After years of work & delays, the new Wittpenn Bridge is finally

t’s taken much longer than initially expected. But the new Wittpenn Bridge that links Kearny to Jersey City is one step closer to becoming a reality. The New Jersey Department of Transportation last week installed a unique bridge deck for the new

Route 7/Wittpenn Bridge, marking a major milestone in the construction of a new vertical lift bridge to replace the existing bridge. The Wittpenn Bridge over the Hackensack River project is completely replacing the existing bridge with a new, wider vertical lift bridge, doubling the vertical clearance over the Hackensack River from 35-feet to 70-feet, resulting in

fewer openings and less congestion. The Orthotropic Deck for the new bridge was lifted into place over three days last week using one of the largest crane barges in the country. The deck was constructed in three sections, one section lifted into place each day over three days. The NJDOT’s contractor, CCA Civil, Inc., is currently bolting steel

connectors to join the three deck sections, along with the end floor beams, to make one complete lift span unit. Later this month, the full, new deck will be connected to the lift span cables. This is the first time this innovative type of deck has been used in New Jersey. It was manufactured See WITTPENN, Page 19

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In November 1999, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

I was in terrible shock, but I knew I had to remain calm for my children. My health was always very well and I didn’t have a family history of this disease. I am very grateful because I had tremendous support from my mother, sisters, family, friends. My husband's love was unconditional and my children were my greatest supporters. For about three years after my diagnosis, I had been wondering how to help other survivors. Sixteen years ago for the first time in Kearny, we kicked off the "Tie a Ribbon" campaign, thanks to our Mayor Alberto G. Santos and councilmembers, Deb Belfatto, the former Executive Director of the Susan G. Komen North Jersey affiliate, Lisa Feorenzo of The Observer, Rosemary Dressler (former volunteer director of West Hudson Hospital), survivors, volunteers and family. Since 2005, we have been doing "Tie a Ribbon" in East Newark and Harrison, now with a great support of Minette's Angels Foundation and the Lucy Angel Foundation. As a breast cancer survivor, I learned keeping a positive attitude is a way to overcome any challenge. I use affirmations and uplifting messages every day, and of course, I am still dancing. In Memoriam: Barbara Thompson, aged 91

arbara Thompson had a certain elegance about her. When she walked into a room — whether it was for a Kearny Council meeting, or at a fundraiser or anything else for that matter — it was as though royalty were nearby. In a way, she was the QE2 of Kearny. Thompson, who spent many years on the Kearny Council as a representative of the town’s Third Ward and who also spent time as the council’s president, died Sept. 21, 2020. She was 91. Though Thompson was a lifelong Republican, her loss was felt by those of all political persuasions. Kenneth H. Lindenfelser

was Kearny’s penultimate GOP mayor in 1993 and 1994 and whilst he led the town, Thompson was on the council. He took time last week to reflect on that life that was Thompson’s from his home down the

Jersey Shore. “Barbara was intelligent, personable and strong minded, yet always respectful,” Lindenfelser, who also spent time as the chairman of the Kearny Republican party,

Back in 1995, Doyle ran for the Kearny mayoralty as a Democrat against then-Mayor Leo R. Vartan, the last Republican ever to sit in the mayor’s seat. Though Doyle’s run fell painfully short (it was a very close election), she was able to bring together people from both political parties to support her upstart candidacy.

Her principal supporter? Stalwart Republican Barbara Thompson. “I was saddened to learn of the passing of Barbara Thompson,” Doyle said. “She was a friend, even though we were from different political parties. We were in tandem when it came to serving the people of the Third Ward. Barbara was a mentor to me over the years and knew when to share her thoughts long after she left office. “I will remember her laugh and laugh we did. Friends can easily put aside political differences when you genuinely like and respect someone and we shared that mutual respect. My sympathies go out to her family.” The Observer’s coowner Lisa Feorenzo knew Thompson from their time spent together as members of the Salvation Army of Greater Kearny’s Advisory Board. “Whenever I’d see Barbara after we were no longer on the board, she would always take time to say hello,” Feorenzo said. “She was such a wonderful woman. “All she ever wanted to do was help people. And in my mind, that’s exactly what she did so well. She gave so much of her life to make this a better community. “Our town is so much better to this very day because of Barbara. She will be missed.”

Officer, fearing for his life, discharges his weapon: reports By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com

police officer in Kearny opened fire at the driver of a stolen car that was heading toward him when he was preparing to speak with its driver near Applebee’s, Passaic Avenue, on Tuesday, Sept. 29, sources told The Observer last week. Here’s what we know. According to a source with knowledge of the incident, but who was unauthorized to speak about the shooting: The incident took place just before 8 p.m., Sept. 29. The car had been reported stolen just moments earlier from someplace on Devon Street. Video The Observer obtained of the suspect vehicle being abandoned in Newark appeared to be a white Hyundai SUV. The officer reportedly spotted the stolen vehicle and, on foot, approached it — and while doing so, the driver accelerated toward him. It was at that moment the officer fired at the car. We’re told the police pursued the vehicle from Kearny to Newark, but it was ultimately lost in traffic. However, police in Newark recovered the vehicle, abandoned, shortly thereafter.

POLICE BEAT The driver, as-yet unidentified, was seen running away from the scene by a truck driver in Newark, who had video footage that unfortunately wasn’t easy to see because of the rain that fell that night. The driver of the stolen car may have sustained a gunshot wound — blood was found in the abandoned Hyundai — but authorities could not determine whether it was from a gunshot. The Newark Police Department reportedly used a K-9 dog to sniff the driver’s scent, but was unable to find him. Social media reports that the driver died nearby, on the Kearny side of the Passaic River, are indeed incorrect. The Kearny officer is “OK, shaken but unhurt,” we’re told. Since this was a police-involved shooting, it is being investigated by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. The HCPO says it has informed Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal of the shooting as required by policy. Editor’s note: The last police-involved shooting in Kearny was in 2016. The last homicide was in 2017.

On Sept. 25 at 10:04 p.m., Officer Sean Podolski was dispatched to the 200 block of Maple Street on a report of a street fight. There, he found a 54-year-old Kearny man who alleged that Byron P. Garcia Ojeda, 27, of Kearny, backed into his car as he was backing into a parking space. Garcia Ojeda allegedly argued that he had not hit anything. The complainant, joined by his son, said they took Garcia Ojeda’s keys out of his car because they believed he was intoxicated and they did not want him to drive away. The complainant alleged Garcia Ojeda responded to this by punching him in the mouth and kicking him in the leg. The complainant sustained a cut lip and painful leg, but refused transport to a hospital. When Garcia Ojeda performed poorly on a battery of field-sobriety tests, he was arrested and charged with drunken driving and reckless driving. Garcia Ojeda was

later released to a family member. On Sept. 26 at 10:14 a.m., Officers John Fearon and Alan Stickno were summoned to Kmart on a report of a shoplifter fleeing the store. The officers found the suspect, Antwan S. Zimmerman, 33, of Newark, walking southbound on Passaic Avenue passing Shop-Rite. After further investigation in which Kmart staff reported Zimmerman took $67.97 of clothing into the restroom and then emerged with the merchandise hidden under the clothes he was wearing, Zimmerman then allegedly made his exit without paying. Zimmerman was charged on a warrant with shoplifting and with being a fugitive from justice, since he was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service. He was remanded to the Hudson County Jail, South Kearny. On Sept. 26 at 2:53 p.m., Officer Mat Lopez saw a male driving a dirt bike on the sidewalk at See KPD, Page 16

Hudson County has placed drop boxes in numerous locations countywide. Belleville man nabbed on child-porn charges A Belleville man was arrested Sept. 24 on charges that he allegedly possessed images of child sexual abuse and that he distributed them on the internet, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said. Mauricio Calderon, 49, of Belleville, is charged by complaint with one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. He was scheduled to make his initial appearance by videoconference Sept. 24 before U.S. Magistrate Judge Edward S. Kiel. According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court: Between March 2020 and April 10, 2020, Calderon reportedly used an Internet-based application to distribute multiple graphic videos depicting the sexual abuse of

minors. During the course of the investigation, Calderon allegedly publicly posted in a chatroom multiple videos depicting the sexual abuse of children, and also sent links that redirected to webpages containing child pornography. Law enforcement reportedly discovered numerous videos and images of child sexual abuse on Calderon’s electronic devices when he was arrested at his home on Sept. 24. The charge of distribution of child pornography carries a mandatory minimum penalty of five years in prison, a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and fine of $250,000. The charge of possession of child pornography carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and fine of $250,000.

American legion picnic sells out

Former residents: Stop bashing your old town. Your sentiments are wrong

On Saturday, Sept. 19, American Legion Post 105 and Sons of the American Legion Squadron 105 in Belleville hosted its annual picnic in the parking lot behind the Post, under clear blue skies. It ended up being the largest picnic in Post 105 history. The picnic is the Post’s single largest fundraiser, with over 200 supporters of the American Legion in attendance.

ast week, there was an incident that involved a police shooting. A man who had stolen a car on Devon Street, Kearny, was spotted by a police officer near the Applebee’s on Passaic Avenue. Not surprisingly, the driver of the vehicle took off toward the officer who was approaching the vehicle, according to reports. As such, the officer, who feared for his life, shot at the vehicle. At this point, we don’t know whether the alleged car thief was hit because we’re told he got away and has escaped justice thus far. But fortunately, from all accounts, it was a proper shooting. Yet on social media, there were countless instances of people being critical of their former hometown of Kearny. From comments like, “I’m sure glad I moved away,” to “Kearny sure has changed” found their way on forums and people’s walls. Ad nauseam. These comments as a whole were abhorrent, but most importantly, extremely inaccurate. The last time a Kearny police officer discharged a weapon was four years ago in the parking lot of the Walmart. The last homicide took place more than three years ago on Chestnut Street following a horrible domestic dispute. While the demographics of the town have certainly changed over the last few decades, one thing has not: Kearny is a very safe town that continues to see a decline in indexed crime. (We’ll bring you those statistics at the start of 2021 when the FBI releases its annaul Uniform Crime Report.) But consider this — despite being bordered on one side by Jersey City and on another side by Newark — two places where crime is indeed an issue, and considering our close proximity to the five boroughs of New York City, where crime has become an issue again, it is fair to say Kearny continues to shine, crime-wise — and it is fair to say Kearny sets an example of how living just outside the world’s largest metropolis doesn’t mean it shares the same crime volume. The town’s police department and its leadership should be commended for this allowing for this notion, as well. Kearny has not become more dangerous than it was in the past. It is still, as it always has been, a very safe place to live. Does it have issues? If it didn’t, there wouldn’t be a police blotter in this newspaper every week. But to say it has become more dangerous is absurdly unfair. And when people afar say otherwise, they’re doing the town an inaccurate injustice. Maybe a visit back home would help. Or maybe they’re just too scared of what they’ll see?

Nutley’s grid team opens with impressive win over Newark West Side

Belleville’s Bucs begin grid season with big win The Belleville High School football team was the toast of Essex County a year ago, winning seven games, the highest win total the Buccaneers enjoyed since 1981. It was a dramatic turnaround for the Buccaneers in head coach Jermain Johnson’s second year. His first year led to four wins for the Bucs, after the program won a total of 12 games over the prior eight seasons. And then, the Bucs win seven games, going 7-3 and just missing out on a berth in the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group IV playoff berth. It was almost unfathomable, like a fairytale story. So what could Johnson do for an encore? Well, the 2020 season provided its major obstacle with the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic that first brought everything to a screeching halt, then delayed the start of the football season by a month, then forced everyone to take a two-week respite from every activity in September in order to begin the season the first weekend of October. Got all that? “It definitely derailed us a little bit,” Johnson said. “It was hard, not knowing if they were going to shut us down. Not being able to do anything at all hurt us big time. It hurt us not being able to go to camp.” But there still was a positive carryover from the 2019 season, as a total of 52 young men showed interest in playing football at Belleville, despite the situation caused by COVID. That total is astounding, considering that just a few years ago, Belleville operated at dangerously low levels of players – like in the 20s – almost unheard of for a Group IV school. “There was a positive carryover,” Johnson said. “But we were so young.” Johnson was able to begin practicing full time three weeks ago – of course with the now-standard social distancing regulations. “There were a lot of people who didn’t think we were going to play at all this year,” Johnson said. But lo and behold, there were the Buccaneers in full gear getting pumped to take the field last Friday night against a tough customer in Millburn. The result? Belleville 12, Millburn 7. The carryover made it to the scoreboard. The Buccaneers were victorious. Something wonderful is happening with Johnson’s program once again. “It’s awesome,” Johnson said. “We honestly thought we had a good shot to win the game. The kids we have See VIEW, Page 11

It is rare for tumors to develop primarily in the eye. John J. Fitzpatrick, 90, of Fairfield, formerly of Kearny, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020. The Beloved husband of Anna (nee Walsh) Fitzpatrick, he was the loving father of Mary Ellen and her husband Roger Ludwig, Sean and his wife Maryann Fitzpatrick, Patricia and her husband Edward Kennedy and the late Baby John Fitzpatrick. The cherished grandfather of Sean S., Conor, Suzanna, Aidan, Katelyn, Colin, Logan, Ryan and the late Dylan, he was the dear brother of Patrick and his wife Cissie Fitzpatrick, Peter and his late wife Marilyn Fitzpatrick, the late Maryann Cassidy and the late Hughie Fitzpatrick. Mr. Fitzpatrick was a member and past treasurer of the Frank McGovern Association in Newark. He was an active parishioner of St. Cecilia Church in Kearny, and he was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Knight of Columbus Council 13357. Maria Eberwein (née Hedman), a resident of North Arlington, died Sept. 25, 2020 She was 83. Maria was born in Östersund, Sweden. At the age of 20, Maria studied foreign languages, becoming proficient in English, French, Spanish and Latin. She traveled to the United States when she was 26, intending to visit and return home to

Sweden. But then she met Philip in New York City, got married and set down roots in North Arlington. After spending 10 years as a full-time wife and mother of two daughters, Anna and Cecilia, Maria returned to work as a secretary and administrative assistant. She pursued an associate degree at night at New York University. In her late 40s, she attended a graphic arts school and became a graphic artist. She loved this career and worked at AICPA (American Institute of Certified Public Accountants) until she retired. Maria loved languages, reading, embroidery and crossword puzzles. Her voracious reading interests varied, including the Latin version of Winnie the Pooh. She could finish a New York Times crossword in under an hour and was a human dictionary, even in English, her second language. Priest with local ties arrested by UCPO

Roman Catholic priest who previously served at St. Stephen’s Church, Kearny, Sacred Heart Church, Lyndhurst, and as the chaplain of Oratory Preparatory School, Summit, has been arrested and charged with engaging in a pattern of behavior that threatened the welfare of six students, acting Union County Prosecutor Lyndsay V. Ruotolo announced Thursday, Oct. 1. The Rev. Salvatore DiStefano, 61, was charged with five counts of second-degree use of a juvenile to commit a crime and six counts of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child. DiStefano’s arrest was made by members of the UCPO assigned to the New Jersey Clergy Abuse Task Force, which was formed by Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal in September 2018 to investigate allegations of clergy abuse. DiStefano is the fourth

priest to be charged in criminal cases filed by the task force. The charges are the result of an investigation by the UCPO’s Special Victims Unit (SVU) into DiStefano’s conduct as the leader of an official school club of about 30 hand-picked Oratory Prep students, known as the “Knights of Malta,” according to SVU Supervisor and Union County Assistant Prosecutor Caroline Lawlor, who is prosecuting the case. According to the investigators, as the leader of the group, DiStefano engaged in a pattern of conduct that endangered the welfare of the club’s members. First, the investigation revealed DiStefano would frequently attempt to speak with the students about sex and instructed a student to masturbate to relieve stress. He also allegedly made repeated attempts to entice a student to accompany him

away from the school alone and took steps to conceal that activity, telling the student to leave his cell phone at school so his true location would be hidden from his parents when he met with him off-campus. The investigation also revealed, the UCPO says, that DiStefano would give his personal cell phone number to club members, routinely texting and calling them outside school hours, and instructing them to save his contact in their phones as “Malta” to conceal his identity. The investigation further revealed that, at various points in late 2019, DiStefano would allow his teenage victims to consume edible items infused with marijuana in his office. He also allegedly purchased tetrahydrocan-

nabinol (THC) cartridges, which students would smoke in DiStefano’s office while he was present, and provided students money so they could purchase such items for themselves. DiStefano also took actions designed to maintain his control over the group. At one point, according to the investigation, DiStefano reportedly attempted to convince multiple students to harass and otherwise intimidate a former Knights of Malta member who had been dismissed from the club, ordering them to make the victim’s daily life so difficult that he would quit (transfer out of) the school. These alleged efforts allegedly included convincing one student to post false and negative information about the other student on social media. In another instance, when DiStefano learned the former club member was hosting a party, he allegedly

ordered current club members to plan a competing party the same night so no one would show up at the former member’s party, all while ordering the current members to make a list of alcohol they wanted so he could buy it for them. When students or others expressed concerns about his conduct to DiStefano, he also allegedly took steps to cover up his activities, such as telling one victim to delete all of the text messages between them from his phone. DiStefano was arrested without incident Thursday, Oct. 1. 150th anniversary of Chinese arrival in Belleville marked by Historical Society The anniversary of the arrival of the first Chinese immigrants to Belleville 150 years ago in September 1870 was quietly observed recently. Margaret Lam and David Yen, chairpersons of the United Chinese American Association of New Jersey, set a roses at the Chinese monument at the cemetery of the old Bellville Dutch Reformed Church (now La Senda Antigua). Few are aware the Belleville Chinese community existed even before New York City’s Chinatown did. Lam and Yen were joined by Belleville Historical Society President Michael Perrone and North Arlington resident Val Hadshinow. The group then crossed the river into North Arlington to visit the still-standing mansion of Capt. James Hervey, the former sea captain and prominent business owner who brought Chinese immigrants from California to work in his Passaic Steam Laundry, the largest commercial laundry in America at

BELLEVILLE UPDATE that time. The Chinese community here began with the arrival of 68 Chinese men and boys from California and grew to 300. The first Chinese New Year on the east coast was celebrated here in February 1871, a Chinese temple was established and a school for the Chinese immigrants opened later that same year. For almost two decades, Belleville was a center of peaceful living for the Chinese with their elaborate celebrations, which were examples of a welcoming community in an era of strong anti-Chinese sentiment. The Belleville Historical society postponed its normal public events due to the pandemic and hopes to resume events possibly later this year.

The dirt bike operator then allegedly looked back at the police car before running a red light. A pursuit commenced on and off the sidewalk to Harrison Avenue by way of Schuyler and then Bergen avenues. Officer Lopez then terminated the pursuit upon getting close enough to identify the driver. The dirt bike was abandoned and recovered in short order by Det. Neil Nelson and Officer Pete Jahera in the meadowlands off of Breiderhoft Road. Officers Lopez and Ryan Brady went to the Harrison home of the 16-year-old dirt bike driver where they took him into custody without further incident. The boy was remanded to a county juvenile detention center by a court juvenile intake officer. On Sept. 29 at 3:02 p.m., Officers Sean Kelly and

Flores, 23, of Newark, who allegedly crashed her Honda Accord into an Audi S4 at this location while she was fleeing from an earlier crash Passaic and Linden avenues. Officers learned Flores was wanted on a no-bail warrant issued by Belleville Court for a burglary charge. She was also wanted by Newark Court on a $50 bail for a prior traffic offense. Officer Kelly issued Flores summonses for failure to keep right, careless driving and a violation of traffic on marked lanes. Officer Ekladious, who investigated the Passaic Avenue collision, served Flores with summons charging tailgating, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident and careless driving. Flores was arrested and turned over to the custody of the Belleville Police Department.

Bridge deck design The Orthotropic Deck is a lightweight design that has a thin steel plate and a series of ribs and floor beams, similar to U.S. Battleship decks. Prefabricating the deck results in faster construction and higher quality control. Having a lightweight deck also allows the bridge to operate more efficiently, reduces the amount of future maintenance and additionally, creates a longer span length providing a smoother driving surface. Construction of the new bridge is being accomplished in five separate contracts. The first three contracts have been completed —building the Fish House Road Pump Station, advance utilities, roadway embankments, river piers, fender system and a portion of the approach spans for the new vertical lift bridge. The fourth and fifth contracts are currently under construction and will complete the approach spans, the Fish House Road flyover ramps, new roadways and the new vertical lift bridge span and towers.

Construction of the final bridge and approach roadway segments of the new vertical lift bridge over and the improvements to the interchange at Fish House Road are slated, according to the NJDOT, to be completed a year from now. New connection ramps to Newark Avenue and St. Paul’s Avenue in Jersey City will be provided along with the demolition of the existing Wittpenn Bridge. The Vibro Concrete Columns (VCC) for the west approach, load transfer mat and lightweight fill are part of this contract. Walls 1-10 and Sign Structures 1-9 will also be completed. The
