nce one faces east, along Schuyler Avenue at the entrance, it’s obvious instantly how much the Gunnel Oval has changed. At the front gate rests a curved red sign with the name of the recreation facility to greet you. And you just can’t help but notice the massive amounts of green from the synthetic field turf at all corners of the place. It’s all the culmination of an enormous project to take what was becom-

ing an outdated, dilapidated bunch of fields and turning it into a state-of-theart, multi-purpose outdoor rec center that could be used by youngsters and adults alike – for active and passive recreation. On Monday, April 5, Kearny Mayor Alberto G. Santos and Neglia Engineer David Silva took The Observer on a tour of the new Oval. To say the place is impressive is an understatement. See OVAL, Page 5

udson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez says she’s investigating the disappearance of cash – the proceeds of several cases – that has gone missing from her office. Suarez says she has ordered an immediate internalaffairs investigation into various denominations of cash recovered from several, separate cases have gone missing, all of which was recovered from scenes and

was being temporarily held for safekeeping. The money, the amount of which was not revealed, was kept in temporary storage in locked safes at the prosecutor’s office with limited access by investigative staff. The Prosecutor’s Office Public Integrity Unit, Internal Affairs Section, will conduct the investigation. Couple found stabbed to death in North Arlington: BCPO By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com A 33-year-old North Arlington man and his 31-year-old wife were found stabbed to death April 7 by the NA Police Department last week and as of presstime, authorities say the man stabbed his wife to death, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said late last week. An ongoing investigation into the two deceased couple found at 21 Garden Terrace, Apartment E, North Arlington, is being conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the North Arlington Police Department. According to Musella: On Wednesday, April 7, 2021, at approximately 5:41 p.m., the NAPD got a 911 call from a concerned neighbor reporting she looked through a mail slot in the front door of 21 Garden Terrace, Apartment E, and observed two people lying on the floor in the living room area. Officers from the NAPD quickly responded to the residence and forced entry into the apartment, where they found 33-year-old Balaji Rudrawar, and his wife, 31-year-old Aarti B. Rudrawar, dead. Both individuals had suffered multiple stab wounds. A young child was also located in the apartment but had not been harmed.

An investigation revealed that Aarti B. Rudrawar died as a result of multiple stab wounds inflicted by her husband, Balaji Rudrawar. Balaji Rudrawar also died as a result of multiple stab wounds, but his manner of death is undetermined, pending the completion of an autopsy and investigation. At this time, no other individuals are believed to be involved. The news made international headlines, including in India, where both Rudrawars were born. The Hindustan Times, an English-language, New Dehli, India-based news website, was able to make contact with Balaji Rudrawar’s father, who lives in India. “The bodies were found on Wednesday after neighbours saw my granddaughter crying in the balcony and informed the local police who then entered the house,” Bharat Rudrawar told the media in India. “Investigators were waiting for the medical examiner to determine the cause and circumstances of the death, but confirmed both victims had been stabbed. “The local police there informed me of the tragedy on Thursday. There is no clarity yet on the cause of the death. The US police said they will share findings of the autopsy report. My daughter-in-law

was seven months pregnant. We had been to their house and were planning another trip to the US to be with them again. “I am not aware of any possible motive. They were a happy family and had lovely neighbours. I was informed by the US authorities that it will take at least 8 to 10 days for the bodies to reach India after necessary formalities. “My granddaughter is now with a friend of my son. He had several friends in the local Indian community.” The same report that quoted Balaji’s father also noted the couple reportedly married in 2014 while in India and then moved to America in 2015. They had lived in a village in India about 300 miles from Mumbai.

Getting caught up with the Applause Radio Show By JoAnn Barton Special to The Observer Happy spring from Applause Radio Show. A lot has happened since spring sprung at ARS and if you have not been watching our calendar, here is a quick catch up. We have had many guests on who may intrigue you, but I will just steer you toward the ones I believe may pique your interest even more. Musician Dave Zane joined us March 15. Zane is a vocalist and guitarist and has performed with many of our favorite bands from the 60s and 70s. He has toured with the Grass Roots, but he is actively touring with The Buckinghams. In his 30+ years of performing, he only just recently released his own music. We played his new song, “Love Won’t Fade Away.” I could not believe this was his first original release after all of these years performing with so many other acts. It is a great song and since I have known Dave for a while now, it made me enjoy it even more. •••

Comedian/Actress Melanie Chartoff came by ARS March 19. Chartoff has been in many television shows, appeared on Broadway and is a voiceover artist/actor for The Rug Rats. My most memorable roles of Chertoff’s are from the comedy sketch show “Fridays.” If you don’t remember it, it was the savior to when Saturday Night Live started to take a nosedive and it pushed more boundaries than SNL. The show itself spawned many players who would go on to even larger fame, including Michael Richards from “Seinfeld” and Larry David, creator of “Seinfeld” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” As we discussed her career, we also discussed her new book, “Odd Woman Out: Exposure in Essays and Stories.” The book is about her feelings of life and not fitting in. Go backstage on Broadway, behind the scenes on network television and inside the complicated psyche of a talented performer struggling to play the role of a complete human. “Odd Woman Out” exposes the nature of identity in the life of a performing artist, snapshotting the

hopeful search for a self Chartoff could love, and someone else’s self to love, too. She also teaches acting classes and helps introverts find their true selves, also helping some with Asperger’s Disease. As a fan, it was a treat getting to know her. ••• Ilyssa Panitz, a divorce expert, joined us on March 24. Her expertise came from her own experiences of becoming a divorcee and she has learned so much during the process. Since it wasn’t a particularly easy task, she thought there may be others out there who would need help. Her intense research led her to write a column called “5 Things You Need to Know How to Survive and Thrive During & After a Divorce.” If you are considering a divorce, going through a divorce or have even been divorced, Panitz would be able to help you in every sense of the word. During her career, she’s worked at CNN, MSNBC, 1010 WINS, WCBSAM, New York-1 News, Westwood One, Star magazine, Closer magazine and Meredith Publishing. Extremely knowledgeable, you can

find out more about her and read her articles online. ••• One of my favorite movies, “West Side Story,” brought me to welcoming triple threat and Oscar winner George Chakiris. Chakiris played Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks in WSS, and had other roles in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and “White Christmas.” Extremely talented and still very handsome, Chakiris talked about his new book, “My West Side Story: a Memoir.” His shares his life story and how playing the role of Bernardo changed his life. He also makes beautiful jewelry celebrities love. ••• I always enjoy all our guests, but I particularly enjoy the musical artists when they come on. Jim Peterik from “The Ides of March” joined me April 1. Peterik has written over 15,000 songs. OVAL Continued from Page 1 As we first began to walk around, perhaps most noticeable was how wide all of the concourses between the fields and other portions of the place were. This was done intentionally, according to Santos. “We wanted everything to be ADA compliant,” the mayor says. “There’s plenty of room for passing from one point to another.” The walkways lead to a completely ADA-compliant set of outdoor exercise equipment, stairs for stepping, and tension-built bars for working on arms and legs. One side of each is designed for anyone to simply sit down and get to work – but the other side has a spot where someone in a wheelchair may simply drive up and get to work without having to transfer to the bench. We then stopped at the area near what will be a snack bar. The triangular building will also host a Wall of Honor, where plaques will mark the names of all the people for whom the fields are named. Then, we headed to the new playground. Here, we found swings, sliding ponds, climbing bars and wheels on which to spin the kids around. It is all accompanied by a foam-like flooring which will lead to much greater safety when the children fall or have any other kind of accident. Think of all those cuts and bruises from dirt and pebbles on older-style playgrounds. This will be no more because the entire playground area is extremely safe and modern. And the area is huge – leaving room for a lot of children to play at one time. The entire playground has benches along the perimeter, too, so as the kids play, mom and dad may take a quick breather when needed. Just outside the playground – and, of course, near the snack bar, are several outdoor picnic tables where you’ll be able to bring your food to consume. You’ll even be able to bring your own provisions, especially when the snack bar is closed. Nearby are plenty of trash bins, just like the ones you’ve seen around town – the ones that are solar-operated and that don’t require touching to open (they’re equipped with foot pedals.) After eating, there are restrooms that are all fully touchless. (Sensors will turn on sinks and flush toilets.) Now, as we continued to walk around the Oval, Santos pointed to some of the security cameras. They’re all strategically placed – and may be remotely monitored. “All of the cameras feed directly to Kearny Police Department Headquarters,” Santos says. “We hope they serve as a deterrent to anyone who might consider vandalism or graffiti. The Oval will be a very secure location.” Then there’s the new, massive light towers. Every single one of them are energy-efficient and remarkably, may be controlled remotely with a mobile-phone app. This means when the lights must go on, Recreation Director Ralph Cattafi can simply turn them on from his phone from anywhere in the world. And, unlike the old lighting, they boot up substantially faster, according to Silva.

Boyd: Federal oversight of elections? No, thank you

Refurbished Oval is something to behold

f you haven’t been inside it yet, you’re in for treat. Kearny’s Gunnel Oval, under renovation for quite some time, is open — and the project is truly a magnificent feat of engineering and forwardthinking. The moment one arrives, it’s clear Kearny is now home to one of the best recreation facilities in Hudson County and perhaps even in all of North Jersey. Whether it’s fields for soccer or baseball, a regulation-size volleyball court, outdoor, handicap-accessible workout equipment, the enormous playground for children, the touchless restrooms, the snack bar, the skateboarding park, the energyefficient new lighting, the picnic tables and more, the entire project represents years of hard work, incredible vision and a place where future generations will be able to play — and where the likelihood of flooding (think back to 2012 and Super Storm Sandy and what that did to the place) will be nothing but a memory of how things used to be. And best of all, grants funded nearly everything. So as the Town of Kearny reopens the Oval, we tip our caps to everyone who played an integral role in seeing this project through. Well done, one and all, for making it all happen, from start to finish.

To the Editor: America’s Founding Fathers divided their times between Congressional sessions and their farms and businesses, at times putting their lives and livelihoods at stake. One thing is certain – they did not anticipate that future legislators would spend lifetimes securely cocooned from their constituents. Congressional rolls list multiterm members as the norm. Decades of political entrenchment have given these elected officials perspectives, including ideology and safeaggrandizement, that lack input from average citizens.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR A current bill – HR1 – which aims to federalize election procedures smacks of this lack of input. Replete with terms such as “voting rights,” “voter suppression” and “racism,” this bill virtually eliminates voter ID and suggests same-day registration and voting. It installs mail-in ballots without signatures or any proof of voter eligibility as the law of the land. Within the folds of the bill is federal redistricting, giving a nod to

gerrymandering. It virtually eliminates states’ rights and prerogatives. Multi-term members of Congress are forcing the issue. Ben Franklin’s adage, “Fish and visitors smell in three days” should apply to term limits. If legislators were forced to return to their districts as mere citizens, after a limited amount of terms, and if they experienced, first-hand, the fallout of their legislation like HR1, they might be more amenable to answering their constituents’ concerns and less likely to obstruct individual rights. Santos says there’s been greater demand for a place to play volleyball in town and until now, the only place where it was possible was on a dirt-and-grass section in West Hudson Park. For now, like the new basketball court, these locations will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. It will remain that way unless demand grows or if there’s ever a formation of a volleyball league. (There isn’t one right now.) Meanwhile, the same skate park from the original Oval remains and didn’t need upgrades. It’s that new.

FLOODS HOPEFULLY NO MORE

One only needs to remember 2012 when Super Storm Sandy hit the area. The Oval was substantially damaged by flooding. But it hardly took a super storm to flood the place – even nor’easters or strong thunderstorms would put parts of the Oval under water. No more, though, hopefully. Two massive pumping stations are now a part of the Oval, and if rainwaters develop, Silva says it won’t take long for the pumps to engage and get the water out. “It should take no more than nine minutes,” he says. You might even notice this if you look toward the rear of the homes on East Midland Avenue, which are visible to the park’s north. This was all done to assist with the flooding and to help keep the marsh waters out when tides are high. “We’re very happy with the project,” Santos says. The same may be said of Silva, who says while he has enjoyed the project, he’s “glad it’s all coming to a close.” And now, because of the fruits of the labors of all involved, the town has what may only be described as the most enviable rec facility in the area, if not all of the state. Editor’s note: The town says the Gunnel Oval is now officially open to the public, 7 days a week, from 9 a.m. to dusk. It might be open later on gamedays, but no later than 10 p.m.

Belleville wrestlers bounce back strong The Belleville High School wrestling team started off the truncated and abbreviated season with a dismal five straight losses. That might drive most teams to the brink of despair, especially in a shortened season. But the Buccaneers have rebounded nicely from their rugged start and have won their last four matches in a row, including convincing wins over Union City and Newark East Side in consecutive days last week on Friday and Saturday. Also through the dual meets, the Belleville girls’ grappling gang, spearheaded by sisters Alisa and Soraya Safforld, advanced all the way to the finals of their respective region tournaments on Saturday in Union High School. Alisa Safforld, a senior, advanced to the title bout in the 107-pound weight class, while younger sister Soraya, the sixth seed in the 114-pound bracket, also advanced to the finals. Both sisters will take silver medals to the state championships that were held over the weekend at Phillipsburg High School. Alisa Safforld took home second in the entire state at the state championships, which is quite an accom-

plishment. “Alisa is our most decorated wrestler,” said Belleville head coach Joe Pizzi. “She was fourth in the state last year and third in the state in 2020. She hopes to top her previous accolades in this year’s state tournament.” And that she did with the second place finish,. Soraya Safforld, a junior, has shown Pizzi a lot. “She’s really grown this year and proved that by placing third in the recent Bergen County Girls’ Tournament,” Pizzi said. “She has been wrestling flawless and looks as though she’s on a mission.” Ilana Williams is a 100-pound freshman and the third sister of the Safforld-Williams clan. “Ilana is new to the sport, but she is very strong willed and very resilient,” Pizzi said. “We are looking forward to her future with us here.” A look at the Buccaneers’ lineup is as follows: Freshman Jakob Ferrer is a 106-pounder. “Jakob is a tough and extremely aggressive wrestler who also excels in the classroom,” Pizzi said. “We are very excited about this young man and his work See VIEW, Page 10

Kardinals look to Serrano to lead the way By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com For all intents and purposes, the 2020 high school baseball season was supposed to be the breakout campaign for the Kardinals of Kearny High School. Everything was in place – good pitching, timely hitting, perfect defense. It was going to be the year of the Kardinal, that after a few years of struggling, Kearny was poised to make a comeback. Then, the unthinkable took place. The coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic swallowed the world and eliminated all high school athletics for the spring 2020 season. “It was very heartbreaking,” said Kearny head baseball coach Dave Smart. “We had a solid guy at every position. It was especially heartbreaking for the seniors, who didn’t get the chance to play their senior year of high school.” Now, a year later, and the talk, the thought of a Kearny contender have dissipated. “We have a very young team,” Smart said. “It’s back to basics. We have a very hard working young team with a lot of sophomores. In some respect, they’re almost freshmen, because they didn’t play last year. It’s just tough all around any way you look at it. But these kids are hard working and they’re hungry.” One of the hungriest of the Kardinals is senior ace pitcher/shortstop Chris Serrano, who was a starter during his freshman and sophomore seasons and brings that experience and enthusiasm to the Kearny diamonds this spring, before he heads off to play at Rowan University in the fall. “Chris is everything,” Smart said. “He’s the backbone of this team. The kids all look up to him. He’s almost like having a player/coach. He

grabs the younger players and works with them. He will stop what he’s doing every day to work with a couple of kids, rolling grounders with them. He’s really like the fourth coach on the staff. He knows what to expect from us and what I expect from him. He looks around and sees what we have and offers advice. His experience is everything to us.” Another key returnee is senior first baseman/pitcher Jack Cullen, who has undergone a lot over his career, including the untimely passing of his father last year. Cullen will be the mainstay at first base and will be an excellent complement to Serrano and the Kardinal pitching staff. “Jack is a big presence on the hill,” Smart said. “He throws hard and gets people out.” The other key senior is catcher Connor MacConchie, who was also a starter two years ago and returns for his final season. “Although Connor is very athletic and solid at other positions, I think he’s one of the better catchers we’ve ever produced,” Smart said. “He has a strong arm and fields his position extremely well.”

The Kardinals have another talented catcher who will have to wait his turn. Freshman Victor Hanson is waiting in the wings, but with MacConchie behind the dish, Hanson will observe and learn. “Connor has taken Victor under his wing,” Smart said. “The two are working well together.” Another talented hurler is junior right-hander Ryan Gil. The tall, lanky Gil, who made his mark during the basketball season, is developing into a fine pitcher and shortstop when Serrano is pitching. “Ryan is really getting used to his body,” Smart said. “He has the size and the makeup to be a good pitcher. We’re working on his mechanics, but he’s going to be on the hill a lot for us this year.” Another pitcher is freshman left-hander William McChesney¸ who has a lot of potential. “We’re going to have to throw him in there and see how he does right away,” Smart said. “He’s going to get his shot.” The first base duties are currently being shared by Cullen and McChesney. Wednesday, April 14, 2021 “Matias is in only his second season on the mat and he has shown us how important work ethic is as a wrestler,” Pizzi said. “He has lost about 40 pounds over the last year and has become an extremely versatile young man.” Fernando Collado is a 152-pound sophomore. “Fernando has come a long way from his freshman year,” Pizzi said. “He is a tough wrestler who leaves it all on the mat. He wrestles with controlled aggression and has become an important piece in our lineup.” Junior Diego Viera is the team’s answer at 160 pounds. “Diego came to us with no experience at all,” Pizzi said. “He has shown major growth over the last two years. He’s a quiet young man who leads by example both on and off the mat.” Junior Christian Vitale, who also plays football and baseball for the Buccaneers, got some varsity time at 160 pounds. “Christian is a raw competitor,” Pizzi said. “He’s an extremely athletic kid and we’re happy to have him contributing in a variety of ways.” Junior Ethan Lopez answers the call at 170. The team’s inspiration is 220-pound sophomore Angelo Dorainvil. “Angelo was originally a football player who came to us with an open mind and a big heart,” Pizzi said. “He has really taken to the sport of wrestling and is excelling as a 2nd year wrestler. We have high hopes for Angelo and it is truly a joy to coach him. He is always asking questions and looking to make improvements racking his brain to perfect his craft.” Matt Amante is one of the team’s lone seniors. He’s also the team’s heavyweight. “Matt is a quiet leader and does all the right things,” Pizzi said. “He is a true teammate and will do anything for his brothers and sisters on and off the mat. He excels in the classroom and well and has done a tremendous job for both football and wrestling in his years with us.” Needless to say, it’s been a dramatic turnaround for Pizzi and the Bucs as the season winds down.

Veteran Vikings poised to make a difference in ‘21 By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com The great author Oscar Wilde once wrote, “You can’t put a price tag on experience.” North Arlington High School head baseball coach Paul Marcantuono knows what Wilde was talking about better than anyone. That’s because Marcantuono welcomes back seven seniors this season, even after the entire program was shut down a year ago – like everyone else who participated in spring sports – due to the

COVID-19 pandemic. There aren’t many local teams that can boast with such a veteran roster, even with North Arlington being a small Group I school in terms of enrollment. “We have a bunch of kids who played a lot as freshmen and sophomores,” Marcantuono said. “With the kids having varsity experience, it made the early practices easier. We also have some kids that are new, but the veteran kids are leading the younger ones well. They came ready to work from the first day. They’re all excited

to be back.” Marcantuono likes the attitude of his veteran group. “They’re all smiling and happy to be out there,” Marcantuono said. “It got taken away from them last year. Most of these kids have been together since grade school. They’re used to each other. Patrick Lico of Kearny died peacefully on March 31 ,2021. He was 85. Patrick is survived by his three children Frank Lico, Dawn Lico and Nicole Breedlove (Lico); son-in-law Jonathan Breedlove; stepson Bruce Kocenski; grandchildren Francki Lynn and Aidan Jonathan Breedlove and Julianna Kocenski; sister Barbara Richiusa and her husband Gordan and sister Rosemary Genovese and brother-in-law Frank Genovese. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Patrick was a revered employee of Kearny ShopRite for over 58 years and was also known in Kearny as “the poetry man” as he composed many personalized pieces of poetry for friends and loved ones over the years. It’s really amazing. I’m impressed with the passion he showed to get back on the field. It really energized me. I’ve coached Jared since he was in sixth grade, so we’ve been very close. When we started (practices), it really wasn’t the same without him here. Once he got cleared and came back, everyone stood and gave him a round of applause. I think the team was uplifted as well. I thought it was going to take a while for him to come back, but he wants to get out there and he’s looking to get back.” Velasquez was also a pitcher in 2019 as a sophomore and won three games that season. Senior Donovan Ortiz, Eddie’s older brother, is the team’s second baseman where he also played in 2019. “He’s been our starting second baseman all along,” Marcantuono said. “We’re going to ask him to play shortstop a little when Joey is pitching. He’s our No. 2 hitter. He has great bat control and is a reliable hitter.” Witt is the mainstay at shortstop and Gerace is the third baseman.

“Gerace is our No. 3 hitter and he has some power as well,” Marcantuono said. “He knows the game well.” The outfield will feature Torres, Eddie Ortiz, seniors Jimmy Pizzuta and Chris Fontes, sophomore Kyle Villani and extremely promising freshman Robert Carselda, whom Marcantuono believes is a star of the future.

who has already seen action at four different positions this spring. The Vikings are poised to make noise in the NJIC. “Why not us?” Marcantuono said. “Why can’t it be us this year?
