"connecting community" University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
UMD is one of the most unique campuses in the US. Originally envisioned by world renowned architect, Paul Rudolph, the campus is based on the idea of an agora of learning with residential neighborhoods around it. The master plan proposes new first and second year communities with a mix of academic and student life spaces situated close in to the core resulting in a more connected community.

"you never get a second chance to make a first impression" DePauw University
Small rural campuses must work extra hard to bring in students. DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana is a true gem, but the first time visitor experience did not reinforce that DePauw was a premier liberal arts institution. The master plan reoriented the campus front door, moved the art gallery and bookstore to the Courthouse Square to engage the community, and developed a new dining center as the social hub of the campus. The result was an increase in applications and a more secure enrollment.

Towson University
In 2002, Towson University had not built a new building in over thirty years. Over that time period, the university had evolved from a teacher’s college to a full-fledged university with nearly 17,500 students. The campus had needs in every category, but did not have a vision of how the university could expand in a coherent and sustainable manner which connected its 360 acre sprawling and hilly campus. The resultant plan was a sustainable framework for land use, connectivity, open space, environmental, transportation, and safety. Over the last 15 years, the university has been transformed and has seen a 34% increase in undergraduate enrollment while maintaining a 17 to 1 student/faculty ratio. Total enrollment has risen from 17,500 to 22,400 students. On campus housing has increased from 24% to 26% of undergraduates adding more than 2,600 beds or a 76% increase in beds. The campus has made strategic investments in infrastructure, safety, and open space which connects the campus in a more pedestrian, bicycle, and transit oriented approach. Surface parking has shifted from the core to parking garages at the perimeter giving the university the ability to utilize its limited land resources more effectively. Sensitive landscapes such as the Towson Run stream valley and steep slopes have been set aside as natural areas which will be preserved and enhanced. Handicapped accessibility has been greatly enhanced across the hilly campus with pathways, interconnected buildings, and strategic drop-off points. The hilly campus made the athletics precinct and the West Village seem far away. the plan proposed to cross busy streets connecting hilltop to hilltop which gave the plan the nickname of the "bridges of Baltimore County."

Eckerd College
Sitting on Tampa Bay, Eckerd College's tag line is "Think Outside." While being on the bay makes for a beautiful setting, it also makes the campus susceptible to severe weather and flooding. This means that investments in exiting buildings must be weighed against safety and replacement costs. Any new buildings must be raised six feet above grade to stay out of the storm surge. The resulting master plan seeks a balance of new construction and limited renovations which manage campus strategic needs to cash flow. Having worked with the College for a dozen years, we have advised them on phased projects which replace out of date buildings, improve the campus environment, restore sensitive landscapes which mitigate storm surges, and create a campus where they can think outside.

"improving the daily life of med students" University of Southern California Health Campus
The University of Southern California Health Campus is adjacent to the LA County Coroner's office and the LA Veteran's Administration Hospital. The Keck Hospital sits on the eastern side of the campus with the remaining campus dedicated to medical education. Residents must cross busy roads and pass through service alleys to get from their medical schools to the hospitals. They have limited nearby housing options. For families visiting patients, there is no nearby quality hotel. Retail is nearly non-existent to serve the campus or the adjacent neighborhood. The proposed plan corrects this by connecting the campus, adding medical student and employees housing, building a new hotel and conference center, providing retail and service options, and inserting collaboration and gathering spaces for the students creating a well connected, safe, and more robust campus.

"intuitive circulation" Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center
Johns Hopkins acquired the Bayview Medical Center as an extension of the main East Baltimore Academic Medical Center Campus. The regional hospital was designed with shared rooms and limited outpatient capacity. Circulation was confusing and often led to more stress for visitors and patients. The proposed plan created a more intuitive approach to the patient and visitor experience by creating in inpatient loop and a separate outpatient loop with clear signage, convenient parking, and straightforward paths to destinations. Making the hospital as hospitable as possible.

For more than two decades, Hord Coplan Macht has been the campus Landscape Architect, creating master plans, site, and landscape designs which manifest the core mission of the university: emphasis on academic excellence, the importance of the liberal arts, and cura personalis—the education of the whole person.

Founded in 1782 under the patronage of George Washington, Washington College is among the nation’s leading liberal arts institutions. Located on over 100 acres in the heart of historic Chestertown, Maryland, the character and history of the Chesapeake region define and inform the campus experience. In collaboration with faculty, staff and administration, the Landscape Architecture studio at HCM has worked for over twelve years to define and enhance those emotional connections, while responding to the needs of the modern campus and today’s student. The Landscape studio has utilized native and adaptive plantings and classic brick and stone hardscapes to knit together the various campus spaces to create a cohesive campus character. Our graphic design for the signage at the campus visitors center uses the first president’s signature as well as a large George Washington sculpture reinforces the identity of the college and its tie to one of our founding fathers.
