone closed for pe-

My single-family home design was inspired by the character of the local development. The plot is located at Nadrzeczna street in Siekierki district. This area is characterized by a large number of buildings with additions over the years. Another characteristic feature is the slightly allotment character of the whole area. These attributes of the nearby architecture had a great influence on the development of my project. I based the house on the idea of additionality and solidity with varying heights. Five main blocks containing functions that require more intimacy shape the rest of the building’s interiors. The resulting spaces have a more corridor-like and narrow character. The heights are also significant. Differentiated ordinates of the ceilings gradate the weight of the rooms and give them character (e.g. kitchen as the centre of the house has the highest ceiling and highly placed windows but the living room is lower and narrower thanks to which it has a more cosy disposition).
the total purpose of using specific solutions depending on the given material. In my case it was wood and in my design I tried to emphasize as much as possible the wooden character and construction of the house. E.g., through the visible roof structure or by continuing the rhythm of the structure’s posts in the elevation. The whole house was designed for a family of 4 people. It is also worth mentioning about the function that was given to us. Each of us was supposed to include in the project a service proposed earlier by himself. I have chosen a wicker craft workshop. I motivated this choice by the fact that this profession is, next to carriage drivers, the second most popular one in Old Siekierki.
What is also important, throughout the whole design process, was the idea of „building with materials”, i.e.

Volunteerism is an extremely noble and hardworking organization. However, like every organization, it has its problems. The issue of „burning out” of volunteers should be taken very seriously and try to find a solution. My pavilion is meant to highlight the achievements of the shelter’s volunteers and show them how important they are. When they enter or look at the pavilion every day, the number of dogs that have already found homes thanks to them will motivate them to continue their work. What is more, the building that I designed has

to fit into the terrain by referring to the variability of the terrain through the height of the levels while its contour line is inscribed so as to avoid the existing trees.

The Atelier Complex Densities class consisted of many stages. The project itself was not the most important because we had about a month to complete it. It was preceded by a series of analyses, interviews and workshops with other students in order to learn as much as possible about the city and its problems. The city we worked in was Chandigarh, a great project by Le Corbusier, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The first series of workshops was to familiarize us with Rhino+Grasshopper software. With it we were able to do a lot of analysis such as sunshine, noise, light pollution, amount of green space, trees etc. Thanks to them we were able to obtain data such as the projected amount of electricity production from solar panels placed in strategic locations or roadway temperatures in sunny areas, noise maps, etc.
in Mumbai and a site visit and survey in Chandigarh. The area I had at my disposal was sector 45, a very interesting point on the city map. At its heart lies the village of Burail with a population of over 90,000. This sector is characterized by typical brick buildings, a unique structure of an ancient village blended into the modern fabric and the highest population density in Chandigarh. It was built in the 1960s, in the second phase of Le Corbusier’s project.
A site visit was also important before the design. The 2 week study tour included a workshop with students

PROJECT The idea for the project-parking came up after a joint deliberation between students and teachers. After conducting in-depth analysis, we found that this was a completely neglected field in Chandigarh and here we have an area for creative interpretation of the theme which has become parking. DENSITY Sector 45 is the most vulnerable area in the entire city. It has an area of about 1 square kilometer and a population of over 114,000. The reason for this is the village of Burail, which is extremely densely built up with low-quality buildings.

GREEN SPACES Like most areas in Chandigarh, this area is rich in greenery and trees. Trees are found in every street and courtyard. As an added bonus, there is a „forest“ on the border of a busy road, cutting this sector off from the noise. Currently, unfortunately, quite neglected, but with a lot of potential.

SOLAR RADIATION Solar radiation analysis was performed using grasshopper software for Rhino 3D. This allowed to select the best locations for solar farms/panel roofs and to estimate the expected energy production per square meter.

Student’s architectural competition, 2nd prize prof.: Piotr Kudelski, Agnieszka Kwiecinska PROJECT TEAM Kewin Niewiarowski, Damian Kunert
The competition premise was to propose a spatial arrangement of the square which would serve as a waiting area for tourist groups before entering the permanent exhibition. Our idea assumed a strong connection with the history and specificity of the studio. The first inspiration was to „overexpose the buildings” of the film studios and show the waiting visitors the magic of the cinema. This idea led us to the final result which is introducing waiting tourists to the film set. We divided the set into 3 elements: lights, camera, actors and director. On the basis of this systematics we based the arrangement of glass walls set in the square.

The result was a multi-plane composition, which can be penetrated by observers and interact with the spatial composition. The waiting tourists have the opportunity to move to the film set, take pictures with the actors’ likenesses or peep at the real frames through the multimedia viewfinders installed in the glass.

The aim of this workshop was to capture the characteristics of the specific territory of Bucharest and to answer contemporary issues of the city. The workshop brought together architecture and urban planning students from France, Belgium and Romania to answer local questions such as landscape and infrastructure on the urban periphery, metropolitan consolidation, social changes in the post-communist urban environment or the search for new typologies based on Bucharest’s typical carriage houses and communist-era blocks.

CLIMATE AND MOOD ANALYSIS SERIES: INSTALLATION AS A COMPLEMENTARY ELEMENT OF THE SPACE ____________________________________________

The task we worked on during the first semester was atmospheres and moods: a psychogeographical map. Our task was to make 3 charts and a final mockup depicting the kojene issues: Atmospheres, moods: after choosing the location, I focused on defining the mood and highlighting the features that shape it. I decided to highlight the damage to the walls, which in my opinion, were the main factors in creating the atmosphere. Generators: I decided that the main generator of my place is time. It has influenced the formation of the wall surface. I presented it as a process changing urban planning within my place by means of graphic interpretation of maps from the 18th, 19th and 20th century. Tuning the mood: our task was to make our own design intervention in the previously selected place. I de-

cided to emphasize the atmosphere by using a perforated plane in which holes are placed only where the wall has no damage. This highlights the analyzed feature of the place and enhances the atmosphere. The material I have chosen is Cor-Ten.
