A
sh Wednesday marked the beginning of Christians’ annual 40-day journey to Easter with Masses and Liturgies of the Word throughout the world, and locally, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, the archbishop of Newark, celebrated the Eucharist at St. Patrick’s Pro Cathedral in Newark that day at noontime, a long-standing tradition for archbishops that predates his arrival here from Indianapolis. The cardinal imposed ashes on the foreheads of hundreds of faithful, many of whom took time away from the office and busy schedules for the special
Mass. After the liturgy, Cardinal Tobin, dressed in purple vestments, the color designated for Lent (and Advent), took time to address the media assembled — and to explain why the Lenten season is an important time of year in the life of the Roman Catholic Church (and in other Christian churches, as well.) “In the spiritual world, this is a new beginning,” Cardinal Tobin said. “The church begins to walk together for 40 days where we pay special attention to the word of God. We want to be especially generous to the needs of God’s children, espe-

Deployment of Narcan saves lives of 3 men, Schillari says By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com

hanks to the quick action by Hudson County Sheriff’s Officers, three men are alive today who might otherwise not be, Hudson County Sheriff Francis X. “Frank”
Schillari said last week. “On three separate instances in February, my officers utilized their issued Narcan hits to save the lives of three men who were experiencing adverse effects of opioids,” Schillari said. “All the members of the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office are trained in the
use of Narcan and carry it with them while on duty. The opioid crisis affects everyone, even non-users, not to mention the families of those addicted to opioids and it is our responsibility to do all we can to try and rehabilitate users.” Schillari says the first incident
occurred Feb. 13, around noon, right outside the Hudson County Administration Building, at 595 Newark Ave., Jersey City. Officers working a security detail at the Central Avenue entrance received a report from a

By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com Three new auxiliary bishops for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark have been chosen by His Holiness Pope Francis, including one man who was raised in Bloomfield. The Rev. Michael A. Saporito attended St. Thomas the Apostle School, Bloomfield, as a youngster and is one of the three bishops-elect. Abbot Elias R. Lorenzo and the Rev. Msgr. Gregory J. Studerus are the other two. The appointments were posted on the Vatican website last week, followed by a communication from Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the apostolic nuncio to the United States (the pope’s representative in America), in Washington, D.C. Upon introducing the newly named bishops last week at the Archdiocesan Chancery in Newark, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, the archbishop of Newark, said: “Pope Francis has shown his special concern for the life and the mission of Archdiocese of Newark. In selecting Msgr. Studerus, Abbot Lorenzo and Father Saporito for service as bishops, the Holy Father gives new impetus to this local

He attended St. Thomas the Apostle Elementary School in Bloomfield and, in 1980, graduated from Paul VI Regional High School in Clifton. Graduating from Rutgers University Newark in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, he was employed in public accounting for three years after graduation. He entered Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall University in September 1987 and was ordained a priest May 30, 1992. In May 2004, he was appointed pastor of St. Joseph’s in Maplewood, where he served for almost seven years before being named Pastor of St. Helen’s in Westfield — one of the largest and most vibrant parishes in all of the Archdiocese of Newark — in February 2011. He continues to serve at St. Helen’s. Bishop-Elect Elias R. Lorenzo Lorenzo, 59, was born in Brooklyn, where he attended St. Agatha Parish Elementary School (Sunset Park) and Cathedral Prep (Fort Green), before pursuing a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Don Bosco College Seminary in Newton. He entered St. Mary’s Abbey, Morristown, in 1983, making his first monastic profession March 21, 1985. He was ordained a priest June 24, 1989. Lorenzo has a master’s degree in liturgical theology from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota; a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Seton Hall University in South Orange; and a licentiate in canon law from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Lorenzo has more than 30 years of experience in secondary school education and administration at the Delbarton School, serving as director of campus
ministry, teacher and chairman of the religious studies department, member of the board of trustees and vice president for development. In the monastery, Lorenzo served as director of liturgy, prior of the abbey and rector of church. He also served as chairman of the Paterson Diocesan Liturgical Commission and Vicar for Religious in the Diocese of Metuchen. He was canonical counsel for Praesidium, Inc., in the development of national standards to respond to the sex abuse cases and currently serves on its advisory board. Additionally, for the global Benedictine Confederation, Lorenzo served at Sant’Anselmo, Rome, as prior of the monastic community. He is a founding member of the International Commission for Benedictine Education. In 2016, he was elected Abbot President of American Cassinese Congregation, an association of Benedictine monasteries in the United States, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Mexico and Taiwan. Bishop-Elect Gregory J. Studerus Studerus, 71, was born and raised in West Orange and has spent nearly four decades as an archdiocesan priest serving in Hudson County. Studerus attended elementary and high school at Our Lady of the Valley in Orange before pursuing a bachelor’s degree in art education from Montclair State College. He served in the National Guard while pursuing

*** Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following: Feb. 22 At 12:39 a.m., Officers Funk, Bryan San Martin and Anthony Oliveira and Sgt. Jason Ward were dispatched to Walmart on a report of three shoplifters. Store security alleged that Stephanie J. Mobley, 31, of Newark, and East Orange residents Brittney C. Holloway, 29, and Dominique K. Booker, 30, had concealed $314.32 worth of food and clothing in shopping bags and passed all points of sale without paying. Police said all three were found to have warrants: Mobley was wanted by Newark on a charge of simple assault ($500 bail). Booker, by Essex County, failure to appear for a drug offense (no-bail warrant); by Newark, traffic offense ($350/10%), and by Union, traffic offense, ($500). Holloway was wanted by Roseland for a traffic warrant carrying $500/10% bail. After being released on her own recognizance by Roseland, Holloway was charged on a Kearny summons with shoplifting and was released from KPD custody. Booker and Mobley were charged on warrants with shoplifting and were remanded to the Hudson County Jail.

e begin this week’s Kearny police blotter with a romantic epic: On Feb. 26 at about 7 p.m., Sgt. Tom Pontrella and Officers Nick Funk, Ellesse Ogando, Giovanni Rodriguez and Kevin Matos responded to the parking lot of the T-Mobile store on Passaic Avenue on a report of a dispute. There, police said, they found Shakiya Charles, 27, of Newark, who explained that she had been standing in a parking space, making out with a man, when the driver of a Jeep beeped his horn and asked the lovers to move. Charles said she told the driver to find somewhere else to park, which reportedly agitated him. The motorist, a 45-year-old Lyndhurst man, told the officers he had beeped and asked the couple to move because there were no other available parking spaces. He claimed that Charles became irate, banged on the hood of his vehicle, yelled profanities at him and told him to find somewhere else to park. “Since no damage had been done to the Jeep,” the KPD noted, “the driver just requested a police escort into an area restaurant and had no further complaints.” Such apparently was not the case with Charles. Police said the woman began directing her loud profanities at both them and at passersby, was physically intimidating the latter, and after warnings to cease and desist went unheeded, she was arrested. While being searched by Ogando, she reportedly mulekicked the officer and then had to be carried to a police vehicle because she lay down on the ground and refused to get in. Charles was brought to Kearny PD headquarters, where, one of our sources said, he personally witnessed her “making loud fart noises with her mouth while officers processed her arrest.” She was charged with disorderly conduct, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest. The assault count was for the kick,
not the fart noises, since “there is no specific charge for flatulent mimicry.” She was then released with her summonses. As for the arrestee’s kissingpartner, he reportedly had remained at the parking lot long enough to be questioned by police and then “left without incident.” “The course of true love never did run smooth.” (That’s from Shakespeare, not the KPD.)

I wonder if my best friend, Jacob, is out there … By Lucien Sosa Washington Middle School Jacob and I met in thirdgrade. We were little kids and had the same classroom together. The teacher had us in groups of four and in September, he was in my group. I can remember it so clearly as he sat right across from me and he had a very nice smile. I never really talked to him, but he seemed nice and friendly. So sometimes, I helped him when he needed it and he did the same to me. We just started talking to each other and we became friends. Now, a lot of girls liked him, a lot, but I didn’t know why though. It’s very different between being a boy’s friend and other girls liking him. Don’t you get that feeling,
where you think to yourself, “Why do you like him, he’s just a friendly person?” ( I do) . Jacob and I would do everything together as friends. We’d go out and play in recess, draw in art class, he would choose me if we were picking teams for gym class, he would make me laugh all the time and compliment me. I would do the same. We were very good friends and we would chat about our family. We went to the same aftercare center and had a lot in common. We both liked bubble gum, we both like the Yankees for our baseball team, we both loved going to the movies, things like that. If we were given a project I would pick Jacob as my partner and he would too. He had dark brown short

hair, twinkly eyes and very light skin. An average boy, when I was with him I wondered why I never met him in the other grades. But somehow we connected and he made me feel peaceful. Our friendship was unbreakable and it was cool. Then one day at the end of June, the end of thirdgrade, he announced he was moving. My heart hurt a little bit because I knew I would never see him again and know where he was. Right now, I’m in eighth-grade and I still remember him very well. I hope I find him again and I really hope he remembers me too. I was never going to find a good friend like that, who cared and would make me
laugh and help me if I had a bad day. I’ve never seen Jacob again — and I hope he’s doing well. I knew in my heart I would never find a best guy friend like Jacob. My best friend will never be forgotten in my heart. No one can ever replace him. I really think hard about myself and wonder if he ever thinks about me. Even if he remembers me, I keep my mind set and always ALWAYS keep positive thoughts. This reminds of a time when my mom told me, “Best friends don’t always stay, they go until they fulfil their purpose.” I believe that and try to put my head up and say, “Wow these friends really came at a great time. You might have friends like that — really great ones and sometimes not so really great quality ones. There are
times where that can happen as well. Maybe Jacob really fulfilled his purpose in being my best friend. So, don’t be upset if a friend moves away or is just not friends with you. They were there for a good amount of time, just the right amount to make you feel special and joy in your heart. Trust me, you will know when the right time comes you will find a really good person. Best friends are like stars — you may not always see them but you know that they are out there. They take a big place in your heart. Jacob was a really good friend who I respected. We are fortunate to have so many great local women leaders

elcome to Women’s History Month, celebrated each and every March. We are at a point in our nation’s history where more than ever, the role of women is as important, if not even more important, than ever before. And so it stands as a reminder of just how fortunate we are, in the readership area of The Observer, to have so many women in leading roles. At present, one woman is a mayor in our readership, Dina Grilo, of East Newark. She took office in January as the first female mayor in the borough’s history — and she’s been working at a blazing pace ever since. She works with Councilwomen Rose Evaristo, Jeanne Zincavage and Jessica Diaz. There, half of the council are women. In Kearny, half of the Town Council is female as well, with Marytrine DeCastro in the First Ward, Carol Jean Doyle and Eileen Eckel in the Third Ward and Susan McCurrie in the Fourth Ward. Each has demonstrated incredible leadership over their tenures. And, Doyle has spent the last few years as the President of the Council. Harrison is fortunate to have on its council Ellen Mendoza and Eleanor Villalta in the Second Ward and Maria Camano in the First Ward. Each brings a great energy to the Town of Harrison — and all have played an integral role in the overwhelming changes the town continues to see on a daily basis. In North Arlington, Allison Sheedy has served many years on the Borough Council — and she was most recently joined by two other women, Donna Bocchino and Lynette Cavadas. All three lead with distinction. Karen Haggerty, meanwhile, serves as commissioner in Lyndhurst, keeping up a fine tradition of Haggertys who have served the Township so well and so often. Belleville’s Naomy DePeña and Marie Strumolo Burke serve on the Belleville Township Council and both have led with distinction. Burke is a veteran and DePeña is a relative newcomer who has brought new, innovative thoughts and work to the council. So as we enter Women’s History Month, we say thank you to all who have done so much in the past — and all who do so much now for our communities. To say we are fortunate is an understatement.
Zautyk: Bravo on bag ban, Kearny
J
ust because someone writes for a certain newspaper doesn’t mean they necessarily agree with the editorial opinions of said paper. Case in point: Last week’s Observer editorial, “Kearny Council blunders by banning plastic bags.” My personal reaction to the Council’s decision was, “Way to go, politicos! What took you so long?” Actually, I won’t be fully content until such a ban is enacted and enforced statewide in New Jersey. Coincidentally, right after The Observer came out, so did a news report reminding folks that such a statewide ban will take effect in New York next week. The prohibition here in Kearny (but not until April 2021), soon to be in New York and already statewide in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Oregon and Vermont, applies to those flimsy, non-recyclable, chintzy, single-use plastic bags that infest supermarkets and other stores. You know, the bags you see blowing across highways and meadows, float-

According to one report on the New York law, New Yorkers have been using (i.e.. wasting, polluting with) 23 billion of these bags per year. (I don’t know the Jersey figure, but I wonder if Walmart shoplifters alone don’t account for a billion or so. Of course, many Walmart shoplifters use their purses or pockets, so perhaps I’m being a bit unfair.) In any case, under the Kearny law, to better accommodate certain types of businesses there will be numerous exceptions. (See last week’s p. 1 story for the list.) But shoppers should have the ability to purchase, at a minimal price, recyclable, reusable plastic bags. Where I shop, on the other side of the Passaic, some stores have been selling these — or giving them out for free! — for some time. You can also buy large, sturdy, double-handle reusables for a few bucks — sometimes as little as 99¢. I have been
using bags like this for years now, and they can last for years. They’re available in supermarkets, dollar stores, some drugstores, etc. I also take exception to The Observer’s complaint that “it is wholly unfair to expect people who don’t drive . . . to haul a load of bags home that do not have handles.” The old, brown-paper grocery bags had no handles, but brown-paper bags I’ve seen in stores these days are so equipped. As for shoppers abandoning Kearny businesses to avoid the hardship of a recyclable-bag fee, how are they going to get to the out-of-town stores? Drive (and use up gasoline)? Take a bus, a cab, Uber? Wild weekend of wrestling for locals
Lyndhurst’s Dylan Weaver; Kearny native Mullen win Region gold Jimmy Mullen only heard stories about what it was like to wrestle at an NJSIAA Region championship. After all, the Kearny native is still only a freshman at St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, so Mullen had never competed in a region tournament before this weekend’s Region 1 tournament at West Milford. “Everything up there is amazing,” Mullen said of his sojourn to the mountainous region of northern New Jersey. “I felt a little nervous, like I did during the districts, but this time, for some reason, I felt more comfortable. At the districts, I knew that if I lost the first round, I was lost and done. After that first match, every nerve that I had in my body went away.” Mullen proved that by winning the Region 1 championship at 285 pounds (heavyweight), even though Mullen, through weight training and diet, is now down to 230 pounds these days. After a brilliant football season, playing defensive end for the Green Knights, also as a freshman, Mullen has continued his prowess through the wrestling season, proven by his immense success at the Region 1. “I’m doing all the same things I always did all sea-
son long,” Mullen said. “I’m sticking with whatever works. It’s been working all season, so I can’t switch up now.” Mullen gained a 4-0 decision over Jakob Shapiro of Fair Lawn in the championship round. He said that the weight differential, surrendering as much as 55 pounds to most opponents is “noticeable.” “Not having the size is difficult, but I make up for it with speed and technique,” Mullen said. “I’m used to being undersized. And age doesn’t matter either.” Mullen said that he received a special message from his long-time friend, namely two-time NJSIAA state champion Jacob Cardenas, now wrestling at Cornell. “He texted me and said, ‘Congrats, kid, keep it up,’” Mullen said. “That kid meant everything to me. We’re really close. He said, ‘Now it’s on to AC.’” Mullen is just one of nine local wrestlers who punched their ticket to the NJSIAA state championships next weekend at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. “It feels good, going to Atlantic City as a freshman,” Mullen said. “I’m happy to be one of the local See VIEW, Page 11

PATERSON – It all began so innocently, when Lyndhurst High School senior Michael Failace was nominated by the Golden Bears’ coaching staff for the “Heart of a Giant” program, sponsored by the New York Giants, honoring local high school football players for their courageous and spirited activity off the field. Failace was selected because he was instrumental in his mother’s heroic and amazing battle with colon cancer. Dawn Failace was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer and given about a one-percent chance of survival. But she underwent a radical surgery to attack the cancer cells. Michael Failace helped with his mother’s care while juggling his responsibilities as the
reliable placekicker for the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group II state champions in the fall, Lyndhurst’s first state championship in 36 years. The remarkable story of the Failaces was written here in The Observer in the October 16, 2019 editions of The Observer. Although Failace did not receive enough votes to receive the Giants’ award, just the nomination was newsworthy enough and his plight caught the eye of United States Congressman Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-Paterson), an avid sports fan who constantly catches up on the local sports scene by reading the local newspapers. “I read that article very carefully,” Pascrell said. “I was very impressed with the family. It seemed like more than an article. It was a story of inner strength. Michael did what he did with love for his mother.”
Pascrell wrote a letter to the editor of The Observer, praising the dedication of Failace, After reading Pascrell’s letter in the pages of The Observer, it was suggested that someone should call Pascrell’s office to see if a meeting between the two heroes could actually take place. That indeed is what happened recently, as Failace and his mother Dawn paid a visit to the Congressman’s office. There was a leisurely 90-minute chat, as Failace got to learn a little more about Pascrell and his background in athletics, as a high school student at a now-defunct high school in Paterson called St. John’s and commuting daily by bus and trains to Fordham University in the Bronx. It was just business as usual for me. I just go out there and wrestle, I don’t let the coaches tell me about my opponent. I think they know not to tell me, because I want to wrestle my own match every time. If I go out there and think too much, I could be in trouble. The eye condition known as a “macular hole” is similar to “agerelated macular degeneration” (AMD) in that it shares symptoms with AMD, affects the macula (a small area at the center of the retina), and is typically age-related. However, the two conditions are not related. Over time, it is normal for the gel-like “vitreous” that fills the space behind the lens to shrink. As this happens, it may pull away from the retina and macula, creating a hole. The risk of developing a second macular hole is about ten percent. Diagnosis can be made on the basis of an imaging test called “optical coherence tomography” (OCT), which scans the retina for damage. Treatment depends on the size of the hole. Macular holes often begin gradually. In the early stage of a

I couldn’t watch the states last year. I had to get out of there. I went to the St. Patrick’s Day party with the Elks for the first time. I couldn’t deal with everything down there. I talked to the kids about getting through Wednesday (the

Park Ridge helped with the situation, as the Owls and the Bears watched Leone fire his first shot. He missed. His teammate ran down the rebound. The clock kept ticking. Leone got another shot. He missed that one. Another rebound from Sebastian Ribaniera, who snared four rebounds in like 40 seconds. Another miss. Tick, tick…Leone got another shot and misfired on that one as well. Park Ridge snared the rebound this time and fired it back to Leone. “I just had to get to a certain spot,” Leone said.
“When he dribbled the ball to the top of the key, there was no doubt it was going up again,” McGuire said. “He was lining that one up.” Finally, with four seconds remaining, Leone got one last chance from behind the top of the key. “I knew it was going in,” Leone said. “I saw it on line toward the basket. The kid who hit the big shot took two steps running back to play defense – like a good basketball player does – then stopped, realizing that the game was over, Lyndhurst won 66-37 and A.J. Leone was in the box score forever. “My friends were all jumping up and down with me,” Leone said. “It was insane. When something insane happens, you can’t explain it.” Nope, ranks right there with inexplicable. So for his efforts and for obvious sentimental reasons, Leone has been selected as The Observer Athlete of the Week for
the past week. The legend will always question whether Leone’s shot was a twopointer or a three. Leone insists that he lived up to his teammate Carson Rodriguez’s demands and was behind the circle. “Yes, sir,” Leone said about the question of it being a 3-pointer. Officially, it was only a two-pointer. Still, it’s a moment that will last a lifetime. “It was very heartwarming,” said team captain Sanchez. “It really meant a lot. To see how excited he was. A lot of times, we take so many things for granted. You don’t realize how much something means to people. It was fun to give him a try. It’s something I’ll remember for the rest of my life. We were able to do a good thing for someone who always does good things for us.” The heartwarming story went viral on YouTube on Thursday. “This took on like crazy throughout the school,” McGuire said.
“You could see how much he’s loved by everyone. It was a really good moment. You see these kind of things happen on television. I never really thought we would be part of it.” The story also just exploded like wildfire, spreading to the media. CBS-TV Channel 2 and ABC-TV Channel 7 Eyewitness News sent full mobile trucks and field reporters to talk to Leone and his teammates. A handful of local newspapers also called upon Leone. He became an instant celebrity. “It’s been the most fun I had in my life,” Leone said. “It was the greatest achievement in my life.” Leone doesn’t know what the future holds. As a special needs student, his options are a little limited. “I would hopefully like to work in a sneaker store,” Leone said. “Sneakers are like my favorite thing.” Besides doing interviews for a local Athlete of the Week feature. Williams, of Harrison, says he took his lunch hour — he works on Broad Street in Newark — to attend the Mass because he feels a special bond with Cardinal Tobin. “There’s something about the guy that exudes holiness,” Williams said. “And yet, he’s a very simple guy, too. He’s approachable. He listens. His words actually mean something. He lives as he preaches. And as Lent begins, I couldn’t have thought of a better way to begin.” Marie Pierre, a resident of Belleville, says she is a Catholic who will always seek ashes to offer an outward sign of her faith. She decided to come to the cardinal’s Mass since she lives not too far away. “It may seem somewhat morbid, but it’s true,” Pierre said. “We come from dust — and we become dust, after death … at least our physical bodies do. We don’t get a long time on this earth but it’s more about what we do with our time here. I always do my best to ‘Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel’ as the priest can sometimes say at the imposition of ashes. I try my best to live that way — doesn’t always happen — but I do try.”

Continued from Page 1 passerby that a man was passed out on the sidewalk. Officers made contact with the unresponsive man and realized he was possibly overdosing. Officers administered Narcan and the man slowly gained consciousness as EMS arrived on at the scene. The second incident, the sheriff says, happened five days later — Feb. 18, at approximately 6:30 a.m., when officers were dispatched to a Dunkin Donuts at 507 Summit Ave., Jersey City, on a report of an unresponsive man in the bathroom. When officers arrived, they found a man sitting on the toilet, slumped over, with a hypodermic needle on the floor beside him. A first dose of Narcan was administered; however, it seemed to be ineffective. A second dose was administered and the man was still incoherent, but
EMS transported him to the Jersey City Medical Center for additional treatment where he reportedly survived. The final incident occurred Monday, Feb. 24, at around 5 p.m. Officers were assisting with traffic outside the Riotto Funeral Home, Jersey City, when they were approached by a woman who told them her boyfriend was unresponsive in their apartment on Kennedy Boulevard. Officers entered the apartment and found the man on the kitchen floor, unresponsive and cyanotic. Officers were told the man was a heroin user — and they noticed track marks on his arm. Officers then administered two doses of Narcan and the man started to wake up. He was then transported to the Jersey City Medical Center for additional treatment. “All three men survived, and this shows the importance of the use of Narcan in modern policing,” Schillari said. “My officers will continue to remain vigilant in keeping residents of Hudson County safe.”
