earny kicked off Portuguese-American Heritage Month with a flag raising at American Revolution Bicentennial Park. Mayor Carol Jean Doyle (right) was joined by Council Members Marytrine DeCastro, Jose Rodrigues, George Zapata, Fred Esteves and Stathis Theodoropoulos, along with members of the Portuguese Cultural Association, for a ceremonial raising of the Portuguese Flag. The celebration continued with the Portugal Day Parade, which featured traditional music, folk dance (left image) and a performance by Sonhos de Portugal (‘Dreams of Portugal.’) Portugal Day, also known as Dia de Camões, honors the life and legacy of Luís Vaz de Camões Portugal’s national poet and an noted symbol of national pride.
