SANTA’S NEW WAY Even Jolly Old St. Nick has had to adjust to a COVID-19 pandemic world

Each and every year for the last dozen, Kearny’s Jack Satter always looks forward to the Christmas season. It’s no longer for his sons -- they’re both grown and police officers in the Kansas City, Missouri, area. But it’s for a very distinct reason. As he got less young, he came to a startling realization that if he grew out a beard and got it bleached, he strikingly resembled the man from the North Pole. And, as the photo to the left, which was taken a year ago in The Observer’s office, in much better times, will demonstrate, it’s almost uncanny how perfect Satter is when he fills in for the real Santa whilst he’s up north, preparing to bring toys and all the trimmings to all the good girls and boys in the world.

Interestingly enough, the last time I saw Satter in person was around the beginning of March when he stopped by The Observer office to pick up a copy of that week’s newspaper. The very next week, our office was closed to the public after it became clear how dangerous a world we were living in. So in planning stories for what could only be described as a non-traditional Christmas season in 2020 -- thanks, again, for that, COVID-19 -- we got to wondering: How does a worldwide pandemic change things for a man who fills in for Santa and who, notably, doesn’t take a penny for his services? We figured his work would be limited. See SANTA, Page 19

BCPO: Kearny woman charged in wrong-way car crash A Kearny woman has been arrested and charged with two counts of assault by auto, plus she was issued tickets charging her with drunken-driving, operating the wrong way on a one-way road and reckless driving, in connection with a serious crash that took place on Rt. 3 late last month, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said. The arrest of Nube Guzman Picon, 18, of Hoyt Street, was the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the East Rutherford Police Department. According to Musella, at approximately 1:31 a.m., Nov. 28, the East Rutherford Police Department responded to a motorvehicle crash on Rt. 3 East in the area of the Berry’s Creek Bridge in which a 2015 Nissan Altima, traveling west in the eastbound lanes, reportedly struck a 2005 Nissan Altima head-on. The driver of the wrongway vehicle, Guzman Picon, her 18-yearold female passenger and the 43-year-old male driver of the other vehicle were all transported to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. The victims suffered serious injuries and remain

HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS SANTA VISITING KEARNY DEC. 12 STARTING AT 9 A.M. Well, because of the weather, Santa had to delay his trip to Kearny. Santa will now travel around Kearny on Saturday, Dec. 12, beginning at 9 a.m. He’ll be on the bucket truck -- Ladder Tower 1 -- along with Sparky. Lead cars will escort Santa around town with sirens on and Christmas music playing so families will know when to come outside to see him. The escort will be slower than it’s been in the past so all children will have enough time to get outside to see Santa. That day, the Kearny Fire Department will offer location updates throughout the day as to Santa’s precise location on Facebook. You’ll also be able to find Santa’s route sometime this week on the KFD’s Facebook page (www.facebook. com/KearnyFireDepartment). Santa’s visit is a joint effort of the Kearny Fire and Police departments.

buildings that are currently under construction. The site superintendent reported he had video footage showing that just before 5 a.m., a man entered the vacant apartment building, stripped off his clothes, put a black garbage bag around his waist and began running around and riding the elevators.

At one point, the suspect was believed to have carried a ladder from an adjacent construction site and left it in a second floor apartment. The suspect entered several unlocked apartments and the superintendent believed he broke the door handle of one apartment with a hammer that had been on site. A building contractor, meanwhile, reported he was parked near the apartment building entrance around 5:30 a.m., when the suspect knocked on his truck’s window asking if the contractor could get him back into the same apartment which was later found to have a broken door handle. The suspect was clad only in his garbage bag. The contractor decided to leave and contact the site superintendent about the incident. At 6 that morning, the suspect was seen on video to have re-dressed, to have walked out of the apartment building and he then disappeared into the ether. Det. Jonathan Dowie took up the investigation. Based on the suspect’s apparent familiarity with the apartment building, Det. Dowie reviewed extensive video footage finding that the suspect had also entered the building with a suitcase on Nov. 18, 19, 20 and 22. He had apparently spent those nights in the apartments, leaving in the mornings before contractors arrived for work. Just before 3:30 a.m. on Nov. 25, Officer Chris Montes and Anthony Oliveira had an interaction with a Therens W. Forjindam, 41, of Stoughton, Massachusetts. Forjindam was parked at Lincoln Avenue and Belgrove Drive in a Chevrolet pickup truck. In the truck with him was a suitcase, garbage bags and a fleece that were consistent with those seen on the video of the nude burglary. After further investigation, Det. Dowie charged Forjindam with five counts of both burglary and theft of services. Forjindam was arrested later that day at police headquarters and was sent to the Hudson County Jail, South Kearny. On Nov. 24 at 9:54 p.m., Officer Anthony Oliveira and

POLICE BEAT several back-up officers were dispatched to Walmart for a reported dispute in the selfcheckout area. By the time police arrived, the dispute had migrated to the parking lot. Store staff reported that a group of people were bagging unpaid-for merchandise at the self-checkout, which caused a store employee to approach and pause the transaction. This led to an argument in which it was alleged that Kanaya C. Price-Fillmore, 22, of Newark, became “irate” with the employee and accidentally struck her before exiting the store with the unpaid-for merchandise. The merchandise – including numerous Febreze plug-ins and sprays, strawberries, girls’ briefs and something called a “Hot Box” – retailed at $76.25. Fillmore was charged on a warrant with shoplifting and held in the Hudson County Jail. She was concurrently wanted on two Paramus warrants charging her with trespass and receiving stolen property, each with $1,000 bail; and on a Millburn warrant charging her with shoplifting, which carried $100 bail. On Dec. 1 at 6:29 p.m., Dets. Dave Bush, Mike Andrews, and Officer Kyle Plaugic arrested Nicole S. Docatis, 41, of Kearny, near Kearny and Johnston avenues. The plainclothes officers reported they witnessed Docatis, who was already the subject of an arrest warrant for a prior drug possession charge, purchase illegal narcotics in Newark and then return to Kearny with the contraband. Seized from Docatis during her arrest was a cigarette pack containing two wax folds of heroin stamped “Always Good” and two glass vials of cocaine. Docatis was charged on a summons with possession of heroin, cocaine and drug paraphernalia. Docatis’s friend posted the $600 bail on her outstanding warrant, so she was released from police headquarters.

Despite COVID-19, we mustn’t forget HIV & AIDS epidemic

ec. 1 was world AIDS Day. Each year, it is a stark reminder of the epidemic that has taken away so many lives in such a brutal manner. And in the midst of a global pandemic in COVID-19, it might be easy to forget that despite many advances, HIV & AIDS is still a global epidemic that so many people, so many families, still face. In 1995, I saw my first uncle who was HIV+ die from complications from AIDS. It was one of the most horrifying things I’ve ever personally witnessed. Near the end, listening to him struggle to take a simple breath was next to impossible. The sound of strained breathing — it was as if he had a 20-pound weight on his chest — still haunts me to this very day. The last week of his life, he struggled with what appeared to be dimentia, sometime not knowing where he was, other times unable to recall where the bathroom was. Ten years later, another uncle died from the same complications, though fortunately, he didn’t suffer half as much as his younger brother had a decade earlier. Though so many advances have been made that have allowed HIV & AIDS to no longer be a death sentence, it’s still has a stronghold in the world. Consider this: • 38 million people were living as HIV+ in 2019. • Nearly 2 million new cases of HIV were reported in 2019. • Nearly 700,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses in 2019. • Nearly 76 million people have been HIV+ since the illness was first defined in the early 1980s. • More than 32 million people have died from AIDSrelated illnesses. • It is estimated that more than 7 million people were living, unaware they were HIV+. These numbers are chilling, despite all the warnings of how dangerous this virus may be. Yes, we’ve made great progress. But there has to come a day, soon, when not one life is lost to this hideous virus. Each Dec. 1 we’re reminded of that. Let us hope and pray that soon, when Dec. 1 comes, it serves only as a reminder of what happened in the past — and never again serves as a reminder of what could lie ahead. — Canessa

Rose: What will the overall result be from legalizing marijuana in Jersey? To the Editor: The enormous amount of money spent by those lobbyists looking to get marijuana legalized in New Jersey drowned out any information on the problems other states were experiencing due to its legalization. Will more automobile accidents occur due to people driving under the influence? Will the amount of people checking into drug rehab dramatically increase? Will more young people start smoking it?

More driving accidents means higher auto insurance rates for all of us. More people seeking medical assistance means our health insurance premiums will rise. Younger people smoking means more problems at school and in the workplace. I don’t think that anyone could disagree with the social justice concerns which was the main argument for legalizing marijuana, but decriminalization and legalization are two different kettles of fish. Rather than use the revenue

collected from the sale of marijuana to benefit all of New Jersey’s citizens it seems that 70% of the taxes collected will go to communities specified by our lawmakers and an additional optional ‘’social-equity excise fee” may be levied by the Cannabis Regulatory Commission. What are the chances that any of the revenue collected from the sale of cannabis will be received by any of the communities served by The Observer? Armand Rose North Arlington

Lots for the holidays upcoming on ARS By JoAnn Barton Special to The Observer Well, we knew it was coming but this year the holidays are a little different, for everyone. If you are like me, this past year has been a year of, I cannot wait for it to be over, one day rolls into the next and any slight resemblance of an event is marred by…really, its here already? Christmas has always been the one holiday that catches me by surprise. Last minute shopping, putting up the tree late, etc. So, I thought I would do my best to remind myself that it was here and hopefully lift as many up as I can. Applause Radio Show is bringing you as many holiday-related guests as possible. To kick it all off, on Nov. 24, we had 80s pop icon Tiffany on the show for a special broadcast. Tiffany, notably known for her remake of, “I Think We’re Alone Now,” originally by Tommy James and the Shondells, has new music coming out in 2021. In the meantime, she has released a new Christmas single titled “Angels.” “The song is about hope and missing family,” Tiffany said. “In my more than 30-year career, I’ve never recorded an original Christmas song, but it just felt right. It’s

raw and real and that’s what makes it special to me.” Tiffany co-wrote and recorded “Angels” in her home studio with Mark Alberici and Margie Hauser. The song is a reflective, sentimental, yet optimistic look at the feelings of loneliness and isolation during these current hard times with a longing for the nostalgic feeling that Christmas brings and the joys of seeing family and loved ones during the holiday season. The show got off to a rocky start as connecting Tiffany was a slight issue. She was traveling and called into the show while heading to an event in Florida. She was a pleasure to speak with and when her new release comes out, she will be returning to the show. The song was released Dec. 4 and is available online or at www.tiffanytunes.com. Not related to Christmas but somewhat to December was author/musician David Stark. David came to us from London and we had a great conversation. His new book titled “It’s All Too Much” is about his experiences growing up as a Beatles fan and then becoming friends with them and eventually working with them. An utterly amazing story

of being at the right place at the right time and then the book wrote itself from there. Its release date is Dec, 8, coincidentally the 40th anniversary of John Lennon’s assassination on the streets of New York in front of his own home. I will never forget that day and David wishes he could. I will say that I am glad that I attended Strawberry Fields in Central Park with friends to pay respects, an experience I will never forget. “It’s All Too Much” is a unique memoir by the music industry veteran who grew up in north London during the 1960s as a dedicated Beatles fan and was lucky enough to meet his musical heroes on various memorable occasions. Nutley’s Searle earns Second Team AllState honors

ho would have ever guessed that someone named William L. Marcy would have played such a major role in a sports column written in New Jersey some 170 years after Marcy uttered what has now become a wellused lexicon in the sports world? No, it’s not the William H. Macy from “Shameless” fame. Or the Bill Macy who played Maude’s husband Walter in the classic sitcom of the same name. Nope, this guy was a New York senator who was running for a seat in the United States Congress. And in a debate in 1831, Marcy said “to the victor goes the spoils,” describing how elected officials were the ones who hand out governmental jobs. Maybe Marcy’s comments remain truthful when it comes to handing out year-end honors in sports, say high school football. It’s astounding that it had been 10 years since Nutley High School’s football team had a representative on the All-State squad. One would think that a strong and storied program such as Nutley would have had at least one player reach All-New Jersey levels. But the Maroon Raiders did not have a player receive All-State accolades since Nick Tedesco was selected to the state’s Second Team in 2010. Yes, to the victors go the spoils. Although the Maroon Raiders had great seasons in 2014 and 2015 under former head coach Tom Basile, posting a 7-3 mark in 2014 and going 8-2 in 2015, the organizations that select All-State teams totally ignored the Maroon Raiders those seasons. But when you enjoy an undefeated season, a divisional championship season at that, chances are you can find someone to get recognized on an All-State team. That’s what happened last week when standout lineman Billy Searle was selected to the USA TODAY Network All-State team, earning Second Team honors as an offensive lineman. Again, to the victors go the spoils. It’s not saying that Nutley hasn’t had a deserving player over the last decade to be named All-State. It’s just that it’s harder to get recognized by the people who pick the teams when you’re on a team that isn’t as successful as others. See VIEW, Page 11

s the first-year head coach of the Kearny High School girls’ soccer team, Mike Sylvia was still learning all the names of players on his roster when he stumbled across a dilemma. Sylvia was introduced to the Schivel twins, Gabriela and Tatyanne, born one minute apart, with Gabriela the elder. The two sisters claim that they’re not identical twins, but it’s next to impossible to tell the difference between the two. “They both have the same haircut and everything,” Sylvia said. “They came to practice with the masks on and I said to myself, ‘How can I tell?’ I noticed that they wore different cleats, so I said, ‘That’s fine, but you can’t change cleats.’ It’s so hard to tell the difference, more so than I let on.” “Once you get to know us, you can tell the difference,” Gabriela Schivel said. “It’s really a lot of fun,” Tatyanne Schivel said. “We share each other’s thoughts. We have inside jokes that we tell to each other. We fight over the dumbest things, like who gets to use the bathroom first.” Tatyanne said that the sisters have a lot of the same interests in hip hop music and soccer teams. “We’re Brazilian, so we have to like Brazil,” Tatyanne Schivel said. Across the Passaic River, there’s another set

of soccer playing twins – and these two are indeed identical, although it took one to enter the world a little after the other. “There are 20 minutes between us,” said Rachel Echevarria the elder of the Nutley High School girls’ soccer twins. “It’s always fun to have someone there alongside me. We borrow each other’s clothes. We help each other with homework. Since I’m older, I always tell her what to do, but it’s always good to have someone to do stuff together.” Rachel and twin sister Rebecca share a lot of the same interests, like the Marvel movie series, watching movies on Netflix and listening to the rapper Travis Scott. “I listen to music way much more than she does,” Rebecca Echevarria said. It also helps that both play soccer and basketball. “We’ve been playing sports since we were little,” Rebecca Echevarria said. “It’s great to always have someone I can train with. It’s really beneficial to have my sister around.” But the two do have their differences. “Rachel doesn’t like condiments,” Rebecca Echevarria said. “She doesn’t like mayonnaise. I find that to be really weird.” The two are pranksters as well, using their identical status to their benefit. “We were in seventh grade and we pretended to be each other for the entire day,” Rebecca Echevarria said. “We had our See TWINS, Page 10

Continued from Page 9 teacher going. It was a lot of fun.” “It’s really funny seeing people’s reactions,” Rachel Echevarria said. Nutley girls’ soccer head coach Mike DiPiano struggled with the difference for a bit. “When they were younger, I could not tell them apart,” DiPiano said. “My daughter (Mia) is a year younger and she picked up that they wore different colors. So that’s how I started. Then I picked up different mannerisms and how they talk. It’s just little things. One wears a different color headband. That’s how I can tell.” It’s safe to say that all four twins – all of whom are juniors, by the way -- had

their hand in their respective team’s successes this season. The Schivel sisters helped Kearny attain a 10-1 season, capturing the championship of the Hudson County Interscholastic Athletic League. Gabriela Schivel had five goals and one assist, while Tatyanne Schivel had three goals and three assists. Gabriela is a center midfielder and Tatyanne plays more of a wing slot. “Gabby has taken to the center midfield slot and has never let it go,” Sylvia said. “She has the responsibility to lead the attack, then get back and defend. It’s nice to have someone who is so consistent with her play. It takes a lot of the pressure off everyone else. She reads the game well and creates opportunities for others. She has a real intelligent soccer brain. She sees things that are

happening in the game and she’s excellent with that. Added Sylvia, “Taty has been so amazing this year. She’s done everything we ask of her. She plays right next to her sister and when we needed her, she goes right in

the back. She has been a gift for us. She has that flexibility and versatility.” The Schivel twins are close, but remember, they are sisters. “We both have our days,” Tatyanne Schivel said. “We’re both fiercely competitive. We know where each other are on the field.” “We might fight on the field, but it’s only because we want each other to be better players,” Gabriela Schivel said. “I know where she wants the ball.” The Echevarria sisters helped Nutley to an 8-7-1 record, playing in the Super Essex Conference-Liberty Division, the toughest girls’ soccer league in the state. Rachel Echevarria is a defender, but Rebecca had seven goals and six assists. Rachel Echevarria loves playing with her sister. “I can always trust her with the ball,” Rachel Echevarria said. “It’s really enjoyable. When we do something, we’re able to do it together.” “When we’re playing, it’s really a lot of fun watching her do what she does,”

Conjunctivitis, more commonly known as pink eye, is one of the most common types of eye infections. It can develop due to a multitude of different causes including bacteria, allergens, irritants, and viruses. Pink eye gets its name from the pinkish red color that occurs when the membrane covering the eye and the inside of the eyelids becomes inflamed. When pink eye is caused by a virus (the most common cause of the condition) or bacteria, it is highly contagious and will continue to be so until about 24 to 48 hours after antibiotics are started. Continued from Page 9 The Maroon Raiders won all six of their games this year with the 6-foot-2, 285-pound Searle leading the way along both lines of scrimmage. When Searle was called by his uncle, namely Nutley athletic director Joe Piro, that he was selected for the All-State team, he didn’t realize the magnitude of the honor. “I first thought it was like All-Group III or something,” Searle said. “But then I saw all the names involved and realized it was the entire state. I thought that this was a really cool moment.” It’s the latest stop on a remarkable journey that is Billy Searle’s football career, considering that he was always too big to play youth football in Nutley and never played organized football until enrolling at Nutley High. “I never put pads on,” Searle said. “I didn’t even know how to get in a threepoint stance.” And now, Searle is considered among the top 34 players in the entire state. “I had no clue something like this could happen,” Searle said. “It’s pretty surreal.” Searle said that he always longed to play football as a youngster, even if weight restrictions prohibited him

from playing. “It always was hard for me, because all the guys who played were all of my best friends and I had to stand on the sidelines and watch them,” Searle said. “I would go to the games and support them, but I wanted to play. That was the biggest kick to my stomach that I couldn’t be out there with my friends. But my family would tell me that I would always get a chance to play.” Searle said that Piro was very instrumental in his development as a player. “It was tough for me to pick up the sport,” Searle said. “But my Uncle Joey would take me to the field and teach me how to play. So as soon as I got past the first few practices in high school, I knew what I was doing. I just needed the chance to play.” Searle is also an accomplished wrestler who will head to the mats as soon as it is safe to return. Searle is convinced that wrestling helped him become a better football player. “To be honest, I didn’t know I would be playing football until I wrestled,” Searle said. “It made me so much more aggressive. I try to explain that to every kid that I talk to. I play football the way I do because I chose to wrestle.” Searle said that he took wrestling more seriously as a sophomore at Nutley and watched his career blossom. Nutley head football

coach Steve DiGregorio has enjoyed a solid relationship with Searle since Searle was a little boy – and yes, he was once little. “Our relationship goes way back,” DiGregorio said. “It goes back to Billy coming to our football camp every year. This is the culmination of his career ending with this honor. I’m very thrilled for him. It’s a heck of an honor.” DiGregorio believes that the accolade will assist Searle in his attempt to land a college scholarship. “Recruiters say, ‘Who’s this kid who made All-State?’” DiGregorio said. “It helps to put Billy on the radar. It gives his body of work a little more credibility.” Earning All-State honors have already paid off for Searle. “I’ve spoken with 13 or so colleges,” Searle said of the NCAA Division II and Division III recruiters. “I feel like this honor has definitely helped me get recognition.” DiGregorio said that Searle was always a model football player. “He was always determined athletically,” DiGregorio said. “Even as a kid, he was always around, watching the games. He came to our camps. He committed himself to do the right things. He always kept working harder and became a dominant player. Now, he’s a fixture.” As Searle now prepares for the upcoming wrestling

season, he realizes one thing. He likes being a football player. “A couple of weeks ago, I realized that I always wanted to play football,” Searle said. “As soon as the clock hit zero (in the Maroon Raiders’ final game against Belleville), I knew I wanted to keep playing football. If someone tells me that I can do both in college, I’ll give it a try. I just have to see if I’m given the option. I just love competing. I can’t sit back and watch.” DiGregorio was pleased to watch Searle develop as a

player and as a young man. “We’re very blessed to have someone like Billy,” DiGregorio said. “We’re happy that he received a postseason honor. For us, it happens so infrequently that we’re happy we have someone who deserved it.” Maybe William L. Marcy was right after all. Obituaries ROBERT J. ELLIOTT

Robert J. Elliott died Nov. 17, 2020. He was 76. Born and raised in Kearny, he had a long career with the phone company starting with Western Electric and ending with Nokia. He was an avid sports fan, but his real love was playing and watching golf and bowling. He was predeceased by his parents William and Loretta Elliott and sisters Susan Chew and Diane Eccles. He is survived by his loving wife Isabella Elliott (nee McQuilkin) and is cherished by his three daughters Barbara Johnson (Michael), Mary Elliott Carri and Christine Elliott. He is loved by his grandchildren Michael Johnson Jr., Danie Johnson, Crystal Dickson, Stephen Carri and Braeden Carri. Brother to Lawrence Elliott (Carol) and Daren Elliott (Marilyn), he had many wonderful nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends. He was adored by all his grand furbabies. A memorial Mass to celebrate Robert’s life will take place at 11 a.m., Dec. 12, 2020, at St. Stephen’s Church in Kearny.

Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, on Oct. 5, 1936, Elba moved to New York City with her family in 1970. In the early ‘80s she moved to Harrison and eventually settled into East Newark. She worked as a cashier at a local laundromat for many years, where she was known and loved by all in the neighborhood, called ““Grandma” by many of the local children. She was always willing to lend an ear and offer a helping hand in any way she could, earning her a place in the hearts of many in the community. While we will all miss her in our daily lives, we’re comforted to know that she is resting peacefully. Elba is survived by her children, Elba, Angel, Manuel, Hector, Marcos and Harry; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Luis “Tito” Mora (2014). Robert J. Geiger, 76, died Dec. 4, 2020. Born in Yonkers, New York, he lived in North Arlington for the past 50 years. He proudly served with the Honor Guard in the United States Army during Vietnam. He worked as a shop steward for the IBEW Local No. 3 in Manhattan for over 25 years before retiring in 2003. While with the IBEW, he worked on the construction of the World Trade Center Twin Towers. He was a member of the IBEW Catholic Council, Colony Club and Allied Club, and a member of the Westchester Mechanics. He was a member of the Historical Society and the Knee-deep Club in Lake Hopatcong. He worked at Shea Stadium as a score keeper for the New York Mets for over 30 years. Robert was the cherished husband of the late Phyllis

Geiger ( nee Becroft ); the devoted father of Kirk Geiger and Jamie-Day Geiger; the beloved Pop Pop of Nicholas Geiger, Jackson and Sloane Delaney; and the dear brother of the late William Geiger. Carlos is survived by his mother, Enma Franco; wife, Grace Galarza Sarmiento; his children Carlos Hipolito Sarmiento, Maria Paulina Sarmiento and Ana Maria Sarmiento; and his grandchildren Tiago Antonio Ribeiro and Ryder Alejandro Ribeiro. Carlos was born in Ecuador on July 10, 1954, where he served as a captain of artillery in the Ecuadorian Armed Forces prior to moving to the United States where he dedicated his career to transportation services. Carlos was a devoted father, husband and grandfather. He enjoyed joking with and spending time with his family, especially his two grandsons Tiago and Ryder, who have gained so much from his love and dedication. He was a strong, resilient and loving man who will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

For starters, because of social distancing, Santa Satter cannot allow any children to get close to him. “There’s no sitting on my lap,” Santa Satter says. “Sometimes when they see me, the kids’ instinct is to run to me, but I have to hold out my arm to keep them far enough away.” Santa Satter says it’s heartbreaking to have to do that -- but it’s a sign of the times. And whilst lap-photos aren’t possible, he’s still been able to bring Christmas happiness as St. Nick in differing ways. “All the events so far have been outside events,” Santa Satter says. “From tree lightings, to parades, to making videos, it’s still been a lot of fun.” In some of these events, Santa Satter has read the story, “Who Will Guide My Sleigh Tonight?” which he says the kids have really

enjoyed. He’s also done drive-by events in some towns. “We pass houses, but of course, everyone has to watch from a distance,” Santa Satter says. “I also did a program at a hospital in Hackettstown. We drove through. They could watch from windows or from cars with their windows down. As in all events, Santa has to wear a mask, too, because we want to keep everyone safe, even if they’re at a distance.

“I call mine a Merry Christmask.” Secaucus contracted for Santa Satter’s services recently. For them, it was a video. In Rutherford, Santa Satter took part in a parade, on a sleigh, and he was escorted by the town’s fire department. Originally, two Clydesdale horses were slated to pull him along, but because of the weather of the day, that was scrapped and a tractor guided him through the streets, instead. “Here, again, I had to wave to

people as they came out, but no one could come close,” Santa Satter says. “I brought a bell with me, you know, kind of like a hand bell. A local opera singer sang ‘You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch’ and that was fun. The end was the lighting of the tree.” So while things are a bit different, it should be clear that Santa Satter has still been able -- and will continue to be able for the next few weeks -- to bring the same happiness he’s brought to countless children and families since he started doing this in 2007. Santa Satter says he has a message for all the boys and girls of the world in 2020 that is a tad different from other years. “Be sure to wash your hands, stay six feet apart, so that you, mommy and daddy, and kids all over the world can be together for Christmas again next year,” he says. “And please be sure to wear your mask over your face and not to cover your neck.
