or teachers and school guidance counselors, the 2020-2021 academic year has been like no other. In some cases, they’ve never met their students in-person -ever. Most instruction has been remote. And, it’s hard to tell when things might even get close to looking normal again. But the combat that notion -- and with the holidays here -- one guidance counselor at the new Lyndhurst Middle School has taken unique

steps so that all of the school’s students know their teachers care for them -- and miss being able to see them face to face. Maureen Colombo, in consultation with some of her colleagues and administrators, came up with a theme, “Same Storm, Different Boat -- Coping With Middle Schoolers During a Pandemic.” “There are a lot of sayings all over right now that we are in this together. But the reality is that even though we are all in the same storm, we are not in the same boat,” Colombo said. “Some of us have experienced real hardships since March, whereas others may have enjoyed the break from activity

and the down time at home. Although we are not in the same boat, we can and will get through this storm together.” To put this concept into action, Colombo and others have spent the last few weeks going to the homes of each and every student at the school for a visit. They wear masks, of course, and keep their distance. Hudson County opening vaccine center in Kearny By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com Kearny will soon be home to Hudson County’s first COVID-19 vaccine center. Hudson County will open the vaccination site at the USS Juneau Center, Office of Emergency Management, 110 Hackensack Ave., South Kearny beginning sometime this week, Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise said last week. The vaccination center will be operated by the Hudson Regional Health Commission and will be overseen by the newly established Hudson County Vaccine Task Force, which the county executive will utilize to coordinate vaccine response across several different

county departments and autonomous agencies as well as the community at-large. At the same time, the county will continue offering COVID-19 testing through its partnership with Hudson Regional Hospital in Secaucus. “Our nation has eagerly awaited the approval of a vaccine to combat the COVID-19 crisis and Hudson County has worked diligently for the past nine months to prepare for this moment,” Hudson County Executive Thomas A. DeGise said. “While we cannot let our guard down just yet, knowing our community will receive its first shipment of vaccines in the coming days assures all of us that we are one step closer to reaching the light at the end of this dark tunnel. Those eligible include private-practice doctors and nurses, dentists, hygienists, community and public health workers, funeral directors, paid and unpaid emergency medical technicians and those working in labs with infectious material. Medical personnel who work at local hospitals will be vaccinated by their employers. “The Hudson Regional Health Commission is working closely with County Executive DeGise to ensure that the first wave of vaccinations is administered efficiently and effectively,” Carrie Nawrocki, executive director of the HRHC said. “In the coming days, our team of health experts will be working around the clock to begin operations at Hudson County’s first vaccination center and start distribution immediately after receiving our first shipment.” DeGise and the Office of Emergency Management continue to work with all available partners, as has been done since the onset of the pandemic, to ensure the vaccination site has the necessary staffing and equipment to run efficiently

and effectively. Members of the Hudson County Vaccine Task Force who are actively participating include the Hudson County Improvement Authority and County Department of Roads and Public Property which are preparing the site for use; the Hudson County Schools of Technology, which is providing technical and IT assistance; and Hudson County Sheriff Francis X. “Frank” Schillari and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, who is assisting with crowd and traffic control and others. DeGise says he is monitoring the vaccinedistribution process closely with all Hudson County mayors and local health officers and will make regular reports available to all elected officials and relevant stakeholders. The Vaccine Task Force was to have its first briefing with Hudson County mayors last week. Vaccines will be administered by appointment only and additional information about how eligible individuals may register to be vaccinated at the site will be made available in the coming days.

So how did these visits come to fruition? “The United States Coast Guard exists to protect America’s economic, national and border security,” Colombo said. “And so, Lyndhurst Middle School has developed the LMS Coast Guard to support LMS students and their academic, mental and emotional growth. The LMS Coast Guard will be coasting through Lyndhurst on any given weekday to surprise students and provide support and positivity.” So far, the reception has been very positive. er,” Colombo said. “We are all experiencing new stressors and overwhelming feelings and thoughts. While we may each be on a different boat with various resources and support, we want all students to know that no one needs to experience this pandemic alone. We are here to help.” Damian Holck, an LMS seventh-grader, and his mom, Nancy, were impressed with the visit they got. “We really liked it. It shows that people do care about others and their well-being and that there are people to talk to during these trying times so you don’t feel so alone,” Damian said. Though last week’s snowstorm slowed the overall process down a bit, Colombo says the team has already visited 100 homes and the goal is to visit all of the 600+ students as soon as possible.

You should have your children listen in to hear his reading. I can also see “Santa’s Monster Bash” being an animated Christmas special like “Rudolph” and “Frosty the Snowman” with a monster twist. Definitely a cute Christmas song. You may find Ryan’s material at all online outlets. In keeping with our Christmas theme, I threw together a last-minute broadcast to welcome singer/ actor De’Sean Dooley. Dooley is the grandson of Sonny Till from the Orioles, known for their hit “Crying in the Chapel.” Dooley released his new song “Lonely Christmas” on the date he joined me on the show, Dec. 18. A song about always enjoying being with family and friends, this year is a “Lonely Christmas.” It starts out slow but then picks up at the bridge and takes over on the chorus, a jazzy R&B ditty worth hearing. Remembering those who’ve lost their lives to COVID-19

year ago at this time, many of us were preparing for a much different Christmas season. We shopped and walked around stores, malls. We cooked. We traveled to our families’ homes, near and far. Some hopped on airplanes. We hugged each other. We sat on the same couches. We greeted each other with handshakes. We did so because it’s what we always do. And yet, a year later, here we are, with such a different way of life, a shattered way of doing things, a brand new way of doing just about everything. In this country, there are more than 300,000 people who celebrated the holidays in 2019 who will instead be represented by empty chairs at the dinner table in 2020, because their lives were cut down by this hideous virus. There are more than 300,000 families whose lives have been turned upside down and who may never be the same because of this hideous virus. There are many families, locally, whose 2020 Christmas won’t be the same, like the Hacketts, who lost Artie several months ago and the Battistas, who lost Patricia just a few weeks ago. We could continue to list names, but you get the idea, don’t you? The idea that far too many innocent and good people won’t be around this Christmas — all because of a virus whose name we barely knew at this very moment one year ago. But it’s still a reality, one we’ve all faced in one form or another. As we gather around the table this year, perhaps a smaller table either because the fear of being together or because we’ve lost someone we love to COVID-19, may we remember all who have died in this last year. It’s going to be difficult, without question. It didn’t have to be this way. But if we allow the memory of those who have died over the last 12 months to shine through, maybe, just maybe, it will serve as a reminder — though we’ve all lost so much, we still have each other. And we’ll all be stronger and better off for it in the end.

McLaughlin: More lives could’ve been saved had Trump been honest with us To the Editor: Re: Armand Rose’s letter last week. He mentioned the public’s panic reaction to severe weather predictions. What is his solution to that? Cancel weather predictions? He asked if Trump should

have added to the panic of COVID-19 by advising the public to wear masks and wash hands -- I ask: How would that have added to panic? I would think that if Trump would have come before the U.S. public, calmly explaining possibilities of not using protection, less

KPD: Nab man cycling from Newark to Kearny with crack By Capt. Tim Wagner Kearny Police Department

n Dec. 7 at 12:49 p.m., Det. Mike Andrews saw a bicyclist pedaling to Kearny from Newark. He recognized the bicyclist to be Nelson X. Toro-Maldonado, 30, of Kearny, a man whom he arrested Oct. 30 for possessing 51 decks of heroin. Det. Andrews approached Toro-Maldonado at the intersection of Belgrove Drive and Grant Avenue to try to have a word with him. Upon seeing the detective, Toro-Maldonado reportedly reached into his right pants pocket and bladed the right side of his body away from the detective. Not knowing what was in his pants pocket, Det. Andrews asked the man to remove his hand from his pocket, and then grabbed Toro-Maldonado’s arm when he refused to remove his hand from within his pocket. Upon having his arm grabbed, Toro-Maldonado allegedly pulled out his hand from his pocket and tossed a glass vial of crack cocaine to the street. Det. Andrews now tried to arrest Toro-Maldonado, but he allegedly pushed the detective a few times and tried to run. Andrews tackled the crack-toting cyclist to the ground as back-up officers arrived and helped handcuff him. Upon standing him back up, the officers found under his torso a black container, inside of which were 15 folds of heroin stamped “True Religion.” Toro-Maldonado was

charged by summons with possession of heroin, crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia; resisting arrest, aggravated assault on police and obstructing the administration of law. He was later released. On Dec. 8 at 11:22 p.m., Officer Sergio Nobre, driving near Schuyler Avenue and the Belleville Turnpike, ran a random license-plate query on his in-car computer. That check returned a “hit” indicating that the owner of the Honda traveling in front of him was wanted by the Hudson County Sheriff for a charge of terroristic threats. Officer Nobre pulled over the Honda to learn that its driver was the wanted man, Saravanan Subramani, 38, of Jersey City. Subramani was arrested without incident and turned over to the county sheriff’s office. On Dec. 10 at 2 p.m., Officer Anthony Nunez was dispatched to Town Hall to investigate a report that a wanted man was inside of the building. He arrived with Det. Jonathan Dowie and Officer Ryan Stickno to find Luciano Yuelling, 37, of Newark, who was in fact wanted. Yuelling was the subject of a bench warrant concerning an Oct. 19 shoplifting at Kearny Plaza Liquors in which he allegedly stole and immediately guzzled a bottle of Jack Daniels. During processing for his arrest, Yuelling expressed a need to now visit the hospital. He was transported under guard to Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville. When it was learned Yuelling would

POLICE BEAT be admitted for observation, the court released him from police custody on his own recognizance and scheduled a new court date to hear his case. On Dec. 11 at 9:50 p.m., Sgt. Mike Gonzalez and Officer Mat Lopez were assigned to a bicycle patrol detail to address potential pandemic-related issues in the business district. The cycling sleuths happened upon Jose R. Rosario, 51, of Newark. Rosario was sitting on a bench near 247 Kearny Ave.,

allegedly enjoying a “tall boy” can of Coors beer – not the light stuff, but the high-test banquet beer. The officers intended to write a summons to Rosario for violating the local ordinance against drinking alcohol in public. In the process, they learned Rosario was wanted by the Essex County Sheriff for a probation violation relating to a burglary charge. Rosario was handed a ticket for the town-ordinance violation and arrested for the no-bail warrant. He was sent to the Hudson County Jail, South Kearny, to await transfer to Essex County. On Dec. 13 at 2:48 a.m.,

Officer Sean Kelly responded to a car crash at Schuyler and Midland avenues. His investigation showed Toyota Camry driver Jhonny Huerta, 41, of Harrison, rear-ended the car of a 50-year-old Belleville woman. When Officer Kelly observed Huerta’s explanation for the accident was about as deficient as his motor skills, he administered field-sobriety testing, which Huerta reportedly failed. Subsequent to a later breath test, Huerta was charged with DWI, following too closely, reckless driving and failure to possess an insurance card. Huerta was later released to a family member.

Hudson County Executive Thomas A. DeGise is quarantining after a possible exposure to COVID-19. The county executive was administered a rapid COVID-19 test late last week, which was negative, and he is currently awaiting additional test results. DeGise’s Chief of Staff Craig Guy was informed he had tested positive after beginning to show minor symptoms on Dec. 11 and

undergoing PCR testing. Guy is currently isolated and is continuing to work remotely, and the rest of the county executive’s staff is also undergoing testing, quarantining and working remotely until further notice. The county executive says he is in good spirits and he and his staff are following all public health guidelines and protocols. — Canessa

Over the past week, Lyndhurst police officers took part in several community-policing initiatives, including a First Responder Holiday Parade and distributing holiday turkeys and more. With gift cards received through a card drive, officers delivered turkeys to 30+ local families who have suffered financial hardships brought on by the pandemic. Who’s been naughty and who’s been nice? Santa Hague knows Well, believe it or not, it’s that time of year. It’s time for the jingling of bells and the wishing of good cheer. It’s time for caroling and joyous celebrations. It’s time for Michael Buble to pretend like he has friends so he can have a special on television. It’s time for Ariana Grande to flash another engagement ring. Yes, it’s once again Christmas time, boys and girls. Even in a pandemic year, it’s time to judge who’s been naughty and who’s been nice. It’s time for Santa Hague to reach into his giant bag and give presents to deserving local sports figures. So without further ado, here’s the Santa Hague Gift Column for 2020. Ho, ho, hardy ho ho. We will start geographically south and work our way with the sleigh northward. In Harrison, athletic director Kim McDonough would like a football coach who stays around for longer than a cup of coffee. That school changes grid coaches more than I change my undawares. For dedicated coach Nick Landy, a great team to coach once again. No one deserves success more than my man Nick. For the first family of

West Hudson soccer, the Ruseks, how about a striker that can score 30 goals – and then stick around long enough to celebrate the goals? Losing Mustapha Sowe this year set the Blue Tide back and they never really recovered. While we’re on the subject of the Sowe family, Santa has older brother Omar receiving a call-up to the Red Bulls main squad in 2021 and scoring a few goals, becoming the first homegrown Harrisonian to play for the Red Bulls. Harrison basketball coach Jose Camano will get a handful of wins more than last year and maybe get a hard-working, sharpshooting, slick ball handler that plays a lot like Jose Camano. Harrison’s native son Dustin Huseinovic will finally get a chance to shine on the football field with a spring football season, thanks to the pandemic. But Huseinovic will make the most of the switch to spring and flourish after all that time off. Huseinovic does so well that he starts to draw interest from the pro scouts. Lyndhurst youth grid squad wins Meadowlands youth football title

By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com Phil Mazzarella has been involved in youth sports in Lyndhurst for almost 40 years, coaching an assortment of different teams during those four decades of dedication. So when Mazzarella assembled his 8-and-9-year-old football team to play in the Meadowlands Youth Football League this fall, the veteran coach just knew he had something special. “I knew we had a really good team,” Mazzarella said. “I watched these kids grow. I had most of them last year. I knew they were a tough group of kids and they really listen to what we have to say. That’s a really good thing.” The Lyndhurst youngsters were firm believers in themselves this season, even battling the obstacles of the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. “We worked really hard in practice,” said 10-year old standout running back/linebacker Avery Cano. “We kept working hard non-stop.” The diligence carried through the regular season and into the playoffs. Lyndhurst advanced to the Super Bowl of the Meadowlands Youth Football League recently against Wood-Ridge in Saddle Brook and lo and behold, Lyndhurst won the game by the final score of 20-7. It marked the third time in the last four decades that Lyndhurst captured the 8-and-9-year-old Super Bowl championship under Mazzarella’s leadership. Lyndhurst won the league title in 1989 and in 2000. In the Super Bowl, Cano got Lyndhurst going with a 33-yard touchdown run

and ended things with another touchdown jaunt. “It’s just unbelievable,” Cano said. “But I couldn’t do it without my teammates. My team was just so ready to play.” Cano said that he loves playing the two positions he plays. “I like to run with the ball and I like to score touchdowns,” Cano said. “But I also like to hit people. I don’t know what I like to do more.” Cano attends fifth grade at Lyndhurst’s Roosevelt School. He’s a big fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and his favorite player is Tyreek Hill. Cano also plays baseball and lacrosse in town and it’s hard for him to pick one over the other. “Winning the Super Bowl was such a big thing for us,” Cano said. “I’m really glad we won for Coach Phil (Mazzarella). He was so excited and I’m so happy to make him

happy.” If Mazzarella was excited, then what about Cano himself? “Oh, I was excited, too,” Cano said. “It’s just really great. I loved it. I love being with my team. We were able to make everyone happy.” Needless to say, Cano is a star on the rise. “Avery Cano is one of the better backs in the league and one of the best ones we’ve ever had,” Mazzarella said. “You could see that the other kids follow his lead.” Skyler Simmons is another key member of the team. “It was amazing that we won the Super Bowl,” said Simmons, who is a versatile jack-of-all-trades who plays anywhere on the field. “We worked real hard. Going into the game, I was a little nervous, but when we scored first, I wasn’t nervous anymore. I just kept playing. Once we See LYNDHURST, Page 10

scored two touchdowns, we were doing well.” Simmons saw time at running back and wingback on offense and cornerback on defense. “It’s a big rush for everyone when you win a championship like this one,” said Simmons, a nine-year-old fourth grader at Jefferson School. “I can’t wait until next year, when we’re going to go all the way again.” Simmons put a little pressure on himself and his teammates. “We can handle it,” said

Simmons, who keeps busy playing baseball, soccer, basketball, and golf during the offseason from football. “I can’t help it. I love hitting golf balls.” Simmons is a big fan of the Chiefs as well and his favorite player is the electrifying Patrick Mahomes. Jake Dolaghan is another versatile member of the team. He’s one of the younger members of the team, since he’s a third grader at Jefferson School. Dolaghan is a fan of the New York Jets, as he has to be elated (as much as this writer is deflated) by the Jets’ huge upset win over the Los Angeles Rams Sunday.

Dolaghan had a wide range of emotions in the Super Bowl. “It was exciting and tense all wrapped into one,” Dolaghan said. “We were definitely nervous. They came out to play. When we got to the fourth quarter, I was definitely nervous. But football is a team game and our team is like a family. We believe in each other.” Dolaghan said that he’s probably not going to stop talking about the Super Bowl win for quite some time. “I don’t think we will ever stop talking about it,” said Dolaghan, whose favorite player is Mahomes, but

They were a lot bigger than us, but nothing was going to stop us.” Young Dolaghan is another busy youngster with no time off, competing in basketball, baseball, soccer and wrestling. “But I don’t play soccer and wrestling anymore,” Jake said. “I concentrate on the others.” And Jake Dolaghan is already making plans for next season. “We’re going to have a good team coming back,” Dolaghan said. “I think we can go back-to-back.” That’s news to Mazzarella. “We didn’t do it for 20 years and now we’re expected to do it again next year?” Mazzarella said. “We really have good kids who can run, can catch and throw. Avery is a great runner. Skyler has good hands. We have really good kids. We just teach them what they need to know to play football. Added Mazzarella,

“What’s really great now is that we have generations of kids who played for us and now bring their kids to us. I see generations of kids that I coached win Super Bowls.” The town honored the Super Bowl champions by putting a banner across Ridge Road, proclaiming the Super Bowl champs. There already was a parade. And as you know, everyone loves a parade. “It makes you feel good as a coach, when you see kids crying that they won,” Mazzarella said. “Some will move up the ladder and move on. I’m just glad we had them. The kids are crying because they’ll miss us, but I’ll miss them too.” The kids were taught to act like champions, not just win like champs. And that’s the best news of all. Congrats to Lyndhurst, the 8-and-9-year-old Super Bowl champs. Has a nice ring to it. Did anyone mention rings? No, there aren’t rings, but each member of the team will receive a jacket to wear around town. That’s something to brag about, right?

She is also survived by her beloved sister Pat and her husband, Joe Ruccatano, her nephews Anthony and his wife Laurie Ruccatano, Gary and his wife Stephanie and her late beloved niece, Christina Ruccatano; her great-nephews Anthony and his wife Iacobella, Alex, Billy, Haskel, Nicky and his wife Tiffany, and the late Joey Ruccatano; her great-niece Alissa and her husband Les Czapelski; her dear cousins, Petey Gassert and his wife Susan who helped to comfort Nancy so much in her final days and of which, will never be forgotten; Rocky Ruccatano, a great friend, neighbor, who was always there to help Nancy when needed. And last but not least, Nancy’s beautiful, great-grand-niece, Ryleigh Ruccatano. Nancy earned a master’s degree from Rutgers University in Newark. She was a retired executive secretary for the Henkel Corporation in Morristown, and for Raythenon Technologies in N.Y.C. Nancy was an active member of the YMCA in Montclair, where she enjoyed swimming, dancing and yoga classes. In her spare time, she loved to read and listen to music. It was a busy weekend in Harrison. At left, Councilman Larry Bennett led the town’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony Sunday night. Police officers, firefighters, other town workers and elected officials were on hand for the ceremony. At right, DPW workers worked long hours over the weekend clearing every street, curb to curb, of the recent snow. Wreaths Across America Day was observed Saturday, Dec. 19, at St. Peter’s Church Cemetery in Belleville. Wreaths Across America coordinates the laying of hundreds of thousands of wreaths at the graves of veterans throughout the United States. This is the fourth year the Belleville Historical Society’s Veterans Christmas Wreath Project served as the local coordinator. Wreaths will be set on veterans graves throughout Belleville and at six other area cemeteries where Belleville soldiers killed in action are interred.

December People perform raising money and awareness for charity and are not happy they cannot tour this year to help those in need because this year, the help is needed more than ever. Dec. 20 brought us the author Kristen Casey who wrote “Rock Monster: My Life With Joe Walsh.” Casey was with Walsh for seven years and the book takes you to the wild party of touring with a major act, The Eagles, as the two entwined. The duo almost married several times, but it would not come to be as addiction played a major role in their lives. Once one got clean, the other seemed to slowly fade away from the other as they both struggled to survive. It is a great story and. We had a fabulous conversation and I am so proud of the both of them for kicking their habits and changing their lives for the better. Casey was kind enough to give away an autographed copy of her book and the lucky recipient in California will enjoy it indeed.
