Kearny PD: Arrests made in home burglaries By Kevin A. Canessa Jr.

n investigation into two forced-entry residential burglaries in Kearny and an attempted burglary in Union culminated in the arrest of two armed suspects following a multi-agency pursuit that ended in Newark, Det. Sgt. Michal Gontarczuk, public-information officer of the Kearny Police Department, said. According to Gontarczuk: In the early-morning hours of Oct. 17,

2025, burglars are alleged to have forced their way into two occupied Kearny homes. From one of these residences, a 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG was stolen. This same stolen vehicle was later used during an attempted residential burglary in Union. Kearny Police Department detectives, utilizing investigative technology to track the stolen Mercedes, located the vehicle in Newark. When detectives attempted to surveil the vehicle, it fled, initiating a police pursuit. The incident

evolved into a larger, multi-agency pursuit which ultimately ended when the vehicle crashed at the intersection of 14th and Speedway avenues in Newark. The vehicle’s two male occupants fled the crash scene on foot; however, thanks to the assistance of the Newark Police Department, New Jersey State Police, Essex County Sheriff’s Office, Union Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations, both suspects were captured and arrested. Franklin students earn $5K in gym equipment from Red Bulls

ranklin School recently celebrated a major achievement after being named the top-performing school in the Red Bulls on the Move fitness challenge, led by the New York Red Bulls soccer team of the MLS. Throughout the month-long initiative, Franklin’s fifth-graders collectively logged more than 6.8 million steps, earning the school a $5,000 award to enhance their physical education and wellness programs. The opportunity to enter the challenge was initially brought to district administrations from the Red Bulls organization. Denise Pais Sotelo, district supervisor of Physical Education and Health, shared the challenge with the Physical Education department and Franklin Elementary’s team eagerly took on the challenge with its fifth-graders. “This recognition reflects the teamwork, dedication and spirit of the entire Franklin community,” Superintendent of Schools Flora Encarnacao said. “Our students and staff embraced this challenge with enthusiasm, demonstrating the importance

of prioritizing physical health and well-being while proving that making healthy choices is both fun and rewarding. We are very proud of their accomplishment and the example they have set for the entire district and Kearny community.” Excitement reached new heights when Franklin was announced as the winner of the challenge, with students and staff attending a New York Red Bulls match at the Red Bull Arena Saturday, Oct. 4, for a special check presentation. The $5,000 prize will help fund new gym equipment for all students to enjoy, starting on the PTA-sponsored field day. Throughout the month, the staff motivated students to stay active by using a Google spreadsheet, created by faculty member Mrs. Davis, to track progress and weekly check-ins to encourage participation and celebrate milestones. Honored as the school’s top stepper during the challenge was sixth-grader Vani Sharma, a talented and dedicated student, who completed 502,733 steps throughout the month of

May. Sharma is a member of the Franklin band and performed “America the Beautiful” on flute during this year’s Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony. The Red Bulls on the Move victory has united the Franklin Elementary community in

celebration and pride. “One of Franklin’s main goals is to foster a positive and inclusive climate that extends beyond classrooms to families and the wider community,” Principal Yvonne Cali said. “This accomplishment was not

only uplifting for our fifth-graders but also a source of pride and joy for all Franklin students and families. At the game, every attendee wore a bright smile and felt a sense of pride for what we achieved together as a school community.”

woman was stabbed following a dispute at the Marshalls store on Passaic Avenue in Kearny on Oct. 11, but her injuries appear to be superficial, Det. Sgt. Michal Gontarczuk, the KPD’s publicinformation officer, said. According to Gontarczuk: Sgt. Kelly along with Officers Mauricio, Sosa, Cazares and Sondej, responded to the store on reports of a stabbing. In the parking lot, police came across a woman in bloody clothing, who was suffering from multiple puncture wounds to the torso. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital and the wounds were determined to be non-life threatening. The alleged perpetrator was located in the Marshalls bathroom, with a kitchen knife laying atop the baby changing station. She was detained while witness statements were obtained. After investigation confirmed the woman in the bathroom

POLICE BEAT to be the stabber, she was arrested and transported to the Kearny Police Department. Amber I. Thompson, 25, of Newark, was charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of weapons, possession of weapons for unlawful purposes and endangering another person. The knife was secured as evidence and Thompson was later transported to the Hudson County Jail, South Kearny. It was later determined the incident was spurred by a dispute over the movement speed of the checkout line, which led to Thompson threatening to harm the victim “outside.” Reportedly, while the victim and her family alighted from the store, toward their parked vehicle, Thompson purchased a set of kitchen knives, removed one from the box, then pursued the victim in the parking lot, ultimately stabbing her multiple times.

he Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Internal Affairs Unit has arrested four individuals — including a Hudson County correctional police officer — following a narcotics investigation at the Hudson County Correctional Facility, Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello said.

hat police found after they were alerted to possible unsafe living conditions in a Lyndhurst home turned out to be worse than one could imagine, as two people were found to be living in uninhabitable conditions, with children and pets that appear to have been suffering from neglect, Capt. Paul Haggerty, the Lyndhurst Police Department’s public-information officer said. At around 11 p.m., Oct. 12, 2025, Lyndhurst police were sent to a residence on a request for welfare check by a family member who was concerned about the living conditions of the home. Upon arrival, police found the house to be totally uninhabitable after the wife, Sara Gorphinkle, was taken to New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus prior to police arrival for treatment. Dogs found in the home were emaciated, kids were there and appeared to be unkempt, drug paraphernalia was found around first floor apartment, the residence was in complete disarray with intolerable odors and dog feces was strewn about. The responding officers, Haggerty says, were overcome by

what they were faced with and found the living conditions to be “emotionally disturbing.” James Wapinksy, of Lyndhurst, was charged with possession of CDS, possession of paraphernalia, other drug paraphernalia offenses, endangering the welfare of child and neglect of child. He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail, Hackensack. Sarafina Gorfinkle, of Lyndhurst, was charged the same charges as Wapinsky and was checked into New Bridge. She was served there and held. She has not been processed yet by police. “Our animal cruelty officer will be following up regarding additional charges for the animals. Two dogs (a husky and pitbull,)” Haggerty said.

n recent years, the Hudson County Tournament has proven to be successful in helping Harrison prepare for the upcoming state tournament. While certainly valuable, it was an experience that usually ended in the semifinals for the Blue Tide. This year’s county tournament has brought so much more to the Blue Tide. For the first time since 2021, Harrison is heading to the Hudson County final as the third-seeded Blue Tide defeated second-seeded Union City, 3-2, on Saturday. It is Harrison’s fifth trip to the final since the tournament started in 2009. The victory earns Harrison a trip to Sports Illustrated Stadium on Oct. 28 when it faces off against twotime reigning county champion St. Peter’s Prep, ranked No. 2 in the state by NJ.com, at 7:30 p.m. “One of the things we were saying to them this whole week was let’s win this semifinal game,” Harrison head coach Mike Rusek said. “We haven’t done it for a few years, and you always have an excuse as to why something goes wrong, but when it’s all said and done we’ve always been a good contender in (the semifinals), but we did not win it. “We said to them, no excuses

this time around, let’s just get on a bus and go win a hard away game and earn the right to be in that county final. I’m really proud of our team for doing that.” Junior Ezequiel Soto had two goals and an assist in the win. The junior snapped a 2-2 tie in the 73rd minute when he scored off a feed from Kiandry Aban. Soto, who moved to Harrison from South America over the summer, has been on a torrid scoring pace in recent days, racking up five goals and seven assists in the past five games, all won by the Blue Tide. “I think it took him the month of September to just figure everything out. I don’t know if we’ve ever had anyone like him.” For the season, Soto has 16 goals and nine assists, while also generating significant defensive attention that has opened up space for others such as Aban, Pedro Barreto Reis and Samuel DeSouza. With a large senior class, a large part of which has started for three or four seasons, Belleville head coach Brain Antab knew this was the year for this veteran group to do something special if it could maintain a sharp focus every week. Friday night saw the Bucs do just that when it went to Kearny and defeated the Kardinals, 4021, to clinch the Super Football Conference Ivy White Division title. It is the first division title in more than 15 years for Belleville, which improved to 7-0 on the season. While teams in the Ivy divi-

sions are ineligible to compete in the state tournament, the divisions’ top four teams do have their own postseason for an overall league championship and on Thursday, Belleville will have

He’s a very special player.” Abu-Hakmeh was coaching in Lyndhurst’s recreation program, when he first saw Dasler Jr. play roughly eight years ago and took over as the Bears’ head coach when Dasler Jr. was an eighth grader. Dasler Jr. immediately found a role on varsity as a freshman, scoring three goals with three assists. As a sophomore, he had 13 goals and 14 assists for a Lyndhurst team that made a surprising run to the North 2, Group 2 semifinals. It was last year

Dasler Jr.’s 31 goals are currently tied for the most in the state. He’s scored at least one goal in all, but one game this season and has six hat tricks, highlighted by his three goal, one assist performance in an overtime win over Harrison. The 31 goals put Dasler Jr. within striking distance of Lyndhurst’s single-season goals record, which Mutsoli set with 39 in 2021. “Robby has had his signature on every single game we played so far,” said Abu-Hakmen. “He’s a very special player.”

Kathleen Toner Dunphy Kathleen Toner Dunphy, 90, of Kearny and Long Beach Township, died peacefully at home in Kearny on Oct. 16, 2025. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Kathleen was born in Newark to Irish immigrants Katherine and Francis Toner, and was raised in Kearny. In addition to her parents, she was also pre-deceased by her beloved husband, John. P. “Jack” Dunphy Jr., originally of Harrison; their daughter Jaqueline “Jackie” Dunphy Howell, of Kearny; and her six siblings, Betty Doris, of Nutley; Buddy Toner, of Orange, Texas; Peggy Northrop, of Norwalk, Connecticut; Bert Toner, of Kearny; Jackie Challenger, of Miami; and Adrienne Elalouf, also of Miami. Kathleen is survived by five of her six children, Maryrose “Roey” (Ron) Hine, Kathleen “Kitty” (Charlie) Kolarsick, Patrick (Ginny) Dunphy, Brendan (Beverly) Dunphy and Terence (Jennifer) Dunphy. She is also survived by seven granddaughters, Caitlin, Kelly, Tara, Morgan, Alana, Maggie and Molly; two grandsons Aidan and Liam; four great-grandchildren, Katherine, Meghan, Colin and Riley; and many nephews and nieces. Kathleen will be remembered for her sense of humor, for her strong love of family and for her wide circle of friends. She formed many lifelong, close friendships from her time at St. Cecilia High School in Kearny, to Long Beach Island and beyond. She also served as past president and board member of the Hudson County Area Vocational-Technical Schools. John F. Heraut John F. Heraut of North Arlington died Oct. 15, 2025. He was 89. Relatives and friends gathered at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, Kearny. She attended Kearny High School and Burroughes Business School in Newark, graduating in 1953. She worked for the Worthington Corporation in North Arlington then at Congoleum-Nairn Corp., where she worked as a mail runner. She married Gordon L. Bell on Feb. 6, 1960 at Kearny Methodist Church and gave birth to two sons Kenneth (1962), and Kurt (1972). They lived in Sayreville from 1964 until 1969 when her husband took a job transfer to Pennsylvania and relocated to

Chalfont, Pennsylvania. Helen was a homemaker raising children and enjoyed choir singing, especially opera. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Philadelphia Chapter (1964-1966) and the Bucks County Chorale Society (1977-1986). She divorced in 1979. In 1980, she remarried but the marriage was annulled only after a short time. She was employed by Delaware Valley College in the cafeteria (1978-1980), for M.W. Wood, Inc. (1980-1981), and as an electronics tester at Neshaminy Electronics Corporation in Fur-

Two from Kearny, two others charged by AG in home invasion with injuries

Four men — including two from Kearny — have been charged for their roles in a home invasion and auto theft that left a homeowner injured, Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin, the Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ) and the Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor announced. John Duncan, 20, of Kearny; Daniel Chipelo, 21, of Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania; and Kasib Higgs, 20, of Old Bridge are each charged with conspiracy, home invasion burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, theft of movable property and aggravated assault. They are also charged, along with Jason Cathcart, 22, of Kearny, with the use of a person 17-years-old or younger to commit a crime. Cathcart is additionally charged with conspiracy and receiving a stolen motor vehicle. All four defendants were indicted by a state grand jury on Sept. 17, 2025. According to documents filed in this case, at approximately 4:28 a.m., March 1, 2025, the Fair Lawn Police Department received a report of a home invasion and later notified the New Jersey State Police (NJSP) Motor Vehicle Crimes North Unit, part of the NJSP Auto Theft Task Force (ATTF). It is alleged the homeowners were asleep in their home when they were awakened by the sound of their front door being broken in. One of the homeowners allegedly saw a group of individuals getting into his black 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and a

black 2023 BMW X5, collectively valued at over $75,000. The homeowner attempted to stop the suspects by putting himself between the cars and their escape route. The suspects allegedly tried to hit the homeowner with the vehicles as they fled. The homeowner was able to avoid being struck by the vehicles by diving out of the way, but suffered lacerations to his knees and legs as a result. Before fleeing, Chipelo, Higgs and Duncan also allegedly stole items from the homeowner’s residence and vehicles. Chipelo, Higgs, and Duncan were allegedly linked to the home invasion and motor vehicle thefts through a combination of electronic and physical surveillance, common clothing, and cellular data. Further investigation by the NJSP ATTF revealed all four defendants, Chipelo, Higgs, Duncan and Cathcart, allegedly employed the use of a juvenile, as they all worked together to receive the stolen vehicles, with Cathcart also accused of driving one of the stolen vehicles. “The charges in this case show how breaking into homes to steal cars elevates the danger faced by the public,” l Platkin said. “In this case, the homeowner heard the break-in, and when he tried to intercede, he was injured. We will vigorously prosecute anyone who jeopardizes public safety like this.”

A Kearny patrolman’s instincts led to the arrest of a suspicious man in South Kearny near a piece of property that has seen a recent uptick in burglaries, Det. Sgt. Mike Gontarczuk said. According to Gontarczuk: On Sunday, Oct. 19, at 11 p.m., Officer Khonsura Allen was patrolling South Kearny near the PSEG plant that has recently been subjected to a number of burglaries. There, he says he observed a suspicious hooded man walking on the construction zone portion of the PSEG plant where there is no sidewalk. and found a blue backpack containing copper wire and burglar tools, a breach in the perimeter fence where it was cut and a 62-year-old man from Irvington who was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested and once at KPD HQ, officers learned he had originally provided a false alias and his real name was Albert Jackson. Under this real name, officers found he was wanted by Essex County for burglary. Charges of drug paraphernalia possession and hindering apprehension were generated and Jackson was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility, South Kearny, while the incident remains under investigation.

She finally relocated in 2019 to the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. She kept active singing, walking, knitting, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed good conversations, especially politics, and being in the company of friends. She is survived by her sons Ken (Beverly) of Daytona Beach, Florida; Kurt (Michelle) of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, a step-granddaughter and six great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews in PA, NJ, NC and IN, and a goddaughter in ME. She was predeceased by her father, who died in Lake Worth, Florida, (age 67) in 1976; a sister, Norma Jean Muhly born in 1937 died shortly after childbirth; her mother who passed at age 87 in 1998; her stepfather George Carlin who died in 1987; and her twin sister Ruth who died in 1991. Cremation is being handled by Sheetz Funeral Home in Mt. Joy. No memorial service is planned. Donations may be made to the National Cancer Society. Internment will take place at Hillside Cemetery in Lyndhurst. A private Celebration of Life luncheon for family is planned at a later date. He made Kearny his home in 1962, where he built a life filled with love, laughter and cherished memories. Anthony is survived by his beloved daughters, Jessica and Jenna; his son-in-law, Steven; his loving sister, Domenica Preuster and her husband, Robert; and his adored grandchildren, Elias and Malakai. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Antoinette and Anthony; his brothers Lawrence, Richard, Carmen and Jerome; and his sister Cynthia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association in Anthony’s memory. His legacy of love, humor and kindness will live on forever in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
