center is undergoing a massive facelift — and once complete, it will be home to a place that will be envy of its neighbors. Last week, The Observer sat down with the two Larrys and we took a tour of the place, where work is already underway and the transformation apparent. The two say they hope the place is ready by summer’s end — and

CATCHING SOME FISH WITH B

ill Abbott (proprietor of Abbott Insurance in Lyndhurst) and son Willie have always had a tremendous father-son relationship — since the younger Abbott was a wee lad. But when it came time for Bill to share his passion for fishing, he wasn’t exactly sure how his son would take to it all. “He was 4 when I took him fishing for the first time,” Bill says. “I was really hoping he would enjoy it. It’s the kind of thing where he’s either going to love it and develop a passion for it — or he was going to say, ‘yeah, dad, that was fun, but one time is enough.’” But it turned out Willie didn’t just want that one-time experience with his father. Instead and in fact, it developed, indeed, into a passion for Willie, so much so that the moment he could — around his 18th birthday — Willie prepared for and glowingly passed the United States Coast Guard’s captain’s examination and is now operating charters during two fishing seasons in the southern portion of Jersey. “At first, I fished from a dock and then from a boat and I loved it since I was a child,” Willie says. “Then, as around when I was 15, I began

working on a boat, mating, on various levels.” That led to his licensure as a captain where he was tested on three areas — navigation, plotting and the rules of the road. Since he’s a captain now, he’s able to run the fishing charters. During the tuna season, Willie says the charter goes way out to sea, sometimes 80 miles or more. He says fishers will almost feel like they’re nowhere near Jersey because of what you’ll see out there, including sea turtles, sharks, whales. Willie also says people on his charter are also amazed by the waters so far off shore. “We’re not used to it in New Jersey, but that far out, the water is so clear,” he says. “You can see 60 feet down it’s so clear. It’s like being in the Caribbean.” The charter boat he uses is quite modern, Willie says, and it’s more than comfy. “It’s fast and comfortable,”

he says. “We can get up to 35 mph. All of the seating is set up to create comfort. And we do achieve that.” During the spring season, Willie’s charters depart Clark’s Landing in Point Pleasant. Kearny’s Elks Lodge tops in the nation

hile there are nearly 2,000 Elks lodges in America, only one can be known as the best lodge. For the Kearny Elks, that’s now a reality. The Elks Grand Lodge in Chicago announced winners of the 2020-2021 All American Lodge contest and Kearny placed first in Division 1 (smaller sized lodges.) “The term All American means you are the best that you can be. Kearny earned that designation through its hard work promoting the programs of the Elks. This is the highest honor in Elkdom. The contest is a measure to each Elk lodge across the Untied States and how it impacts its community,” Chris Brown, former exulted ruler of the lodge, says. “Three of the categories measured in the contest are community service, supporting veterans and youth programs, as well as service and dedication to

special-needs children.” During a pandemic, challenges were even greater. Yet the Kearny Elks met every single one of them and ran drive-up food distribution events, along with other charities in town, and collected enormous amounts

of food to distribute to those in need. “We continue to do so,” Brown says. “Last year 80,906 items of food were donated through the Elks. Grant money received from Grand Lodge helped to stock local food pantries.”

As many veterans in VA hospitals were also affected by the pandemic — including being unable to receive visitors, taking no outside trips, etc. — the Kearny Elks cooked and prepped meals and delivered them along with the North Central District Elks to East Orange VA Hospital. They also brought along various sundry items like snacks, puzzle books, T-shirts, underwear, socks and other items. Many homeless veterans who the Elks assisted in finding housing for were also delivered furniture and welcome home kits, which had towels, sheets, dishes, microwaves, toasters, mops, brooms, dish racks vacuums — just about anything needed to settle into a new place. The Elks also used many grants they applied thru Grand Lodge to do these things. On St Patrick’s Day, the Kearny Elks cooked and sent corned beef and cabbage dinners to the East Orange VA. Donations of milk were delivered by the Elks to senior citizens in town. For Valentine’s Day, the lodge delivered homemade cards from Daisy Troop 12800, Boy and Girl Scout Troops 38 and the NJ CP CTR in Belleville with valentines treats and sundry items. Grants were also used to supply books and winter coats for children in town as well as boots and socks

for veterans through Kearny VOICE, a veterans-outreach referral service sponsored by the Joseph E. Frobisher Jr. American Legion Post 99. Special-needs children were greatly impacted by the pandemic. Along with the North Central District, Kearny Elks helped distribute virtual camping bags to the kids. They normally would have been at Elks Camp Moore over the summer, but it was all virtual in 2020. The virtual camp included arts and crafts, virtual magic shows, interactive games and more. Kearny also helped with Halloween bags through the Elks District Committee which included candy, crafts, masks, coloring books and plush toys. The bags were then delivered to campers. At Christmas, the Elks made up bags for the First Cerebral Palsy Center of New Jersey in Belleville. Some 75 students received bags with Christmasthemed arts and crafts, games, coloring books, crayons, candy canes and a Christmas plush. Members participated in St Baldrick’s Day to raise money by shaving their heads to bring awareness to beat childhood cancer. A clothing drive actually raised money for the Special Children’s Committee. “This helps to send children to Elks Camp Moore and if any need special equipment we can purchase,” Brown says. The Kearny Elks also successfully ran monthly Sunday breakfasts — socially distanced — and had a moms eat free for Mother’s Day with a ceremony. The Kearny Elks also support and participate actively in Grand Lodge programs such as the annual Hoop Shoot, Batters Up, the Walk Out on Drugs as well as Peer Leadership, Sports & Youth Tournament, Americanism Essay Contest and they sponsored a Troop 38 Eagle Scout who applied for and won a $10K scholarship through the Elks’ Special Children’s Committee. Last summer, the backyard at the lodge was cleaned and tents and lights put up — so the lounge was moved outside to better socially distance.

W.H.A.T. hosting summer arts day camp for kids

he West Hudson Arts and Theatre Company presents a summer program for young people — aged 5 to 13 — at Franklin School, Kearny, beginning later this month. The program runs June 29 to July 22 Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at the auditorium near the Ivy Street entrance to Franklin. Courses include: For ages 5 to 7, musical theater from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; dance from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; and art from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For ages 8 to 10, dance at the same time as above; art from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and music ensemble from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For ages 11 to 13, it’s art from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., dance from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; and a two hour class through 12:30 p.m., culminating with a performance of “Aladdin.” All classes are $65 each, except for the two-hour acting class, which is $110. KPD: Man tried passing fake $20 at QuickChek

n June 14 at 8:57 a.m., Officer Anthony Nunez was dispatched to Quick Chek on a report a man passed a counterfeit bill. There, a store employee told Officer Nunez two men, who were captured on store surveillance video, came into the store and ordered sandwiches. While making the sandwiches, the employee observed one of the men, later identified by Officer Nunez as Juan E. Ramirez Jr., 25, of Kearny, move to the back of the store. She became suspicious from his movements that Ramirez was concealing merchandise in his backpack. The employee confronted Ramirez, who denied shoplifting any goods and paid for his sandwich

with a $20 bill. The employee immediately felt that the cash was not authentic. She advised Ramirez she would be calling the police and reviewing store surveillance recordings. Hearing this, Ramirez and his unidentified male acquaintance walked out of the store. Officer Nunez confirmed the bill was a counterfeit $20 note. He also identified Ramirez as the man who allegedly passed it. Officer Nunez filed a summons-complaint for counterfeiting in Ramirez’s name and served it by mail. He also coordinated with a contact at the U.S. Secret Service for a follow-up investigation. On June 14 at 6:59 a.m., Officer Sean Wilson responded to the Pulaski Skyway to assist a motorist in a disabled Buick Encore. The officer found Syrina E.

Bridgeforth, 36, of Jersey City, broken down in the right lane. The driver advised the officer she ran out of gas. Officer Wilson found Bridgeforth had been driving with a suspended license and the stalled SUV has been unregistered for a year. See KPD, Page 8

Harrison’s Elks honor Old Glory

ast week, Harrison Councilman Larry Bennett took The Observer on a tour of the town’s soon-to-be-renovated Recreation Center. While there is still work to be done, once it is complete, it will become the area’s most coveted place for recreation. But it won’t just be for young people. The place is designed for adults, too, who might need a place to work out. There will be plenty of new equipment for anyone 18 and older. Recreation Chairman Larry Kelly has always done a tremendous job with his programs. That will continue once the center reopens. Well more than a year after the place became a COVID-19 testing center, it will soon, again, be a place where the young and old may gather. And the town’s soccer, basketball and other programs will be back in full swing. We take this time to commend Mayor James A. Fife, Bennett, Kelly and the town council for investing in this center — and making it a true destination. And, as usual, the greatest beneficiaries here are the taxpayers and residents of Harrison, who rarely, if ever, can legitimately complain their tax dollars aren’t wisely spent.

Clarifying a fallacy from 2021 primary

here is a complete misunderstanding out there in the land of social media of late and it is that it wasn’t until this recent primary that Kearny residents discussed or began to care about “the issues.” Having followed the comings of goings of this town for ages, we’re pretty sure there has always been a discourse and discussion of the issues. And not just on social media, either. The only difference of late, however, is that there were a few newcomers — and people who disappeared for a while, only to resurface — added to the fray. So while there are some who might say this is all new and because of the primary, we’re confident the primary was responsible for heightening the discussions — definitely not creating them for the first time in nearly two decades. Then again, on social media, when does the truth seem to matter anyway?

Essex concerts are back, kick off June 30 By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com In a real sign things are getting back to normal, the Essex County summer concert series is back. County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. says the series brings a diverse group of musicians and entertainers to perform at locations throughout the Essex County Park System and provides residents with an evening leisure activity to enjoy the parks. This year’s series features three concert and fireworks spectaculars, five concerts in Brookdale Park, 12 concerts throughout the county and two cultural festivals. “The Essex County Free Summer Music Concert Series offers a diverse lineup of performers who will take center stage throughout our historic parks system. Pack a blanket, enjoy the cool evening breeze and dance to the sounds of classical, rock and roll, jazz, big band, Latin and more. We have an amazing line-up that is sure to entertain and impress,” DiVincenzo said. The 2021 SummerMusic Concert Series — spread over 11 weeks — begins Wednesday, June 30, with a concert by Smooth and a fireworks display in Weequahic Park in Newark and concludes Saturday, Sept. 11, with the House Music Festival and a Splash of Caribbean in Weequahic Park in Newark.

Braker, 54, of Jersey City, who owns the Buick, was mailed a ticket for allowing an unlicensed operator to drive her vehicle. Bridgeforth was later released on her own recognizance. On June 17 at 9:19 p.m., Officer Bryan San Martin was dispatched to ShopRite to investigate a minor car crash that occurred when a vehicle was backing out of a parking space. While verifying the credentials of driver Rebeka Reyes, 30, of Harrison, Officer San Martin learned Reyes’ driving privileges were suspended. Reyes was arrested and summonsed for driving with a suspended license. She was later released.

Tom Pontrella responded to the U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail Processing Facility at 1200 Harrison Ave. on a report of an assault. There, it was reported to officers that Karima J. Muhammad, 31, of Newark, had engaged in an argument with a 26-year-old co-worker from East Orange, over the sharing of an office printer/scanner. The women reportedly came noseto-nose before Muhammad allegedly dug her fingernails into her colleague’s arm and then bashed her upside the head with the scanning device. Muhammad’s co-worker suffered bleeding from inside her ear, tinnitus and pain, which required her to seek treatment at Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville. After further investigation, Officer San Martin arrested Muhammad and charged her by summons with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose before being released.

Local athletes go to the head of the class

Six seniors receive NJSIAA honors for brilliance in sports and the classroom By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com About 10 years ago or so. the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association decided it would be an excellent concept to reward the top scholar/athletes among the NJSIAA’s member schools. So the NJSIAA instituted an awards program that would recognize the top scholar/athletes in the state. In the pre-COVID era, there was a luncheon that brought everyone together for a celebration of excellence. It was perhaps the finest event that the association could put out every year. However, for the past two years, the coronavirus put a kibosh on the awards presentation. The prized student/ athletes received their certificates of academic and athletic greatness, but there was no awards dinner to go along with the academic and athletic greatness. The students’ parents got to witness the presentations firsthand, but there was no dinner to go along with the preinsentations. Hey, this way, there’s something to talk about in the days, months and years that follow. The six local students who earned the distinction of being their respective school’s top student/athlete received a nice certificate – and the opportunity to be interviewed one last time by a veteran reporter who has always expressed his immense pride to tell neighbors, friends and colleagues that I do indeed reside with greatness. So here goes: The six top local student/athletes who reside in The Observer’s circulation area and will head

SWOLLEN EYELIDS

There are many issues that can end up with swollen eyelids, which are the result of inflammation or excess fluid in the eye’s connective tissue. Injuries, other trauma, and infection are among the most common causes, with allergies often cited as the most frequent trigger. However, swollen eyelids may also be a sign of more serious problems such as orbital cellulitis (an infection of the soft tissue), which can be life-threatening. In addition, Graves’ disease or ocular herpes can cause the eyelids to swell, especially when the swelling is accompanied by eye pain. If swelling occurs with excessive discharge, conjunctivitis may be the culprit, which is very contagious and should be treated immediately.

For conjunctivitis caused by bacteria, the treatment will usually be antibiotic eye drops or ointment. This generally clears the symptoms within a few days. Hate to serve as a reminder, but Venezia’s ERA this season (4.80) was higher than his GPA of 3.9. Just saying. But Venezia’s next-to-last start in high school will be the one he will forever remember. On May 27 against archrival and nemesis Secaucus, Venezia fired a four-hitter, striking out nine, and had 4-for-4 at the plate, including a home run and two RBI, in a 7-2 victory. That’s one to keep in the record books, along with being the Lyndhurst top student/athlete for 2021. All in all, it was a great representation of academics and athletics by these six outstanding student/athletes, six solid reasons for the area to be very proud once again.

Steven Pekerosky died Monday, June 14, 2021, at Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville. He was 96 A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Cecilia Church, Kearny. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Born and raised in Edwardsville, Pennsylvania, Steve lived in Kearny for the last 72 years. Mr. Pekerosky served in the United States Army during World War II.

Steve worked as a dispatcher for Motor Freight Express in Jersey City and later Elizabeth, for 20 years before retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Wilson-Gugelman Post 1302, V.F.W. in Kearny. He is survived by his son, Joseph Pekerosky, one brother, Paul Pekeroski, one sister, Helen Sambo, three grandchildren, Veronica Valli, Laura Dibiasi and Frank Pekerosky and six great-grandchildren, Wilson, Jackson, Ryan, Christopher, Nicholas and Madsion. Keep in mind, the center has been closed to all recreation activities since March 2020, and had been serving as the Harrison COVID-19 testing center for months. “We were completely shut down and were known as the Harrison COVID site,” Kelly says. “It’s been 25 years since we opened up here and nothing new has been done. We’ve got new paint — it’s much brighter. We’re going to regular floors (from indoor-outdoor carpeting) and it’s going to be a much brighter more modern place.” In addition to all that’s being doing on the inside — we’ll get to all of that shortly — the roof is also being replaced. “Every since they placed the solar panels here, there have been certain leaks,” Kelly says. “We had the guy here and they knew exactly where the leaks are. The stuff underneath wasn’t done right but they’ll get it right now.” Kelly says once the upgrades are complete, he’s most excited about getting back to a sense of the way things were before COVID struck.

THE ACTUAL WORK

The entire rec center got a new, fresh and brightercolored coat of paint. “We’re excited just to run the programs,” Kelly says. “We’ve gotten thousands of phone calls from people wondering when rec is reopening, when is basketball going to start, when is soccer going to start? Right now we have nothing for the kids. So this is really going to fix that. From traveling soccer to baseball to basketball. It’s been rough not being able to offer the programs.” When things do reopen, there’s a hope the football program will rebound — it’s been lacking of late, the two say. “That’s what they’re going to do — go into the schools and try to get kids to come out for football,” Bennett

says. “Some of the parents are a little reluctant because of the concussion situation. And a lot of kids here just want to play soccer. And a lot of the towns around here are facing the same thing because everyone wants to play soccer.” Some towns have actually merged their football programs so it’s easier to field teams. And that has helped those locations. But the football situation is made even more difficult in that Kearny is in an altogether different league, so as of now, it’s not possible, say, for Kelly to call up his Kearny counterpart Recreation Director Ralph Cattafi and say, ‘Hey, ‘let’s merge our programs.’” Bennett says he also hopes cheer-
