P

resident Joseph R. Biden Jr. was in Kearny Monday, Oct. 25, 2021, and his somewhat stealth visit coincided with a need to push forward his mammoth infrastructure bill and to heap praise on Gov. Philip D. Murphy, who stands for re-election this week against Republican Jack M. Ciattarelli. Biden landed aboard Air Force I — a smaller version of the plane, not the usual Boeing 747 — at around 10:30 a.m. that day at Newark Liberty International Airport. Though low

clouds made it difficult to view, the plane could be seen descending along the Meadowlands/Schuyler Avenue corridor that day as it traveled southward. We tried, unsuccessfully, to ascertain the last time a sitting U.S. president visited Kearny. Biden spoke, at length, to a crowd estimated to be about 50 people, at an NJ Transit repair station in South Kearny. One of the fortunate few in attendance was Kearny Mayor Alberto G. Santos, who says Photo by Alberto G. Santos the United States Secret Service did a fine President Joseph R. Biden Jr. is seen here speaking to a crowd of about 50 supSee BIDEN, Page 18

KARDINALS RULE HUDSON SOCCER Boys & girls footy teams win county championships at Red Bull Arena Story & photos By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com When Nico Gomez was a little boy, he would constantly go to Red Bull Arena to watch his favorite team, the New York Red Bulls, play. So when Gomez learned that his Kearny High School soccer team was getting the incredible opportunity to play at the area’s soccer Mecca last Thursday night in the Hudson County Tournament finale against arch rival Harrison, the junior forward was more than thrilled. “I came here every weekend

when I was little,” Gomez said. “I always watched the Red Bulls and dreamed what it would be like to play here. It was like a dream come true.” Gomez’s dream became even more of a reality when he was able to get his dyedblond head onto an incredible 55-yard crossing pass from Alan Castillo just 1:09 into the overtime session for the game-winning golden goal, giving Kearny a thrilling 2-1 See KARDS, Page 14
