Explore, Learn, Discover

Explore, Learn, Discover Exploring, Learning and, Discovery is paramount to everything we do. For Nora to achieve success, she must develop sustainable life skills, acquire critical thinking, mature during her collegiate career, and build connections with her peers, faculty, and the campus. We believe each institution is unique in its program, people, and place which should be expressed as part of your identity to create an environment of discovery and innovation.

Colleges and Universities provide the opportunity for students partnered with faculty, researchers, and their peers to make important discoveries which improve people's lives. The process of exploring. testing, learning, failing, and making a discovery is the key to success. Creating the environment where complicated problems are solved through collaboration across disciplines is necessary in todays rapidly evolving world. Hord Coplan Macht specializes in higher education Science and Technology facilities. Coupled with our broad experience in designing facilities for Health Professions, academic buildings, student centers, residence halls, as well as academic medical center and campus planning, we are focused on how we can improve people's lives.

Science and Technology Where will ideas come from? What leads to discovery?

"connecting nature and engineering" Scott Bio-Engineering Building Colorado State University, Fort Collins

Bioengineering applies the principles of biology and the tools of engineering to create viable new processes and products. The design of the Scott Bioengineering Building connects nature and engineering with plenty of natural light and views to the outside as well as a building which exemplifies the best of sustainability. The central atrium provides a gathering space for the researchers to collaborate and refresh with the goal of making important discoveries by exploring new approaches.

"collaborative labs" Chemistry Research Building Colorado State University, Fort Collins

Research is no longer a solitary exercise. Collaboration is key for out of the box thinking to solve complex problems. The Chemistry Research Building creates these opportunities for structured and serendipitous connections within the lab and outside it. The lab modules allow for flexibility to accommodate and maximize research groups with a mix of wet lab and computational labs adjacent to each other. Break-out rooms filled with white marker boards allow the work to be seen and shared among colleagues fostering more exploration.

"science on display" Biology Building Colorado State University, Fort Collins

Undergraduate science education is about fostering best lab practices, establishing an understanding of core biological principles, and creating a sense of discovery among the students. The Biology Building at CSU does this by creating science on display not only though the ability to see into the labs from the common areas, but also including displays and materials which demonstrate those principles. The Mountain Pine Beetle has decimated hillsides of pine trees across Colorado. What could have been seen as a disaster has been turned into a learning and economic benefit through the harvesting of the wood for use in buildings. Where the trees were harvested, new trees were planted to maintain the mountainside slopes and restore the forests. Demonstrating the power of nature and how it can be used to benefit both mankind and mother nature is a powerful message.

“industry simulation” Aerospace Building Colorado University Boulder

The aerospace industry has seen significant disruption over the last decade. With the privatization of space delivery vehicles and eventually passenger travel, the aerospace industry will continue to need forward thinking engineers. The new Aerospace Building at CU Boulder with its mix of education, collaboration, meeting, and variety of labs spaces will give students and researchers the ability to model and test ideas which will make the aerospace industry more efficient, sustainable, and safer.

“making maker space” Center for the Built Environment and Infrastructure Studies Morgan State University

It takes a team of different experts to build today. The Center for the Built Environment and Infrastructure Studies brings together design, engineering, and technology under one roof where teams work on solving complex problems. The building fosters collaboration and demonstrates sound sustainable building practices acting as a living lab.

“multidisciplinary connections” Engineering, Aviation, Computing and Mathematical Sciences Building University of Maryland Eastern Shore

Strengthening the engineering presence of the University of Maryland on the Eastern Shore, the Engineering, Aviation, Computing and Mathematical Sciences Building unites engineering, aviation, maker space, and communications all within one building. The new facility includes six specialized equipment labs, a nanotechnology lab/clean room, six electronics labs, anechoic chamber, high bay shop with a 10 ton crane, metal and carpentry shops; spaces for aviation sciences instruction including air traffic control and radar suite, three flight simulators, a flight simulation lab; one hundred person tiered seating classroom; fourteen general classrooms; ten special classrooms for mathematics, computer sciences, and telecommunications departments; a TV broadcast studio, control room and TV practice studios; student radio station and radio station practice studio; TV and radio editing rooms; four academic department suites; two Dean’s office suites; sixty faculty offices; and food service. The central atrium and small café offers the opportunity for the different disciplines to casually bump into each other fostering collaboration and out of the box problem solving.
