The Township of Belleville now has its third financial overseer in as many years. On July 12, the governing body voted to hire Frank DeMaria as chief financial officer in place of Kimberly Kientz, who resigned recently after spending about a year and a half on the job. Kientz had taken over for Judith Curran,

now serving as tax collector for the township of Bloomfield. DeMaria, who was appointed Belleville’s chief financial officer July 12, will serve in a part-time capacity at $100 per hour, according to township manager Anthony Iacono. DeMaria will put in anywhere from 10 to 30 hours per work, the manager said. DeMaria has most recently served as audi-

he Nutley Board of Commissioners welcomed the Nutley High School varsity and seventh- and eighth-grade softball teams July 5 at Town Hall for a gathering to honor both teams’ outstanding achievements during their 2022 seasons. The NJSIAA North 2 Group 3 State Sectional Champions NHS team enjoyed a successful season, finishing with a 21-6 record. The team finished as second-ranked in Essex County, fourth in Group 3 and 17th in the state. The seventh- and eighth-grade team, meanwhile, concluded its season with a similar record, with a 10-1-1 record, en route to a Suburban League championship. “This is a very auspicious evening,” Commissioner Mauro G. Tucci said. “Not only are we honoring one Nutley team, which is more than anyone ever expected, but we are honoring two teams. First is the Nutley High School varsity softball team. This is a team that believed in themselves as individuals, believed in the concept of team, believed in their managers and coaches. They probably worked harder than any other team in the history of Nutley girls softball. And

On July 11 at 8:55 a.m., Officers Kevin Carvalho, Harold Azurdia, Ryan Brady and Sgt. Pat Becker were dispatched to a private home for a domestic dispute. Officers learned a 66-year-old father had an argument with his 34-year-old son over the brand of water the son bought. At some point, it was alleged that the son hit the father over the head with a dust pan causing a small scalp laceration. At another point, it was alleged the father threw a sledgehammer at his son, but missed him. Both men were arrested. The alleged hammer-thrower was charged with aggravated assault and weapon possession charges, and later released with a summons. The alleged dustpan-slapper was charged with simple assault, but his complaint was lodged on a warrant, which committed him to the Hudson County Jail. n On July 6 at 4:24 p.m., Officer Kevin Carvalho took a

report from a Teaneck man that he was the victim of an armed flim-flam the day before at Kearny Walmart. The victim said he parked at Walmart and a red 2-door Mercedes stopped in front of him. The driver of the Mercedes pointed out old damage on the victim’s car and offered to fix it for $750. The victim, believing he was getting a bargain for workmanlike-quality repairs, agreed to the deal. The suspect began to work on the car, but later went with the victim to Autozone, where he bought a can of spray paint that did not quite match the color of the victim’s car. The victim began to have doubts about the quality of work he was getting and said the deal was off. When the victim tried to compromise with a $200 payment for the work already performed, the suspect allegedly brandished a silver revolver. The victim felt he had no choice and gave the suspect all the money he had just withdrawn from an ATM – $770. Reportedly, the guntoting traveling repairman then continued to work on the victim’s car before leaving.

Dets. Jon Dowie and Dave Bush investigated further and identified the suspect as Miller Frank, 54, of Kearny. Frank was arrested at police headquarters on July 7 and charged with robbery and weapon possession charges. Frank was later remanded to the county jail in South Kearny. n On July 7 at 12:52 p.m., Officers Mat Lopez and Det. Jordenson Jean responded to a shoplifting complaint at ShopRite. Store management alleged that Meshach Q. Hopkins, 31, of Newark, stole $5.65 worth of spring water

and tape and fled the store through a back door in the receiving area. The officers quickly located Hopkins walking on Passaic Avenue in East Newark and arrested him. Officers later learned from East Newark Police Chief Anthony Monteiro a woman reported to him that while she was stopped in traffic at Passaic and Johnston avenues in Kearny, Hopkins allegedly tried to get into her car. For about two decades, a trailer erected on the site at 50 Belgrove Drive, just off Johnston Avenue, served as the town’s second police precinct, whose primary mission was to concentrate on safety issues involving residents of the First and Second wards. Eventually, though, the facility fell into disuse and, for the past couple of years, the parcel’s plaza has been a focal point for COVID vaccinations and food distribution for needy families run by the town Health Department. Now, the town wants to pursue that direction and, hoping to make use of a $724,000 Community Development Block Grant provided through Hudson County, undertake the process of creating a community health annex at that property. A grant application was filed last year. Plans call for taking down the existing 780-square-foot trailer and to “build a new one in the same footprint,” Second Ward Councilman Peter P. Santana said. Presumably, space behind

the trailer now used for parking would be retained for the same function for staff and visitors. “The idea would be to serve the people in the First and Second wards,” he said, “where there is definitely a need for public health services. Having to travel to the main health offices on the other side of town is far for many of our residents.” Annarelly McNair, Kearny’s health director, agreed having such a facility available “would help serve the lower- to-moderateincome residents from that area, along with residents from East Newark whose population we also serve.” Since January, McNair said, the Health Department has done food distribution on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from that site, averaging 230 recipients each date, so most residents should already be familiar with the location.

At the July 12 meeting, the Township Council also voted to introduce an ordinance to clear the way for certain easements “for public access to a plaza and township access to utilities” at 630 and 632 Washington Ave., which Belleville has designated as a redevelopment area. The mayor and Town Council approved a long-term control plan last year which was submitted to the NJDEP for approval which would reduce/ eliminate combined sewer overflow events. However, the Clean Water Act is an unfunded federal mandate. Whatever the town does not get through state and federal grants, it will have to fund itself. Therefore, it is important to seek any and all funding opportunities.” And that’s where this opportunity comes in. “The grant has several eligible categories, including ‘Urban Forest Canopy’ and ‘Water Quality Enhancement,’” Marks said. “Kearny is particularly well positioned for this category. The town has lost a lot of its tree canopy over the last several decades due to the age of trees, storms and development. For example, Hurricane Ida, last year, knocked over more than 100 shade trees in Kearny alone. “The town will be proposing to plant up to 300 native shade trees to replace lost trees and bioswale/ rain gardens to capture stormwater runoff. If funded, the combination of new shade trees and rain gardens would capture stormwater before it goes into the combined sewer system and help the town comply with

the Clean Water Act. “The new shade trees and rain gardens will also reduce flooding downstream in flood prone neighborhoods in town. The investment would also have a co-benefit of beautifying neighborhoods, improving property values and shading/ cooling homes to reduce air-conditioning usage and electrical demand. Grant awards are between $250,000 and $5 million. We are still formulating the budget, but it could be up to a half million.” And this is where the two teenagers Feorenzo met come in. Heather and Rafael Matos first knew that their younger son, Cristian, was a special talent when in a coaches pitch game, the then-7-year-old launched a home run over the left field fence at Belleville Recreation Field, hitting an unsuspecting car some 175 feet away from home plate. Next week, Cristian will get to show the whole baseball world what his family, friends and his hometown have known for a very long time. Now 12, Matos is traveling

more than 8,000 miles to represent Team USA at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-12 Baseball World Cup in Tainan, Taiwan, scheduled for July 29 to Aug. 7. Some 18 players from across the country were selected for Team USA July 1, with Matos, a lefty-hitting catcher, being the lone player selected from the Northeast. “It was unreal. I was so nervous and when I was one of the last to be called, I was shaking,” said Cristian, who has grown to 5-foot-10 and 150 pounds. “Once I got called, it was a huge sigh of

relief.” “It’s definitely been great to be a part of it. You think about Little League and Little League World Series, events like that,” Rafael Matos said. “But playing for Team USA with those letters across your chest is something that’s really phenomenal. From there, he was selected to compete in the National Team Identification Series last summer in Cary, North Carolina.

“I think after I got past the regional tryouts that I realized how good I was,” Cristian said. “It actually clicked then and I was honored to be there.” This summer, Cristian has been playing with Phoenix Baseball, a 14-U team based out of Tappan, New York. On Phoenix Baseball, Cristian gets to play with his older brother, Rafi, a first baseman/pitcher. It is the first time the two brothers have gotten to play together regularly since Belleville Little League in 2019. The age gap between the two didn’t stop Cristian from wanting to play on the same team as Rafi, who just completed his freshman year at Belleville

“Trichiasis” is the medical term for misdirected or abnormally positioned eyelashes. Jacqueline Dunphy-Howell Jackie Dunphy-Howell died July 12, 2022. She was 65. She lived most of her life in Kearny before moving to Nutley two years ago. Arrangements are by the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, Kearny. At Jackie’s request, there was a private cremation and there will be a memorial service Thursday, July 21, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Jackie loved life! She cherished her family, friends and students — and the students’ families as well. A proud graduate of Rosemont College, she held a master’s degree and taught at Lincoln School in Kearny for many years. The positive influence she had for so many is countless. Jackie’s life was all about smiles and random acts of kindness. Beloved daughter of Kathleen (nee Toner) and the late Jack Dunphy, she is survived by her cherished daughters Alana and Molly Howell. In 1939, she began dating the love of her life, John Dowie, who returned from the Pacific Theater of World War II, with a Purple Heart. They were married for 65 years until his death in 2015. Together, they embodied the American Dream, both graduating from Kearny High School, raising two children and sharing long careers in public service for the town of Kearny — Anne in the Construction Code Department and secretary to the Planning and Zoning boards. “Nana,” as her grandchildren called her, would advise them to “always maintain your dignity” and to put any money she gave them right in the bank. She was a devoted supporter of opportunities for young women through her work with the Philanthropic & Educational Organization (PEO) and volunteered at the Jupiter Lighthouse well into her 90s. She was also crazy for Frank Sinatra, who she most enjoyed listening to with a Dewars on the rocks. Anne was predeceased by her husband John, her two big sisters Gertrude and Mary and her parents Frank and Catherine Kelly. She leaves behind her son, retired Kearny Police Chief John Dowie and his wife Ann of Kearny; her daughter Suzanne DeLuca and husband Jeffrey of Jupiter, Florida; and her five grandchildren Catherine and Jonathan Dowie and Jeff, Joshua and Jesse

Hopkins was charged with shoplifting and two counts of criminal attempt (theft and burglary). He was later released with a summons. n On July 7 at 9:15 p.m., Officers Ryan Wilson, Michael Ore, Ruben Rivera and Sgt. Ben Wuelfing were dispatched to report of a dispute with

a trespasser at the Kuehne Chemical Company in South Kearny. The officers learned Lambo H. Jordan, 25, of Jersey City, allegedly followed a company vehicle through a security gate when it opened to allow a delivery. Jordan and the driver had reportedly had a traffic dispute earlier on the highway leading to Jordan following the company truck to the property. Jordan was arrested for defiant trespass because Kuehne Company is subject to U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Security regulations and notice against trespass is clearly posted. Jordan was later released with a summons.

n On July 9 at 10:26 a.m., Officer Jason Rodrigues was dispatched to a report of a man exposing himself at Kearny Avenue and Afton Street. There, the officer found Daniel P. McKeown, 53, of Kearny, who reported that he had just been fixing his pants. McKeown was the subject of a burglary arrest warrant from Hudson County. He was arrested, fed and then turned over to the Hudson County Sheriff. n On July 11 at 10:08 p.m., Officers Bryan San Martin and Mariana Figueiredo were dispatched to Halstead Street and Belgrove Drive on a report of a man asleep behind the wheel of a car. After detecting signs of alcohol impairment, Officer San Martin attempted to have Calva-Rivera perform field sobriety tests, but Calva-Rivera could not complete them. Calva-Rivera was arrested and charged with DWI, refusal to submit to breath testing and unlicensed driving. He was later released with summonses.
