Franklin Elementary School continues decade-long commitment to lupus awareness
The Franklin Elementary School community gathered recently to continue its tradition of supporting lupus research and education. Since 2015, students and staff have participated in an annual “Dress Down Day,” which took place on May 8, and raised $401 to benefit the Kelly Fund for Lupus.
The initiative began after student Miah Andrade was diagnosed with the disease, sparking a school-wide mission that grew into a town-wide tradition. To participate in the annual event, students donate $1 and staff members donate $5 to fund critical research.
“Our school remains dedicated to raising awareness for lupus because we believe in the power of unity and the importance of supporting our neighbors,” Principal Yvonne Cali said.
Efforts soon caught wider attention, prompting Elizabeth Santa Cruz, Miah’s mother, to become an integral part of the school’s mission. Through her outreach, she coordinated partnership visits with the Red Bulls Street Team, who have visited Franklin School in past years to perform and speak to the students about the impor-
tance of health and awareness.
The school’s advocacy expanded into an impactful partnership in 2017 when the community met newscaster Brenda Blackmon, who founded the Kelly Fund for Lupus in honor of her own daughter’s battle with the disease. During a visit to the school, Blackmon launched “The Camera Project,” distributing cameras to a fourth-grade class and encouraging them to document their surroundings. Those photographs ultimately inspired her bilingual book, “Awareness/Conciencia,” highlighting the unique perspectives of Franklin School students.
The town of Kearny has embraced this cause as well, a tradition originally sparked years. To kick off this year’s efforts, community members, local leaders and school advocates gathered at Kearny Town Hall for the annual lupus ribbon-cutting ceremony, with attendees wearing purple to spread visibility and ensure the spirit of advocacy remains a core value for future generations. Franklin Elementary School continues to champion these efforts each year, ensuring that the spirit of advocacy remains a core value for future generations.
